Build Your Own Team: Part III

By: Inara | August 20th, 2008

A new coach, several new players, new tactical systems…so I figured it was time for another team building exercise.

I can’t resist this picture. It’s Lyon to a T.

Between friendlies and the first few competitive games, we’ve gotten a vague idea about the kind of team Puel wants to form – tactically organized, defensively solid, players sticking to their roles (as opposed to last season, where players would be out of position all the time). However, that comes at a price – offensively, Lyon haven’t found what clicks for them yet.

One of the problems Puel faces is accommodating so many players. Lyon’s midfield depth is outrageous, and an added bonus is that several of them are versatile and can play in several different positions.

GK: Lloris, Vercoutre, Hartock
CB: Cris, Mensah, Boumsong, Bodmer, (Faure)
RB: Reveillere, Clerc, (Gassama, Beynie)
LB: Grosso, Reveillere, Kallstrom, (Gassama, Valdivia)
DM: Toulalan, Makoun, Santos, Kallstrom, Bodmer, (Mehamha, Beynie, Valdivia)
AM: Juninho, Ederson, Bodmer, Kallstrom, Pjanic, (Grenier)
RW: Govou, Keita, Ederson, Pjanic, Clerc
LW: Delgado, Mounier, Pjanic, Ederson, Benzema, Kallstrom, (Grenier)
ST: Benzema, Fred, Piquionne, Baros (Tafer, Grenier)

Italics indicate a player who can fill in if necessary, but it’s not his natural or preferred position. Parentheses () indicate a youth player who has impressed Puel but would only be called up to the bench if things are dire.

With this in mind, what starting lineup would you like to see Puel use this season? Since it’s obvious that Puel hasn’t decided on a system or a specific set of players, almost everything is fair game.

Here is what I think would be most effective: 4-2-3-1

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Mensah – Grosso
Toulalan – Makoun
Govou – Pjanic – Ederson
Benzema

I really like the Toulalan-Makoun pair, and I think with more games under his belt, Pjanic will also be a valuable member of the squad. I debated on Govou, but until Delgado or Keita can do better, he’s our best option. Putting Ederson on the left is probably a little bit weird, but he played there at Nice. He could also interchange with Pjanic if necessary.

I didn’t use Juninho (or Bodmer or Kallstrom). I suppose for the moment, Juninho would be in Pjanic’s place, but in the longterm, I don’t see Juninho maintaining a starting spot.

Some other possibilities:

4-3-3:

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Mensah – Grosso
Makoun – Toulalan – Juninho
Keita – Benzema – Govou

4-4-2:

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Mensah – Grosso
Govou – Makoun – Toulalan – Ederson
Benzema – Fred

4-3-1-2:

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Mensah – Grosso
Juninho – Toulalan – Kallstrom
Pjanic
Benzema – Fred

What about you guys? What would you like to see?

To me, that’s the first year I cannot be sure about the starting line up I’d like to see.
But here’s what I’d like to see.

The same defensive line for every game. I just change our offensive lines.

    Lloris
    Reveillere – Cris – Mensah – Grosso

“Easy” Ligue 1, Coupe de la ligue and Coupe de France games :

    ——–Toulalan———–
    Delgado – Ederson – Mounier
    —– Fred – Piquionne —–

    Hard Ligue 1 games :

    —— Toulalan ——–
    — Makoun – Juninho —
    Govou ———- Pjanic
    ——- Benzema ——–

    CL games :

    – Toulalan – Makoun —
    ——- Juninho ——–
    Govou ———- Pjanic
    ——- Benzema ——-

    Benzema

it might have something to do with the fact Juninho is my all time favorite player, but i really cant see the starting line up without him, his set pieces is just an amazing bonus, and even today he is in my opinion one of the best playmakers out there.
quite sad i there’s no room left for Kallstrom, could go on rotation i guess with either Makoun/Bodmer/Juninho/left wing i guess :/

    - Lloris
    - Clerc – Cris – Mensah – Grosso
    Juninho – Toulalan – Makoun – Kallstrom
    - Pjanic
    - Benzema

Solid in the middle and offensive on the wings. Kallstrom can cover for Grosso’s forward runs, Toulalan can help cover for Clerc.

GK – Lloris (pickup of the summer for OL – I love his game!)
RB – A rotation of Clerc & Reveilliere, in that order. would like to get another RB at one point, but that’s another story)
CD – If Cris & Mensah can play every match for the next 3 years, that would be great. ‘Nuff said.
LB – Grosso, Reveillere – I’d like Grosso to play 80-90% of the matches this year.
I feel this defence has a chance to be special. A terrific mix of experience, skill and power. This is the area I will be expecting Puel to make the biggest difference in this season.
DM – La Toule and Makaoun can both start. That’s a very nice core of 6 defensive-minded players covering our end (yes, that means you too, Grosso!)
CAM – Juninho (I expect at least another year of high-quality play from everyone’s favorite brazilian) plays about 75% of the matches to keep him fresh. Ederson gets the nod in the other matches and subs for him.
LAM – Well this is a no-brainer…Hatem Be…oops! hmm…never mind that last thought…I will put Pjanic and Delgado splitting time.
RAM – Sorry, Sidney, time for Kader Keita to get some decent playing time and show what he can do! Of course, Govou can always play as a sub and relief.
ST – After today’s game, I’m picking Milan Baros to start at striker for…anybody but LYON! Obviously, Karim can play here for the next 10 years and win us 4 Champions League medals along the way as well as a 17th consecutive championship. My first choice backup is Fred (yeah, I know).
    So there you go: 4-2-3-1

    Allez Lyon!

Ghislain:Very good line up, almost exactly what I would choose. However I seem to be the only one who thinks that Lyon need only 1 out and out DM in Toulalan, so something like this:

    Clerc–Cris–Mensah–Grosso
    ——–Toulalan———–
    —-Juni/Ederson———–
    Keita/Govou-Pranjic-Delgado
    ——–Benzema————

Well, my first thought is a slightly unconventional 4-3-3, with two attack-minded players in midfield:

    —————Lloris————–
    Reveillere – Mensah – Cris – Grosso
    ————–Toulalan————-
    ———–Juninho—————–
    ———————Pjanic——–
    -Keita——–Benzema——Delgado-

And then if every player in that lineup gets injured you can back it up like so:

    ————Vercoutre————–
    Gassama–Boumsong–Faure–Kallstrom
    ————-Makoun—————-
    ———–Santos——————-
    —————-Bodmer————-
    -Govou——–Fred———Ederson-

Faure looks a bit weak there, but Bodmer could play there too if I didn’t have him playing in the hole; you’d hope that not quite all that many players would be injured.

But on further reflection, my favourite is a 3-5-2, which lets me play all my favourites at once:

    —————Lloris————–
    —–Mensah—Cris—Boumsong——
    ————–Toulalan————-
    -Keita——-Juninho——Delgado–
    —————Pjanic————–
    ———-Benzema—-Fred———-

But regrettably, there’s no depth behind the centre back line.

It obviously needs more experimentation; the options seem endless. =) I’d love to keep seeing Juninho for a while yet, though.

I have always loved Kallstrom on the left. I think he is better there than in the center.
    I’d go for :
    Lloris
    Reveillere – Cris – Boumsong – Grosso
    Toulalan/Makoun
    Govou – Ederson/Pjanic – Kallstrom
    Benzema – Fred

I would prefer a partnership Cris Boumsong. I think Cris and Mensah are too similar defensilvely and don’t complement each other. Boumsong is not as physical as the two others but is very good in game reading… He would give also a better cover for Grosso.

I also have 2 strikers, because the main atmosphere problem for our team is up front… only 1 seat for 4 players, that just cannot work! If we have 4 strikers, we have to play at least 2 per game. And I don’t think we need to have 2 DM’s for Ligue 1 games… CL maybe, but not L1.

    Hi, Inara.
Laurie told me about your blog, and I just looked through some of the entries, and wow, this is a really great blog! I can’t believe I didn’t know about it earlier. Good job so far!
This is my first season following soccer, so I still have so much to learn about individual players it seems (I have to learn “wingers” and all the different positions too, hah). Anyways, it’s very interesting to read about you guys’ ideal lineups.

Here’s the thing with me about the Champions League. Yes, I would LOVE to win the damn thing, or hell even make it to the semis. But only ONE team in all of Europe wins it every year and it is very difficult for a French team (yes, even Lyon) to compete with the likes of Madrid, ManU, Barcelona, Milan, etc. These are historical clubs with deep links to soccer’s past and have much more money to throw around. Wow, imagine if Lyon were able to attract a Carlos Tevez for $60 million? Not gonna happen…when the Eto’o rumours came out and JMA said he didn’t really want to disturb the salary structure. I never once, Samuel confirmed this, believe a striker of his caliber would ever join Lyon – for now, it is still a one way street the other way. So while winning it would be a similar feeling for me as when France won in ‘98, it is not the be all end all of my goals for Lyon as a club. When OL starts to buy these kinds of players or have them stay at Lyon for the bulk of their careers, then I will be happy that Lyon have truly arrived as a BIG club. Everyone that blogs here knows that Karim is as good as gone next summer. We need to be able to convince Karim to stay, period.I am sick of being a feeder club to the clubs we are expecting to beat in the Champions League – it’s ridiculous! Even Arsenal has never won the Champions League for crying out loud. Anyway, end of mini-rant. I just love this club and want to see it progressing and not stagnating or regressing.

Welcome, Caleb and Clara! Always good to see more OL fans.

I’m with Jo, there are so many options that it’s hard to figure out which one would be the most effective. I hope Puel doesn’t play favorites though, like using Bodmer in defense instead of a real defender (Boumsong). I also hope Kallstrom isn’t completely forgotten. He was immense in the Sweden-France game, and it was a nice reminder of what he can do when he’s on song.

Wage structure aside, Lyon are great but still located in France and have to play in Ligue 1 which isn’t an attractive prospect for most players as the league lacks competition.

About the CL, as Ghislain and Wenger have pointed out its a cup competition so only 1 team wins it each year, and one bad day at the office and you’re out. Madrid beat by Roma at the Bernabeu last season? You need a certain amount of luck which Lyon just hasn’t had so far.

I think lyon can make it really far in CL this season, we’ve done some exellent signings in ederson, lloris, pjanic, makoun and mensah, and i think all of those players will be hunter by all the richest clubs at the end of the seasong. MY optimal starting eleven would be:
    Lloris
    Clerc/Revelliere Cris Mensah
    Grosso/Kolodziecziak

    Makoun Toulalan

Govou/keita Pjanic/Juninho(he’s assists will be desicive for lyon this year) Ederson/delgado

    Benzema

With fred as an second option striker, and baros as an free transfer.

This team will bring the trophe back home to france and make the football in france as popular as premier league!!
