CdF: Marseille vs. Lyon

Round of 16 French Cup
Le Stade Gerland
(20:45CET, 19:45GMT)
Today, Marseille come to Le Stade Gerland to take on Lyon in the Round of 16 of Le Coupe de France, with neither team looking for anything less than a victory. Both teams will be fielding their best available squads. Let’s hope this match will be the complete opposite of what we saw in the last meeting between these two sides in regular league play on December 14th, a (0-0) draw which would’ve put an insomniac to sleep. In fact, the only thing I enjoyed about that match was the Lyon boys giving HBA a good welcome-home thrashing, physically knocking any potential effectiveness right out of him, probably causing Gerets to pull him in the second half. Let’s hope Lyon can continue their current three-game scoring streak that began with Lorient and continued this weekend(six goals vs. division five team Concarneau)- hey, I’ll take it!- in which we’ve seen scoring by players with names other than Karim; an occurence of monumental importance in my opinion.
History: In Overall cup play, Marseille have won the cup (10) times while Lyon have hoisted the trophy (4) times. In the meetings between the two teams in cup play, Marseille have won the last (5) meetings between the two teams, with the last two matches being very closely constensted with a (1-2) loss at Gerland in ‘06 and again a (2-1) loss at the Velodrome in ‘07.
Le groupe Lyonnais:
Lloris, Vercoutre – Grosso, Boumsong, Cris, Faure – Toulalan, Makoun, Källström, Fabio Santos – Pjanic, Juninho, Delgado, Keita, Mounier – Tafer, Piquionne, Benzema.
Injuries: The usuals: Clerc, Reveillere, Mensah, Bodmer, and Gouvou are out. Ederson can be added to the list now, at least for this match, as he has reaggrevated that ankle injury he sustained in the CL I believe it was, and I think he’s still getting over that flu he’s been suffering from for the past week or so.
Lineup: The best are out on the pitch. I’ll go with this.
Lloris
F.Santos-Cris-Boumsong-Grosso
Juninho-Toulalan
Keita-Delgado-Kallstrom
Benzema
I think that Gassama has been sent to the CFAs- no word on any injury- and Fabio Santos gets to start at RB. I think Makoun might be seeing more bench time, as Puel has seen that Kallstrom’s creativity has given the squad some needed offensive push. I still don’t like Delgado at the 10, he needs to be on the wings were he shinned against Grenoble(didn’t see Concarneau). So we’ll see if Puel’s starting 11 looks anything like this.

on forum moderation: why did it block me from describing croatian fans’ fascist gestures, when the last two threads have had completely ridiculous language? @ ronan and govou, your passion is commendable but could you try to come up with more varied vocabulary? i know english is your second language (or i just put my foot in my mouth bigtime), but even writing something in french would be better than swearing in capslock.
panucci would be nice; too bad he’s cup tied but at least that would take pressure off in the league and we could (gasp!) rest some defenders for barça?

Look Will. We, in Croatia ar not Nazi or Fascist. We just remeber Italinas what they do to us in history, especialy in World War II. You are from USA, and Amaricans didn’t feel power of germany’s Wermanch. Well we feel that. They tourch us four years, and serbians tourch us 46 years. Soo you can’t say about Croatians that they, or I am Fascist. Italinas always wanted Adriatic sea, even in 21. sentury they want our coast. Soo I can talk about Italinas like I want. I’m sorry for my langauage, sorry because I swear. From now on I will keep my personal opinion about Italian for my self. I hope that all of you will accept my apologie.

And I mean to say Wermacht not Wermanch.

Sidney Govou: I’ve warned you before, those kind of insults are NOT permitted on the Offside. You could have made your point without the profanity and racial slurs.
Will: Don’t worry, I’m banning him, at least for a while.

Ok you didn’t accept apologie. It’s ok. Now I see who you are and what you are. Thank you very much.

Isn’t Panucci like 35yrs old? How much does he have left in the tank?

SG: Pannuci and Luyindula? Both cuptied players that would be used in league play to rest the “starters.” As if it really matters if Keita is rested or not. When he isn’t busy breaking opposing players’ faces, he’s pretty much a non-entity. I think PSG said that Luyindula isn’t going anywhere.

I read that Panucci can play anywhere along the backline. Does anyone know if this is true? Is he prone to inury? If not, he would be a huge plus for league play: backing-up Grosso and the CBs as well as starting at RB. Anway, this probably won’t happen either.

Panucci can play anywhere in defence RB,CB,LB however Aulas and now Puel the bastards they are feel they dont need to recruit, listen to the interview with Puel its pathetic. I admire him for keeping a straight face when he talks avout our “strong” squad-its complete bollocks !Lyon really should sign Panucci hes experienced,a leader, versatile and a fairly big name signing. I dont know why its such a problem that he is cuptied,at the end of the day we would only have two CL games needed for someone to play, afterall Barca will knock us out,and no he literally hardly ever gets injured,in fact i think he has been fit for each game this season. Lyon are really pissing me off !

Personally I find it slightly worrying how Aulas and Puel, two footballing experts, can reallistically think are sqad is strong, considering every body else can see our problem areas and identify poosible players to compensate. And yet those two wankers cannot,I mean how does that work ? Also there may be departures-GREAT,that will help the cause !I mean those two are living in another world,Id say dont be surprised to see Barca field a second string team against us,they will treat us as if they were playing a copa del rey game against a segunda2/3 team and still expect to go through comfortably. Boumsong,Mensah,Govou,Keita,Mounier,Piquionne and Fred dont even desreve to wear a lyon shirt. This situation is complete madness, its a shambels Aulas should be ashamed !

Ok, I got to watch the rest of the Marseille-Lyon game and i have to say that it was really and excellent game. Good, tight passing from Lyon, Keita and Delgado were explosive and Benzema was back to his dangerous self. I’m feeling much better about this team now, and have to say that selling Ben Arfa was a really good idea. He was useless against us and Delgado, his replacement, made him look like a chump. Also, all the Boumsong bashers should compare his play this season with Squillaci. I’ll bet Boumsong would come out on top. The reason the defense was so poor for so long was because Cris was out and Mensah was played out of position or injured. Needing Kallstrom to play on the backline didnt help. If Lyon can sign Panucci then it would be a big boost at RB, at least for the league play.

@ govou: what the, i didn’t even get a chance to accept any apology (and what a fine quarter-hearted effort it was), but if you want to hold my commuting distance against me that’s fine. let the record show that FIFA fined the Croatian FA for their fans’ behaviour, racist/fascist or otherwise, at Euro 2008. I have never made any sort of values judgment about that, just mentioned it. having never been the victim of any sort of war myself, i cannot imagine the horror and resentment it might stir. but let us drop the philosophical discussion now, as this is not the place. consider your apology accepted with the same degree of sincerity with which it was delivered.
one more thing (sanctimony alert) – just because we Canadians (and my American neighbours) didn’t have our cities destroyed doesn’t mean that we didn’t make huge sacrifices to help right the wrongs. i would avoid citing WWII as an excuse to spit racial epithets at anybody (wasn’t racism one of the main problems?!), since i suspect both of us are far too young to fully understand what it was like (let alone remember).
now. i forget, were we talking about football or something? isn’t sunday the lyon derby? that’s something to get excited about, innit?

They haven’t signed him yet, and I’m almost sure that they will not do it. It doesn’t make sence!!!!

@Pjanić: there you go…
It looks like we really haven’t signed anyone at all. I’ve tried really hard, but I simply can’t find a more understaffed team than Lyon at the moment. For a team to be so hard-hit with injuries to some particular positons and still don’t reinforce themselves in the transfer window is beyond comprehension. Ambition to spend? A desire to win the CL? I guess I’ll still be a Lyon supporeter after this, but I’m very dissapointed. Why on earth didn’t we sign a left-back, even with a 100% healthy squad he have only one. In the case that something happens to Grosso, I have a personal message to send – Kolo, good luck against Messi!

I’m glad we didn’t sign anyone just because we need backup. The club is about going forward, and you can’t impend yourself with signings that just don’t cut it. Faubert isn’t the kind of player we needed, sure he can play up the flank, but Santos is probably better than him at RB defensively. As for Panucci, he has another year or two in him, and he would really help out as a whole. The french league, to me, is more important than champions league this year. There’s a whole mess of problems that will pop up if we don’t win it. And the title race is as close as it has been in a long time.

Ah, Marseille! Will Lyon be singing La Marseillaise at the end of this match-up? Please don’t forget Sx3 today. And please vote for Mr. Fairway…he gets a chance to win a free trip!
