CdL- QUARTER FINALS: LORIENT vs. LYON

Quarter-final – Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Stade du Moustoir, Lorient
11:00 EST(17:00CET, 16:00GMT)

Well, Sunday saw OL stumble out of the CdF. While I’m not really upset- the referee did gift Monaco’s Nene that intial penalty that led to the first goal- I am a bit disillusioned for other reasons. Not only was it Lyon’s first loss of the New Year, but we eventually saw our chances for acquiring silverware this season, essentially cut in half in the span of ninety minutes. More troubling than being thumped-out of the CdF race however, was the manner in which it happened: Although we really only conceaded one goal, the worst part of our performance was actually that of our offense, once again, showing those woeful signs of impotence that have characterized much its performance this season, and in the end a defender, and someone who’s given up so many of the twenty plus goals we’ve couged-up this season, Boumsong scores the only goal.

So it is that Wednesday, OL head back to Brittany to take-on a Lorient side- this time to dispute the CdL- that we dispatched 3-1 just last week in league play, in what was a beautiful second half display of football on the part of our offense. Anyway, sorry for the short post guys, but I already wrote about Lorient in a post last week, so you can go check-out the history of meetings between the two teams or Les Merlus’ current form- minus their latest loss to Lyon- here.

This is Puel’s last shot at any hardware this season, so I imagine he’ll be fielding the best unit he can.

Out: Cris (suspended), Anderson, Bodmer, Clerc, Makoun.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – A. Cissokho, Boumsong, Lovren, Réveillère, Gassama – Källström, Toulalan, Gonalons, Grenier, Ederson, Pjanic; Bastos, Delgado, Govou, B. Gomis, Tafer, Lisandro.

    @Megame
    Dies with honors in Madrid and finishes third of Le Championnat-this is the reason why I am frustrated, three years ago we looked to finish first and maybe win the CL. We are getting worser every year and why is it so hard to get rid of Puel. He is the worst coach we ever had.

    maybe the problem is not getting rid of puel, but it is finding a better replacement at this time in the middle of the season.
    but i would really want puel gone too :(

    Yea, finding some1 better will be hard, or maybe not finding someone better, but finding someone capable of the job. This man that i was so positive of once he joined is ruining the club, and we need him gone

    With rumours linking Manchester United to Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Hugo Lloris increasing in volume by the day, reports now suggest that the Red Devils could use midfielder Anderson as a makeweight in any deal. The latest reports from The Daily Mail even suggest a loan deal for the Brazilian midfielder is “imminent”.

    No way JMA will sell Lloris.It is to early and he is already now one of the best GKs in the world. In 4-5 years maybe but not now. Especially not for a shit player like Anderson. We already have Ederson no need for another brazilian unmotivated “star”.

    Lloris won’t go until the summer… Wish we could keep him forever though. Wouldn’t mind Anderson, as Ederson is possibly departing now. I’m just sad about this club at the moment… How are we supposed to ever be a big club again if we are going to sell all of our players… I think what the players of Lyon miss is the passion of for example Bordeaux. These guys love playing together, they give it all for each other, and they are a team.

    @Alex
    A good coach would know how to create a good atmosphere in the team.We need a new coach. Why should it be so hard to find a better coach than Puel? Is it so hard to be better than this man? I dont think that it would be a problem to find a more qualified coach. At least it cant be worser than this.
    Maybe Domenech cames back to OL…

    If there is one coach I don’t want, it is Domenech. I would even prefer Puel to that man. Maybe we should appoint Juninho as our new coach:)

    Some french websites are talking about Ederson leaving us for Lazio… I don’t see this as a really bad news, if it’s a loan, it could be good for him. I hope he’ll be back next summer when Puel will be far from Lyon.

    puel, domenech…

    a good coach does indeed know how to create a good atmosphere in the team. but who says the atmosphere at OL is bad? anyone here been at a practice, or in the changing room with the players?

    my kids go to school at gerland, my wife sees the players arriving every day, i go watch about a practice a month. that doesn’t really mean squat but it’s more than most and I sure don’t see anything showing there’s a sour atmosphere on the team.

    the same about the EdF. everyone loves to thinks domenech has all the players against him but i’m convinced (along with people like aulas, martel, triaud who know a helluva lot more than pires or duga) that when the players say they like domenech and are behind him it’s the truth. that’s bad news for people like pierre menes who make a living badmouthing people who play, coach or referee football instead of just watching it on TV eating snacks (anyone hear have an idea what menes’ monster munch budget must be like? yikes!)… what would he find to talk about?

    anyway, here’s maybe what TW14 was talking about, and i posted more about it in the monaco thread.

    Bord play draw against Boulogne, 0-0!!!!!!! Motpellier is only 6 points behind Bordeaux!!!! If we beat PSG, and we will beat them, we are 9 points behind!!!! And when you look that we was 13 points behind, 9 points don’t look bad!!!!!!

    Domenech?? How would that be any different from Puel? Both are defensive-minded and unimaginative. Please don’t even tell me that Aulas is considering it.

    neither so much as houllier… or for that matter just about any coach who has won big trphies like Cl’s and WC’s. for better or worse, the big-time game starts at the back.

    guignol – “just about any coach who has won big trphies like Cl’s and WC’s. for better or worse, the big-time game starts at the back.”
    Well… If that’s the cist for winning a “big” trophy (CL), then I think I’d rather never win it!
    As for the team atmosphere, I do also believe the atmosphere isn’t that bad. And you are right again in saying that you see more than any of us on this blog!

    It’s just that the players give up very easily recently. At a time, when we were 1 or 2 goals down, we would come back and win the game 50% of the time… What happened to that? Why did the players lose their will to fight?

    My problem here is tha I don’t see Puel making any improvement, and Aulas keeos backing him up? I don’t think he is afraid of the cost getting rid of him (he spent more than 80 millions in 6 months!).
    The after Juninho should have been easier than it has been… I hope the game against Real revives this team spirit. We need those games to see the players motivated.
