Coupe de la Ligue, Lorient vs Lyon : last hurdle before the Stade de France
By: Megame | January 31st, 20122012, after 2001?
Today is a crucial day as we’ll know whether we continue our currently successful run in 4 competitions. Since the last victory against Dijon, OL players and staff didn’t focus on the all important incoming clash at the Velodrome against Marseille, which could condition the path of the two clubs in L1. The L1 podium is a priority for Lyon and Marseille but Lyon will focus on this starting tomorrow.
Why? Because tonight is the semi-final, and the club can not afford to snub a competition that is now the easiest way to increase a trophy collection that has been stagnating for too long. And also, to Lyon, the League Cup is special since Jacques Santini led his group to the victory in 2001.

The thirst for titles
Like several others (Licha, Bafé, etc..) Michel Bastos also dreams of finally winning a title in the club he’s been playing for since 2006 after coming from LOSC. “Since I came to France, I have not won anything yet and it is true that in the locker room, we all want to give a new title to the club. The desire to win something one can see on the field, I think, for instance with the victories against Lille and Zagreb. All competitions we play are important to us, whether it is the championship or the cup we need to give our maximum everywhere. The League Cup competition is not easy but it is the shortest route to winning something. ” The whole club seems to be taking this competition very seriously, and one shouldn’t count on Garde to field a B team, despite the proximity with the Marseille game. And given the tone of some interviews of players given during the week, it seems some of them are projecting themselves in the final already, at the Stade de France in Paris… Self assurance or overconfidence?
However, overcoming Lorient on their -synthetic- pitch will be everything but a walk in the park. Currently tenth of the championship, despite losing Morel, Amalfitano, Gameiro before the start of the season, Lorient are aware that this test is now the only way to win honors and reach Europe via the Europa League. Unfortunate finalists in 2002, thrashed by Bordeaux, the Brittany club would like to add an event next to the Coupe de France won that year. To do this, they will need to play better than last December when Lyon beat them more easily than expected, thanks to Lacazette. As he will be starting today, he may be well inspired to emulate this feat again. Especially because he will face another Lyonnais -ex Lyonnais, actually, since this week- in Lamine Gassama, who was just transfered to Lorient hoping for more playing time, and rightly so as he will immediately be starting his first game…against OL. Ain’t that funny?
The teams:
Lorient : Audard – Mareque, Koné, Romao, Gassama (yes, still a week ago he was an OL player!)– Mvuemba, Coutadeur, Bartheleme – Douniama, Monnet-Paquet, Emeghara
Lyon : Lloris – Reveillère, Cris (yes, the captain is still a licensed central defender, and yes, he’s back to fitness… at last), Umtiti, Cissokho – Gonalons, Kallstrom – Lisandro, Bastos, Lacazette – Gomis
Allez l’OL!
