Coupet Suffers “Mysterious” Injury…Again
By: Inara | June 4th, 2007
A day after the France – Ukraine match, reports circulated that Gregory Coupet had to drop out of the squad due to an “unspecified” injury. He’ll also miss the match against Georgia on Wednesday.
What this means is that Coupet is starting his holiday a little earlier than his teammates (the Lyon website says that he just needs 15 days of rest), and also, that he has a history of ill-timed injuries (last October, he re-injured his hand during the Scotland match and had to miss the match against Faroe Islands).
Today, Reuters reported that Coupet had a slight abdominal injury, but tongues are already wagging because of the shady way his injury was reported. After all, why wait two days to clarify a small and obvious injury?
The thing is that Coupet and Domenech don’t get along. In fact, Coupet publicly stated that he’d rather spend his Friday nights being hung upside down by his toes than spend an extra minute of his time with Domenech. So it’s entirely possible that those two got into a falling out for the umpteenth time, and Coupet did something stupid, like leave the team.
It wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened.

I thought they patched things up. Well I guess not.

I flip flop on Domenech. I think his tactics suck, he doesnt get along with most of his players and he is such an arse when comes to calling up players when they dont want to be (makelele). But I like the direction he is moving the team in, with youth be integrated and shedding the WC winning side of 98 which have prolonged their careers to far. But Coupet has every right to not like Domenech, after the dumbass picked Barthez over him for the World Cup…that went well in the final pk shootout.

I knew something was up as soon as I saw three keepers on the callup list. No international team needs to call up three keepers!! So I’m saddened by this but not surprised, especially given the history between the two. But I really had hopes that he would be the NT keeper at least through Euro 08.
This is one of those times I wish I had fallen in love with the England team so I could read all the details in the tabloids.
Coupet still hasn’t signed an extension with Lyon, has he? Wonder what this means. (MLS, right? It means he’s coming to MLS, along with Claude Makelele. And, of course, Zidane.)

Sometimes I wonder what the deal is with Coupet. Two years back, he threatened to leave Lyon unless he got the deal he wanted.
I hope hope hope that he hasn’t gotten into a scuffle with Domenech because this is his only chance to play on the big stages for France. If he pisses off Ray enough, then he’ll be dropped.
Just ask Giuly. Or Chimbonda. Or Pires. Or…I could go on.
