Debacle at Nantes: Post-Game Break-Down
By: John | December 6th, 2008
Hugo Lloris going the wrong way on an Ivan Klasnic game-winning penalty kick
First of all, sorry to all you guys for not getting up a pre-game post, there was a slight mix-up. Anyway, I thought I’d do a post-game breakdown to make-up for it. So…
With both Karim Benzema and Juninho out, and most of the other players being played limited minutes/ rested for the mid-week Bayern CL match, I wasn’t expecting anything more than a probable tie vs. Nantes, or at the very least, a narrow victory. With the back-four intact, the two defensive midfielders starting and Cris regaining his old form in recent weeks and forming a symbiosis with Boumsong, surely the front four attackers could muster up a goal. I would never have imagined anything else than the two aformentioned results. But my logic and expectations were way off. As I was busy lauding the two Lyon players who, to me, stood-out head and shoulders above the rest on the pitch, who would’ve thought that those two players would give up the goals that would sink Lyon.
Player Perfomances:
Hugo Lloris: Didn’t have much to do all game and there wasn’t anything he could’ve done on the first goal.
Cris: Solid game. The Cris of old is back!! Several good stops and seems to be getting better with every game.
Boumsong: Also was very solid. No lapses in judgement today. Is forming a great pairing with Cris.
Gassama: Is becoming a defensive stud, although he gave up the winning penalty. Shut down almost all runs down the right, and most of the match was quiet from that side.
Grosso: Quiet game. Didn’t really get up field like at Fiorentina, but things were quiet on the left.
Makoun: Also had a quiet game. Not much of a presence on defense and like Grosso, didn’t get foward as in the Fiorentina match.
Toulan: The ex-Nantais had a strong presence. Lots of energy and worked hard in the midfield. Along with Gassama was one of the most notabale players on the pitch- until Ederson came on- but like Gassama, gave up a goal, letting the calcified Ivan Klasnic past him to score the equaliser early in the second half.
Kallstrom: Not effective, besides his freekick that Piquionne pounced on after coming-off of Alonzo’s hand for Lyon’s only goal. Had some very errant shots on goal and looked exhausted when he came of the pitch in the 80th minute.
Delgado: Very low-key. Carlos was playing the #10 in the 4-2-3-1, something he looked completely out of place doing. Nothing spectacular from the Argentine.
Keita: Brought some energy. Was taken off by Puel early in the second half, probably being saved for Bayern.
Piquionne: Freddy capitalized on his limited playing time with the utmost of efficiency bagging a goal just before the half to give Lyon a 1-0 lead. Left the game with a knock to his knee, replaced by Fred.
Subs:
Ederson: Honorato was an infusion of energy to a Lyon that was waning since the beginning of the second half. He had several good crosses and balls into the box from the right side.
Fred: Invisible, except for getting hit with a yellow for “flopping,” in the box, which I thought was underserved. Maybe it was the bad stream, but I really did think he was fouled.
Fabio Santos: Provided some excellent runs down the left but faded away.
The first half belonged to Lyon, and indeed, until the 60mns when Klasnic- I really wish he and Pagis of Rennes, picked other teams to have break-out games against- scored the equalizer, Lyon were in control. From there-on it was all downhill. Nantes began to attack incessently, but except for those two costly mistakes by Toulalan and Gassama, the back-line withstood the assault very well. The offense was absolutely anemic in the second half, the only ray of light being Ederson. For me this game again highlighted the need for scorers other than Benz and Juni. I’m of the opinion that once those two players are gone, Lyon is in trouble offensively. I know that the fowards were mainly third team players, but if we are really a big club, then we should be able to beat bottom-of-the-table teams with just three or four, third-team players sprinkled in amoungst the starters. Lyon now have just a three point lead on second place Marseille who are coming to town next Sunday looking to squeeze into first place with us.
Starting Lineup:
Lloris
Gassama – Cris – Boumsong – Grosso
Toulalan – Makoun
Keita – Delgado – Kallstrom
Piquionne
Subs:
Ederson for Keita 61′
Fred for Piquionne 65′
Dos Santos for Kallstrom 79′

Inara was right-on about the “Glass Ghanean” Mensah. This is a disaster. I don’t even think that Faure is back from his injury yet.

This injury crisis is unbeleivable. I mean, there certainly are many clubs with far heavier injury problems in recent history, but I’ve really never seen a team unable to field a back line!
Now, what should we do if both Mensah and Faure are unavailable? Could we really use Fabio Santos or Grosso at the CB position? And if we use Grosso there, who would be our left-back, Kalstrom, Kolo, Makoun? And what about the reserve players licenced for the CL, there must be some, right?

John: any way Lyon can get Guillaume Hoarau? i can’t believe he just overtook Benz as ligue 1’s top scorer.

Hey guys, I’m thinking about going to Lyon for a match sometime this year maybe – possibly during March. I was wondering what sort of prices tickets are and how easy it is to get them. I’ve signed up on OLWeb, but something always seems to go wrong when I try and get tickets.

Lefutur: Hoarau is one of my dream signings- Gourcuff being the other!!! I’d love to see him along side of Remy! Can’t wait to see him on the NT along side Benzema.

Nikola: this crisis is outrageous. It seems to get worse by the day and you have to wonder when it will end. I hope the winter transfer window gets here as soon as possible, because Lyon can’t afford anymore injuries.

WOW lyons defence is Fucked we need 1 more cb(Luisao)left back(Bastos) and striker(Odemwingie/Vucinic)

I think for Bayern play this
Lloris
Gassama-Boumsong-Santos-Grosso
Toulalan-Makoun-Valdivia
Ederson Kallstrom
Benzema
Play the three defencive midfielders to protect the ligue 2 quality defence, have no width and Ed and Kall as attacking mids, with this formation we should get the 0-0.Posted from

Benz will play?? That is something new. I heard that he will not play, because Puel say that he will not risk to lose Benz before key match against Marseille at Gerland. Wow now we have chance to win and to prove that we are strong even we have hospital in team.
Line up :
Lloris
Gassama Toulalan Boumsong Grosso
Makoun Santos Kallstrom
Kieta Fred BenzemaI now I throw Benz to left flank, but I still belive that Fred can score and imporve his position in first team. We must have minimal two strikers who can score against every team. Allez Lyonnais
Bayern will fall with three goals in Rensing’s net.Posted from

“Sidney,” I like your line-up. Exactly what I was thinking except for Benzema on the wing.

Thanks John. Well I throw Benz on left flank, the reason is maybe stupid, but does we have any left player? I didn’t hear about Govou in first 11. He is suspended or I don’t know what. I just know that he are not in first 11.
Lloris
Gassama Toulalan Boumsong Grosso
Keita Makoun Kallstrom Ederson
Fred BenzemaPuel also can try 4-4-2 formation with Makoun and Kallstrom in middlefield, and Keita and Ederson on flanks. He can also put Delgado on left flank and throw Ederson behind striker(s).
Lloris
Gassama Toulalan Boumsong Grosso
Makoun Santos
Keita Ederson Delgado
Benzema
- that is someting like thatPosted from

As far as I know Govou is in. He spoke at Puel’s press conference today. I’m starting to think that maybe Toulan’s skills are more useful in the midfield, and that if Santos can play better at CB he should be back there, but if not, I think it will be:
Lloris
Gassama-Toulalan-Boumsong-Grosso
Santos-Makoun-Kallstrom
Keita-Benzema-GovouPosted from
Costa Rica

I must agree with you John. That’s the most possible first 11 for the match. But why Puel don’t use Delgado? He show very good form. I just hope that Lyon will beat Bayern, That’s all. Allez Allez Lyonnais
- for today’s match I hope that Bordeaux will CRUSHED Roma
- 1-2 for Girondines Wendell and Gourcouff will be the heroes, for Roma Totti will score only one timaPosted from

Sam – you must come to see a Lyon match! Tickets are usually readily available for all non gala matches, Gerland has rarely played to capacity this season. Prices for ‘normal’ matches start at about 15 euros and don’t go up much beyond 60 euros, which is amazing value against English prices.
OL web really is the easiest way to get your tickets, you can even print them out at home. What didn’t work with the web site when you tried before?
And if you come over be prepared for much less noise from the supporters than at an English game – but you’ll see a much more beautiful game (obviously!)Posted from

Quite frankly I’d prefer Toulalan as cb. He’s just got so much more defensive ability than anyone else. He’d make an excellent sweeper. I’d prefer Ederson or Delgado over Santos. Because I’m fairly certain Bayern will score. And we need all the attacking options we can possibly have if that happens. Hopefully Puel takes this match seriously. If we lose we’ll likely get drawn to Roma, Barca, Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal, or Juventus as points stand. And if we don’t sort out our defensive troubles, almost all of those teams will most likely end our hopes of getting any further in the competition. I prefer only having to worry about getting drawn to Chelsea, Inter or Real Madrid (unless they keep sucking). The other likely second place teams seem highly beatable if we keep our nerve.

I don’t think finishing 1st or 2nd in the group is going to change much… If Lyon finish first, they’ll have one of (likely) Chelsea, Inter Milan, Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid, Villareal, Porto, Real Madrid. If Lyon finish second then it’s Roma, Panathanaikos, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal or Juventus. So whilst Sporting and Porto seem to be “easy” if Lyon finish first, playing Chelsea, Inter or Real would be very hard, and Atletico and Villareal aren’t too bad either. Finishing second would mean that Barca, Liverpool and United are the hard picks, Pana is the “easy” pick, with Juventus, Roma and Arsenal as “average” opposition…
I think resting Benzema would be a good option, since winning against Marseille is far more important than beating Bayern, and if he worsens his injury it could turn very sour. Also, Lyon -do- need to learn to deal without Benzema up front…
I think a 4-5-1 could not be a bad thing : Lloris – Gassama, Boumsong, Toulalan, Grosso – Keita, Santos, Ederson, Makoun, Delgado – Fred
Perhaps Govou instead of Keita, but I think Keita-Ederson-Delgado has more chance of being able to break down the Bayern defence.Posted from

Are you sure Mensah will not play ? I don’t think so.
But if he cannot, I guess we may try a new system, like the old Bayern : 3-5-2.
I know it’s very dangerous to change in that way just for a so difficult game, but why not ?————- Lloris———————
——Gassama – Boumsong – Grosso——–
Govou ————————– Kallstrom
—- Toulalan ——— Makoun ———-
————– Ederson ——————
———- Fred – Benzema —————Why these guys in these spots :
Because Govou and Kallstrom have ever played as RB and LB, so they’ll be able to help Gassama and Grosso when Ribery and Schweinsteiger will cross their flanks.
Also, with their good physics abilities, they are capable of running almost all the game, I mean going back when Bayern is attacking, and helping forward when we have the ball.
Toulalan can play on a wing (he did quite well with the french NT, on the right !) and Benzema is able to go on the LW too, if Kallstrom and Govou are in defense. And don’t forget Ederson who is capable of going in the 2 wings, and be our playmaker.
I think THIS system, with THESE players really can surprise Bayern, at least in the first half, and reinforce our fragile defense without weaken our attack (Just imagine having Fred, Benz, Ederson, Govou and Kallstrom in attacking phases, with Toule and Makoun in their back in case of counter attack. Seems good, right ?)But that’s just my idea, I don’t believe we’ll see that tonight.

Hey Storm – thanks for the reply. When I try and validate my information – ‘Un problème s’est produit lors de la validation de votre compte billetterie. Nous vous invitons à effectuer de nouveau cette opération plus tard.’ this always comes up. I think its to do with my phone number which isn’t proper as it won’t allow me to fill out a proper one with 0044 at the start. Good to hear that the ticket prices sound reasonable. Surprised to hear you say to expect a much quieter game, as I was really expecting the noise to be much louder than in England. It will be interesting to compare the atmospheres. I’ve always thought English crowds were tame as we’re not allowed any flares or massive flags/banners in the way other countries are. Also, at the Gerland is there a stampede towards the front of the fence whenever a goal is scored? I could imagine that being quite a scary experience

Jo that is superb idea. Lyon really can try that formation and if false Puel can turn in 4-4-3 or 4-4-2 formation.
The Lyon press conference
Claude Puel
How will you deal with the absence of Juninho? Who is going to take the free-kicks?
We’ll see. We have a number of possibilities, even if they aren’t as good as Juninho. We have players such as Delgado, Källström, Mounier , Ederson and Grosso who are all capable of taking free-kicks and corners. We worked well on them this week in training. Having said that, I’m not convinced that’s where this game will be won or lost.Is the fact that you’re first in the group going to have an effect on your tactics?
European matches are always very high quality, very fast. Since the start of the competition, we’ve been playing well. Each time we’ve been up for it. Tomorrow won’t be any different. Bayern are a team that likes playing football, a team that likes to attack. So I don’t think this will finish scoreless.Bayern are coming off a series of wins… can you break that run?
We have all the ingredients we need to stop this Bayern side. Away, we pushed them hard at their ground in the first leg. Tomorrow we’ll be playing at our ground, in front of our supporters. It’s good to be playing this ‘finale’ at the Stade Gerland. I don’t think either side will settle for anything other than a win.Sydney Govou
How are you approaching this match?
It’s the final group match. For the moment we’re first. We have a slight advantage. But I’m not sure it would be wise to sit back and look for the draw. It’s never easy to play for a 0-0. That would be a mistake on our part. At the same time, a draw could prove important for the rest of the competition.Agaisnt you tomorrow will be a certain Franck Ribéry… What do you think if him?
He’s a player I really like, a really quality player. More than just his experience, he thinks on the field. He can analyse the game very quickly and he is everywhere on the pitch. When he’s 100 per cent fit, he’s very, very dangerous.John do you will write pre-match preview?

Sam : I think that Storm wanted to notice that Gerland is not Anfield or Old Trafford on big games. For sure.
But English stadiums are quieter since few years, when tickets prices went too high for “modest” supporters. So you will compare and tell us what you think about it !
What kind of games do you plan to see ? That depends a lot of that. Come to see OL / ASSE, and you’ll hear a loud crowd !

I’m gonna have to see if any of my friends are up for it as well, but I think I could get to Lyon and back for a few days at a reasonably cheap price. I’m thinking about a game like Sochaux, as I want to see what I’d expect to be a Lyon win which is the most important thing for me. I’m not particularly keen on going to one of the fiery games or anything – like ASSE, as I might get out of my depth in a foreign country. Having real problems on OLWeb now, it says there’s a problem with my date of birth which I can’t really figure out now

Sam – one thing to be aware of is that the final match dates aren’t confirmed until quite late (usually about two or three weeks before the match). Everything depends on the final Canal + TV schedule. In practise what this usually means is that a match that is ‘unconfirmed’ for a Saturday 19:00 KO may get moved to 21:00 or to either of these times on the Sunday. OL often gets the 21:00 Sunday slot as its a good TV slot.Just thought I’d mention as it would be sad to have a flight home booked around that time! If you’re planning to stay the whole WE and not go back before Monday you should be fine.
Re the noise – maybe it is quieter in the UK now, I haven’t been to a UK match for several years. What I meant though was that the general level of cheering and chanting is MUCH less than it is(was) in England. Obviously it still exists but it is noticably quieter and more sedate even in the virage (- noisy) ends. And no there isn’t the general stampede to the goal mouth after a goal.
Again I may be out of touch now with English games; but my impression is that v. the English grounds the general atmosphere at Gerland is a very comfortable and safe one. I usually go to matches with my son and have never had reason to question our security. I’ve honestly never seen any violence or even post match brawls. Also the organisation of the tube service after the match is amazingly civilised and well organised.
If you do go you’ll have to let us know so that Jo and I can teach you the words to main OL songs!Posted from

The way you describe it makes it sound great. I’ve got added incentive to go as it could well be Juni and Benzema’s last seasons at Lyon – which I simply can’t miss!
