Do Lyon Have Goal Scoring Woes?

By: Inara | September 24th, 2008

According to L’Equipe, this is Lyon’s best league start to a season since 2001/2002. Unbeaten in all their games, with five wins and a draw, they are already four points ahead of second placed Marseille. And despite having a defense that would make even the bravest of people whimper with fear, Lyon conceded only two goals so far, giving them the best defense in the league.

However, Lyon have only netted 10 goals in that same amount of time. Marseille and even Le Mans (!!!) have scored more. But what’s troubling is not the amount Lyon are scoring but where the goals are coming from. All 10 of Lyon’s goals came from four people - five from Karim Benzema, two apiece from Juninho and Jean II Makoun, and one penalty from Ederson (who got to take it only because Juninho, Benzema, and Kim Kallstrom weren’t on the pitch).

And Eight of those goals were the result of some sort of set piece.

Normally, I wouldn’t think this was a big deal, but it’s been six games into the season - seven if you count the Champions League - and Lyon haven’t shown any sign of lessening their dependence on set pieces. Lyon’s difficulty in scoring from open play is troubling, and it’s something that needs to be addressed right away.

It would also be nice if more players chipped in offensively. Despite having such a great attack force, Puel still hasn’t found a way to utilize them to their best abilities. And that’s something else he needs to get moving on. This weekend is a tough match against Nancy, followed by an even tougher match at Bayern. And as we all know, they certainly don’t have problems scoring.

Other newsies:

John Mensah is absolutely traumatized from his run in with the police. That explains why he didn’t play against Fiorentina - he was in the middle of a mental breakdown.

Setbacks are continuing on Project OL Land. The Decines community has put up such a ferocious opposition that estimates have been pushed from June 2010 to June 2012. Though the Decines community promises to boycott even that.

Okay, not to be a quitter or anything, but if there are so many issues with the Decines site, isn’t there somewhere else that Aulas can build the new stadium? Last time I checked, Lyon wasn’t Beijing. Surely there is space to be found somewhere.

Aulas in typical fashion announced that Karim Benzema’s release clause is €100m. As we all know, release clauses are almost always pointless and are rarely paid to their full amount, but I’m guessing Aulas wants everyone to know exactly how difficult it will be for people to sign Lyon’s star player. Especially Manchester City, who think that all they need to do is offer Benzema €125,000 per week to land his signature. As if!

Cris says that he does not need another knee operation, so just leave him alone. He only needs a couple of days and some more playing time to get back to normal.

    comments on “other news”…

first mensah. i’ve seen two different pieces of misinformation in the englsih language press about the incident.

first concerns mensah being suspended for 10 days… this comes from not knowing that an ITT (interruption temporaire de travail) is a doctor’s certificate saying you cannot work. besides something to show your boss, it serves to appreciate prejudice suffered by the victim for insurance or for judiciary purposes.

the second is in the article linked: it’s not mensah who wants to press charges and OL who advises against it; OL wants to issue a complaint and mensah doesn’t want to. my guess is that there’s a gray area between police brutality and interfering with a police officer that no one wants to dig into too deeply.

second, OL-land. there really aren’t many places to put this. the first site under consideration was within walking distance of my house and not only for that reason would have been the best site, but it was a) a trifle too small and b) much more expensive by the acre.

the chosen site is about as far out of town you can put the stadium and still say it’s in lyon. for the moment it has access problems, or rather the whole area has access problems since its densification has outpaced the road system, and the only public transport out there is a tramway. without the metro there will be problems. the metro is already extending that way; there is no firm project as far as decines yet but stadium or no it will one day go there anyway.

the real problem is that lots of people in decines just wish they could turn back the clock 15 years and live in the country again… i’ll bet the indians wouldn’t mind getting manhattan back either, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

anyway, 2012 for 2010 is about par for the course. an as far as i care, every year they stay in gerland is a bonus, i don’t want them to leave anyway.

Scoring-wise, the problem may be lack of continuity at the other positions. Aside from Benzema, Juni, Govou and the two DMs, no one else has been able to start at the same postion with any consistency. This is due to injuries on defense and the abudance of players Puel has to accomodate. I think if Ederson got more, and constant playing time, we could possibly have another scorer. Also, Kallstrom and Bodmer have been playing in the defense. Other contributing problems may be: Gouvou only scores for the NT; we play with two DMs; or maybe the lone-striker thing isn’t working. Maybe we need a second-striker or another center foward to free-up Benzema. Maybe we need to bring back the 4-3-3. But that can’t happen until the defense is sorted-out. Anyway, I’m happy that our defense is solid now, with all the “bandaids” we’re putting on at CB and LB. Imagine when we have all our starters back and they are used to playing together. And if it weren’t for Cris having a melt-down, we would have given up no goals in 6 matches. I think once the defense gels, Puel can then begin to experiment with more offensive formations and we’ll start seeing more open-play goals. I hope.

It seems to me that Puel’s philosophy on winning games is to create a solid defensive block and make sure that you get at least one goal more than your opponent. So far Lyon have done that so Puel probably isnt as worried as you are. And I believe that you already remarked that OL are turning into a second half team that score last in the game to kill off the opponent. That’s probably by design also.

lefutur: all your points are correct. And I think it speaks to the effectiveness of the collective defensive philosophy Puel has instilled in the squad, that we have the best defense in L1, with the back-line in as bad a shape as it is in. Also, I remember in that Benzema interview that I posted a while back, that Karim said that Puel had asked him to save himself for the second half. I think the issue is: why are only two players doing the bulk of our scoring and why have none of our goals come from open play? What happens if either Juni or Benz goes down? And what are the factors contributing to the lack of open-play scoring and how do we remedy that? Those are the questions that need to be answered. There’s no doubt as to what Puel’s strategy is, but I don’t know that these problems have anything to do with that strategy.

Really, I’m not that much worry about that non-existent goals un open play.
If we have so much free kick, it’s because we are often in the last 25 meters.
    And that’s open play.

I would be worry if we spent almost 90 minutes in our half of the pitch, and finally win by our only free kick.
    But that’s not the case.

I think, like John said, that when our player will be used to play together, we will score really more easily in open play.

Had you noticed that the goal against Le Havre is 100 % “made in” new recruits ?
Mensah, to Makoun, to Pjanic, to Piquionne who earn a penalty kick which is scored by… Ederson !

Imagine this 5 guys almost didn’t know each other just 3 months ago ! Just Crazy.

Regarding scoring, despite Puel’s defensive image I found there were positive signs of his attention to scoring: assigning Sonny Anderson as coach of the strikers, several training sessions, exclusively dedicated to scoring, with also wingers and midfielders in front of the net ..

I think the issues mostly come from the players, and are largely related to a form of Benzema reliance, ie laziness (the other potential scorers are used to, and therefore expect, a brilliant goal or a brilliant assist from him, much like the rest of the French National Basketball Team has been stopping playing to watch Tony Parker -playing like a god BTW- in the recent Euro qualifiers).
There are people who show goodwill, who try and will eventually get there, like Piquionne of course, but also Mounier and Ederson, and possibly Pjanic; There are also people who have the fire power, like Toulalan and KK, and are not afraid to use it, but lack the radar to send the missile on target (although la Toule may not be far from it, especially with Les Bleus, probably remembering that before being a pro he used to score often).
But I am a bit disappointed in a player like Govou, who’s better with France, i think, than with Lyon despite his regular starting spot. Even when he hasn’t been very visible in most of the game (like in his recent appearances) he has the potential to unlock the situation with a clever goal, and could play the role Wiltord once had of the typical last 10 minutes savior. Yet that isn’t really happening. And instead of missiles in the net, he is now throwing a hand grenade at Aulas in L’Equipe…

Maybe that lack of power of Govou on a pitch has a link with that missile sended to Aulas.
We know a player have to be 100% in his head to be excellent.
That’s why Mensah didn’t play against Fiorentina.

If Sid has a problem with JMA, I can understand he’s not the player we all know when he come in.

But that just suppositions. I think we so often forget the incredible defensive job Govou make on his rght side.
That explain why the two goals of the Fiorentina (and almost all italian actions) came from our left side.
They didn’t even try on the right.

Ronan: Good point. I only saw Peter play once in L1, the first season I started watching and that was also the year he left Lille. I have a bunch of Lille games recorded on DVD from that season, so maybe I’ll go back and take a look and also watch Bodmer-Makoun-Keita in action. I saw him play for the Nigerian NT and I liked what I saw.

Odemwingie? I saw him in a Champions League game (Lille vs Anderlecht) and liked his technique and speed.. not his poor finshing. But the reality is that since the start of the 2006-2007 season (when he scored 5 goals in the first days) then he went into a profound silence for the rest of the season. Then Lokomotiv Moskow baught him for the remainder of the season (4 goals in 14 games as far as I know); and now, 2 months before the end of the russian championship, he had a mediocre 2008 season, and arguments with several of the team, and is hoping to get back to Ligue 1. Monaco seemed to have some interest during the summer, but it didn’t materialize.
So, overall, Odemwingie is hardly a secret weapon I think.
