Fabio Grosso’s Official Presentation
By: Inara | July 9th, 2007Fabio Grosso…

…ran away from Italy…

…and was adopted by Lyon.
Excerpts from his google translated interview:
Fabio Grosso, why did you accept the offer of the Olympic Lyonese?
Because it is one of the largest clubs in Europe. It is difficult to be unaware of this club today. It has an enormous potential. At its head, there is a large president. Lyon gained six consecutive titles. It seeks with always achieving broad goals.Which reasons pushed you to leave it Inter Milan?
The Lyons offer. When one receives an offer as important as that of the OL, one studies it seriously. And then, I have the insurance to continue to dispute the League of the Champions. This club is very ambitious. I know that it will be very difficult to preserve this level because the adversaries will be very justified with the idea to make fall the sextuple champion but I hope to obtain great satisfactions. This club the merit.Do you fear the reception of the French public?
Absolutely not. I made my duty with Italy. I gave the maximum for my nation as I always did during my career. I will give the maximum for Lyon. I hope that there will be no animosity on behalf of the French public. If it is the case, I will do all so that that occurs well. What can carry out the OL in League of the Champions?
The objective is always of going possible further. Sometimes, the adventure stops front but one must be ambitious. A club as the OL must unceasingly aim at highest.
I am content now. Grosso isn’t the best left back out there and obviously not as good as Eric Abidal, but he actually wants to be at Lyon, which is a nice change from the usual. Grosso said some very nice things during his press conference, and maybe he was just being polite, but it still made me warm and mushy inside (especially the part where he spoke French!). (A thought: am I replacing my Tiago infatuation with one involving Grosso? Scary).

I just made a film (it’s for my blog) with what I recorded on my camera from the press conference this morning. But you seem to have find an official version ! Great for everybody

You have a blog? What’s the link?
Please post the link anyway! The official version is often edited and missing scenes, so I’d love to see your version.
So how was Grosso? Did he seem comfortable? Awkward? Happy? Sad? And how did other people react to him?

Cruel. Oh so cruel. On the same day Italia is celebrating the anniversary of Berlin, we lose one of our own. (Picture me going into Nancy Kerrigan mode here) Why? Why?
My one piece of solace is that Roma turned him down repeatedly (and are now going after Belletti and Sylvinho). Lateral move my ass
(Sorry sorry, I couldn’t resist. No debates. Please)

Well, Lyon turned down Sylvinho (Barca offered him for the Abidal deal).
. At the end of the day, we tier 2 clubs get rejects from big clubs. It’s the way of the world. Here’s a question for you: in a lot of message boards, I noticed people upset that Grosso’s leaving Italy (though they are happy he’s leaving Inter). He couldn’t get a spot onto one of the top teams in Serie A, so he went abroad. What’s the point in staying in Serie A if he moves to a club like Udinese?

I do have a blog for my job. I sometimes do some chronicles and make litles movies about what’s happened in Lyon. Don’t think it’s interessant for you because I haven’t speak about OL on it for 2 months. But I can show you the video. You won’t see anything else that you can see on the official video, about Grosso. But you will see “alive” the new jerseys. And you will hear me asking the question about Grosso’s fear of french public ! lol
It’s on youtube. When the video is validated, I give here the link.Posted from

Because, quite simply, he is now an icon after the goal against Germany and the last penalty in Berlin. It’s purely sentimental. No one would care if Cristian Zaccardo went to Lyon. Fabio just means that much.
I suppose the point could be made as well that he left Italia once he signed for Inter.
How strange regarding Sylvinho. The funny part about Fabio is he’s PERFECT for Spalletti’s 4-2-3-1. Like he was born for it. At times, the Roma defense can be aptly described as “organized chaos.” The LB, Tonetto, spent the majority of his career as an attacking left winger. And even though neither are young, Grosso at his peak is an upgrade over Tonetto and wouldn’t kill Roma defensively. I think the spot has been spoken for by Roma’s version of Nesta, so maybe that’s why he was turned down.
But you’re lucky to have him. Just give him back soon. And Bodmer.

Nice add. Grosso looks like a very nice guy. Good luck to him in Lyon!

Maybe he was being polite, but he didn’t have to be this polite, don’t you think? He seems to understand and respect the tradition of this club and know exactly what he was getting himself into.
I think I like him already.

He’s a humble player, which I like, and he doesn’t have a diva attitude (though as a WC winner, he could have), so he’ll fit right into the team mentality.
I hope he’ll be an example to other foreign players.

Thanks Jo!
And nice video - great job with the editing
So here’s a question for you - at the press conference, were people being friendly with Grosso? I know Baros had a tough time integrating, but that’s because of communication issues. Hopefully Grosso won’t have those same problems.

Oh Yes people was ! He even was applauding, something that never happens in this type of press conference… That’s why I noticed it in my video.
I think that was a kind of sigh of relief for lyonnais, who was very worried about the Abidal’s departure… And seing a wolrd cup champion’s really fulfill every supporters.
Usually, press conferences are boring. I liked the one of yesterday
