Finally, Lyon vs. Toulouse
By: Inara | August 10th, 2008Forgive this abbreviated match preview, but I’m in the middle of trying to find a new apartment, so things are a bit chaotic in my life at the moment. I’d planned a nice, long preview for the first game of the season, but I guess that will have to wait until next week.

August 10, 2008
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3 PM Eastern time (21:00 CET, 20:00 GMT)
Toulouse is always annoying to play against, but now that Johan I-love-to-score-against-Lyon Elmander is at Bolton and Achille Pain-in-the-ass Emana is at Real Betis, hopefully things will be a little easier. Of course, they have a new manager and some new players, including Etienne Didot from Rennes, so they might be super inspired.
As for Lyon, this is not only the first match of the season but the first home game as well. For many of the players, this is their first debut in the Gerland in OL colors, so they will be eager to make a good impression.
Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Réveillère, Clerc, Boumsong, Bodmer, Faure, Cris, Grosso – Toulalan, Makoun, Källström, Juninho – Ederson, Pjanic, Benzema, Govou, Piquionne, Baros, Delgado
John Mensah and Fred are still not match fit while Kader Keita is still nursing an injured arm. Unfortunately, even with these drop outs, none of the youth players besides Sebastien Faure (whose presence is still mystifying me) made it onto the bench. I’m especially surprised not to see Anthony Mounier, who surely ought to be there. And to think that four players are out injured at the moment as well – we really do have a crowded bench this year!
I’m a little concerned to see Mathieu Bodmer listed amongst the defenders. That doesn’t bode well for Jean-Alain Boumsong at any rate. And with Ederson healthy again, Puel has an awful lot of options in midfield as well.
Lloris
Clerc – Cris – Bodmer – Grosso
Toulalan – Makoun
Govou – Juninho – Delgado
Benzema
That’s the lineup I expect though it’s not really the one I’d want. But take comfort from the fact that this lineup should be able to win over a weakened Toulouse side. I hope.
You can try to find streams here. Again, I would really appreciate it if those who do manage to find links to the game would share them here. If you prefer, you can follow either L’Equipe’s or Football365.fr’s liveblog (I recommend the latter). Also, if you have Setanta or Setanta Broadband, this game will be broadcast live.
Alright guys, let’s do this. A strong, confident victory will ensure that Lyon’s season starts off on the right foot.

is it just me or with all the attacking talents we brought in, govou really shouldn’t be playing all that much? :/

That was SO DELICIOUS to come back to Gerland tonight, especially with the 3-0 victory !
This 2 months have seemed 2 years !We were more than 36 000 spectators, which is a lot considering we’re in August, the time when Lyon is dead (because of everybody leaving for holidays !)
Juni made a fantastic match, so did Lloris (but he had not so much work !).
You have to know that a banner had been made by the “Bad gones” to thank Coupet. That said that he is a incredible goalkeeper and a fantastic men. I was proud of it.
Some OL supporters whisttled when Piquionne entered, but they finally was not so much. Others supporters sang his name. I guess we have to give time to time.
And you have to know that some of the “bad gones” supporters had on their shirt a little sentence “anti fluo” to protest against our new yellow shirt.
They argue that it’s not OL’s colors. That’s all for what I saw tonight.
By the way Inara, Mounier was suspended tonight. That’s why he wasn’t with the group. That’s probably still because of the CFA incident.
But I was very surprised not to see Cris. OLweb say that he just has a minor injury. But this morning he was with the group. Weird.Allez l’OL !!

yawn [this is becoming boring] lyon better fucking win CL this season because they are european joke atm, 7 wins without a european trophy, this is unheard of

there’s a reason why even more celebrated, successful, and well-known teams out there have only won the CL a couple of times if at all. it’s not like flipping a fuckin’ coin.
i wish your logic was actually correct (as opposed to being fucking stupid), because in that case Lyon would be like, two time european champions or something?

i believe they had the chance atleast 3 years ago when they had stronger teams as opposed to now. if they hadn’t sold their players, i’m sure they would atleast had 1 CL trophy. monaco nearly did it when it kept its players for 2 seasons. do you why they fail, because they suck. by that i mean lugue 1 is incompentent, (it like a group of dumb people, and they’s one guy less dumber than the rest. he will look smarter becuase he is are less dumb than the rest, it doesn’t make him a genius) as result they look strong in france but in europe they get raped

Paillot being left out is a preclusion to his move to Grenoble, probably on loan. Mounier recieved a three match ban for his incident in the CFAs last year, so he will miss next weekend as well otherwise he would have been on the bench. Cris also had a slight knock, this was a precautionary measure if anything, but honestly, Bodmer still? Id prefer to let Sandy play and prove he needs another loan for more experience rather then never doing anything for us. Bodmer is best in midfield, play him there!

gaston; First of all if you don’t like Ligue 1 then get the fuck out
Second of all, Marseille won the CL title in 1993 *touch me plz*. Thirdly, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villareal, Sevilla and so on never won a title, do they suck? Dortmund 97′ – did you jerk of to them?Posted from

mrcham, if i didn’t like ligue1 i wouldn’t comment in this section (how stupid of you). my criticism is because of fustration of french clubs, just because i like something doesn’t mean i can’t criticise it. let me to tell you something, after CL was created ,each time a french club has won ligue 1, they have advanced to ATLEAST european semi final at their height, L’OM, PSG, Monaco, borduex, nantes, stade reims, ASSE. all those club at one time when they where the best in france reached european semi-final. but lyon ???? NEVER
and all tose team you mentioned have been to european final at one time UC and CL.

gaston: Villareal or Sevilla haven’t been to a European final.
Lyons rise has been extrememly rapid, they are not such an old club relatively speaking and it takes time to build a European history. I don’t think anyone thinks they’re a “joke”.

Gaston.
You just forget that the Champion’s league exist since 1992.
Before that, that was the european champions club cup.
That’s not “just” a change of name.
The configuration changed, and it’s now FAR MORE difficult to win it.Just take a look to the club OM played against in 1993.
Except the big Milan AC in final, you’ll see there’s not really so much big clubs that you have to meet nowadays !Please, stop comparing what is not comparable.

Jo and Ush (i’m not comparing)
sevilla won the uefa cup twice
villereal has been to uefa semi finalmy point is each time a club in france has dominated whether is lugue 1 coupe de france or french league cup. they have adavnced further in any european tournament. L’om in 1991 and 1993 CL final 1999 and 2004 uefa cup, monaco in 1994, 1998, 2004. bordeuax reached 1996 semi final. psg reached cup winers cup. nantes Cl semi final.
these teams where dominant in those years and advance no matter how small or big they where or their history, lyon however has won 7 TIMES and can’t get passed Quater final. true its tough but thats not the excuse. lyon is in better financial position to keep quality players. as a fan of france and its clubs i’m waiting to see a club from that country lift CL, and only has that chance but they kep on selling their players, weakening themselves in process and making difficult to go further

gaston: My bad, but Lyon NEVER qualify for the uefa cup because we always get out of the CL groups. Comparing the uefa cup to the CL is silly.
Despite Lyon having money, it’s still located in France. Players want to play in more competitive leagues. Look at Coupet, Squillaci etc…This season alone. Manchester United have been dominant since the inception of the premiereship and only have 3 European cups, Barca only 2 in there rich history!

The fact is that… hmm… only one club can win the CL, each year.
So… ?Posted from
France

-

i see the two of you can’t see the point i’m trying to make, therefore any discussion with you guys is useless. becuase you try to find excuses for lyon (don’t blame you), you arguement is that because barca and MAN U, juve fail, so shall we.
and about history lyon has by now made name for itself, one of the most successful clubs in france, 7 times french champoins consecutively which is a french and european club record, the most consistent french team to qualify for in CL in the past 5 or more years
Posted from
United States

-

OK, Gaston.
But can you just tell me what club in Europe won the CL less than 7 years after his FIRST national title ?Don’t forget Lyon is still a young club, we have to wait.
Posted from
France

-

gaston: If they fail, that’s pretty much the way it goes. Those clubs have much more money.
The point you’re making about Lyon being thought a joke is plain nonsense and untrue. Do you think Man. United thought they were joke when they were one nil down till the last minute last season?
I’m not defending anything, I’m using logic. There are many great European clubs and the CL is a knockout competition, so it can happen easily.

Jo > Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa, too: before 1981, the last League title they won was in 1910.
Posted from
France

-

So that’s pretty much what I was saying
Posted from
France

-

domestic leagues existed before champoins league was set up, so thats irrelevent
second, Jo and Ush. you guys have and inferior mentality by adminting you are inferior, you will never get past the big clubs. you say lyon has little history or don’t have rich history, so when will they make one, if not now, then when ? the big clubs will use their superiority mentality over small clubs (and lyon is not small)
now here is why i say they are a joke in europe. in france they don’t strong competition, the clubs don’t have quality players because they are snatched by lyon or some other european club, as result the quality and competitivenss of the game diminshes. thats why a team that reached 2nd place one season may finish mid table the following season. because the talent is not there in other clubs, lyon will win.
lyon is like other french clubs, in the sense that their players after certain period of time get snatched by other european clubs, as result this gone talent that can make them reach further in CL diminshes as well. so does lyon derseve to be french champoins? yes. but because other clubs don’t have talent that lyon has
Posted from
United States

-

To answer your question then:
“so does lyon derseve to be french champoins? yes. but because other clubs don’t have talent that lyon has”
so does Man U deserve to be European Champions? yes. but because other clubs don’t have the talent that Man U has.
Posted from
Ireland

-

if you have no proper arguement, then i suggest you comment no further
and barca had the best talent, problems in the locker room was the downfall of that team
Posted from
United States

-

That’s a matter of your opinion, fact is Man. United won the champions league and there players didn’t come cheap!
Posted from
Ireland

Hey Gaston, lyon is actually making a rich history right now..they sell most of their new super talents every year, which is resulting a huge money gain..one day Lyon will be rich enough to keep the talents who is progressing trough their academies for several seasons, while they still have the money to buy established stars..
