Finally, Puel Has Arrived
By: John | June 19th, 2008
After several weeks of waiting, one of the least suspenseful signings of the summer has been realized. Former Lille LOSC and Monaco manager Claude Puel is officially the new manager of Lyon. The contract is said to be for 4 years and JMA has agreed to a compensation package with Lille for the manager’s signature.
Puel joins his former players Mathieu Bodmer, Kader Keita and Jean II Makoun. JMA described the signing of Puel as a further step in the “Evolution” of Lyon, and the club’s quest for continued domestic and especially European sucess. During the press conference, JMA spoke of Puel’s position as ” Entraineur Generale,” -apparently it was one of Puel’s preconditions- vs. that of “Entraineur.” Aulas was quoted as saying: “Il sera le patron.” “He will be the boss.” Aulas went on to say that this new role offered Puel wider powers and more space to operate than his predecessors. Do my eyes and ears deceive me? Among these wider powers at Puel’s disposal are full recruitment(of players) and “control” of the youth academy. Also, Puel said that he was happy with the current staff, so no change seems emminent. Puel is already bringing along his long-time assistant at Lille, Patrick Collot.
I can’t/won’t comment at length about Puel’s attributes- maybe some of you guys can. I know very little about him, and my observations are that he has maintained a mid-level club at the top of League 1 for several seasons and taken them to the CL. I’ve heard others comment on his vast tactical knowledge. Also, that he has the ability to maximize players’ potential and- most interestingly to me- the ability to cultivate a cohesiveness in squads and work with young players.
I would like to see Puel excercise this last ability should Hatem Ben Arfa decide to stay, and also find a way to satisfy our surfeit offensive players. Interestingly enough, Puel touched on this subject the day of his signing in an interview with L’Equipe. Puel spoke of the balancing act he would be performing: “We must find an equilibrium in the squad, especially since there are so many offensive players. In regards to the group dynamic, there must not be to many players.” I’m glad he will be focusing on defensive aquisitions from now on.
Asked if there where any players he did not want, Puel replied that he ” wasn’t in the habit of revealing names” and would be meeting with all players. He went on to say that the players need to to be instilled with a “Lyonnais Spirit and a desire to continue playing for Lyon.” Asked about Ben Arfa directly he responed: “The point shall be made to each one of them[the players], including Ben Arfa.” It will be interesting to see what this attitude and Puel’s new powers as “Entraineur Generale”bode for some players.
As the reporter in the L’Equipe interview pointed out: Puel’s predecessors lasted 3, 2, and 1 year respectively on the job. Hopefully Puel will not follow the trend and Lyon finally have the right captain at the helm of the ship.

I’m really glad to see Puel here. Aulas tried to get him after Le Guen left, then again after Houllier left. But Puel didn’t bite, for one because he felt Lille still needed him, and second, he didn’t want to be a puppet.
The first might still be the case but who knows, he built up a really competent structure at Lille, and it may be that Rudi Garcia will be able to continue what he started.
The second though, I think that’s what convinced him to sign. Previously, Lyon signed coaches to short two year contracts. It’s been a very long time since we’ve had a manager on a long contract. So Lyon mean business. I’m still a bit wary though, I don’t believe this means that Lyon will trust in him that much more. Puel will still have to deliver results – I don’t see Aulas giving him as much time as Seydoux did at Lille. Puel won’t have to win the Champions League next year, but he had better make progress, that being the key word. Because even if Aulas calls Perrin an “error” he too was signed to be the “engineer.” A double later, and he’s out. So Puel has a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

I am glad we keep a French coach. I don’t mean that Foreign managers are bad, not at all, but it is nice to keep a certain identity.
Also if we had brought in an established coach and that Lyon had won the Champions league, it would have been put on the coach only… I prefer baby steps than revolutions. Baby steps is what made Lyon what it is now: going from D2 to 7 times French champions.
Puel will feel confortable I think, especially with Bodmer, Keita and Makoun… I wonder if he will make some favoritism to his old Lille players.
as Jo said in the previous post, I think Puel will go for a 451. He will not want to leave Toulalan or Makoun out (Santos on the bench). I think that with those 3 DM, we are really perfect.
Just need 2 defenders and we’re all good (get rid of Anderson and Reveillere).
I hope to see this in midfield :
Toulalan Makoun
Keita Ederson Ben ArfaBut then again, it would leave Santos, Bodmer, Juninho, Pjanic and Govou out… this midfield is so well furnished!
Maybe Puel is also thinking of using a 4-1-4-1 which could transform into a 4-2-3-1 easily with Makoun
Toulalan
Keita-Bodmer-Ederson-Ben Arfa (Juninho, Govou, Pjanic, Makoun and Santos as subs). We definitely have a rich team problem… Puel may just as well split the players into two groups and play one group one match and the other the next.

Aulas said recently that his priority is to double every post with internationals. He’s already spent 45m, and I expect him to spend another 20m, which I think will be spent on two defenders. I don’t see anymore attackers unless Govou AND Ben Arfa leaves (a winger), or Fred leaves (a striker).

In 2010, it will be the year of the world cup, so it will be a bad thing to win champion League this year, our international players needing rest in order to win the WC. For me it will be this year or when the chickens will have teeth. There will have a lot of change on the transfers market for ours opponents this year, and at this moment none for us. We were eliminated by the champion (MU) but i think that with a more offensif spirit we could had beaten them. If we manage to keep Ben Arfa, our team had never been so stronger. I’m very optimistic for the next year.

I think Govou will leave, especially since Delgado will figure more this year, and even though Remy and Karaboue have both moved, Grenier will probably be in the first team. Our midfield is very well ‘furnished’, although its tough to say what the formation will be, as Puel is flexible. We must consider Kallstrom as being sold now as well, and I think that Makoun may end up as a backup to Bodmer but employed in more defensive schemes from time to time.
Its interesting to see if Ben Arfa stays on, I think he will. Mounier has a possible loan offer at Nice and Montpeiller, but he wont leave if Ben Arfa does. I agree that a 4th center back is needed, but with Puel moving to Lyon, does that mean Charvet does not go to Lille now? Also, a left back would be a priority, but I see a striker as being important, because Fred is flaky and probably will want to leave when the deadline comes closer. A promotion or a purchase? That remains to be seen…

MrCham: thanks for the comp. We need three defenders,if Toto leaves, and one striker if Fred leaves. Can Delgado step-into this role, or is he uneffective as a striker/CF?

Centre de Formation means youth academy.

Evilo: Thanks, don’t know how I made that mistake.

I just realized, now that Puel has control over the academy as well, what does that mean for George Prost, the guy currently in charge of the set up? Lesser power for Prost? Or is this just a figure of speech – how much control can Puel have over the academy anyway if he’s going to have his hands full with management and recruitment? Two totally different things, right?

Nah that means Puel will decide who to recruit for the academy and will make the decisions.
Of course the staff will work there full time but ultimately, their boss is not Aulas anymore, but Puel.Posted from
