Fiorentina vs. Lyon: Going to Florence Without an Arm…and a Leg
By: Inara | November 25th, 2008To recap the situation in Lyon’s Champions League group, Lyon and Bayern are level with eight points, with Lyon on top due to more goals scored. Fiorentina lie in third with three points, but at the moment, they have a better head to head record against Lyon. Steaua are fourth with only a single point and can only contend for a spot in the UEFA Cup. How things break down for Lyon is like this: They need to either win or draw today in order to qualify for the next round. To get top spot in the group, Lyon need to win or draw against Bayern (assumiing they beat Fiorentina as well).
Before this weekend, I thought that Lyon had a really decent chance of getting a win in Italy and at the very least, a draw, despite the fact that Lyon seem to suffer a curse when playing Italian teams. However, with the injuries piling up, I’m not very optimistic about anything. Fiorentina are difficult opponents, and they will be at home. They know they need a win if they are to have any chance of making it to the next round, and furthermore, they are still peeved over their last encounter with Lyon.

November 25, 2008
Stadio Artemio Franchi, Florence
2:45 PM ET (20:45 CET, 19:45 GMT)
Match background:
I wrote background information on Fiorentina here, so I won’t repeat any of that. Instead, I’ll get all of us up to speed on how they’ve been doing since our first encounter back in September.
Fiorentina are currently in 6th place, with seven wins, two draws, and four losses. In Serie A, they’ve scored 18 goals and have conceded 12. Their top two scorers are Alberto Gilardino with nine goals and Adrian Mutu with four goals. In the Champions League, they have scored only 3 goals and have conceded 6 (Gilardino and Mutu are their goalscorers).
Currently, Fiorentina are fortunate in their injuries. Only two players did not make the team sheet, Marco Donadel who is out with an injured ankle and Martin Jorgensen with an injured foot. Dario Danielli is declared fit after his bout of gastroenteritis. Daniel Osvaldo has recovered from his muscle strain and Per Kroldrup is fit after his ankle injury.
As I said before, Fiorentina must win if they are to have a chance of qualifying. But even if they win at Lyon, it doesn’t guarantee them anything because then they need to defeat Steaua Bucharest while simultaneously hoping that Bayern defeat Lyon. So things are complicated for them. But they are determined and have certainly accumulated more experience since their first encounter with Lyon.
Lyon are on top with eight points and a better goal differential than Lyon, but having played Steaua in their double header, they have Fiorentina and Bayern left, with those two teams each have games against Steaua (not that Steaua are easy, but that they are easier than the other teams in the group). In L1, they are in 1st place with ten wins, three draws, and two losses. They’ve scored 21 goals and conceded 10. In the CL, Lyon scored 10 goals and conceded 6.
Puel has said that he hopes to get at least a point from this encounter while Cesar Prandelli said that he wants all three points. I certainly hope this isn’t an indication of the level of motivation between the two coaches. Even with a depleted squad, Lyon should be demanding wins.
Lyon info:
Who isn’t injured? Lyon are missing Mathieu Bodmer, Francois Clerc, Miralem Pjanic, Fabio Santos, Cesar Delgado, and Anthony Reveillere for this trip.
Worse yet, Lamine Gassama and Fabio Grosso are waiting on last minute fitness tests.
Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Gassama, Kolodziejczak, Mensah, Cris, Grosso, Boumsong, Faure – Toulalan, Makoun, Källström, Ederson, Juninho – Piquionne, Fred, Benzema, Mounier, Keita, Govou.
To compensate, both Sebastien Faure and Timothee Kolodziejczak have been included in the group. It’s a pretty sad day when three of Lyon’s seven defenders are from the reserves.
Tactical lineup:
This section makes me cry. Really. I’m guessing it will be a 4-3-3. We can’t afford a more experimental 4-4-2 with a weakened squad. Though depending on how the game is progressing, Puel may opt to change things around later. However, no matter what lineup Puel chooses, it’ll be difficult because ALL players have been under performing recently. I can’t point to a single one that has been playing well (besides Jeremy Toulalan, who always plays well).
Lloris
Gassama – Cris – Boumsong – Grosso
Juninho – Toulalan – Makoun
Govou – Benzema – Ederson
That backline makes me weep. No choice about the CBs, but if Lamine Gassama can’t play, Sidney Govou might find himself back there, or perhaps even Jeremy Toulalan. Hell, Puel might put himself back there! If Fabio Grosso can’t play, then Timothee Kolodziejczak will be making his second professional appearance ever.
In midfield, no choice about Juninho and Jeremy Toulalan. I’d normally think that Jean II Makoun would be starting alongside of them, but he’s been invisible the last few weeks while Kim Kallstrom has been a lot better. But will Kallstrom and Toulalan be enough? It’ll be a judgment call by Puel.
Up front, Karim Benzema will start, the question is where. I just might slit my wrists if Puel starts Fred up top and Benzema on the left. Unfortunately, besides Benzema, the rest of Lyon’s offensive armada has been utter crap in recent weeks. Sidney Govou is a shadow of his former self since returning from injury, Kader Keita has been a shadow of his former self since coming from Lille. Ederson is the new “old” Cesar Delgado, and Anthony Mounier has hardly played since his emergence over a month back. Fred sucks and Frederic Piquionne has hardly played. At this point, I’d rather Benzema just play alone up front and put an extra player in the midfield and one in the defense (a 5-4-1?).
Viewing options:
Setanta will have this game on delayed broadcast at 7:30 PM tonight. That’s pretty damned useless. You can find streams here or buy a stable one from UEFA.com.
Expected results:
I have no idea, and I don’t want to jinx anything by guessing. So let’s just all hold hands and pray that Lyon come out of this encounter alive. Please, no more injuries. A win would also be very nice.

Were saved! At first i thought suspension for cris and Juni was a good thing cause then they can rest, but we’ll have to win the match against bayern too..put mensah in cb then it’s alright there, and ederson should take junis role. We will however miss his insane free kicks..i cant belive it..3 crossbars for us today, and 2 posts for viola..

That was SUCH an INCREDIBLE game !!!
The most beautiful I’ve see for a while. Because not only Lyon did well and win, but Fiorentina was excellent too.
I loved to watch it.Here are my rates :
Lloris : 7
Mensah : 6
Cris : 8
Boumsong : 7
Grosso : 7
Toulalan : 8
Makoun : 7
Juninho : 8
Keita : 7
Govou : 6
Benzema : 8We really see 2 different teams when we watch Ligue 1 Lyon’s games and CL Lyon’s games.
- The block was solid, Boumsong and Cris seems to be more and more complementary. They speak a lot to each other, and that goes better and better.
- Mensah did the job, but sometimes tended to let his right wing to go in the box (CB’s reflex !). And he never came apart Keita, what a RB usually did.
- Grosso impressed me so much in the first half ! He was everywhere, and everytime effective ! Even defensively ! Then we did not see him much, but he was there. Confident and solid. That was the World Cup Grosso.
- Toulalan. Toulalanesque. That word is enough. I’m starting falling in love with him. Sorry Inara.
- Makoun was very present in every duel, he went forward a lot, helped in counter attack, and scored. Very good game.
- Juninho had been sublime. Enormous. He’s like an omniscient guy, see everything on the pitch, always make the good pass, and 2 magic free kicks who hit the cross bar. You know what I’m talking about ! That’s OUR Juninho.
- I liked Keita. He tried a lot, sometimes failed, but was everytime where he had to. Excellent technician, he showed us what he’s capable of. He just (still) needs to take car of his passing. Too much waste. But tonight, he wasted less than usual.
- I do not agree with you about Govou. Sure, that was a difficult game for him, but he helped a lot Grosso in the defensive duties. He made good runs, and good passes. He also kicked to the goal, and he’s becoming slowly the Govou of last year.
- Benzema. One assist. One goal. A LOT of spaces created with good runs… Benzema is feared everywhere in Europe.I’m sad for Inara who could not see that fabulous game !
Now… let think about Valenciennes !

And Jo, yes. I’m guessing Inara is going to want to buy the delayed stream from UEFA to see this in all its glory.

That was an amazing game. Every second was entertaining – couldn’t take your eyes off it for a minute. Going forward we were sublime – creating opportunities constantly. However I was less impressed with the defence as I felt Fiorentina went very close to scoring too many times. I wasn’t watching closely enough to pinpoint the sources of error. Boumsong made a last gasp tackle in the last minute which was crucial and as good as a goal in a sense.
The crossbar was the most annoying thing! Lyon were a couple of inches away from 3 wonder goals. It’s so frustrating because if these had gone in, they’d have lived long in the memory and been remembered for years to come. Ederson’s shot reminded me a lot of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbTSkIJQvwg Van Persie goal against Charlton, and what else can I say that hasn’t been said about Juni’s free kicks – they’re just awe inspiring. There was a best free kicker taker in the world poll on goal.com which Juni only came 3rd in, with Del Piero somehow winning. I just don’t understand completely how. IMO Juni has to be the best free kick taker in the world. No one scores as regularly as he does, nor can anyone frighten goalkeepers from the kind of range that he does.
I’m not convinced by Keita as a player, I think he has quite poor technique and lacks a killer instinct – possibly this will come from more games. But from matches I’ve seen, I think he seems to be lacking the necessities to become a quality player. He did show signs of class, with a long ball that put Govou through towards the end of the match. I thought Govou had an efficient match and made a lot of good runs that worked the Fiorentina defence. As usual Benzema was brilliant. Singlehandedly at times going through the entire Fiorentina defence. His goal was also superb. Had it not been for one or two dodgy linesman calls and the crossbar Lyon could well have scored more. Huge huge huge achievement to go through to the knockout stages for the 6th year in a row, Lyon really are a formidable group stage team – lets hope they can take the big step up and become a formidable knock out team

Hearing from this, it sounds like I might do the same. Though there’s bound to be torrent lying around everywhere.
I wish I will be able to say the same for Bordeaux.

Yay Ronald!!
(Inara, I’m guessing you’ve seen this? I’m oddly excited but I also know it won’t happen since Inter will never win CL ever ever. But imagine that..50m and the
doubtful and unreliableservices of Adriano! And Benzema…Inter!)Posted from

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I JUST saw the score. I am sooooo happy. I haven’t seen the game or even highlights, so Ronald, if you find torrents, I’ll be grateful to you forever.
I see Juni and Cris got carded, I think it was deliberate because it’s better to miss the Bayern game than later in the next round. From what I understand, Lyon only need a draw to get top spot. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Wow I am just so thrilled, I can’t wait to see this game. It’s terrifc that Lyon got out of their doldrums for such an important match. I totally forgive for their previous lackluster month.
And thanks for the comments guy! Like I said, much more interest than reuters or skysports.

Jennifer, I can believe that Inter is interested in Benzema, but I don’t think Adriano will be part of the plans. His wages are too high, and he’s not the type of player that would appeal to Puel.
But what makes me even more incredulous is that Inter are prepared to offer 12m for Makoun. Which is funny because we got him for 15 just this past summer.

Felicitations a OL on a dominant performance away from home, there is no dishonour in losing to a team that can play like that.
Benzema increased his value to Italian teams by about 50% last night; the commentators were falling over themselves to use new superlatives. That said, I would take all of this week’s transfer rumours with the usual mountain or two of salt.

Ursus, Fiorentina did a really GOOD game yesterday.
That was close for you (as usual this year in CL for “La Viola”).
To me, Fiorentina really is a big team.Posted from

They played well, but not well enough.
It is a relatively young team, and one that is not at all used to the extra demands of a Champions League campaign (especially when faced with a group that includes such “usual suspects” as Bayern, OL and Steaua).
In several ways, they are rather similar to OL a few years ago.

Inara – as I understand Lyon need to win or have a goalless draw to go through top of the group. Anything less and Lyon will be second, as Lyon are currently top due to a better head to head record v Bayern, drawn from the away goal in Munich yet Bayern have a better goal difference. So if Bayern get a score draw then they’ll go through themselves I think.

Are we all aware that since the collapse of Lehman Brothers as part of the financial crisis, Lyon’s net worth has been halved due to it valuation on the French stock market? Not a good sign considering we will need to invest heaviily in the defense either this winter or this summer.
