Fred Interview

By: John | September 26th, 2008

One of my least favorite subjects- aside from ethnic cleansing, and life threatning diseases- is Lyon’s resident brat, Frederico Chaves Guedes Fred. Fred recently gave an interview in French on OL’s website. Since they didn’t offer an English translation- and annoyingly, OL doesn’t offer translations for alot of their articles- I thought I’d share a verbatim of the interview. Fred talks about his personal life and plans for his future, including his new found loyalty to OL.

Interviewer: How do you judge the start of your season?

Fred:I had a good game against Nice but against Fiorentina, my level of play dropped-off. It’s normal because previously I had spent four months resting, without playing due to injury. My season has begun. I’m very eager to score; maybe Saturday against Nancy.

Interviewer: Wednesday against Fiorentina, the OL supporters whistled at you during your exit from the pitch. What did you feel?

Fred:I felt the whistles, but that’s normal. It’s up to me to change that. I know once I start to score and do good things the people will be behind me. I understand the reaction of the fans after all that happened last season between the transfer rumors, my falsely rumored departure for Paris, and the declarations of the president who said that he wasn’t even sure that I was even injured. But I understand his intentions, I understand well. He didn’t say that with malice. I had two invasive surgeries. So I was sad to hear that.

Interviewer: Do you feel confident at the moment?

Fred: I have gone through difficult times both from a contractual point, as well as personal, and this has complicated my relations with the club. With OL, we have become angry and I have become exhausted with all these stories, but everything is fine now, and I think I will stay at Lyon(Fred’s contract expires this season). I want to score goals so that the club may offer me a new proposal. I’ve explained it to my brother, who looks after most of my interests, that my priority is OL. I will not talk to another club other than OL, even if another proposal is offered. My priority is to stay at OL.

Interviewer: Have you really been on the verge of leaving OL?

Fred: Yes. I divorced last year and my ex-wife took my daughter back to Brazil. So I told the president that I wanted to be loaned for six months or one year to a Brazilian club, so that I may be close to my daughter, but he preferred a permanent transfer. So I decided to stay at OL. For about four months, I didn’t feel like training or playing. Fortunately, my friends and family were with me. My little girl misses me, but I’m here to work. I play here for her, so that she may return to Europe after she has grown.

Interviewer: Have the negociations for a contract extension advanced?

Fred: After the game against Nice, the president told us that he would like us to organize a meeting with him. I hope that it will happen before January, so that all will be calm. Regardless, I have given my word to Bernard Lacombe and the president that I will not talk to any other clubs before having discussed the matter with OL.

Today’s L’Equipe ran an extended version of this in which Fred says in black and white that if he stays he Europe after this season he can ONLY see himself playing for OL. Of course being Fred he will change his mind many times but let’s hope JMA buys him a one way ticket back to Brazil in June.

I had already read this interview, and all I can say is that it is the firt time Fred seems honest to me.

Then again, he may just be saying that in order to gain some playing time before signing a free transfer with another team.

On a sporting value, I still believe Fred could fit in Lyon if he stopped believing he is a superstar. He has a very different playing style from Benzema but can be very effective. I will never forget his goals against Madrid and PSV.

I just wish he could keep his head down, work, and show to the fans what he can really do.

BTW John, the first sentence of your post : “One of my least favorite subjects- aside from ethnic cleansing, and life threatning diseases- is Lyon’s resident brat, Frederico Chaves Guedes Fred.” sounded just like Inara.

Don’t hate me, but I really like Fred. I think he is an exceptional talent and a natural goalscorer which could offer Lyon a lot if uninjured and 100% focused on his game. If I’m not mistaken, he was actually one of our best players in the second part of our last league campaign, scoring numerous goals in his parnership with Benzema. And to be honest, his goal celebration (and the goal!) in the game against PSV is one of my favourite football events of all time and this is when I started to really like the guy. Silly of me, right? :)

    @Samir: Dobrodošao! ;)

Fred was and can be truely amazing, but just how many chances can we afford to give this guy Now that he has to compete with Frederic Piquionne. I hope he can return to his old form, but i feel he has way way too much baggage at lyon.

Pride of Lyon: What do you mean it sounded exactly like Inara? If you mean it sounds like plaigarism, please let me know. I never heard Inara say anything that negative about Fred, nor did I think she dislikes him as much as I do. If you know specifically if she ever used those words about Fred or any other player, please let me know. I’ll retract what I wrote right away.

I used to be a Fred fan, but ever since his antics from last summer, when he skipped town during pre-season and didn’t show up until like a month after everyone else, and then started demanding a pay raise (!!!), I’ve had to step back and look at not just his skills (though we’ve seen little evidence of it these days), but his personality as well. I don’t like how he feels entitled to a place at Lyon, that he’s doing the club a favor by sticking around. So while I don’t doubt he could be a great player if he put his mind to it, I don’t believe he’ll ever make the step to becoming a great player because of his nonexistent work ethic.

Honestly, Fred makes Ben Arfa look like Gandhi sometimes.

Samir: we haven’t played Bayern yet. And I think it’s quite possible that Lyon will only get a scoreless draw against Nancy this weekend. Home game or not, Bayern is what will be on everyone’s minds, no matter what Puel says.

Also, I’m pretty sure PoL wasn’t accusing you of plagiarism (because I’ve actually never said anything remotely clever regarding Fred before), but more like, great obsessed minds think alike?

John, I didn’t mean it in a plagiarism way! Sorry, if my remark disturbed you! It is just that Inara often compares things as you did in the first sentence, and as you now share this blog, I first thought Inara had written this post. so I was just surprised to see you were the author.
Since you co-write this blog, I think you have improved a lot your way of presenting things, and I take a lot of pleasure in reading your thoughts.

Hope you will understand what I mean (all very very positive things!).

As for Fred, I already wrote a few months ago that until february I still rated him a better striker than Benzema. Fred can play really well as long as he has great passers. Benzema can create his own goals, Fred needs an assist (in most cases). But I think that when he is in shape, he is a deadly weapon and very realist in front of the goal.
