Friendly: FK Partizan vs. Lyon Liveblog

By: Inara | July 23rd, 2008

I know it’s just a friendly, but it’ll be interesting to see the internationals back in action, except this time, some of our new signings and our youth will be in the mix as well. This match is also a big one for Partizan, who will be receiving their league trophy for the 2007-2008 season. Reader Nicolas will be at the match, so hopefully he’ll have lots of eye witness details for us.

This match is being held in Belgrade, Serbia. Start time is 20:00 CET, 2 PM Eastern Time. And yes, there are streaming links. Well, only two, but that’s better than nothing, right?

Keep refreshing for updates. It’s just a friendly, so I’m not going to be super intense here.

PARTIZAN 1 - 3 LYON

It might not have been the most interesting of matches, but it was still fun to watch, if only to see the new system and the new players adjust. But it’s still obvious that the players aren’t anywhere close to peak form. I saw a lot of laziness as well as a refusal to follow through on some balls. I’m sure Puel will take care of that. Pjanic, Delgado, Toulalan, and Lloris can walk away confident that they had a good game. The others need more conditioning. Benzema looked good but is still in vacation mode as well.

Also, Toulalan did get a yellow card in this game. The only one. He’s so predictable.

93:00: Game over.

92:00: Partizan doing their best to get one more goal in.

89:50: Clerc’s backheel goes directly to a Partizan keeper. Please don’t do fancy tricks within in your own penalty area. Thanks.

88:30: Grenier headed in a beautiful ball, but the Partizan keeper got a hand to it, barely.

88:00: Last substitution. Delgado out, Valdivia in.

84:00: Clerc has a pretty shot on goal, but it’s saved.

83:00: Another thing about the kids is because they are used to playing with each other, there is less hesitation between them.

82:00: Tafer scores, but it’s ruled offside. Barely.

80:00: Things are looking more disorganized for Lyon, but the younger players are making up for it in terms of intensity.

77:00: More substitutions. Pjanic out, Tafer in. Makoun out, Mehamha in. Toulalan out, Beynie in.

75:00: I hope you guys now understand why I was so insistent on Lloris coming to Lyon. He’s fearless.

73:00: Grenier is offside. Ten seconds later, he was in a great position but lost his composure.

71:00: I’m liking Delgado a lot. He’s less like Malouda and Govou in that he won’t directly engage players, and more like Ben Arfa in that he prefers to avoid them by either tricking or running past them.

68:00: Substitutions. Grenier in, Benzema out. Pied in, Govou out.

64:00: GOALLL. Benzema scores thanks to Pjanic.

63:00: Every other player looks like they just came back from vacation, but Toulalan is perfect as usual.

57:00: Lyon are giving the ball away a lot. Partizan players are able to slip through despite both Toulalan and Makoun being on the pitch.

51:00: WTF was that, Cris? He tried to clear it but instead put the ball back into the box at the feet of a Partizan player, who took a shot (which Lloris saved).

50:00: Things are slow at the moment. You can tell that the players are treating this game as exactly what it is: a friendly. I miss the intensity of competitive games.

46:00: No changes to the lineup.

HALFTIME: Lyon might be in the lead, but this game is far from over. Partizan were initially a little star struck, but as the game got on, they’ve been growing more in confidence, especially with all those supporters behind them, who went crazy at the Partizan goal. We’ll see what Puel whips up in the second half.

For me, the best players in this half were Lloris and Pjanic, and perhaps Toulalan as well. Lloris has been making tons of saves, it’s just too bad that he always ends up conceding (his tally is three in both games he’s played so far). Pjanic is playing with a maturity way beyond his years. He’s creating and taking his chances and not at all suffering from the typical new kid caution. Toulalan is doing most of the sweeping in midfield. I’m not sure what Makoun has been doing besides fouling Partizan players though.

42:00: Some nice build up play from Lyon, with a clever nutmeg from Govou. His shot is deflected out by a defender, so Lyon get a corner, but nothing happens from it.

39:00: Partizan get a free kick in Lyon’s half. It goes in the box, and another Partizan player heads it just barely over the crossbar.

38:00: Partizan score their first goal, thanks to some confusion at the back. Lloris couldn’t do much.

32:00: Makoun is fouling people a little too enthusiastically.

30:00: The match has a nice pace to it now, though you can definitely tell that the players are still somewhat unfamiliar with not only each other but the lineup. But I’m pleased at the complicity between Pjanic and Benzema.

25:00: My computer went all funky on me, and I had to restart. By the time I got back to the game, Lyon had scored TWO goals. The first one, at 16:00, was almost entirely due to Benzema, who faked the defender and keeper. His shot was deflected in by a Partizan player, so technically it’s an own goal. The second goal, at 22:00, was from a Clerc cross, which Govou shot past the keeper.

12:00: Makoun concedes a free kick in a dangerous area. Lloris sets up his first ever Lyon wall. The Partizan player’s free kick is just a bit too high.

10:30: Govou’s shot goes nowhere, as usual.

10:00: Are Lyon purposely trying to lose possession?

7:30: Pjanic took the worst corner kick ever. Benzema then has a shot on goal, but it was too high.

5:30: Partizan had a shot on goal, but Lloris saved it. I’m a little troubled by how the Partizan attacker got through. Toulalan I see hasn’t lost his touch. I have a feeling he’ll be carded in this match.

3:00: Not much is happening. Mostly the ball is going from one end to another. Pjanic is pretty involved though, which is nice to see.

Kickoff: It’s so good to have Toule and Benzema back. That is all.

Pre-match: Is it bad that I recognize the voices of the OLTV commentators? Also, I’m hearing “We are the Champions” in the background. Excellent. Player handshakes. Lyon are in their white kits. Cris is captain. And Lloris looks good in a Lyon kit.

Pre-match: Partizan’s trophy presentation is going on right now. They’re having a lot of fun, streamers and balloons everywhere.

Here is the lineup:

Lloris
Clerc - Cris - Boumsong - Grosso
Toulalan - Makoun
Pjanic
Govou - Benzema - Delgado

Bench: Hartock, Seguin, Faure, Gassama, Valdivia, Mehamha, Grenier, Beynié, Tafer, Pied

good to see Benzema didn’t lose any form…I like the idea of two Defensive mids, it allows one of them to go forward and use their passing a little more effectively.

Sorry I disappeared after the match, but immedietely after it was over, I took a four hour nap. The game was a tiring one, I guess.

Anyway, I don’t think I’ll do a post reviewing the game since the liveblog pretty much tells you what I thought about it, but here are some notes:

First, I liked the formation, which was a 4-2-3-1, with Benzema up front, Makoun, Pjanic right behind him, Govou and Delgado on the sides, and Makoun and Toulalan behind them. It still needs a lot of work though. But I thought Benzema got the ball a lot more - it really helped him to have Pjanic behind him. Normally Benzema has to do a lot of tracking back himself. Benzema wasn’t firing on all cylinders today, but it’s obvious he hasn’t lost his touch, and today was a good indication that next season will be confirmation of what he achieved last season.

Delgado started off the match slowly, but the more he played, the better he got. He’s a very typical South American winger though - I don’t see much defensive contributions from him in the future, but unlike Ben Arfa, Delgado passes the ball.

Govou…he’s like Juninho in the sense that he can be invisible for most of the match, but then he’ll suddenly score or fake out five defenders. Also, did you guys see Govou’s latest outburst when asked if he’d stay at the club?

Pjanic was really good tonight, and I’m just loving the ease he has with Benzema on the pitch. I can’t believe he’s just 18 years old, but he might be earning himself a staring position.

Toulalan was great, great, great. It’s like he hasn’t been gone at all. He was the also the fittest player on the pitch.

About Makoun…I didn’t think he had a great match, but some French media disagree. I guess I’ll have to rewatch it. He and Toulalan looked awkward together, probably because they don’t know how to play together just yet. But having two DMs on the pitch is not a bad idea when played correctly (that is, not the Domenech way).

For me, the back line was confused today. Clerc and Grosso were okay, they held down their ends pretty well but didn’t do as much attacking. Cris and Boumsong made some mistakes, but I’m going to write that off as pre-season nonsense. Most of Partizan’s attacks came when the central defense was split into two.

Lloris also had a good game. He made a lot of saves (which is sad because technically, Partizan shouldn’t be having those opportunities), so at least his confidence is building. He let in a goal, but it wasn’t really his fault, though he might have lost his concentration for a second of two.

So that’s it about the players. One more thing though. This match was played with essentially half of Lyon’s senior team. The other half will be playing at Nancy tommorrow. I’m starting to get really worried how Puel is going to manage this workforce, especially the midfield, which is ridiculously crowded. If for example he decides he likes the look of today’s midfield, that means that Juninho, Kallstrom, Ederson, Bodmer, and Fabio Santos will be on the bench (as well as youth players like Grenier, Mehamha, Valdivia, and Beynie).

I agree with you Inara about potential problems for managing the midfield workforce. There are simply too many players there at the moment, surely Kallstrom is going to be offloaded, nor can I see Fabio Santos getting many games either. I would expect Juninho to be put into the starting lineup. I would also expect Bodmer, Kader Keita and Makoun to be starting a lot of matches due to his knowledge of these players - he’ll know how to get the best out of everyone. It really looks as if Puel has an impossible job in keeping everyone happy with the current squad being as it is.

Another possible issue that’s going to be interesting to see is how Puel uses Fred. It was clear last season that Perrin felt obliged to use him in someways to keep him happy - even if it wasn’t for the best of the team. I’d expect Benzema to be used as a lone striker, which will surely cause problems as Fred has such a huge ego and will not be willing to accept sitting on the bench. Also will be interesting to see if Baros or Tafer get any games, surely at the moment Tafer should be preferred ahead of Baros on current form.

At the moment I’m awestruck at the size of Lyon’s squad and how it’s going to be managed. I think if Puel is clever enough to use it wisely then Lyon will be formidable as Chelsea have been in previous seasons - they’ve had such depth in the squad that they’ve been able to put out two separate teams between league and cup matches which ensures no players suffer from burn out, as well as having great quality to choose from in case of any injury problems. Puel’s major task is going to have to be rotating the squad to make sure everyone is suitably happy.

don’t ask me why but i get the impression that puel will be better at conveying a sense that a big squad is needed to the players than previous coaches. players in the premiere league are used to competition for playing time but generally in france the good players expect to play and if they dont they get restless. puel needs to drive home “of course you wont play as much, you’re playing for lyon!” kind of attitude that will shut the divas up.

There might have been, but my grasp of French is very limited, so if there was, I missed it. I did read somewhere that Pjanic had a tough time with some of the chants (I don’t know if it was racial or not). Perhaps Nicolas, who was at the match, could clarify.

Inara: thanks for the great liveblog, and for the pictures (but it looks like we need a password to access them?)

One thing that strikes me is how easily Benzema adapts to other players: his association with HBA saved us many times last year in the first half of the season, he was getting along well with Fred on the pitch, he had an instantaneous complicity (on and off the pitch)with Ribery in the French national team, and now he immediately combines with Pjanic.
Talent aside, this is something I really value in a player; so, added to Karim’s amazing skills, it makes a hell of an asset for a team.

Well, it looks like I have a lot of explaining to do. Here we go… :)

First of all, the game was played in almost unbeleivable circumstances with heavy rain and extremely cold weather pretty much untypical for summer nights here - all the supporters were frozen at the end of the game, and I have a feeling that it also affected the game a lot. Not that the players aren’t used to the rain, but the terrain was extremely slippery and play was pretty much dameged because of it - even Lloris had much troubles with the ball. It’s a pitty, really, that the damn rain started just at the start of the game.

The game wasn’t very interesting to watch, but there were some very good moves and my joy of watching Lyon couldn’t be tarnished even if they sat down and played poker instead of playing. Anyway, both teams made many mistakes and played rather disorganised, but the quality of Lyon players prevailed in the end. Lloris seemed very good, defense didn’t look very relailable, but physically very dominant, midfield was very solid thanks to Toulalan, perhaps the best Lyon player on the night, and the attacking trio, while they haven’t played as good as they should, managed to score goals. Pjanić was phenomenal for his age, one can only wonder what kind of a player he is going to be and how powerful his parnership with Benzema can become. Delgado also surprised me in a good way, he wasn’t spectacular but played very well, while the youngsters also had their chance to shine. All in all, a good impression by OL, especially when you look at the fact that half of the team hadn’t played since the Euros. The weak spot seems to be the defence (surprised, anyone?), but I guess that with the arrival of Mensah and with some more games to play in the pre-season, the back-line will be pretty damn strong, probably stronger than the one with Squillaci. The white kits are also very very nice, I don’t know why but they look much better now than in the previous seasons (perhaps because now I’ve seen them live?), and yes, I’m definetely satisfied with what I’ve seen last night. And yes, there was also a moment to remember - when Benzema got substituted, he was walking by the stands with his head down, but just as he came to the parts of the stands I was in, he looked at the crowd close to him and shown his thumbs up. All of a sudden, all of us in front of him applauded like crazy, it was rather unexpected after his two goals and the general lack of applause before that, even to the Partizan players! Who would’ve thought that a 20 years old boy would be so respected? It really looked astonishing.

About the fans chanting, well, it’s really complicated to explain, and it’s also very disgraceful. First of all, I assure you it doesen’t have anything to do with Lyon or with Miralem Pjanić, but with some political issues that are pretty ‘hot’ at the moment. Secondly, only the south stand (the stand of fiery Partizan supporters, mostly organized groups) actually participated in this ‘event’. Serbian fans have a long history of bringing politics to the stadiums, and when I say politics, I mean the present political issues that the fans chant about regardless of the opponent. And no, it’s not a choice of the fans themselves. The thing is, organized football fans in Serbia, esspecially those of our two big clubs, Partizan and Red Star, are very connected with political parties and some political interests in the country. Leaders of the supporter groups are almost all given instructions what and when to sing, what and when to do, even outside the football world (attacks on the American embassy in march come to my mind). Ten years ago, they sang about the downfall of Milošević (and even hepled depose him), today they sing it about president Boris Tadić, and because of the arrest of Radovan Karadžić, it could actually be expected they would bring the subject to the stands. But this was really unbeleivable, 95% of chanting by the south stand (the only stand that actually did sing anything at all) didn’t have anything to do with their club or the match taking place, it actually looked like a far-right political assembly! They sang about Karadžić, downfall of president Tadić, called for violence and revenge if general Mladić also gets arrested, and even burned the flags of Democratic and Liberal-Democratic parties! The whole event was so disgraceful, that all the people I know that were on the south stand were very ashamed for being part of this whole madness. However, this it totally a local political issue, there were no riots, there were no fights, there were just songs, and not a single word of the supporters was directed at Lyon or at any of it’s players. The same south stand actually applauded Karim Benzema as he was passing by after his substitution! The only player that probably had a very tough time was Miralem Pjanić, who is Bosnian Muslim, and who could feel pretty much affected by the chanting, often directed against his own people. But I assure you once again that that almost none of the supporters acually knew Lyon has a Bosnian in their lines, and everything that has been sang last night is typical for our ‘fans’. So, the whole affair is local, it is our own disgrace that needs to be taken care of if we want to save our football from total dissolution. There are fewer and fewer supporters in football games year after year (some 3000 regularily visit the 55.000 seats Red Star stadium, for example), those idiots in the stands make normal supporters avoid football stadiums at all costs and trust me that there is a general consensus here in Serbia that those so-called fans, a minority by all means, are a disgrace to the whole nation. I’m just sorry you guys had to hear so much about it and read reports on racism and probably many other false information. Like I said, all of this was not Lyon-related, all you have to do is to be satisfied that in your countries you can attend games without being forced to witness such a disgrace and moral downfall of your own people (even if it is a minority of it), and also to live your whole life tagged as a barbarian in the eyes of the whole civilised world because of some idiots that regularily keep making you look as such. Sorry for this long post, I guess I’m really pissed off because of this, and so is everyone sane that was there last night. All in all, it’s nothing you should worry about, I’m just sad for Pjanić, and also very happy he had a good game despite all of this. I’m once again sorry because of the lenght of this post, and if you’ve still read it, thank you for your time! :)

Thanks, Nicolas! I really appreciated the first hand account.

    1. That’s awesome how Benzema’s reputation is growing. I didn’t expect he’d get much recognition at Belgrade, but he did. Very cool.

    2. So you think the kits look better in person? I’ve heard that from a few other people as well. I guess the camera makes them seem worse than they are.

    3. It’s a shame about the political supporters because they can sour an otherwise fun affair that you’d bring your family too. But France and Italy have those same problems, perhaps not necessarily political, but some fanatic ultra groups can make things very unpleasant by violence. I really appreciate that you took the trouble to clear it up for us - reports were sketchy, so all manner of speculation has been going around.

I’m glad you had a good time! I have yet to see Lyon play live, so I am very envious. :)

I can’t believe that photo with the Karadžić flag and the fascist salutes. I hope the EU starts putting some more pressure on Serbia now to get all of their criminals into the Hague and that their supporters can stop mixing football and politics.

On another note, vive la rentrée! Lyon’s midfield is getting me very excited for august. I think those odds on the next post might have to be revised if PSG get a striker.
