Stade De L’Escale d’Arnas, Arnas
1:00 PM EST(19:00CET, 18:00GMT)

Today, OL are in RhĂ´ne-Alpes to take on RC Lens. Lens is gearing-up for a return to first division football after last year’s soujourn in L2 purgatory.

Last week was the first action of the summer against Nice, in which Ederson had a fine first half, playing in the hole, were we finally got to see him play in position. And he seemed to flourish in the role, scoring in the 9th minute and missing another left- footed shot at the 28th. Our new hitman Lisandro Lopez, won’t make see any action, but our new, sizzling winger Michel Bastos is in the squad, so that should be fun too watch.

By the way, don’t forget, the entire summer schedule is here in this prior post.

Le Groupe: Keepers: Lloris, Vercoutre; Defenders: Bodmer, Boumsong, Clerc, Cris, Kolodzieczak, Réveillère, Seguin; Midfield: Ederson, Källström, Pjanic, Makoun,Toulalan; Forwards : Bastos, Govou, Mounier, Piquionne, Tafer

Out: Lopez, Delgado, Mensah, Grosso.

Please post any links ASAP.

P.S. My Friend Javier is now running the Lens blog, so make sure to stop by and welcome Les Sang et Or back to L1 and check-out the site often.

Probably the 8.I dont really think that we will sign exact Gameiro or Bobo but a player similar to them would be good.Maybe,Aulas wont sign anyone but with Piqe as 2nd striker,SAD. :(
But now we have Lopez,Bastos and Cissokho,we are so good now man.I cant imagine if we sign another CB how good we would be. :D
Someone like Kolodin,Ignashevich,Gamberini,Hangeland. The only question is who is available and who Lyon really want. What do you guys think about this players?Who is th most realistic signing?

If Milan have pulled away from Fabiano, OL should make a bid.

Fabiano on the outside looks a good deal-seeing as we are ready to invest a similar amount on Gignac, but for me Fabiano wouldnt come here, and I dont think we need a striker of his quality, some like Mbokani,Bobo,Pogrebnyak is better for us as they wont be gobsmacked if we change formations and they are dropped-Fabiano defo would.

Yeah, I’m sure he wouldn’t come, but it’s worth a try for that price. But I imagine both Remy/ Gignac wouldn’t sit on the bench either. I think one thing is for sure, if either of those two come, especially Gignac, we will have to play a 4-4-2 if Lisandro’s on the field/to start the match-assuming both are healthy that is. There’s just no way you pay that much cash to bring in the top scorer in the league and sit him, nor ever put Lisandro on the bench unless they are injured/being rested. And if Remy’s on the field in anything other than a 4-4-2, again with Lisandro on the pitch, that means we’ll have to sit Govou/Makoun/Ederson/Bastos. I think we only need one of the two, and that’s most probably what will happen. I was think of the couple of positives of spending all this money, and the one that I like the most is that maybe this group of players will probably be around for while, unless someone is disgruntled, because it might be a while before anyone pays their purchase prices much less the club make substantial profit on them. So hopefully we’ll see this unit together for a while, and with the addition of some CB’s in the future, get back to being scary-ass club.

Yeah, I think it was worth the money for Cissokho, just to make Milan look so petty. Lot’s of people are talking about it, and Lyon’s name is getting thrown around alot. I think Sam mentioned that and it’s true. The purchase is great PR as well as Lyon getting a good player. But getting Fabiano would really be the icing-on-the-cake.

i dont care much for what name it gives Lyon or how it makes milan look, Fabiano is class, better than Lisandro even, and if a miracle happens and he agrees to move to L1 and play for us we’ll have a scary team.

With one class striker we’ll have one of the best teams in europe. what would make a team like Liverpool better than us? or Arsenal, inter, Milan, Juventus? The winning mentaly? I think we’re gna be a power upcoming season.

we’ll don’t forget its all on paper, there are so many factors beyond the players talent, but i agree the potential of this years squad is huge.

Yeah John, I was talking about the PR of the Cissokho signing – it’s great to see so many people talk positively about OL!

Aleksander – I think we’re missing a good defence which is what makes us worse than those above teams really – Cris and Boumsong just doesn’t compare with Carragher and Skrtel for example.

I really hope we’ll be an upcoming power this season and the team on paper would seem to indicate it – but I’m still cautious about our qualities until I actually see the team gel well as a unit, there are definite question marks over Puel that will only go if the team starts to perform. Let’s face it the team was outright pathetic at times last season and performed far under its potential which is a very worrying sign IMO. What’s to say he will get the best out of a slightly different batch of players? I guess in his favour you could reference the performances of Makoun who he brought in from Lille and expect the same level of high performance to come from Bastos. It would be tragic if Bastos turned out to be like Keita as the guy has so much quality and it looks as though everything is in place for him to be a great success.

Of the three serious title contenders, Lyon inspires the least confidence in defense. OM and Bordeaux seem to have a more solid back four.

Then again, Lyon ended the last season with the second best defense (after Toulouse, oddly enough) despite so many injuries. So who knows really.

Also, Lyon have another 23m to spend, according to Aulas. Just enough to bring in a striker and another defender. I think the last TWO seasons are more than enough proof that you can never have enough CBs.

I really don’t agree with your opinion about the CB. Cris was so-so last season, and he even recog nized it, but I do believe the “policier” is still in him. His interview a couple of weeks ago made me feel very confident about him.
Lyon has been the one of the best defenses in the league for the past years (always 1st, 2nd or 3rd). If Puel changes into a 4-4-2 (which I hope he does), the defense will be under more pressue, but that is when we will see what it is really worth.
If he sticks to a 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 / 4-2-1-2-1 (whcih I hope he doesn’t), there is no need to worry. Toulalan and Makoun will annihilate most attacks.

I want a striker experienced in CL.

I dont really believe that Arsenal will pay 20mil for Gignac.I think they will buy someone like Chamakh or Martins for less money but we could buy him if Toulouse would accept a fee of 20mil.

The problem with Lyon’s defense is not the number of goals they concede – they rarely concede more than one or two goals, but how they concede them. Most of the time, it’s not due to the overwhelming superiority of the other team’s attackers but due to silly mistakes by our own defense. The only reason that Lyon don’t concede more goals is because of the tireless efforts of players like Toulalan, who do the work of an additional defender.

And while Cris and Boumsong – on their good days – are awe-inspiring, those days were few and far between last season. I haven’t seen enough of Mensah to comment, and Bodmer hasn’t played there consistently for me to get a good reading.

I don’t know how realistic it is to expect Lyon to be serious Champions League contenders with the players we have. I love Cris to death, and I’d love to see him return to his policeman form, but at his age, it’s hard to recover from such a serious knee injury, not just physically but psychologically.

yer anyone who says the defence is good is very weird IMO.POL your saying basically try out the defence in a 4-4-2 if it works great,if it doesnt we are completely fucked-with 23mill,13mill on a striker and 10 on a defender. A defender is paramount.

I agree that Cris is probably done, and unfortunately it may take half a season of errors and possibly shuffling different CB combinations to see what works, if anything at all. The problem is that Bodmer can’t play at the high levels of the CL and relying on Mensah to be healthy is like, well, you know… So unfortunately this is a problem that will be adressed next summer at the earliest IMO, unless the CBs are plagued by injuries before he winter window.

Well, I mark your words “Cris is done”. I am convinced he will be back to CL level very soon.

If we don’t play Cris, we have no more leaders apart from Govou. Cris is a must. Boumsong has been vwery good last year and deserves a starting position. If we lose or don’t play Cris, the team will have little fighting spirit.
