From Nikhil, our new blogger: PSG vs. Lyon: All Hopes Lead To Paris!
By: Megame | April 17th, 2011PSG – Lyon certainly is a crucial game, but even more important to this blogging community is the arrival of a long time follower and contributor of the Lyon Offside, Nikhil Apte, who kindly accepted (OK, I may have held him briefly at gun point) to help me with posting. So please welcome him, especially as a PSG-OL preview is not the easiest task for a blogging debut..

PSG vs. Lyon: All Hopes Lead To Paris!

Week 31 for Lyon kicks off in a few hours, and with just 24 points to play for in the remainder of Le Championnat, obtaining maximum points needs to be the only agenda the team has in Paris this Sunday evening.
Not the title, not the Champions League spot, not even what’s for dinner.
The Competition
With Rennais peering over its shoulder, OL finds itself in the now-familiar situation of having to fight to the finish. And without a doubt, it requires every bit of effort it can muster in Paris tonight. No doubt, SRFC’s failure to win on Saturday puts Lyon in a good position. That of not slipping from 3rd place, this week at least.
Lille went head-on against Bordeaux last night, and managed a solitary point. Losing steam are we?
A win against PSG accompanied by any non-victorious Marseille result shall take OL to the second spot, within just 3 points of League leaders Lille.
A Sour Grape Called History.
History hasn’t been kind to Lyon of late. They have not travelled well – with 5 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses and a measly goal difference of +3 to show for their 14 Away league games this season. To make matters worse, conceding first in an Away match seems to drain away even the best of spirits of the squad. Lyon have lost 4 times out of 9 such instances while winning just twice, perhaps indicating that more work needs to be done in the temperament department.
As PSG, this season, has been a team to score as many as 17 times in the first 30 minutes of their games, CHARGE!-but-with-bulletproof-shorts should be the theme of the game for OL.
PSG are in no mood for fun on the pitch, however. Their current position in the League table (5th, just 4 behind Lyon with 49 points) is largely because of their consistent rather than spectacular performances till the end of February. Victory against Caen last weekend was more an exception to their recent form, than being an example of it.
W – D – L – D – D perhaps adequately summing the recent woes of Paris Saint-Germain.
Who’s in the Line-ups and who’s knitting sweaters on the bench?
PSG Goalkeeper Apoula Edel, on Wednesday, was interrogated by the police for six straight hours on charges of falsification of identity made by his former agent. It is possible that he doesn’t make the cut, as he might have swapped gloves with handcuffs for the moment. Luyindula is expected to be sidelined following a knee injury. Nene shall in the line-up, and being PSG’s top scorer this season, is bound to be a threat. Perhaps more so because he is yet to register a strike in 2011, but has provided 4 assists this year already.
Lyon should take courage from Lisandro’s fantastic come-back from injury. The Argentine has been emphatically stomping his presence on the ground to strike 6 times in the last 5 league games.
Gomis has been declared fit to play again (Oh, how we need him to strike another from an offside position again this year) , while Pape Diakhaté returns to the squad after a suspension following the OGC Nice double-yellow card. A little birdie tells us that Diakhaté now gets nightmares of being included in the playing eleven once again, and then again, and then again for the entire season and then the next. But it is said that he only joins the millions that share the nightmare about him by now.
Bastos remains injured, as does Lacazette, after injuring himself on Wednesday against a CFA team (thanks, Megame!). César ‘Chelito’ Delgado appears to be fit again, with rumours that he has finally discovered his kryptonite. “Water”.
More shockingly, Pjanic was served a two-match suspension on Thursday (for real!) following a review of a challenge made by him on Rennais’ Montano.
Puel has admitted at the press conference on Friday that he may go ahead with a Toulalan – Lovren pair again at Centre back in this match. (Someone in the management definitely seems to be reading this blog AND comments!) Though if he’s taking the ‘regular’ players out of the squad for a spanking, with the injury situation in the team, there are few options on the bench.
Probable Line-ups :
Paris Saint-Germain : Coupet – Ceara, Armand, Sakho, Tiéné – Chantôme, Makelele – Giuly, Bodmer, Nene – Hoarau.
Lyon : Lloris – Réveillère, Toulalan, Lovren, Cissokho – Gourcuff, Gonalons, Källström, – Briand, Lisandro – Gomis
Allez OL!
