Govou: Juninho’s Ego To Blame
By: Inara | June 8th, 2007Gerard Houllier’s departure hasn’t stemmed the bitterness amongst the players.
The latest to air the club’s dirty laundry is Sidney Govou. In an interview for Lyon Mag, Govou blasted Juninho and his super big ego, which has no place in the “one-for-all” environment that is Lyon.
Juninho and Govou have been present in all six of Lyon’s title-winning campaigns.
Here are some excerpts from the interview:
“The club had difficulties managing the egos. There were many relationship problems in the team,” he said. “The worst was concerning Juninho. From the beginning of the season Gerard Houllier (the coach) and Jean-Michel Aulas (the president) decided to proclaim Juninho as the star of the team. Personally I didn’t care but that posed many problems for some of the team’s main players.”
“In the end we understood that there was him and the rest. That ended up damaging what had made Lyon strong over so many years: group unity.”
“We all saw that he was more nervous and he started to berate us on the pitch. The other players stopped listening to Juninho.”
Sadly, this entirely believable. Juninho is Lyon’s iconic player. So he does get a fair amount of “star” status, or at least the handicapped version of it in France. When the team plays well, he gets most of the credit. But when they play poorly, it’s also his fault.
During Lyon’s crap streak, Juninho’s increasing stress was evident on the pitch, especially in how frequently he lost his temper with not only opposing teams but his own teammates. This season he received 11 yellow cards and the second red card of his entire career (picture on the left).
Then there was his confrontation with Houllier over the arrival of Baros, and rumors that he wouldn’t extend his contract unless Houllier left (to no one’s surprise, he signed a contract extension 24 hours before Houller announced his departure).
And let’s not forget his morbid comments after the loss to Roma in the CL (which ended Lyon’s 27 game unbeaten streak at home) and the loss to Bordeaux in the Coupe de la Ligue.
Don’t get me wrong. Juninho’s heart bleeds for OL, and he has displayed a kind of loyalty to his team that has grown quite rare in Europe. But he’s also human, and he possesses quite a bit of power amongst his teammates and with the management.
But you know what’s really depressing? The fact that the players are going public with internal discord. That is the biggest sign that something is seriously wrong with the club. Lyon have suffered crises before, but back then, players always took care to be unified in public.
Let’s hope that this summer will see a rebirth of that team solidarity that Lyon is so famous for.

I dont like the dirty laundry being aired in public yet…Govou is right, Juninho has to much power in a club that promotes a togetherness atmosphere for all the players. Diarra has this same attitude which I dont like, and I dont think he will come around so he is on his way out. Juninho must realize he has probably 2 good years left, but even now he is past his best, and he will need the team to make him look great. If Juninho is the root of the problems in the dressing room, then for the collective good he is either chopped down or gotten rid of. Anyone can beat Lyons collecion of individual playes, but very rarely can someone beat Lyon as a unified team.

It seems that the interview published in LyonMag are lies according to olweb.fr and that Sydney admitted that he had never said that.

I saw that too.
Hmm.
You know, I still can’t completely disregard the interview. Govou and Juninho have gotten into spats this year, and what Govou said in his “alleged” interview about egos was obvious to any who watched Lyon post January.
Perhaps Lyon Mag published Govou’s unofficial, off the record comments? Or something equally as crazy because I am reluctant to brush aside the truth in this “fabricated” interview.

Libel issues being what they are in France (Voici magazine had to pay Zizou something like 50,000 Euros for printing pictures that even implied he had an affair), I would be amazed that a magazine would print something like this if it had no basis in fact. It will be interesting to see if they print a retraction.

Please please please !!!
NEVER believe as truth a word written in “Lyon Mag”.
They ALWAYS write things like this shit. I’m sorry. But they have to create “scoops” to sale their newspaper.
What I can say about that, is I was with Sonny Anderson, yesterday.
We talked about Govou’s statement. He thinks like me that’s shit. OL had problems 3 or 4 months ago (what a surprise !!) but not really because “Aulas and Houiller” decided to make Juninho the team star.
That’s because Juninho had problems, and he didn’t really knew how to resolve it. So he became nervous, and he stopped to help his teammates, when it was important for them to have the advices and support of Juni… And the match against roma, and against Bordeaux complicated more and more this situation… That’s it !Please, don’t believe as truth Lyon mag !

You…were…with…Sonny???
*faints*
I so obviously need to move to Lyon and get a job at Tola Vologe.
About Lyon Mag…it’s weird, until yesterday I had no idea that they were anti-OL, as the club accused them of. All of their OL articles I read were really interesting and well-balanced. I guess I read the wrong ones!
I can accept that the article twisted words around, but I really do think there were ego problems at Lyon a few months ago. Especially Fred’s.

I’m a PSG fan but I’ve always admired Lyon for their team solidarity and spirit. It’s something that Lyon players even carry on to their next clubs (Capello recently said about Diarra that his team spirit was the result of his time with Lyon).
So I was really surprised when the players started speaking out in the press.

lol Inara. You know you’re welcome to Lyon
You can stand in my house, for few days… And I will present U sonny ! He is a real cool guy… and so happy to do his jubile in Lyon. That will be tomorrow evening… wiht Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Henri, Trezeguet, Bebeto, Riquelme etc etc…
So, that’s not the subject, sorry !About Lyon Mag, if U didn’t here abot there anti-OL spirit, is because that’s not really true. They are anto-everything. They just want to write things to sell their paper. Unbelievable stories is better for business.
But I still think like U some ego’s problems were running at Lyon’s this year… But not like Lyon mag is written it.Posted from

I was at Lyon several years ago (which is when I fell in love with the place and saw my first OL game), and I would love to return there. Great city, great people, great food…great football.
What more does a girl need? I really wish I could be at the Gerland tomorrow, but since I can’t, I’m relying on you to be my eyes and ears, Joffrey! Let us all know how it was!

Yes, he is god alive, here
And is pretty cool !
You can trust me, I will write here how was this extraordinary jubile…
And yesterday, I was thinking of something about that… Don’t U think it’s possible that JM Aulas profit of the jubile to see and discuss with some players… for next year ?
Trezeguet will be here (we all know the story between OL and Trezegoal), Riquelme too (why not ??? lol), and so many people…
We can dream ! lolPosted from

Let’s hope Trezegol signs a contract while he’s at Lyon. Especially after his recent shenanigans (telling Juve bigwigs to fuck off, basically), I’m hoping it will be easier this time to get him.

Hey !
I just come back from Sonny Anderson’s jubile !
That was reaaaally an affecting moment… Sonny Anderson and all his friend, for his last match at Gerland… More than 30 000 supporters were here, but all the “great” players announced was not ! No Ronaldinho, no Riquelme, no trezeguet, no bebeto… I was pretty disappointed about that, and I really wonder if there was not some liars to attract people… I hope not ! Never mind.
The teams was “les Lions Blancs” (first team who win the french championship with Lyon) against the “men in black” (sonny’s friend), but that was not very observed… Some players was with the Lions blancs, like Pascal Obispo (french singers) or else ! They never played football ! lol
That was pretty cool, Sonny did an half time with each teams. The Men in Black wan by 5-3… Sonny scored 3 goals and made a pass to his nephew who scored a goal.
The last goal has been scored by… Sonny’s son !!! He’s probably 10 yo ! He entered 5 minutes before the end of the match, and scored a wonderful goal against Joel Bats !
This moment was very crazy for people in Gerland, and Gilles Veissiere (famous french referee) profited of it to blow the end of the match !
Then, Sonny has thank everybody with the microphone, and cried a lot. lol
That was really something important for him (he told me that last fridays), to see how many people came to see him and to say to him how wonderful he was for Olympique Lyonnais.Thank U Sonnygoal !

Thanks so much for the recap, Joffrey! I’m glad you had such a great time.
I’m unsurprised that Ronaldinho and the other La Liga kids didn’t show up. They still have one game left to play…plus I doubt testimonial matches are his thing anyway.
But Henry and Thuram were there. I’m surprised Trezeguet wasn’t, but his life is a big mess right now. Oh well.
