Hungover Lyon celebrates sixth title with another scoreless draw
By: Inara | April 22nd, 2007Because nil-nil is so in right now.
In their last five matches, Lyon have only scored ONE goal, and that was in their win against relegation fodder Sedan.
Remember last weekend, where only eight goals were scored in Ligue 1, with six scoreless matches? Well, France has woken up from its stupor, and this weekend, the goals came pouring in everywhere…except in Lyon’s match against Auxerre! This was the only match that was scoreless this weekend. How embarrassing for the team that was just crowned champions the night before.
Does Lyon need a map to find the back of the net or what?
Maybe the party should have been held off until after the match.
Intrepid French football journalists suspect that the entire Lyon team were still suffering the effects of last night’s champagne when they played Auxerre this afternoon. Despite dominating possession and having 17 shots to Auxerre’s 2, Lyon walked away with only one point and three yellow cards (which means that Cris will be suspended during the match against PSG while Juninho, Muller, and Clerc are one yellow card away from suspension). Terrific.
Nothing interesting happened today. Baros had a few good chances, but Auxerre’s goalkeeper was at the top of his game. I don’t have too much beef with Baros’s performance because he’s had a bad week, so I’ll cut him a little slack. He was replaced by young talent Gregory Bettiol, who was unfortunate not to score at the last minute.
Toulalan is finally regaining his form from the first half of the season. After Baros, he was easily Lyon’s most active player. Kallstrom was doing well too, but then an Auxerre defender stepped on his ankle (it could have been a penalty), so he had to be subbed out.
On the Auxerre side, Pedretti had a good game, and so did Younes Kaboul, who was tackling left and right. Kaboul, as some of you might know, is a potential Lyon target for this summer’s mercato.
That’s pretty much it. Sam has the rest of this weekend’s results at the France Offside.

doesnt it figure that pedretti would play well against us. Kaboul looks to be a dominating central defender, and Bettiol did well too. But Lyon werent kicking in to gear, they arent enjoying their football and they seem to lack confidence, probably due to the elimination from the cups. They were in such good form at the beginning of the year, do you think they are burned out already?

Lyon definitely haven’t been enjoying their football. You can tell that some of them have been treating the sport like a boring nine-to-five job.
Is it burnout? Maybe. But I think it’s also boredom. If you pay attention, you’ll realize that the players who are currently playing well (Kallstrom, Toulalan, Squillaci, Baros) are the ones who haven’t won a title yet. So they still feel like they have something to prove.
For everyone else, it’s old news. And who gets excited by old news?
