It’s Getting a Little Hot Under the Collar
By: Inara | September 23rd, 2007Surprisingly - and unfortunately - Lyon were held to a 1-1 draw by Lille - at home. I expected the scoreline to be in Lyon’s favor, but in hindsight, I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised.

Les Dogues kept Benzema on a short leash.
The game from start to finish was an even affair. I don’t think either team dominated the other for long periods of time. Lille used their strong midfield play to keep Juninho and Mathieu Bodmer quiet, so most of the action happened on the wings. Early on, Karim Benzema came close a few times, but it was Lille who scored first, with Michel Bastos nailing an absolute beauty. Lyon’s man-marking might have been a bit off (either Francois Clerc or Sebastien Squillaci), but that shot came out of nowhere, and Remy Vercoutre had no chance.
In the second half, Benzema was quieter, though Kader Keita had his best game in a while, constantly running up and down the flanks on either side, finally offering his first assist in a Lyon shirt. The goalscorer was Sidney Govou, who doggedly went past two defenders before he could take his shot.
The goals:
Lyon also scored two other goals, but one was ruled offside while the other was a Hand of God (both by Milan Baros). Also, Fabio Grosso got into a shoving match with everyone’s favorite Swiss hothead, Stephan Lichtsteiner.
Lille had a very, very good game today. They were careful to keep Lyon’s danger players (Juninho, Keita, Govou, and Benzema) tightly marked at all times. While I wish Lyon hadn’t dropped two points at home, this draw with Lille is by no means embarrassing. In fact, I wonder just why Lille aren’t doing better in the league because if they approached every game like they did with today’s, they would be in the top three.
As for Lyon, you could tell that the post-Barca slump was still in effect. Some players looked rather sluggish on the pitch, especially Juninho. I’m not sure if it’s because of the Perrin thing or if he’s just tired, but he needs to get his act together. Not only were his free kicks crap, but even his corners were pretty much useless. Though he did have one gem that connected with Bodmer’s head - it would have been a goal if not for the superhuman reflexes of Tony Sylva (such an underrated goalkeeper).
Speaking of goalkeepers, Vercoutre had a great match. He’s getting better and better as the season progresses, which makes me wonder if he made a mistake at staying as Gregory Coupet’s backup for so many years. Tonight’s match was also big for Cleber Anderson, who started the match. I thought he did a good job and was much more reassuring than Bodmer in defense. Anderson was timely on his tackles and formed a good partnership with Squillaci.

Perrin’s discomfort is obvious.
Three negatives from this match. FirstPerrin looked stressed out the entire game, and after the game ended, he looked awfully tense, as if he was expecting a bad phone call. Not that he should worry - Aulas jumped to his defense in a post-match interview, where he not only backed Perrin but also accused French journalists of creating a polemic around Lyon.
Thanks for keeping it real, Jean-mimi.
Also, Benzema picked up a slight knock to his knee in the first half. While it was minor and allowed him to reenter the game, it’s a reminder that he’s still a growing boy (he’s only 19), and Perrin needs to be careful not to overplay him, or worse, not pay attention to his weariness.
The other bad thing is that Juninho still looks like he’s irritated though on OLTV he said he wasn’t. After the game ended, he unceremoniously stomped off the field, tearing off his captain’s armband in the process. Could someone tell him to relax?
Sure, Lyon are in fourth place right now. But I’m totally not stressing because Lyon will eventually get to first place. Maybe the team isn’t playing thundering football like last year, but I would rather have a quiet season that yields more results (like AC Milan last year) than one that’s filled with excitement but no substance (umm…Lyon in 2006).
Lyon will find the balance they are seeking. I still think that this season could be bright for OL.

very good post-match comments…
Juninho needs to calm down, I especially didn’t like the way he tore off the captains armband.

nice pics. i wish i could have watched the game but as you know i followed the scoreline via eurosport. i’m starting to think of Lyon in ‘last season Arsenal’ terms. you could see that that had alot of young talented players who needed time to mature into their positions and that, despite shake-ups and losing important veteran players, they would develop into a great team in time. if we’re lucky maybe that time-line will be sped up and we’ll see Lyon turn into a great team with Ben Arfa, Benzema, Bodmer, Keita, and Toulalan blossoming early. This season. Otherwise, assuming the young players don’t leave us, it will have to wait until next season.

It’s good to hear that Keita is starting and doing something for once. What formation did Perrin use?

I was at Gerland last night and to be honest felt that a draw was tough (on Lyon not Lille!) though yes Lille did play well.
Personally I thought Juni had a not bad game - I didn’t see the armband throwing - thats definately not the maturity and leadership you need in a captain.Anderson was impressive. Not as powerful as Cris (who is?) but felt a very safe defender who seemed to do the job calmly and easily.
Vercoutre was also playing at the level we saw of him against Barca and for the first time I started to feel more relaxed when when the ball went near our goal. I’m still a little in shock at seeing him play at this level.Govou was also in good form, a few normal Govou misses but generally good and a great goal.
Toulalan continued to play well.
But for me our top man was definately Benzema. It really seems like this season he’s moved from being a great, very promising youngster to being one of the big guys. Whereas Govou and Baros can be good, they can mess up, when Bezema gets the ball it just feels much safer - as if he’s more confident, more secure in what he’s going to do. I really think its amazing to see this level of maturity and confidence in an 18 year old. Please, please stay at Lyon Karem! The ground wasn’t very full - just under 33,000 but KO was 9pm on Sunday night (with the option of seeing the match on Canal+) so didn’t really encourage a mass turnout

I totally agree on Benzema. He’s so confident that you get the feeling he’s going to score. No wonder Lille had two men on him! Strange that Lyon’s danger man is a 19 year old. Now I hope the EPL and La Liga greedy clubs keep their dirty hands away from him.

juni is, was and always will be an emotional player… it’s his hotheadedness that beat le mans! take it easy? i don’t think so.
this game was a very important sign… against a talented, well-positioned opponent, they were “dans le sens de la marche” for 85 minutes. against barça, abidal didn’t recognize his old team, but in this match he definitely would have. a half dozen whatifs and OL wins 4-0.
my MOTM is keita… simply because he realized for the first time he has teammates. solid all match long, and besides the luminous opening for govou, he offered benzema a simple solution that karim should have taken instead of trying to dribble his 4th & 5th lillois on his “folle équipée”… it would have led to our first goal and put the match on its head.

I was at Gerland too. That was a really good match, with a Lyon I like to see. Aumatisms are closer to what it has to be, and I continue to not be worry about this season. But I still think we haven’t the team for a long way in CL this year.
About Lille’s game, this is my rates :
Vercoutre : 7
Clerc : 6
Squillaci : 7
Anderson : 6.5
Grosso : 7
Toulalan : 8
Juninho : 8
Bodmer : 7
Keita : 7
Govou : 8
Benzema : 8.5Substitutes :
Baros : 6
Ben Harfa : 6

By the way, Juni didn’t throw out his armband after the match. That was DURING the game. Maybe it was just broken, and fallen !

Definately a more acceptable explanation for the armband! They’re have to stitch it better next time!
