Ladies: Lyon 0 - 0 Arsenal
By: Inara | November 15th, 2007
Yesterday was the first leg tie of the UEFA Women’s Cup quarterfinals, with Lyon playing first leg against the title holders Arsenal at the Stade de Gerland.
Arsenal, who’ve steam rolled every team they’ve come up against so far, were forced to content themselves with their first scoreless draw in the competition. Lyon on the other hand, had to start off in the first qualifying round due to their being newbies in Europe, but they more than proved they belong in the tournament by holding off England star striker Kelly Smith.
The first half was pretty much dominated by Arsenal, though Lyon took over in the second half. Despite the lack of goals, it was a fun, entertaining affair that featured a lot of attacking displays. While Lyon failed to capitalize their home ground advantage, Arsenal missed the chance in scoring an away goal, which is always a good thing (though I think Arsenal have the advantage over Lyon right now). Read what an Arsenal player has to say about the match here.
The match drew a very respectable 5,000 spectators, and as you can see from the picture above, OL supporters made sure they were that 12th player on the pitch.
The second leg takes place next Wednesday, November 21st in London, at Meadow Park Stadium in Boreham Wood. With a total capacity of around 4,000, this stadium is far less impressive than the Gerland (I guess Arsene Wenger doesn’t like sharing Emirates Stadium with the ladies side), but I imagine Arsenal Ladies will draw more supporters for their home game against Lyon than they do for their usual league games (normal attendances are in the hundreds - same as Lyon’s).
Lyon have their work cut out for them in order to qualify, but their UEFA Women’s Cup dream can still be a reality.
Question: why does the Lyon club badge say LOL and not OL? Or is that just for OL ladies?

Domestic results:
Lyon are dominating D1 (France’s top women’s division). After defeating Evreax 2-0 this weekend (Katia, Cruz Trana), OL Ladies are six points ahead of nearest rivals Juvisy, and barring a crisis, I don’t see anyone challenging the women for first place this season. It’s obvious that Aulas wants the women’s side to become as successful as the men’s, and perhaps this season the ladies can add a cup or two to their (probable) domestic championship win.
Current D1 standings:
1 - LYON, 28 pts, +28
2 – JUVISY, 22 pts, +15
3 – MONTPELLIER, 21 pts, +13
4 – St ETIENNE, 18 pts, 0
5 – VENDENHEIM, 17 pts, -9
6 – PSG, 15 pts, -3
7 – SOYAUX, 14 pts, -2
8 – LA ROCHE 14 pts, -3
9 – TOULOUSE 14 pts, -7
10 – EVREUX, 14 pts, -9
11 – HENIN BEAUMONT, 13 pts, -14
12 – ST BRIEUC, 12 pts, -9

the LOL badge is a photoshopped logo that’s popular enough amongst non-Lyon fans.

Off topic, but do you have a Sopcast channel for France-Morocco? I’d send hugs all across the country if you do.

This was a really good match which did a lot of justice to women’s football. The crowds (though I’ve heard varying ‘official’ reports from 3000 to 5000) is a significant increase on the 900 odd in the qualifing - admittedly this was Arsenal but it was a mid week and a VERY cold night in Lyon.
Inara do you know whether Camille Abily is injured? She didn’t come on until well into the second half and was wearing a bandage. I’m assuming it must have been an injury to have kept her from starting but I can’t find any info. When she came on she changed the whole pace of the Lyon game.
From the team post match comments I think the ability of OL feminin to effectively match Arsenal Ladies rather took them by surprise, and will hopefully give them a motivational boost next week.Posted from

Guignol will probably know better, but I heard she picked up an injury last week and was uncertain for the game. I don’t think the coach would have put her in at all if Arsenal hadn’t been owning Lyon that first half.
She should be fit for next week though. There’s a reason she’s been voted France’s best female player two years in a row. I think she’s even the captain of Les Bleues.

Niko Kranjcar? That was a transfer rumor a while back is it still going around?

yes, abily was ALL bandaged up and it took a lot of heart for her to play at all.
btw, while looking around for an update on her injury (nothing) i ran into a little blurb that for their participation in the WWC in china, England ladies received the princessly sum of… £40!
digging a bit deeper it’s actually £40 per day, £1,400 total… but still pretty pathetic.

I heard that - really poor wages. At the same time the average annual wage of an English (male) Premiership player has just broken through £1m. The highest paid is John Terry who is now earning £135,000 a week (approx 190,000 €). Unreal numbers at both ends of the scale huh. Obviously there are market economics which will always be a big driver but even so.
Apparently the Brazilian girls who played in the World Cup were due to have received an equal portion of their winnings (I think they were all supposed to receive about 17,000 €)but have so far received nothing and are not holding their breath. I believe the only well paid girls’ player is Martha who gets something like 30,000€/month but she is a complete exception.

On one hand, unless women footballers get higher salaries, the sport won’t grow because it will be hard to convince women to pursue football when even as a baker they’d get more money. But the interest in women’s football isn’t that great, whereas men’s football sells, so their salaries are eventually paid off.
Just curious, but any idea on how much OL Ladies make? I know they are semi-professional, but so is Arsenal I believe.

I think they make between 2,000 and 5,000€ a month but will often have (modest) accomodation and car provided (definately no Audis!).

with very few exceptions women footballers make more in match money “primes de match” from the fed than they do from the clubs. i read once where a USWNT player gets $70K/year from the fed and the best known get about the same from publicity deals.
part of that is for presence at training camp, which is why (as i understood) the americans left OL even though they were getting paid enough to cause jealousy on the team: they were making more just to practice for USA.

and don’t forget tonight’s the night! return leg at arsenal starts in 150 minutes!
OL ladies should be relaxed yet confident… they’re outsiders, but they know arsenal isn’t going to eat them.
JMA will be there, that will give the girls a chance to shout “hého! par ici la monnaie!”Posted from

Yes i read that JMA will be there for the match. I think that’s fantastic given that he could easily have chosen to see the French NT play. Maybe he’ll realise this is his easiest route to winning a European title in the short term… Now that would be good time to talk about salary increases!

Oh boy - I’ve just seen the scoreline on Arsenal’s website 3:2 for OL!!!!!! We’ve won, we’re through to the semi finals. Wow!!!! I’ve been trying all evening to get the score and couldn’t find it anywhere, now I’ve just found it. How good is that?
So if they can beat Arsenal why can’t they go through to the end. I need to calm down, I’m so pleased! My national team have just crashed pitifully out of Euro 08 but this is more than compensation.

Great for the Ol-Ladies!
I apologize already, but I have to say it one more time: Aulas is a genius!
But let’s talk football again. The Ladies should definitely go to win the CL. Arsenal was IMO the only very big team out there. Lyon should be the favourites now.Posted from

Pride of Lyon I agree - in theory OL should now go all the way through - as long as complacency doesn’t set in…Really though can you imagine the scenario - the first time they play in this competition and they win. How much with Aulas love them then.
btw this was Arsenal Ladies first defeat in 21 months in a domestic or European competition.
The weather was terrible and difficult to play in. The first half sounded quite well balanced but the the second half the Arsenal Ladies looked very tired. Vic Akers their manager conceeds that they weren’t the stronger team last night but that a heavy fixture list since the World Cup ( 2 matches a week - ouch) had left them worn out.
btw the goals were from Katia, Abily (2:2 at half time) and then Thomis scored the winner five minutes from timePosted from

I am so thrilled for the ladies! They were the underdogs, but way to tell Arsenal to stick their unbeaten record up their ass!
They will probably face Umea (and Marta) in the semifinals.
