I am so thrilled for the ladies! They were the underdogs, but way to tell Arsenal to stick their unbeaten record up their ass!

They will probably face Umea (and Marta) in the semifinals.

Pride of Lyon I agree - in theory OL should now go all the way through - as long as complacency doesn't set in...Really though can you imagine the scenario - the first time they play in this competition and they win. How much with Aulas love them then.

btw this was Arsenal Ladies first defeat in 21 months in a domestic or European competition.
The weather was terrible and difficult to play in. The first half sounded quite well balanced but the the second half the Arsenal Ladies looked very tired. Vic Akers their manager conceeds that they weren't the stronger team last night but that a heavy fixture list since the World Cup ( 2 matches a week - ouch) had left them worn out.
btw the goals were from Katia, Abily (2:2 at half time) and then Thomis scored the winner five minutes from time

Great for the Ol-Ladies!
I apologize already, but I have to say it one more time: Aulas is a genius!
But let's talk football again. The Ladies should definitely go to win the CL. Arsenal was IMO the only very big team out there. Lyon should be the favourites now.

Oh boy - I've just seen the scoreline on Arsenal's website 3:2 for OL!!!!!! We've won, we're through to the semi finals. Wow!!!! I've been trying all evening to get the score and couldn't find it anywhere, now I've just found it. How good is that?

So if they can beat Arsenal why can't they go through to the end. I need to calm down, I'm so pleased! My national team have just crashed pitifully out of Euro 08 but this is more than compensation.

Yes i read that JMA will be there for the match. I think that's fantastic given that he could easily have chosen to see the French NT play. Maybe he'll realise this is his easiest route to winning a European title in the short term... Now that would be good time to talk about salary increases!

and don't forget tonight's the night! return leg at arsenal starts in 150 minutes!

OL ladies should be relaxed yet confident... they're outsiders, but they know arsenal isn't going to eat them.
JMA will be there, that will give the girls a chance to shout "hého! par ici la monnaie!"

with very few exceptions women footballers make more in match money "primes de match" from the fed than they do from the clubs. i read once where a USWNT player gets $70K/year from the fed and the best known get about the same from publicity deals.

part of that is for presence at training camp, which is why (as i understood) the americans left OL even though they were getting paid enough to cause jealousy on the team: they were making more just to practice for USA.

I think they make between 2,000 and 5,000€ a month but will often have (modest) accomodation and car provided (definately no Audis!).

On one hand, unless women footballers get higher salaries, the sport won't grow because it will be hard to convince women to pursue football when even as a baker they'd get more money. But the interest in women's football isn't that great, whereas men's football sells, so their salaries are eventually paid off.

Just curious, but any idea on how much OL Ladies make? I know they are semi-professional, but so is Arsenal I believe.

I heard that - really poor wages. At the same time the average annual wage of an English (male) Premiership player has just broken through £1m. The highest paid is John Terry who is now earning £135,000 a week (approx 190,000 €). Unreal numbers at both ends of the scale huh. Obviously there are market economics which will always be a big driver but even so.

Apparently the Brazilian girls who played in the World Cup were due to have received an equal portion of their winnings (I think they were all supposed to receive about 17,000 €)but have so far received nothing and are not holding their breath. I believe the only well paid girls' player is Martha who gets something like 30,000€/month but she is a complete exception.
