Latest Transfer News and Rumors

By: John | January 21st, 2009

The opening of the transfer window saw barely any rumors of potential transfers into Lyon. It looked like Puel was content with what he had and stated many times that OL “weren’t going to recruit just for the sake of recruiting.” Indeed, it looked like Lyon weren’t going to make any moves at all, aside from the fizzled-out Pascal Chimbonda courtship. But In the last two weeks, a flurry of activity has begun on the acquisition front, especially after the injuries to Sidney Govou and John Mensah, and the departure of Fred, who it seems everyone -except JMA- was sure would not renew his contract and leave at this winter window. A long list of names rumored to be Lyon targets have come across the football papers in the last weeks, from weak rumors like Modibo Diakate, to Brazilians Anderson, Guilherme, and Kleber, to more solid rumors like Charles N’Zogbia. The following is a list of the concrete negociations that OL are/have been involved in, and a new development or two.

Defense:

Lyon seem to be focused solely on finding a RB as the only negotiations on the defensive front- St. Etienne rejected OL’s interest in Mouhamadou Dabo- seem to be for Julien Faubert. With the injuries to Mensah and Govou, Faubert has become more appealing to OL since he can play all along the right side.
For those who aren’t familiar with him, Faubert is an ex-Cannes and Bordeaux player who moved to West Ham in ‘07. He ruptured his achilles tendon in his first season and has seen little playing time since then. He has (0) goals in (25) appearences for WH and (1) goal in (1) appearence for the French NT. Even though West Ham coach Gianfranco Zola has now declared that he wants Faubert to stay, Julien seems to have his heart set on joining Lyon and all the perqs that that may bring i.e., return to the France squad, CL play, etc. He recently had this to say about the deal in Aujourd’hui Sport:

“I am crossing my fingers. Lyon would really be great. I would rediscover Ligue 1 and France but also the Champions League and the eyes of the national-team coach. Because my aim still remains the 2010 World Cup. I really hope this is going to sort itself out.”

The only thing seemingly holding-up the deal is Lyon’s desire for a loan deal. But it seems that the signing is emminent and Faubert should be joining Lyon soon.
Alot of you have voiced your lack of ethusiasm over this trasfer. I’ve also been wondering if the Lyon staff have taken into account Faubert’s serious injury, inlight of the fact that our players are dropping like flies, with many starting to blame the conditioning coach. On the bright side, if Lyon do lose to Barca, then we really won’t need another right back- maybe just for back-up- since Gassama can get the job done in league play. A young leftback who can play on the right also would be much more useful in this situation. And as long as it’s a loan deal, there really isn’t much downside, along as Faubert stays healthy that is.

Offense:

Lyon have made a move for Caen stiker Steve Savidan. After Caen rubuffed Marseille’s offer for the former Valenciennes man, Lyon have made a move, offering 13mill euros including Frederic Piquionne. Caen has said that they don’t wish to sell their prized asset, but Savidan has coyley stated that he would be open to a move, but that it’s not an imperative for him. It’s doubtful that Caen will turn down this offer for a 30year-old striker, but stranger things have happened. Savidan has avereged 14 goals per year the last three years with Valenciennes and is currently 6th in the league in scoring, just two goals behind Karim Benzema. I love his humble attitude, something that would be a breath of fresh air at OL, and it would be quite a “Cinderella” story if he ended up at Lyon with a fat contract after working at a grocery store to support himself during the offseason in the past, but I think that kind of money for a striker of that age is not smart. I’d rather see that money go towards getting Loic Remy back next year.

Real Zaragoza’s striker Ricardo Oliveira is back in Lyon’s sights. Rumors are starting that OL will be looking to bring-in the Brazilian, to replace everyone’s favorite Brazilian striker at Lyon, who up till now and unfortunately hasn’t been been forcefully put on a plane by French authorities and shipped back to Brazil with the utmost expedience.
Oliviera is a prolific striker and has (7) goals in (8) appearences this season and scored (18) in (37) last season. Although Zaragoza were relegated to second division(Segund Liga) this season, Oliveira decided to stay on, rufusing a loan spell.
Which begs the question: why would he be willing to move to Lyon? Nothing came of Lyon’s interest during the past summer. I’m sure if he wanted to leave, the ex-AC Milan man would have plenty of larger clubs after his signature. Also, why would he come to OL to play second to Benzema? I could understand if we played a 4-4-2. So unless he’s desperate to play in possibly one CL game, I don’t understand why he would even consider it.

John-Are you stupid ?Oliveira is not Eto o or Berbatov or Ibrahimovic. You talked about him as if he is one of the worlds best strikers who would laugh off interest from Lyon. The fact is if we signed him Puel probably would play him upfront with Benzema on the left/Bench,as is the case with Fred who is often No 1 striker. And know I highly doubt he will have bigger offers,as any big club he has been to(AC Milan,Valencia)hes fucked up at especially AC Milan-they were practically begging clubs to take him. The fact is Oliveira, his agent and Lyon have all said they would like this move to happen. Oh and yer I really do wonder why any striker would possibly want to leave a spanish second division side to join a European hevyweight in the CL knock out round playing Barca where he could get back in to Brazil national team and earn more money. So yer your right really cant see him wanting a move. (NOT)

Ronan, watch who you’re insulting. You’re a brave little man hurling insults from behind your computer. I’m not a loser and I don’t have all the time in the world to watch every player on every pitch. That being said, I made an assumption based on his scoring prowess. I also imagined he might be that good because his name has been linked with Lyon in the past for whatever reason- and either due to his or Lyon’s decision- he hasn’t come. But, I never thought he was a worldclass player or anything of the sort. I could never make that claim about someone if I’ve never seen them play. But less than wordlclass players have and will continue not to come to OL for whatever reasons. I’ve read that he could have left Zaragoza when they were relegated but chose not to. Also, there’s a bunch of strikers out there- including your pal Fred- who are of lesser talent than Karim, and who wouldn’t be happy being #2 at Lyon. I also assumed that if Oliveira wanted better chances on being selected to the Brazilian NT, he would go were he would get more playing time, and he would certainly get more time at Zaragoza than at Lyon. Why do players at big clubs bitch about not getting playing time? Are you saying that just being on a big club and not playing, increases your chances of being selected over being at a smaller club and getting more playing time? Is that how it works? I’m rather new to club football so please tell me if that’s how it works or not. And if he’s as average as you say, why would Puel bother in bringing in an average striker and move his move Benzema(his greatest offensive weapon) out of postion to the left to accomodate him anyway? I know he did with Fred, probably to keep him happy so he’d renew his contract; well hopefully that’s why he did that. My comments about Oliveira were just based on assumptions since I’ve actually never seen him play, so I knew that I very well may have been wrong on making any claim about his worth as a player, but I thought that if I were wrong, someone with first-hand knowledge would correct me in a mature way, then again, there is absolutely nothing mature about you. And I guess it shows how little you think of yourself bec since I’ve starting reading this blog you are constantly insulting others. I guess you need to fell good about yourself in some manner.

Stop the bashing both of you. This isn’t the place for it. I, like most, come here for information on Lyon. Ronan, keep the negativity to yourself, if you have a problem with something said, then give your opinion some credibility by discussing it in a peaceful, educated manner. John, I hope you just had a bad day, you’re usually good. That said, you both make good points, and as of right now there isn’t enough information on the transfer to keep speculating like this. Lets just leave it as it is.

No a player playing second division football will NEVER get in to the Brazil National team, like a player playing in Ligue 2 will never get into the french national team. Oliveira is thinking about Lyon a big club, higher wages, other Brazillians,If I play well national team call up and also regular CL football. So he would love to leave Zaragoza as he has already stated to join OL.Oliveira wanted to come in the summer but we signed Piquioone for some stupid reason, probably because time for a 20mill transfer was running out. And also if you havent noticed Lyon often go for average players(Faubert,Mensah,Nzogbia,Piquioone,Boumsong)so signing Oliveira is no exception accept he is better than average.Sorry I dont ever mean to be rude but its just what I think.

Haha, haven’t posted in a while, good to see alls well here! :)

My opinion if anyones interested, this depends on money. I like Oliveira, I watched him with Zara and was class with Milito(another of our targets). He never got a proper chance at AC and his transfer fee put major pressure on him. What I like about him is he is quick and very direct.

Here’s the thing about his ambitions, he obviously doesn’t want to be on the bench. But another sad fact is Benzema will most likely leave at the end of this season so he wouldn’t be bad to have on ice.

On another side, extremely dissapointed with the quality and lack of potential defensive signings. Jean Michel Aulas was going on about signing the best in Europe to get Karim hyped up and all. Realistically we could probably nab Colocinni from Newcastle, maybe even the out of favour Garay from Real Madrid if we really meant business.

Ronan: Thanks for clarifying that about NT selection. Sorry if I was over-aggressive.

Rougebleu: yeah, I kind of rushed things, trying to get something out for you guys to talk about, and I made a mistake: making an an assumption based on stats which is somtimes a flawed way of drawing conclusions, because without observation to back it up, the assumptions can often turn out to be specious.

No we fucking dont want Gignac hes an ugly bastard who is just im good form,by this time hell just be like the rest of the shit Ligue 1 strikers mark my words. We dont want ligue 1 playes unless they are genuinely talented. Getting Mancini is brilliant if we get him then fuck Bastos anyway. Why are Lyon being linked with different strikers every day-that shows me that the stories are mostly bullshit.Crespo would have been a great signing 3/4 years ago but not today,Oliveira is better

I also read that Lyon were renewing their interest in Crespo.

Honestly? All these names are totally unappealing. But the worst has to be Kim (as in the guy who left Nancy for Qatar last season). I think I might have to quit being an OL fan if that happens.

I really think that our club have actually, maybe since 2-3 year now, too much difficult for signing player who is able to improve level team, it’s a pity because the progress was interesting last 3 years. Rumors transfert show us that lyon is looking for strikers, probably young talent, there is guillerme, marcelo’s find.
Dabo is a serious way too, very good player and arsenal target. mancini from inter maybe for the next season, lyon have tried to buy him last summer, 25M€ was offer to roma! there is a player that i’m really think lyon is looking for, this is gilardino from fiorentina, durind champion’s league , he was impressive, a dangerous poison, he can score 2 goal by playing 3 poor ball, making our defense upset on aerial game. Jean michel aulas looked impressed by him.
Sorry for my poor english, in france our teacher are crappy.

also, why would the club want to throw kallstrom into a deal for a striker. Nobody realizes that when kallstrom plays, lyon win. Why sell such an inspirational figure who has so much talent
