Le Havre AC vs Lyon

By: John | February 15th, 2009

Hopefully it will be a slow day for Le Policier against Havre’s “well behaved” offense.
Febuary 15, 2009
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
11 A.M. EST(17:00 CET, 16:00 GMT)

After coming-out of last weekend’s match vs. Nice with three points in an impressive 3-1 victory, OL come back home to take-on Havre AC and hopefully keep the momentum going. Le Havre are currently at the bottom of the table and seem to be destined to head back to L2. They have just (15) points, with (4)wins, (3)draws, and (16) losses. They are 18th in attack with (17) goals scored to Lyon’s (30), and last in defense with (40) goals allowed, compared to Lyon’s (15). Le Havre have two wins in their last fourteen fixtures, but they are coming-off-of a victory last week against Rennes- they seem to have Rennes number this year having beaten them in the round of sixteen in the CdF. Lyon meanwhile hope to improve on their form at home as of late, since they’ve seemed flat at Gerland since the break: with four draws and just two goals scored in their last four home matches. With this stale run of form, rumors are circulating that Puel is considering using the visitors’ lockeroom this weekend as extra motivation for the players.

History: The teams have a 7-5-3 record in all matches, Lyon barely eaking-out a winning record vs. Le Havre with (7) victories. The last meeting between the teams- back in week six- ended in a 1-0 Lyon win, with Ederson netting his first goal of the season.

Injuries: The usuals, Clerc, Reveillere, Govou, Bodmer and Delgado(adductors) are out. We can now add Fabio Santos to that list, as he injured either his quadricep or calf depending on who’s report you read. He should be out for just this week.
Delgado did some light jogging this week. Clerc is doing light ball work and running with the squad, and Bodmer played with the CFA’s last week, but probably won’t see any action till next week.

Le groupe : Vercoutre, Lloris – Gassama, Mensah, Cris, Grosso, Boumsong, Källström, Juninho, Makoun, Toulalan, Keita, Mounier, Pjanic, Ederson, Benzema, Piquionne, Tafer.

Expected Line-up:

The OL website had a small piece on the effectiveness of the 4-4-3 last week. Lyon have only lost one game when starting in a 4-4-3, and espeicially interesting was that in games when the midfeild axis consisted of Makoun-Toulalan-Juninho, OL have never lost, averaging almost two goals a game. Puel had put JMak on the bench for a couple of matches, instead going with Kallstrom for a little more offensive creativity. But after last week’s performance, Makoun going nutts on offense, and scoring two goals, I think we’ll see the 4-3-3 again(with Makoun in it), albiet probably with different starters since some of the internationals may be tired from midweek action.
And at RB, I’m not sure if it will be Mensah or Gassama. Mensah is just coming back and I don’t know if Puel risks getting his only CL capable RB hurt- although Mensah could get hurt getting out of bed in the morning- or he plays him to get him ready. My guess it the latter. I don’t know what all this nonsense in the papers about Gassama not being inexperienced enough to play. He’s more than capable the holding-his-own in league play. To me Reveillere is out of a job when he comes back, unless he wants to be the back-up LB.

Lloris
Mensah-Cris-Boumsong-Grosso
Juninho-Toulalan-Makoun
Keita-Benzema-Ederson

Predictions: Le Havre obvioulsy have a sieve for a defense and their offense is as impotent as a harem eunuch. One of their few bright spots though, is French-Mauritanian striker Amadou Alassane. Alassane has (8) goals- nearly half of Le Havre’s total output. He’s a big striker-taller by two centimeters than Bodmer- with lots of pace and obviously skillful as well, but I don’t think it will be enough to dent Lyon’s defense, although Lyon’s collapses on set pieces are fricking annoying. Though Le Havre have momentum after beating one of the league’s top defensive squads in Rennes last week, unfortunately for them, Lyon are also coming-off-of a big, moral-boosting victory at Nice last weekend, and hopefully are on their way to gaining top form before Barcelona come to Gerland at the end of the month. I’m calling a 2-0 Lyon win.

but for pathetic finishing, lyon would be up 6-1.

benzema’s miss was excusable because it would have been a beautiful goal, but makoun and kallstrom, wow.

Yeah – I’d agree with Will. Lyon have created so many chances but the finishing has been poor. Benzema should have got 2 and Makoun and Kallstrom both had really good chances

We won, again. Oo I didn’t say that for months. Two games, goal different 6-2, that is ok. Juni play whole game. That’s very good.

Barca have lost a bit of their form, while we are getting better and better for every match..finally we are playing like a team. We create alot of great chances..only finishing is lacking–

Benzema looked to tired and didn’t have the energy to finish. The miss by Makoun looked like Shaquille O’Neal shooting a three pointer, and Kallstrom’s was just good goalkeeping by Revault.

No Will, Marseill must lose tonight. Why?? Because Marseille have 41 point, we have 49 points. That is +8 for us. Next round :

    Grenoble – PSG – draw
    St.Etienne – Bordeaux – draw
Marseille – Le Mans – draw

And we win against Nancy, and table looks :

    Lyon – 52p
    PSG – 46p
    Bordeaux – 44p
    Marseille – 42p

Soo Allez Monaco!!!! Beat that Marseille.

Just got back from Gerland. It was great to finally see a win at home. Nice match that we easilly won (and could have won by more). Ederson just gets better and better. He’s really getting ready to step into Juni’s shoes( not that those are looking tired!). Both share so many things including a really intelligent read of the game.
Our finishing however is shockingly amiss and Benzema is way off his best. And although we walked over Le Harve tonight, we will never the less still need to massively up our game for Barca.
Also not sure if you guys got this on the commentary but there was a nasty racist incident from one of the supporters against Mensah in the first half. Apparently he didn’t want to come back on for the second half and had to be persuaded by Puel to go back on. So yes his red card was stupid but in fairness I think he was probably unnerved for most of the match.

Storm – was it a Lyon or Le Havre fan? Because if it was a Lyon one then it could have some lasting damage

Sam it was a Le Harve fan (pretty poor given there were only about 30 who traveled down from Normandy). The ‘fan’has subsequently been arrested. Apparently there were racist insults targeted at several of the players even during the warm up, but because of Mensah’s RB position (right beside the stand for the Le Harve fans during the first half) he took the brunt of it. I remember there was an announcement made during the start of the second half stating that racist comments would not be tolerated.
Apparently Aulas is furious and left the pitch early to comfort Mensah. The club didn’t however inform the referee at half time (which they admit was probably a mistake).

Team to play Barca I think-
    Lloris
    Mensah-Cris-Boumsong-Grosso
    Toulalan-Makoun
    Delgado-Juninho-Ederson
    Benzema

    Subs-Vercoutre,Gassama,Bodmer,Kallstrom,Keita,Piquionne

and then in Nou Camp play

    Lloris
    Clerc-Cris-Boumsong-Grosso
    Toulalan-Kallstrom
    Keita-Ederson-Delgado
    Benzema

    subs-Vercoutre,Gassama,Pjanic,Juninho,Mounier,Piquionne
are tem lacks pace though thats why are quick players need to play (Mounier,Keita,Delgado,Benzema,Ederson and Piquionne)

Impressing game … but still, I think Hugo Lloris is one of the worst goalkeepers in L1. I miss Coupet.

How can you think Lloris is a bad goalkeeper? I totally agree with Dror, he is one of the best purchases ever. IMO he is even better than Coupet was, still he is only 21.

Wow. I feel bad for Mesnah even though he’s become my knew whipping-post lately. What I don’t understand is why players get so upset they want to leave the pitch? It’s exactly what these scummy racists want: to unerve the opposing players so they’ll leave the match. I wonder why players can’t use it to their advantage to play harder- not that they should even have to hear these things to begin with. I guess you have to experience it to know how it feels.

What ive never understood about racist chanters is that all of them(other than Zenit)have black players in the line up or at least the squad,so it really doesnt help anyone, its out of order big time.

mr cham you’re wrong , lloris is the best goalkeeper young talent, he is going show you that he can be the best in europe like cech or casillas, in france people prefer him to mandanda the actual national team goalkeeper. Is it a remake of barthez/coupet fight? Lloris had choice for joining AC milanwhen he left Nice, he prefered lyon for stability and sécurity carreer.

I have a serious list of players we should sign in the summer

    Fernando Amorebieta
    Michel Bastos
    Austin Ejide
    Alberto Medina
    Fernando Llorente
    Amantino Mancini

Now we WILL win the CL with these players and as well as our current squad except for a few fringe players. Also we are capable of buying each and every one of those players

    Interesting:

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/02/18/1115537/barcelona-without-iniesta-for-two-weeks

It looks like Barca will have a weakened left wing for the clash against OL. Knowing that we’ll have Mensah, Fabio Santos or Gassama on our right, this could be pretty important for our chances of survival.

I can’t w8 for the match against Barca..I actually have a good feeling about this..let’s just hope messi gets injuried! :) Iniesta injuried is a big boost..We should try to attack on the counter on Dani Alves’ side, since it is a lot of space there and ederson has the speed to make a threat.
