Lens vs. Lyon Preview
By: Inara | January 19th, 2008This is going to be an abbreviated match preview. With the African Cup of Nations starting tomorrow, I have my hands full with the Ghana World Cup Blog, so don’t be alarmed if I don’t post as frequently as I normally do.
Tomorrow, Lyon will be traveling to Lens in what is definitely not a clash of the titans. Whereas this time last year, when Lens was Lyon’s nearest challenger (and I use the term “near” very loosely), this year, nineteen places separate the two teams.

January 20th, 2008
Stade Felix-Bollaert, Lens
2:55 PM Eastern Time (20:55 in France)
Match background:
Lens are currently sitting in 19th place, but it’s hard to tell if their season is improving since the break or becoming worse. They lost to Paris 3-0 at the Parc de Princes last weekend, but during their Coupe de la Ligue match against Nancy, they beat them 3-0. Scoring three goals against the team with the meanest defense in L1 is no easy feat.
Lens aren’t hit too hard by the African Cup of Nations, having only lost Aruna Dindane to the Ivory Coast and Adam Coulibaly to Mali. Though Dindane is Lens’ highest scorer in the league this year. Lens have also recently signed Nadir Belhadj from Lyon, so we’ll be seeing him play against his old team. Count on him to put in a great performance, which will make Lyon regret selling him.
As for Lyon – well, they missed out on the Coupe de le Ligue after they lost to a Le Mans squad made up of mostly bench players, so hopefully the players will react positively and get another victory. Winning here means another important three points to solidify their position at the top of the table.
Lyon info:
I’m back to reporting injuries. As we all know, Cleber Anderson will be out for the rest of the season after getting hit with the Lyon Curse of Knee Ligament Damage. Juninho will not be on the team either because he fractured his fifth toe while Sidney Govou is still out due to a pulled thigh muscle.
Le groupe lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre – Clerc, Réveillère, Squillaci, Paillot, Grosso , Bodmer – Källström, Toulalan, Crosas – Ben Arfa, Delgado, Mounier – Benzéma, Baros, Rémy, Fred.
The good news is that both Hatem Ben Arfa and Francois Clerc return to action, both having been judged sufficiently recovered. Cesar Delgado is also on the list of players that will be on the bench though Perrin has said that he’s not yet at peak form.
Tactics:
Coupet
Clerc – Squillaci – Bodmer – Grosso
Crosas – Toulalan – Kallstrom
Baros – Benzema – Ben Arfa
Due to injuries, Lyon will have to reshuffle their usual lineup. Due to Anderson’s absence, it’s most likely that Mathieu Bodmer will be paired with Sebastien Squillaci. And since Juninho is injured and Bodmer will play in defense, that leaves Marc Crosas to make his Lyon debut. It’ll be interesting to see how he does since most of us have never seen him play, nor do we know exactly what kind of midfield player he is, or what role he’ll be playing.
Francois Clerc should get the start since Anthony Reveillere played in the last two games. No choice about Fabio Grosso, Jeremy Toulalan, and Kim Kallstrom.
As for the front line, it will probably be Karim Benzema starting as striker unless Perrin wants to give him a rest. In that case, expect to see Milan Baros since Fred is still probably being punished for being himself. On the wings, we’ll definitely see Hatem Ben Arfa on the left and either Baros or Loic Remy on the right. Delgado will probably come off the bench.
Viewing options:
Setanta will be broadcasting this match. Sweet. Also, you can check here for links. I probably can’t post match links as I normally do before matches since I’ll be watching Ghana vs. Guinea and commenting on that, so if anyone of you find a good stream, I’d appreciate it if you could post it in the comments for the others.
Expected Result:
I’ll be optimistic for once. How about…2-1 for Lyon? It’s been a while since Lens have scored against us, but take a look at our defense!

Please tell me he didn’t say Boumsong, my god, how do clubs see anything in that player. Honestly, I’d be ashamed of supporting Lyon if they bought him.

I won’t say anything about OL’s victory yesterday.
You know I’m a Lens’ fan as much as an OL’s supporter.
Lens just deserved their win with playing a football I didn’t see at Bollaert for 4 years.Posted from

Oups ! I meaned “About OL’s defeat !”
Sorry.Posted from

I don’t think people should take this defeat that harshly. Lyon deserved to lose and Lens deserved their victory, but the scoreline flattered Lens (that last goal was a joke). Watching the game on Setanta yesterday, what I saw was Lyon not playing to the best of their ability. Actually, they played like shit. But we know that Lyon aren’t shit and that when they do remember to play like Champions, the scoreline would have been in the opposite direction.
So I guess I’m not too worried about the team in terms of manpower…well, a new defender wouldn’t hurt…but I don’t want to see Lyon go through the same mental problems they had this time last year.

To whoever said that Belhadj deserved revenge for Lyon selling him, I don’t regret that Belhadj left because he’s not a Lyon caliber player. Grosso isn’t either so don’t think I’m hating on Belhadj alone. But none of them are anywhere near Abidal’s quality. We need a defender like him.

matthew you’ve cheered me up! I just hope that thats the type of team talk that Perrin is giving the team because as we saw last year Lyon is very capable of having a collective confidence wobble. Though I do still worry about the amount of injuries and the very fragile defence (plus Cris is apparently not certain for a return before the Man U match).
For what its worth here are l’Equipe marks (brace yourselves)
Coupet 5.5
Reveillere 4
Squillaci 4
Bodmer 3.5 (ouch)
Grosso 4
Crosas 4.5
Toulalan 5.5
Kallstrom 4.5
Delgado 3 (ouch again)
Benzema 5
Ben Arfa 5The Lens players were deservedly rated well with man of the match Belhadj who was awarded a wopping 8.

My question is…….where were lyon during this deal ? he would have helped us out tremendously

bramble did indeed do a shambles this weekend but apparently he’s been wigan’s best player this season…
as for mavuba… très peu pour moi, merci.
JAB? never been a big fan, but if his notorious blunders were all there was to his game he’d have been in qatar these past years instead of NUFC and juve.

Who here thinks Aulas looks like Ken livingston ?

I DONT GIVE A SHIT WHAT ANYONE HAS TO SAY ABOUT COMPLAINING AND “HOW WE SHOULDNT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS AND EVERYTHING IS STILL GOOD.” HORRIBLE MANAGING BY AULAS RIGHT NOW, WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING RIGHT NOW, CROSAS? NO MAVUBA? WHAT’S NEXT? SIGNING KOLLER AS ANOTHER BACK UP STRICKER?!

Looks like we’re trying to get Ederson…unlikely…but yeah. As for Aulas, without him I don’t think 95% of us, myself included, would be Lyon fans right now seeing as how not too many people watch ligue 2, so I trust his judgment. I think he’s tinkering with the team a bit, along with Perrin. I also think if Lyon could actually utilize effectively both the 433 and the 442, they’d have a greater tactical advantage against most teams, and be able to use some of that depth we have. I think it’s extremely difficult to adapt to that big a change in formation, as the beginning of this season showed perfectly, but if you look at the team changes we’re getting, I’m guessing that it might be probable we’ll be seeing it down the road again.

Ara, Aulas isn’t the manager. Perrin is. If I understand properly what the French media leads me to believe, Lacombe, Perrin and Aulas all get together, and define what kind of player they’re looking for. Then, with that profile in mind, Lacombe goes and looks for him, using scouts (Marcelo for Brasil) and his personal knowledge. He then comes back to Aulas and Perrin with his shortlist, and the three look at who is really interesting and who isn’t. Then, they decide all three to go for such and such a player, and Aulas goes and enquires about the player’s availability. He comes back, and then they see who they could bring in that they want, and for how much. And there, they choose. After that, Aulas pushes the deal through, and that’s it.
Crosas is a different kind of player from Mavuba. Mavuba is coming back from an injury, and I think Crosas is a better prospect in midfield than Mavuba. After all, Crosas was the player who played the most balls against Lens, and it was obvious he is adept of “toqué” (short play on the ground), and has very good ball technique. What’s more, Mavuba was looking for a sure starting place, whilst Crosas is happy to sit on the bench. And Lyon need a bench player more than someone who insists to be in the starting XI. After all, Toulalan, Juninho and Källström are better than Mavuba…
I’m more of the opinion that Perrin is a far too friable manager. I think Benzema needs a rest, and without Benzema, Juninho, Toulalan, Cris, Müller, Anderson and Fabio Santos, playing a 4-3-3 is risky, because you don’t have any proper defensive midfielders in the squad… I would have thought it would be a good time to give a rest to key players against Lens, such as Benzema, Ben Arfa or Källström… I’d have fielded a squad that would probably have lost, but that would have been more enthusiastic, and by resting key players, would be full of “bouncebackability” against the next opponent : Coupet – Clerc, Squillaci, Paillot, Grosso – Rémy, Crosas, Bodmer, Delgado – Fred, Baros. It wouldn’t have improved Lyon’s winning chances, I think, but it would have at least given “purpose” to the defeat : Bodmer would have had a run in midfield, Delgado and Crosas would have been given a start, Paillot, Rémi (and Mounier, on the bench) would have valuable L1 experience… And Fred and Baros would have had a chance to settle who’s the #2 striker.
Instead, Perrin is scared. He introduced changes too quickly and at a strange moment (against Barcelona), without considering what players he was fielding (they were all used to play in a 4-3-3, so reflexes came back…). Now, when he could be taking risks because of the injuries, he’s scared to make any change, and is sticking to 4-3-3 even though he hasn’t got the players to make it work properly.

i think i know why lyon want to get ederson. kk or bodmer aren’t good replacements for juninho who is supposedly thinking about ending his career at vasco.

Wow! for a front line
Ederson-Toulalan-Kallstrom-Ben Arfa
Benzema-KeitaEverybody needs to understand that Govou is a no show sometimes, he is a dumb player he does make rookie mistakes that he should not make

ROOKIE mistakes?

Come on Ray remember at Stutgart he missed a cleared shot at goal one on one with the goalie!!! Same thing at Ibrox, he was extremely lucky that he got another chance at goal after that. Thats what I mean about rookie mistakes. Questions?

Quit hating, I almost wrote Govou off last year, but this season Govou has four assists, and has contributed to a lot of his teammates assists, through keeping possession, and some serious movement. So what if he missed two chances on net, those were both really big games that we won. That assist to Kallstrom, during the Stuttgart game, was beautiful. Even if he is a no-show some games, this season he’s had maybe 5 or 6 really off games, out of a good 30, which were probably from overplaying, or just a random bad day. Not saying he can’t be replaced or anything, but I don’t really care if he isn’t.

OL and Juve are agree about Boumsong. He’s in Lyon right now, and will probably sign his contract today or tomorrow. I think I’ll play for the derby.
