Little Pieces of News
By: Inara | September 15th, 2007Sorry for the deluge of posts, but now that international week is over, there is suddenly so much to write about. I’m also in a strangely buoyant blog mode. I think it was because I went to see Brazil play Mexico a few nights back, and having finally fulfilled one of my life’s ambitions (seeing Kaka score), I don’t feel like doing “real” work anymore.
Gossip and/or minor bits of news:
* Marseille is suing Francois Clerc and demanding 3 million euros in damages. The story behind this is that in February 2006, Clerc, who would have been out of contract that summer, signed a pre-contract with Marseille, and then a few weeks later, accepted a contract extension with Lyon that doubled the wages Marseille were offering him. The LFP cleared the transfer at the time, but Marseille appealed, and for various reasons the outcome of this decision has been delayed for nearly two years. New court date is January 22, 2008.
* Damien Plessis, a former CFA player, who went to Liverpool on deadline day, said that he “wasted” two years of his life at Lyon. Plessis, who never made a first team appearance for Lyon, decided that if he is going to play in the reserves, he might as well do it at Liverpool. Which I totally understand, because obviously the EPL CFAs > L1 CFAs. Damien, I wish you the best of luck in dislodging the 19 other midfielders at Liverpool, but at the end of the day, you weren’t asked to play on OL’s senior team because you weren’t good enough.
* Karim Benzema is currently the best striker in L1. He is also the youngest person ever to occupy the top striker spot. ::hearts Karim::
* I was alarmed to discover that the Rodrigo Palacio to Lyon rumors are still alive, despite the fact that the transfer window ended just two weeks ago. I personally don’t see Palacio as a solution to any of Lyon’s problems, and in fact he might increase them because he would be the lone Argentine among five Brazilians. But what do I know?
* Another Argentine that Lyon have their eye on is Ezequiel Lavezzi, who is currently playing with Napoli.
* LOLZ at the latest Fred rumor. Apparently, Lyon will offer Fred + 15 million euros to Roma in January, in exchange for Mancini. Umm…haha? This isn’t the first time that Fred was linked with Roma (he pissed off Aulas last year by offering himself to Roma so he could get away from Sylvain Wiltord). I know Lyon wanted Mancini, but why would they trade one of their few strikers to add another winger to their ranks? And it would be stupid to do so in January, when both players will be cup-tied. So for those of you hoping that the rumor is true, sorry, we are still stuck with Fred for a while.
* Gerard Houllier has been awarded the post of Technical Director of the French Football Federation (a post he’s occupied from1989-1998), which means that he’s in charge of all national levels (it also means he’s Raymond Domenech’s boss). Houllier is the long term replacement of Aime Jacquet, who retired last year. And he will be earning a shitload of money.
* Check out the new format of The Offside. The blogs are now divided by league, which you can find at the top of every page. The France Offside is pretty sweet.

Are you calling Benzema “Benz”? Ridiculously funny. Maybe we should adopt it

Benz is still how we call Karim here in Lyon
I always said “Benz”
was so strong and so good. As good as fred, but with an bigger potential ! I’m so happy for him right now…
I’m really happy about today victory. That will make very confident every ol players against barca.
They all played well, scored a lot, juni scored on free kick, Hat trick for Benz, come back of Ben Harfa, first match for Anderson, and Vercoutre did a very good match !
And we’re second of Le championnat.
Eveything is well. I love it !Posted from

Grrr I am jealous of you being able to see the game.
I wasnt able to.
It is great that Juninho scored on a freekick, he will be full of confidence for Barca.
This game was perfect. I love our 2 young strikers, I’m sure they will compete for the golden ball in a few years time.OK, I say it: I see us win at the Camp Nou.
Ok, it’s no Metz, but on current form we are better than Barca.I want Lyon to remind Europe they are one of the best teams in Europe. It may also shut a few mouthes of ESPN’s commentators. ;).

re: the Brazil-Mexico match
This is me, hating you. How early did you have to leave to get there in time? We started out at 6:30, and got to Gillette at 10:20…exactly as the match was ending. Judging by the amount of traffic on I-95, we weren’t the only ones screwed there…As for Lyon-Metz, at the rate Benzema’s going, he’s got the meilleur espoir sewn up already. But I’m especially thrilled for Ben Arfa–nice to see him back on track after all that time wasted under Houllier… Hopefully we’ll see him join Nasri on the national team soon (and the same for Menez).

TrezBenz is the striker Domenech should be using for France.Jo, Scott - I love your optimism. I’m afraid to get too optimistic though (if only you had seen me before that OL-Roma match…). But when I write the Barca-Lyon pre-match, I won’t be negative. And Barca have lost at home before, so OL do have a chance.
glatisant: I left Copley at around 6:45. I got on I-90, then took I-95, then got off on exit 15 for Rt. 1. It still took me nearly two hours. The traffic was horrible on Rt. 1 and on I-95. I drove in the breakdown lanes for most of the trip (I am a very fast and risk taking driver, so I cut around so many cars and got sweared at every five minutes). I almost parked at a McDonalds on the road because walking would get us there faster. Anyway, I missed the first half and got into my seat as the second half started. Oh, and I was stuck in Gillette’s parking lot for THREE hours before I could get back onto the road.
Gillette did REALLY bad traffic planning. Even the Superbowl is more organized.

There are everything to be optimistic.
I’m not saying we will beat Barcelona 3-0, but it’s obvious Lyon is well, now. Even if we lose against Barca, I’m happy of what is OL in this beginning of season.
And for Wednesday, I bet on 2-1 for OL, with a difficult win
