Liverpool vs. Lyon, aka Pjanic Time

By: Inara | October 19th, 2009

Pardon the super cheesy title, but after reading Miralem Pjanic’s super inspiring interview this morning, I felt…well, super. Lyon are in first place in their CL group, Liverpool are in the unwelcome position of being in third, and both teams are coming off of weekend losses in their domestic leagues. Both sides are also riddled with injuries to key players, and both were coached by Gerard Houllier.

Match Background:

I don’t care what EPL fans say about how winning their league is more important than progressing in Europe, it’s crucial for Liverpool to at least qualify for the knockout rounds, or else he’ll be short 20 million euros during the next summer transfer window. So even though Liverpool have a massive game against Manchester United next weekend, you can bet that all of Rafa Benitez’s attention will be on tomorrow’s game. Unfortunately, that puts OL in a tougher position – instead of facing a somewhat complacent team, they’ll have to face extra determined players. For Liverpool, it’s imperative that they win all their games at home if they want to keep their dreams of qualifying alive.

Lyon, obviously, have different plans. Claude Puel has his own tough schedule to contend with, with matches against St. Etienne, Marseille, and Liverpool again within the next month, so for OL, the sooner they can earn those 11 points (which is about what we’d need to safely qualify for the knockout stages), the better. But before we get into all that, let’s talk about those Reds.

Their season so far has been lukewarm at best, and having lost their last three matches (to Fiorentina, Chelsea, and Sunderland, respectively), Liverpool have fallen seven points behind league leaders Manchester United. Rafa is desperate to get things back on track, and he’ll be hoping that tomorrow’s game, which is at home for them, will be the place to start. I’m not going to talk too much about them, since as a club, they are fairly well known, but for those who are like me and therefore completely ignorant of football outside of France, I’ll just touch on some of their key players.

Team captain Steven Gerrard is probably the one to watch out. A Liverpool youth product (crazy, I know), he has a ton of European experience and even a CL trophy under his belt. For a midfielder, he gets quite a few goals, both from in the box and from a distance. Javier Mascherano, who was out for a while due to injury, is back to full fitness. And let’s not forget their goalkeeper Pepe Reina, as well as Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel (whom Lyon almost bought a few years ago), who can be potent goal threats. Also of note is the presence of Damien Plessis, a Lyon youth product who left France two summers ago in search of more playing time. As for their coach, Rafa is no slouch in the tactics department, having maneuvered Liverpool to two CL finals, one of them which he won. He’s known for extensively researching opposition teams down to the last detail (and perhaps too strong of an attachment to the concept of squad rotation…).

Currently, they’re in 8th place in their domestic championship, having accumulated 15 points. They’ve notched five wins and four losses, having scored 22 goals and conceded 13. In the Champions League so far, they won their first match against Debrecen thanks to a single goal from Dirk Kuyt, and they lost their second game to Fiorentina thanks to the crazy powers of Steven Jovetic.

Going back to Lyon, Puel will also be hoping that the weekend defeat to Sochaux – the first loss of the season – won’t put a damper on the momentum Lyon have gained over the last two months. Juggling with injuries has made things tough in recent weeks, but thankfully, Lyon’s main rivals have been having problems of their own, so the L1 title race is still wide open. Right now, Lyon are tied in 1st place with surprise package Montpellier. Bordeaux are a point behind in second while Marseille are three points behind (but in 5th place). OL have won six games, drawn two, and lost one, having scored 15 goals and conceded 7. Their performance in the CL has been good so far, with two wins out of two, six goals scored and none conceded.

Tomorrow will no doubt be a tense match for both sides – Liverpool fearing their chances of qualification and Lyon needing to convincingly win against a big team abroad. The two clubs have never played each other (not even in a friendly!), but instead of being nervous, OL players are excited because they’re visiting a stadium they’ve never played in before. The Champions League is all about magic, so let’s hope we’ll see some tomorrow night!

Team Info:

The big question mark leading up to this match has naturally involved Liverpool. Both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres picked up groin injuries during international week, but while Gerrard was able to shake his off, Torres will be missing tomorrow’s match. Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Alberto Aquilani will also be watching from the sidelines as they recuperate from knee and ankle injuries.

Le groupe de Liverpool: Reina, Cavalieri – Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Insua, Aurelio, Dossena – Benayoun, Riera, Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Darby, Plessis, Spearing – Babel, Voronin, Kuyt, Ngog

So there is some good news and bad news if you are a Lyon fan. The good news is that Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos are back. Cris has also shaken off last week’s injury scare, and Jeremy Toulalan is still healthy and as-of-yet unsuspended. The bad news is that Mathieu Bodmer, Jean-Alain Boumsong, and Cleber Anderson - three of Lyon’s four CBs – are still out. To make things even more unbelievable, the usual defenders whom Puel calls up from the CFA team are also injured. Sebastien Faure, Nicolas Seguin, and Thomas Fontaine are also out.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the real reason Lyon never sign any defenders because that position on our team is cursed.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Cris, Réveillère, Clerc, Cissokho, Kolodziejczak – Toulalan, Källström, Gonalons, Makoun, Pjanic, Bastos, Delgado, Ederson, Govou – Belfodil, Tafer, B.Gomis, Lisandro

Besides Timothée Kolodziejczak, Puel doesn’t even have any replacements for the missing defenders. Maxime Gonalons, Ishak Belfodil, and Yannis Tafer will also be accompanying the senior team, but don’t expect any of them to play.

Expected Lineup:

We’ll definitely be seeing Jeremy Toulalan partner Cris in central defense. On the right, I expect to see Anthony Reveillere, and on the left, Aly Cissokho, who has turned into Mr. Champions League. In the middle, Kim Kallstrom was rested over the weekend so that he would be fit for tomorrow, as was Miralem Pjanic, who only came on towards the end of Lyon’s game against Sochaux. Those two are logical starters to accompany Jean II Makoun, who will be the lone DM. There is also the possibility of utilizing Francois Clerc in right midfield, but I don’t think it would be wise to chance it, not if it means we have to sacrifice Pjanic.

Up front, it’s the deadly trio (who weren’t at all deadly last Saturday) of Lisandro Lopez, Bafetimbi Gomis, and Michel Bastos. The only change I can imagine is if Puel drops Gomis to put in Clerc at RW.

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Toulalan – Cissokho
Pjanic – Makoun – Kallstrom
Bastos – Gomis – Lisandro

Viewing Options:

Ironically, now that ESPN no longer has Champions League viewing rights, the usual English domination of CL broadcasting has ended, as Fox Soccer Channel makes more of an effort to show games from a variety of leagues. Which means that Lyon will not be broadcast live in the US. The only way to watch it live is if you A) live in another country with better broadcasting rights, B) subscribe to DirectTV, Sportsnet Ontario, or Skysports HD, or C) are actually going to Anfield. Otherwise, you can wait until 10 PM Eastern time for FSC to show the match on tape delay.

OR, you can foray into the unreliable world of streaming. You can try to find a working here, or you can chuck out $10 and buy one from UEFA.com. Hopefully you’ll be able to find a good stream, as this is one of the bigger matches tomorrow. Remember, sharing is caring, and if you find a working stream, please share!

If you’d rather skip out on the streaming drama altogether, you can follow along on liveblog. Both Football365.fr and Lequipe.fr will have good ones, as will the OL website, where you can also follow along with free audio commentary – though be warned, it’s all in French. (About an hour before the match, I’ll update this section with the links to the liveblogs.)

Expected Result:

Even without Torres, Liverpool are a dangerous side to face with a lot of attacking threats. And it’s not like Lyon have the optimum defensive cover. BUT…I think Lyon can manage to get at least a point out of tomorrow’s trip. The most important thing is for the players to keep their cool and not allowed themselves to get intimidated by the stakes.

In lequipe.fr, there is an article about yesterday's heroe Maxime Gonalons. I didn't know that in summer 2008 he got a bad leg infection (Staphylococcus aureus) and the doctors were talking about amputation! After 3 months of an intensive antibiotic treatment (15 pills a day!) he was able to save his leg and his career.
He was great yesterday and I am really happy for him he scored. I wish him a great career!

  • KeLT27

    AAAAAA!!!!!
    Unbelievable!!!
    We won yesterday on Anfield!!
Just incredible match! How much emotions! We on the top in the group with max points!

Yesterday we played as one TEAM. There were some mistakes in the defense, but, as you remember, after 1 substitution we played with 2 DM in central defense.
Best players of the match: ALL!
But I want to emphasize some:
    - Lloris - BRAVO! Some fantastic saves!
    - Toulalan - yeah, he is very nice defender)
    - Gonalons - 1 goal in CL and in WHAT MATCH!
    - Govou - he was beautiful today(I mean his dribbling and tactics)
    - Lisandro - the fastest player yesterday, who just plowed from beginning to the end of the match.

Next match: with Nice. Guys, please, don't start to walk in Saturday's match).

Next match with Liverpool. Draw will be nice, but as a fan of Lyon, I always believe in victory.

  • mrCham

    We should buy Mikael Chretien

  • Aleksander

Well, Inter we are stronger than :D

  • Megame

About Cris: looks like he finally flew back home with the rest of the team. Good news for someone who, immediately after the blow, asked Toulalan where they were...

  • Sam

Aleksander - we'll just get drawn with Inter to make up for it :p

  • Megame

The news about Cris, 3 hours after the injury, seemed reassuring. He got hit (by accident) by Kuyt's knee, but the hospital apparently ruled out a cervical vertebrae problem and confirmed he hadn't lost consciousness. Still Puel wasn't sure Cris could take the same flight back as the rest of the team.
Could this injury lead Aulas and the staff of the necessity to use the winter transfer window to find a suitable defender unless we want , having injured or worn out all defenders and DMs by the end of the season, to have Kallström or Pjanic playing in central defense!

  • sideny govou

    how bad is Cris injury???

  • Aleksander

Great match! I can tell I started screaming too, sitting there together with 2 liverpool supporters :) Let's win this group and for once not meet the eventual CL winners in the first knockout round. Semi's we should atleast reach this year =)

  • Aditya

    Yesssss...you guys did it!

  • Ronald ---> Shadow

sdzsdz - if what you said is true...then your officially Awesome. lol

  • Sam

Ha, tonight was unbelievable. I watched the game with a Liverpool supporting mate and I was moaning for ages about our horrible defence and how embarrassing it was that Gonalons was playing there - and then he scored! Amazing - really incredible.

We dominated the second half, and I'm so proud of how we did - deserved the win. Lloris, Toulalan, Govou, Kallstrom and Cissokho all put in great performances. I'm so unbelievably happy about the result. Lyon made me so proud tonight. Now, to buy a centre back!

Lloris' save from Aurelio(?)'s header was magnificent.

I have to say I feel Ederson is almost turning out to be as big a waste of money as Keita. I feel he provides really little to the team

  • Ed

    Well done tonight.

  • mrCham

Both substitutes scores. Puel is an effing genius

  • lefutur

    how did Lisandro play today?

  • Megame

Delgado seems to be used This year by Puel a bit like Mounier was last year, but with far more effectiveness.
Funny, also, that Puel didn't use Michel Bastos...
And I'm just puzzled as to why Ederson started.
Anyway, I guess after such a win the coach is not to be criticized...

  • Flash

Megame: Toule will score in the next match for sure, that was just the begining

  • Flash

Wow, what a win. Was lucky to see the match on TV.
Lloris is the best goalkeeper in the world!

  • Megame

Have you guys noticed that it is a shot from la Toule (on target)that led to the first goal? OK, he's still cursed as far as direct goal scoring is concerned, but ... could this be a step to the end of the tunnel?

  • Matt

OMG! What a sweet finish! The team played with confidence despite being a goal down and with defensive problems, Puel's halftime speech must've been something special. ALLEZ LYON! A draw at home in 2 weeks time and we're through to knockouts.

  • mrCham

    sdzsdz : hahahah!!

  • John

    I can't believe what I just saw!

  • corpuscle

    Gonalons..............what!!!!!!

  • mrCham

    YEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!

  • Jao

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • Jao

Nah, we've been attacking from the onset. Once Cris got concussed though, in the 33rd or so minute, Puel switched it up.

  • John

What's the backline now? I can't tell with this crappy stream.

  • mrCham

    Gonalons have good offensive attributes

  • mrCham

    Gomis in

  • Jao

Gonalons completely missed that one. Goog thing N'Gog was rushing his shot.

  • Jao

We have to play in a defending mode. We're practically playing three at the back. Gonalons is back there, but he's no CB, not even close.

  • Jao

    Super save

  • mrCham

    Wonderful save by Lloris!

  • mrCham

I hate Benayoun and have always hated him. I knew he was gonna poke it in that son of a gun!

  • Stanley

and we have no center back....

  • Jao

    Makoun at the back. LOL

  • Jao

    Ugh.

  • mrCham

    ASIFJASIOFJ!!! DAMN!! Not fair man!!

  • mrCham

Were are all the defensive players????

  • mrCham

    OMG!!!

  • mrCham

    Well played so far

  • Jao

What a cross and chance. Crap

  • mrCham

    We need a chatroom

  • Is there going to be any chat room for this matchup?

  • Does that midfield seem a little lightweight to anyone? I know Le Toule has to play in the back, but Makoun and Kallstrom to me could have trouble coping with the Liverpool midfield pairing. Hope they can maintain possession to allow Pjanic and Ederson to do some damage.

Also, as good as Sid has been this year, I think Bastos may have been a better option with his speed and long range shooting providing a different element to the attack.

  • Jao

Lloris in goal, usual back four, Pjanic, Kallstrom, and Makoun in midfield. Ederson and Govou on the wings and Lisandro, all 5 foot 8 of him, up top alone.

  • Aleksander

    What's the lineup?

  • Jao

    hmmm....Ederson starting. Interesting.

  • John

I think Bastos and Delgado are questionable.

  • mrCham

Can I get a ALLEZ LYON!!!!!

  • Jao

I have a feeling we are going here to get nothing more than a draw. A win, probably in Puel's mind, would probably just be an added bonus. If we score first, we must score again because I don't see us holding on 1-0. Also, interesting that its an all Spanish referee team

Speaking of Pjanic, supposedly Europe's elite will all be watching him tonight. On and Inara, the match will be broadcast live in the States.

  • Sam

No supporters say the Champions League isn't important - let me tell you that. It's considered the biggest thing, and English teams in recent years have tended to pretty well in it. Liverpool are an unpredictable team - you never know what you're quite gonna get. Sometimes they're very average, but sometimes they can tear apart the best of teams - take last year's 5-0 aggregate (I think?) v Madrid. I really think we stand a good chance, but our defence never inspires any confidence so I find it difficult to predict. I think we'll probably lose 1-0 or 2-1 with Gerrard putting in a great performance as he always does.

  • Aleksander

Can't w8 for the match! Since I can't watch it directly on the TV, i've bought a stream and going watch it from the computer and on to the TV, together with 2 friend..Liverpool fans xD I'm so gonna laugh at them if we win! =D BTW, I neither like the Idea of Lisandro alone on top, would really like it better if he played LW, but I'm sure he can do it! Bastos have to start, he has this game-changing factor

  • It is important for EPL teams to go as far as they can in the Euros. Otherwise, they would just blow it off, which they don't.

Besided the fact that they speak English, the only reason the the EPL teams are popular in the US and around the world is because of how they do in European play.

This explains why the big four are the only jerseys you see people wearing here in the States. When was the last time you saw an American wearing a friggen Portsmouth jersey? I'll tell you...never!

That just proves that the Champions League and European competition is important, not just to EPL, but to all European clubs. Back when PSG was considered the top club in Europe (from 1994 to 1998), I saw more PSG jerseys at the local soccer stores. Now since they have slipped, you don't see them as much.

Only the people that follow soccer closely (like us) realize that Lyon has won Ligue 1 seven times in row. While that is all nice, winning the CL would do a lot more for Lyon and their marketing worldwide than those seven championships.

So, yes, the Champions Leagues is important. EPL supporters just say it isn't in case their team falters. It is a backup plan.

  • alan clark

I also think govou will start the game tonight, his experience in the champion's league will be very precious! On the other hand I don't like to see Lisandro alone, I like when they play together with Gomis. Maybe Bastos could start on the bench.

  • Matt

If only we had a 2nd CB so Toul could play DM and shutdown Gerrard, if that were the case i'd be extremely confident in a win. As it is, we still have a strong chance. L'Pool have a lot to play for, but Lyon can almost guarantee qualification with a win tonight (6 points clear with 3 games remaining including what should be a win over Debrecen).

If the team plays with the passion they carried up until the Fiorentina game then there's no reason they can't win. Allez L'OL!

  • yaniv

very nicely done.. Very informative.. But i think more than d personnel, d side which can play with more intensity ll win.. Pool need 2 win, NEED 2 win.. No doubts.. But lyon seem well placed.. Looking 4ward 2 it.. Pool seem lyk they cant attack at all.. Lets c if d pressure ll make em diamonds or shit..

  • Dror

having watched a few of Liverpool's last matches, without Torres and Gerrard they play like L2 side - seriously.
since Xavi Alonso left their midfield is filled with holes and both their full backs basically manage no defense at all.
as the match takes place at Anfield a draw would be great, but don't be so shocked if we snatch a win, Liverpool, just like Milan, is nothing but a "big name" this season.

  • Megame

    Superb preview Inara, well done.
Without Torres but with ever dangerous Gerrard, I also think (and dearly hope) we can at least get a draw.
Have you considered Govou on the pitch and Gomis on the bench?

  • Aditya

I demand revenge. Liverpool got better of Marseille and big brother Lyon now has to clean up the mess! Let's save internal battles for weekends only.

Is Govou injured too? If not how come Clerc is ahead of him in RM department?
