Lyon Aren’t Being Very Friendly
By: Inara | June 27th, 2008
Just the other day, the LFP published the summer schedule of friendlies for both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 clubs. Nearly all of them will be busy this summer – Marseille have nine friendlies planned while Bordeaux have a respectable five (fyi, PSG will be playing against Porto in August – fun). Even the promoted clubs have jam-packed schedules.
But not Lyon. Claude Puel has decided to scrap summer friendlies for the club so that he can spend more time getting to know his squad while also focusing on fitness and training. With so many OL players on vacation until July 15th, Puel doesn’t want his players traveling around in the pre-season unless they absolutely have to. It’s why he canceled Lyon’s US tour (thereby ruining my chances of seeing them this summer).
As of now, the LFP lists only two friendlies for Lyon: against Dinamo Bucarest and Nimes Olympique while there also are rumors that Lyon will play against FK Partizan on July 23rd. Except the date for the Bucarest friendly hasn’t been decided yet (which means it probably won’t happen), the game against Nimes will probably be canceled, and the Belgrade friendly hasn’t been mentioned by anyone except the Serbian press, so…
…I’m not sure if these friendlies will really happen because Lyon themselves haven’t confirmed any of these matches. Unlike all other clubs, Lyon suck at posting this sort of information on their website and haven’t even mentioned anything about their summer schedule. I had to verify the date of Lyon’s first day of training on PSG’s website, which is pretty damn sad (pean8ts thoughtfully provided the LFP’s link to L1’s summer reprise). Still, we’ll do our best to keep you guys updated on our end.
I’ll be going home for the next week or so, but John will be around to make sure you get enough Lyon dosage. I was going to leave you with a post about Ben Arfa’s departure, but since he hasn’t left yet, I’ll hold off until he really does.

I don’t know, for me it’s better that they don’t come to the US so now I’m forced to go to France. Even though the Euro is going to kill me. And I have a sneeking suspicion I’ll like Lyon more than Portland- beautiful city that it is. Also think I’ll have a slightly better meal in Lyon.

The food in Lyon is amazing. Some of the best in the world.

I just feel that in friendlies, players are a lot more accessible than in competitive games. Especially in a place like Portland, where the number of Lyon fans going to that match (even the general fans) wouldn’t be a huge amount. Much easier for getting autographs and pictures and maybe even chatting them up for a minute.

don’t worry… most pre-season friendlies are organized at very short notice sometimes only a couple of days ahead. they’re almost always played in small venues in towns that don’t get much big-time football, never in lyon anyway.
