Lyon End Up Scalping Bordeaux, Benzema Is Irresistible
By: Inara | October 7th, 2007Karim Benzema scored his tenth league goal of the season in Lyon’s 3-0 defeat of title contenders Bordeaux. And guess who provided the assist? Hatem Ben Arfa. It should also be noted that the referee wrongfully disallowed another Benzema goal though it was clearly over the line. Had that counted, Benzema would be up to 11, which is three goals shy of Pauleta’s tally from last year. Pauleta, by the way, was L1’s top scorer last season.
I don’t care that scoring for Lyon isn’t the same as scoring for Juventus. It’s obvious that we in France are witnessing something special every time Benzema is on the pitch. And though he’s under contract until 2012, I cry for the day when Real Madrid show up with a bid that Aulas won’t be able to refuse.

Lyon’s match away to Bordeaux this afternoon was supposed to be a lot more difficult than it turned out to be. But for some reason, Laurent Blanc’s men didn’t show up until the second half, when they finally started putting Lyon under pressure, increasing their intensity in the last ten minutes – but by then it was too late. Lyon’s other two goals were scored by Anderson and Kim Kallstrom, though Jussie managed to net one for Bordeaux.
So Lyon won, and in their gold kits they already looked like this season’s champions. Which just goes to show you how weird Ligue 1 is. Lyon are sitting atop the table but have yet to collect a single point in the Champions League, whereas Marseille are one spot from the bottom and yet are the only team in their CL group (which includes Liverpool and Porto) with the full six points. Bipolar disorder, anyone?
The Goals:
Besides Benzema showing us once again how amazing he is, the other great piece of news was Fabio Santos, who was unquestionably man of the match. A solid, steady presence in the midfield, he ensured that Lyon didn’t miss Jeremy Toulalan at all. And considering that I’m a big fan of “La Toule,” that’s hefty praise from me indeed.
Hatem Ben Arfa put in another good match, though in the second half he faded slightly. He was fast and tricky – all he needs now is to bulk up so that he can muscle past the few defenders he can’t avoid. In fact, the entire squad looked good out there, which makes me wonder how the hell Lyon went from looking shitty against Rangers to looking almost like the team they were supposed to be within a four day span.
Maybe Alain Perrin is the bipolar one.
And speaking of deep, psychological problems, I noticed that once again, when Juninho was subbed off, he gave the captain’s armband to Kallstrom – despite the fact that Sydney Govou, Lyon’s most senior player and former captain, was still on the pitch. Hmm.
Anyway, that’s it for now. I’m short on time and won’t be able to do a full match analysis – so please dear readers, fill in for me!

Seeing as how boy wonder Samir is under the weather right now, id say its more probably that Real swoops for Benzema this summer then Nasri. Id take Ben Arfa too. They are both very special players.

Good points after this match:
- Benzema is great.
- Anderson has a really nice potention, even though he made a big defensive mistake (again).
- Fabio Santos proves he deserved to be bought for €4.2m.
- Ben Arfa can play very well as a winger when Benzema is a center back, to then they can switch positions.Bad points:
- Santos and Grosso easily lose their temper.
- Govou still has a lot of difficulties scoring when in front of the goal keeper.
- Ben Arfa forgot several times his teammates when attacking. And also, I wonder who will be sent off the group when Cris, Coupet and Toulalan are back.
Here are our 20 top class players (18 can be chosen for each match):
Coupet, Vercoutre – Squillaci, Reveillere, Clerc, Grosso, Belhadj, Cris, Anderson – Toulalan, Santos, Bodmer, Juninho, Kallstrom – Ben Arfa, Keita, Govou, Benzema, Baros, Fred.Posted from

I added goal highlights to the post:)
Corey: I know I can’t expect Benzema and Ben Arfa to remain at Lyon forever, but it would be nice if they hung around for a few more years. Though with big clubs being so greedy, I don’t know. I was reading today that both Juventus and Chelsea have their beady eyes fixed on Karim.
Salieri: Agree on your points. It seems every match now that Grosso is fighting with someone on the pitch. I don’t know if it’s because he’s short tempered (he seems like such a nice guy) or if people are mean to him on the pitch (he is Italian after all).
I’m happy about Fabio Santos. Jo was very very right that he just needed a chance.
As for who will be asked to take a back seat, Vercoutre for sure. In fact, he’s welcome to find another club. I think it’s about time Lyon invest in a real #2 that can be a genuine Coupet replacement in a few years time.
Also, Anderson will probably be around for most of this year, since Cris won’t be back until February at the earliest. And even if he does return then, it will be a while before he regains full fitness. Then afterwards, it will be up to Squillaci, Cris, and Anderson to fight for a starting spot.
And I think Toulalan will still start ahead of Fabio Santos, though I hope that Perrin will rotate them more often.

All I really want is for Ben Arfa to get lots of playing time. That’s why the Mancini rumors are stressing me out – unless Govou or Keita leave.

“Sydney Govou, Lyon’s most senior player and former captain, was still on the pitch”
No he was not. He was replaced by Bodmer 20 minutes before. Juninho never gave the armband to Kallström while Govou was on the pitch.

Oops, my mistake. I didn’t really notice Govou all match anyway. BUT the reason I thought so was because during the Lens match, Juninho gave KK the armband, despite Govou being on the pitch at the time. I noticed it because I remember the commentator pointing it out. In fact, I don’t recall Juninho giving Govou the armband at all this season (though correct me if I’m wrong), since Toulalan has worn the armband for many matches as well.
The reason I’m pointing this out is that Govou should technically be the recipient, as opposed to KK and Toulalan, who have only been at OL for one year.
I guess not all is peachy between them!

Against Lens, Govou wasn’t on the pitch either…

Wow, my mind is definitely making things up (it’s four in the morning over here). I think this is a sign that I need to go to sleep. Though I know the broadcasters were talking about Govou’s diminished leadership role since Perrin’s arrival at Lyon and how he is no longer deputy captain.
I think I need to do some research on this and see Juni’s substitutions and where Govou was on the pitch. Has he been captain this season at all? I don’t remember. Cris, Muller, Juni, Toulalan, and KK are the only guys I can remember with the armband so far. That’s a project for tomorrow.

Maybe I’m the only one, but I’m pretty sure Lyon will qualify in CL. We have the team. We just need to believe in it.

You are the only one. ATM, Lyon’s good form in Ligue 1 doesn’t seem to mean anything at all when they play in the champions league

Jo, you are not the only one. Stuttgart is the easiest team to play for us. I already said Rangers would be a pain for us (we always struggle against those 9-1 formations) although I didnt expect us to lose in Gerland but in Ibrox.
I think Lyon “will” (I should never say will after Barca and Rangers) win twice against Stuttgart. And by then we may have found our belief again for a win vs Barca.
I said 4 weeks ago I didn’t want Lyon to play the qualification in the last game, but I think that’s what may probably (hopefully) happen. Rangers will have the edge anyway in Ibrox. All in all, it is going to be tough, but I don’t mind Lyon not qualifying as long as they play their attractive football. (but if they play their football they would qualify).
Can’t wait to see Fred and the 2 ben play together. Hope it’ll be as good as it sounds on paper.

i also see qualification as possible… a tough row to hoe but definitely possible.
govou ran with juni perfectly and made a good shot; he’s not the only player to lose a 1 on 1 with ramé these eleven years. and i think the two are closer than ever, the brouhaha was a good thing in that way.

Jordo, I don’t say that because of their win in Ligue 1. I see, and analyze their way of playing for a long time now.
I see the evolution of the mentality, and the way that Perrin begin to understand what is really OL. We can beat Stuttgart 2 times, and be confident against Rangers, but not TOO confident thanks to our lost 3-O at home. About Barca, at Gerland everything is possible… And I believe Stuttgart can beat Rangers in Germany.
We can qualify. We just need to believe in it.
I know Aulas repeat “UEFA cup” three times / hour, but that’s just to anticipate, “au cas ou”, for OL stocks buyers. He doesn’t want a rough fall of OL stock. Nothing else.Posted from
