Lyon vs Bayern : Suspense? What suspense?

By: Megame | April 27th, 2010

Alea jacta est. So be it. Olic 3 – Lyon 0. Lyon are groggy for having tried to punch above their weight. We all are. For one week, we convinced ourselves that our team on their day could beat anyone, we granted ourselves the right to dream against the odds, to hope that a magnified team spirit would sublimate our team, to pray for the redemption of a group who did disappoint. Alas.

In a game that bore many more similarities to the first leg than we hoped, Lyon looked a bit more committed, showed a more offensive face, and controlled Robben better; yet they were less dangerous and more exposed, as the team was stretched, the defense got progressively depleted and the threat was coming from the other side tonight. Other than that, with again a well organised Bayern, technically superior and dominating possession, occasionally guilty of defensive mistakes which Lyon were unable to exploit, the ingredients were much the same as in the first leg, including the utterly debatable booking which changed Lyon’s game, at a moment where their imprint on the game was the heaviest, and which, here also, neutralised Puel’s coaching, as he had already replaced a defender by a striker..

I will try to find the motivation for a post match analysis. But more than the reasons of this painful experience, what matters now is what will happen next. Will players and staff find the resolve to fight for the third spot in the few games left, or is the spring broken? Will Aulas analyse the results versus expectations and take radical decisions, or will he consider that after all we’ve reached a new level this year, so that it’s an evolution that’s needed, not a revolution? Will disappointed players like Lisandro, Hugo want to stay longer, and even so, will they be that committed? And will the club keep its fans, having already lost about a quarter of the season ticket holders this year?

Bernabeu looked so remote tonight...

lol...pYn.fcB , dude i dont know what u mean by "ours". I am loyal to FCB and nothing/no one else, hence i dont need to be associated with you or anyone else. Likewise, if you have read and understood anything Theo (and others) have said previously, i doubt you would be so passive as a Bayern fan. Moreover, if someone makes disparaging remarks about FCB i believe i have not only the right, but the duty to say something...

"HOORAY for the women. At least they showed up in their semi-final. Wonder if the match will be on TV."

Yep on OL TV and Eurosport
Aulas will be so happy if only we win...

"Mandanda wants man united!" Megame, don't you have said that we want constructive (and realistic) contributions?)

MrCham It is about the spots allocated to each country. As you know England for example have 4 spots. 3 direct and 1 indirect. According to your results in the competition, your country goes up and down the scale. If we keep on having teams in the semis and quarter (not just Lyon), we may eventually be granted this 4th team alocation. Thus the importance of a competitive Ligue 1

  • Hey I didn't get this 4 spots for CL thingy I read recently... 1-3 place = CL guaranteed, while 4th place needs to qualify? Can someone confirm?

    Allez Lyonnais!

  • Jao

Match against Montpellier is taking forever. Got to get that Bayern match out of my mind. Creteil won on Friday (five points within Troyes with three left to play for anyone interested), hopefully Puel's boys can cap off the weekend.

Love the irony Megame... Still, I would leave Anderson a chance (the one he was never really given).

  • Megame

Great news, for tomorrow's game against Montpellier the loss of Delgado will be more than compensated by the selection in the group of Cleber Anderson (in terrific form since he hasn't been injured in the last 10 days)and the world famous Alexandre Lacazette.
This Top 3 spot is ours for sure I tell you. Champions League 2010-2011, here we come ! ;)

  • Nikhil Apte

O yeah, and Italy has already been pipped! I guess the 4th Champions League spot between Germany and Italy will go to the winner of the Champions League!

  • Nikhil Apte

I don't think he was thinking about the World Cup then, John. He must have had enough time to think of that when he was on the pitch waiting for the ball.

France has enough competition to need a fourth Champions League spot now. 10 points gap, in another 4-5 years?

  • John

I love Lilo, but we have to ask if those tears were for not getting to the CL final or the world cup?

Such a sad and disappointing moment for Lisandro. :(
After he left his heart and soul on that field he deserved so much more! I really hope he stays in Lyon. He's easily become my favorite player in our team. Such a talent, such a fighter.

  • Haha +1 ^

  • muffin

Although that's a big crap it could've been crappier :D Imagine if Lisandro is out for the rest of the season, and having Gomis as our 1st striker! Now that would be crap!

Guys, please ignore Bumy[FCB-4L]... he's a troll. He's def. noy one of ours.

  • Nikhil Apte

Yeah! I'll be happy if Mandanda is preferred by vulture clubs over Lloris because Lloris won't be easy to buy. :D

Bumy [FBC-4L], congratulations to Bayern on going one step ahead and into the final.
Just how the hell is Bayern going to get past Inter though?
Also, its time you switched over to http://inter.theoffside.com/ and find Inter fans walking all over you. :)

  • Bumy wtf?

Needed a perfect performance, that sounds like Bayern is a way better team and thats just not true. I dont get this man. He is the only reason why Lyon failed.

Sounds like Puel will be at Lyon next year.

I am still pissed off that we lost against Bayern. We have beaten Real or Liverpool and knocked out players like Kaka.Gaynaldo,Gerrard,Torres,Gourcuff,Casillas etc. and than lost against Contento, Badstuber, Muller...WTF. I also think that it is a shame for the whole UEFA that such a team plays in the final of the CL.

Some positive news, Lyon will participate in the Emirates Cup 2010 so I will finaly be able to watch my two favourite teams playing against each other and it is a friendly too. Celtic and Milan will also play.

  • muffin

lol..Bordeaux must REALLY be pissed off. They'll be happy if they finish in top 5 ;D I'm only fearing of Lille, Montepellier and Auxerre for our podium race. And we have a really good chance of putting Montepellier out it this weekend, they're in a such bad form. But Auxerre and Lille have been playing very good lately. It's gonna be a tough one with them.
Oh yeah, good read Yahya...I could totally see what they're talking about when I remember the look on Lisandro's face yesterday. And the hyped up game face he had before the match - straight KILLER look! Too bad our team failed in just about everything to feed him right and make use of this killer instinct he has. I'll be so sad if he decides to leave this summer and considering this season, who knows, it's not that unlikely.

  • Valenciennes just scored against Bordeaux ... this means we could really have a opportunity to get up to 2-3 place. Never stop believing!!

    ALLEZ

  • muaz

The team shud gain their confidence back if they want a place for next season's CL. They have only the league to concentrate to and i can see lyon go to the 2nd spot in the league if they win as much because Auxerre have a tough battle incoming... let's just hope for the best!
i was disappointed to see lyon lose last night, but come to think of it, lyon had fought hard to go to the SEMIs for the first time, beating many big clubs, especially the first team to have knocked out an English team this season. Let us just cherish this moment.

  • Guillaume

I'll be honest! I left after Cris got sent off! I love watching Lyon play and would do no matter how bad they play, but to have another decision in a game as important as this was awful. I hope Aulas takes a look at whats going on around him and as soon as the season is over replace him as manager!

  • I have rarely watched Lyon play, but watched the last 2 CL matches. Noticed Lloris seemed to flap very badly on corner kicks. Is this the norm for him, or basically just an annomolly?

  • fatalure

the team play really bad tonight. they always lost the ball. again, cris did many mistakes. bad defensive and midfield. there is no support for lisandro. he always get down to get the ball.
