Lyon vs Bayern – The day Lyon missed the plane. Badly.

By: Megame | April 23rd, 2010

Dear fellow readers

Two years or so that I had been hiding at the back row of the OL Offside classroom, until a few of you (shame on you) noticed it and reported it to Mistress Inara. So I had to come forward, bow and pledge allegiance to the noble cause of the Olympique Lyonnais.

To impress and start with a bang I thought I would make a real nice article on Gonalons yellow boots; but then I couldn’t manage to search and get the size right. So I thought I’d be easy with myself for the first post and take a lighter topic to start with, like the first CL semi-final in Lyon’s history. So here we go, folks.

__________________

I don’t know about you, but 3 days after the game I still have a sour taste in my mouth. A taste of disappointment, for the epic battle we were expecting didn’t take place; a taste of shame, for our heroes didn’t behave as such; and a taste of puzzlement, for I just didn’t recognise my team.

Let’s make it clear right away: Bayern’s victory suffers no debate, and they should be congratulated for a great football display. On OL’s side, all is not completely lost: Lyon are conscious to have missed their match, but will be pleased to have contained the red waves and to only concede one goal. That leaves them with non negligible chances to turn things around next week.

Caramba, the guy is getting taller by the minute!

Caramba, the guy is getting taller by the minute!

It all started so well. The first minutes gave the tempo, with a lot of pace and energy from both sides. Bayern progressively taking hold of the ball, Lyon trying to stay cool and organised. That was quite a challenge, with both Robben and Ribery immediately signalling, with lightning fast dribbling, that they were here on a mission. Even defender Van Buyten , present in the OL box and kicking the first attempt at a goal, made no secret of their intentions.

Yet, for all these threatening moves, Bayern didn’t manage to be more dangerous than a Ribery shot, finally wide, and an Olic attempt, which he missed. Lyon’s defensive organisation was starting to be well in place, and, bar a couple of misjudgements from Hugo, – finally without consequences, but showing that even the most mature and cool-headed youngster can be affected by the importance of the game-, one could feel OL was regaining some control on the game. On several occasions they could bring the play to Bayern’s territory, creating decent chances: some Pjanic free kicks, a good shot from Ederson that would have been a nice goal without a deflection from a Bayern player.

But the game was soon to take an unexpected turn : a few minutes after Cris tackled him in a firm but correct way, which will have frustrated him, Ribery committed a late and high tackle on Lisandro, who seemed hurt. Having watched the scene Mr Rosetti immediately showed Frank a red, adding with this tender gesture the final touch to a dream week many of us would be envious of.

I can't believe how lucky I am, I must be dreaming

I can't believe how lucky I am, I must be dreaming

With Ribery gone, a whole new game was starting for les Lyonnais. Bayern’s offensive power would diminish, so Lyon would be able to use their numerical advantage and progress to the midfield. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. Bayern continued as if it was Lyon who was missing one man; and Lyon didn’t get many more chances, except a typical Kimissile from 30 m, which Bayern keeper Butt (what an inspiring name!) managed to stop.

At half time, both teams had reasons to hope. Bayern, considering their impressive possession, had good reasons to hope they’d be able to break the gridlock; and Lyon, considering they had had the more shots on target, had reasons to believe that they’d be able to multiply them in the second half, as Bayern’s waves of attacks of the first half would eventually calm down, allowing them to regain control, shift the block higher and progress towards Butt’s cage. How wrong they were.

On the contrary, the little offensive intent from OL one could see in the first half simply vanished; a first shot on target from Pranjic sounded as a warning; with only one shot on target from Delgado in the second half Lyon progressively ceased to exist offensively. Bayern was therefore growing in confidence, players like Lahm started going outside their half; then came Robben with a 25m shot which Gonalons avoided and Muller’s head deflected into the net of a surprised Hugo Lloris. But the N°1 french keeper didn’t miss another Robben shot a few minutes later.

Then came the sequel, “Unexpected turn II : red is back”, when a cocktail of bad referee viewing position, inspired acting from Schweinsteiger, and pressure to balance the penalties count between both sides, sent Toulalan go check his text messages in the locker room.

There's a Hollywood guy over there who'd like to hire you for Karate Kid III

Midway through the second half, when Lyon usually ignites the second stage of the OL rocket, leading to these trademark high-octane last 15 minutes of the games, they realised there was no fuel left in the tank. From then on Lyon players must have been frequently looking at the clock, as the rest of the second half was going to be very long… In the meantime, Bayern, also a late gun salvo specialist, kept on pressing,; Van Gaal brought Gomez in to try and score the second goal that would have better secured the prospect of a trip to Madrid. It’s not by lack of trying, but this wasn’t to be. And, despite an 89th minute shot (wide) from Govou, the end came like a liberation to the OL squad.

So, what to take out of this game?
Like Barcelona, Lyon weren’t recognisable, like the shadows of themselves. One can’t help but think that the travel conditions played a role in the sub-par physical condition as well as the largely perfectible tactical and emotional preparation for the game. Bayern looked like themselves in a good day, remained organised so their much advertised defensive weaknesses didn’t show. And the absence from team captain Van Bommel didn’t seem too much of a blow.

Is Puel to blame?
I can’t help but feel the players let Puel down, as what he expected from them was to play like against Real, pressing Bayern high and hard, blocking the wings to avoid them developing their game and feeding Robben and Ribéry; and the instructions were to try and score at least once. That’s why he had sent Gomis warming up, to help Lisandro try and keep the ball more at the front; so he was about to substitute Bafe for Pjanic, when Toulalan started collecting yellows like daisies on Mother’s day. As a result, defence becoming the priority, Puel sent Makoun instead of Gomis in the midfield, and Gonalons slipped backwards to fill in for Toulalan.

But what the players did was NOT what Puel wanted. He never instructed them to leave 70m between Lisandro and the last defender. He never instructed them to hide in their 30 m. And with his famous never say die mentality, it’s obvious he would have hoped for more fighting spirit, too. And more ball retention. And therefore a better passing. And… And…

At this point of my ramblings, whatever consideration you guys may have had for me as a potentially OK poster is long gone, so I might as well go on and share my utterly subjective and profoundly autocratic views on the players performance.

Bayern:
What a performance from Robben! The best player on the pitch without a doubt. His right wing buddy Lahm also had a great game, combining with him to become a real threat without exposing his side. Demichelis managed to neutralise Lisandro, Van Buiten kicked off Bayern’s artillery campaign and, a few mistakes aside, put in a decent performance; Pranjic had a good game, if all Lyon players could only pass half that well…Schweinsteiger progressively found his marks and ran a marathon, and we could see how right Luke from the Bayern Offside was to warn us about Contento’s attacking potential. Olic did try hard but his game will be summarised by the golden opportunity he missed. As for Ribery, he had a very promising start, but I guess his nerves betrayed him. The substitutes had mixed performances: good for Tym… no, Tmush.., I mean Olic’s replacement ; lacklustre for Gomez, and ,in the end, a short but promising appearance from Altintop.

Lyon:
What can I say… More than individual performances, the collective shortcomings are the main factor for this disappointing display. Be it physically (unusual lack of endurance, the frantic defensive effort of the first half costing dear in the second half), technically (passing seemed a daunting task for Lyon players, and a breeze for Bayern), tactically (lack of lucidity, inability to isolate Robben from his midfield, loss of cohesion, position way too low) , or mentally (Lack of fighting spirit, lack of commitment, lack of self confidence ).

Still, with regards to the team composition next week we should examine individual performance:

  • Those who sunk :
  • Pjanic, with hardly any impact on the game; Ederson, a nice shot but that’s about it;

  • Those who stayed afloat:
  • Lloris, with several hesitations in the first half compensated by stopping Robben’s and Pranjic’s shots afterwards; Réveillère, who suffered a bit in the first half but got better in the second; Kallström ran like crazy but was technically poor; Makoun missed a few passes then decided he would be better off running after the ball for the rest of the game; Lisandro tried hard to do what he could without the ball, but he was slower than usual; and he was well taken care of by fellow compatriot Demichelis and by a Bayern backline that had quite a bit of time free for that,; Delgado worked hard both offensively and defensively but didn’t dare much. Toulalan was well in the game, probably too much. On Robben’s interception he acted as a midfielder and not as the last defender, with an unexcusable foul. The second yellow wasn’t deserved, though. Govou brought some animation and danger on his wing. Bastos tried to do something, but with little effect overall, and earned himself a booking.

  • Those who managed to swim:
  • Cissokho did have a few useless crosses nobody could exploit (as giving ball away seemed to be the name of the game for Lyon players) but he should get credit for a remarkable and clean defensive performance against Robben, where others would have fetched 15 yellow cards; and Robben’s goal occurred when Aly wasn’t in charge of covering him.. Cris has been solid and reassuring throughout, but couldn’t find energy for his usual forays into the opponents half. Gonalons was pretty effective in midfield, a bit less so as central defender. But why, o why, did he shy away from Robben’s shot (apart from the 200 km/h, that is)? We would all be cheering about the great 0-0 Lyon brought back from Munich..;

    The referee
This usually well regarded referee has a particular style : lenient on minor fouls, harsh on major ones. Hugo Lloris will remember how he got sent off with Les Bleus against Serbia, with a penalty on top. And Benitez had already noticed in 2008 that, with Rosetti at the whistle, home teams have a very clear advantage.

    The public
The public started off in style with an impressive and colourful animation just before the game started. With such an massive support the Bayern players had a 12th, 13th and 14th man on the pitch. And Mr Rossetti had a huge pressure on his soulders to make the “right” calls, too. With a nice 3000 or so Lyon supporters, however loud they have been it was never going to be easy in front of 66.000 others, and it hasn’t been. Let’s hope for the opposite next week…

And believe it or not, that’s THE END of this summary ! (the rest of my post should be available soon, the first 20 volumes are under the press as I write these lines)

Sincere congratulations to the 3 people who will have read this far, and I still hope to read your views on this game!

Definitely Cris will play. Puel has no option, and I can't see Cris chicken out of a CL semi-final in Gerland even if he is injured.

    • Theo Walcott 14

Yeah Aleks, knowing Puel Lyon will play very defensive in the first half and then start to attack if needed in the second.

    • Aleksander

No way Puel will be taking risks offensively, the best we can hope for is that he starts both Pjanic and Ederson as midfielders.

It's very true Auxerre probably wouldn't be able to perform on both the CL and the Championnat... Now we face the true impact of our months of absence after such a promising start of the season. We can only blame ourselves...

Regarding tuesday, it seems that the usual "info or intox" game is taking place, so that DVB, Demichelis and Cris are in their group and could play...

    • Pride of Lyon

Now that Auxerre and Marseille have won Sunday's game, it seems we will be fighting for 3rd place with Lille...
Next weekend's game against Auxerre is crucial. If we win it, we may still be able to take second place... If we lose it, I am afraid we are out of CL.
The problem is I don't remember last time Lyon won a Ligue 1 game just after being eliminated from CL. Therefore, we can't afford to lose on tomorrow.

    • Matt

Just read that Tymoschuk is out for the 2nd leg. If DvB and Demichelis are both out then Bayern's defense will be a shambles.
      Lahm - ??? - Badstuber - Contento

LVG will probably be forced to start at least 1 of the 2 injured CB's. Either way the Bayern defense is going to be shaky and we can definitely exploit it. Despite Bayern being in a great position and with some great attacking talent I still feel optimistic about this game.

or idk...maybe ederson instead of kallstrom to put more attacking pressure..or with one defender less and gomis in..I'm really eager to see what will Puel come up with.
This will be one very tough game. Almost certain we'll see a penalty on one side :D Maybe we'll see lost of goals although considering playing styles of both teams it's not that probable but this will be one very different game. Allez l'OL!

WE BEAT REAL MADRID 1-O @ STADE DE GERLAND L'OL LETS GO TO PENALTIES keeper against keeper BIG MOUTH,,,,,,,,, WE @ THE GERLAND ONLY TIED ONE TEAM LIVERPOOL who seems to love france. BAYERN is terrible on french soil and i quite remember zenit beating u guys badly last year in uefa cup.Ur team only has gotten worse since then except robben and I highly doubt he would have scored if pigclimber or pigfarmer did'nt do a 360 scream a rooo then 10 seconds later get up fine . FC bayern luckest team since france ........ poor Ireland

That was worse then revaldo's world cup ball in the legs then covering his face.,. CHEATING ON SUCH A LARGE SCALE MAKES ME SICK

    • Matt

Boumsong should be back. Afaik he was back training before the 1st leg but failed a late fitness test.

    • I rather see Chelito and Licha on top.

      Makoun-Gonalons
      Källström-Pjanic-Ederson
      Licha-Chelito

      Anyone with news on Boumsong?

    • Matt

That's that big dilemma for Puel. Does he start Gomis or an extra midfielder? Gomis is great at drawing defenders and creating space but without service he'd be useless. We need to be able to get the ball past van Bommel and Schweinsteiger.

    • Pride of Lyon

If I was the coach, I would try an outrageous tactic just to tempt Bayern. I would try and play a 3-5-2... We don't have any fit defenders, so we should reinforce the midfield and play with 2 DM's.
Gomis + Lisandro up front is a must if we want to show with have balls to play for the win.

Of course, I am aware the 3-5-2 is an outdated tactic in most cases, but I do believe it could work in this particular case. Bayern will play on the counter.
Last time I saw a team play in 3-5-2 was Marseille when Tapie came back for a few months.

    • muffin

Bayern had a tough game at Mönchengladbach. They almost lost the game. We'll see how will that reflect on their game in Lyon physically and morally. And I really hope Puel won't be so stupid again to order some defend-and-go-for-the-goal-after-the-75th-minute tactics. He doesn't have a choice really. We must attack from the 1st minute. Any lineup opinions?

    • Theo Walcott 14

And we will beat Bayern fair and square in the second leg and than win the final. Allez Lyonnais... ;)

    • Bumy [FCB-4L]

LOL. Since this is a futile exercise this will be my last post. I dont know what was doutable about the first goal, it was a good cross from bastian, good header from muller and olic did well to not only hold off his defender, but to kick the ball across VdS. The other two goals were down to creating pressure, if we werent terrorizing Neville he would have no need to handle the ball in the first place, and deflected freekicks score ALL the time. Are u tell me wen Lyon scores them u say its lucky as well?
And surely its pure luck for Gomez to attract 4 defenders to him, and Olic stealing the ball simultaneously beating 2 defenders, and faking VsR to score. Pure luck i tell yah.

And for the last time, could someone PLEASE look at Jovetic's first goal and tell me in what position Gilardino was in before he passed the ball? I'm not sure what it is, but something about 01:20 looks strange...
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

My point is that when Bayern scores its "luck" and they're still inferior, but when the opposition scores, they're good. Fiorentina and ManU were eliminated fair and square. Lyon got beaten fair and square, everyone needs to get over that.

P.S. Kudus to megame for his reply

    • Dror

we'll, while the 3-2 lose to MU was the most impressive game Bayren played in this year's CL, and deserve full credit for it (despite first goal being slightly doubtable ), you just can't ignore the other 3 matches. the 2-1 win at MU was nothing other than pure luck, watching the absurd goals is enough to understand that. and as for Fiorentina, they're fans canted "Thieves Thieves" at the end of the 2nd leg, and while it's not Bayern's fault, everyone who has seem both matches knows the reason.

as both teams look, it seems rather obvious that the winner of the other match will take the final, but if Bayern do reach the final, i don't think anyone can say they were the better team through out they're knock-out matches (well, if 2nd leg looks anything like the first, you definitly look better than us, tough.)

    • Bumy [FCB-4L]

I didnt exactly say its futile to hope, i just said what i expect to happen. Like i could say if we make the final and play Barca i expect to lose, but if it were Inter i think we could win.

The last time i checked, i never insulted Lyon in any way, i just focused on my own team's strengths. I just find it amazing that no one has given the team credit. Maybe a bit of research will help in that regard...tell me the last time a team (whether in the league or Europe) went to OT, were 3 nil down before HT and STILL got a favourable result. Patiently waiting for the answer...

    • Nikhil Apte

      Oh yes, great post, Megame!

    • Nikhil Apte

Lyon had 7 yellow cards, out of which 6 have now been cleared. Bumy [FCB-4L] , do you really think the game at Stade Gerland will be the same as in Allianz Arena now?
Lyon kept a clean sheet against Real Madrid at the Gerland. I don't see any reason to not do it again.

    • megame

Also, thanks guys for your comments on my first post!

    • megame

Anicho : thanks, good to see common cause and mutual respect prevail over individual quarrels.

Bumy : I also think it will be difficult to keep Bayern scoreless, eventhough that would make it so much easier for Lyon. And it's also true we haven't scored more than two goals since February, if we leave aside the first quarterfinal against Bordeaux where we scored a penalty kick. So 2-0 will be difficult, and a 3-1 as well.
But then, this is no ordinary game, we saw in the first leg how unexpected twists (an exclusion, an injury, a penalty kick) could change the course of a game; also, we saw how the weight of the event on Lyon's shoulders and the massive support Bayern enjoyed could push things one way; I hope we see how the same factors inverted can push them the other way, and how a cornered team can sublimate itself.

    • Bumy [FCB-4L]

Oh, and not to say that this will happen as i cant tell the future, but i just realised that we've scored in every Away game so far. Three in Israel, one in Bordeaux, four in Turin, two in Florence and two in Manchester. Even though conceding only three in six home matches is impressive, the way i see it Bayern only needs to score once, which will require Lyon to score three. No disrespect, but even with our temperamental defence, i find that unlikely...

    • Bumy [FCB-4L]

LOL. I wonder if mikep realises that scoring 2 away goals in the knockout rounds (a feat that Lyon didnt accomplish) is actually pretty good, and most times help u to progress, as against Fiorentina and ManU. Needless to say then i'd GLADLY take 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 etc. losses.

And muffin, all i've been hearing since the Fiorentina match is that we've been lucky. Lucky all of 5 games in a row? Surely thats unlikely...one, maybe two, even three, but never five. For sum strange reason i feel it has more to do with performing well...

    • Anicho.

We(BDX) don't like you very much and you guys sure as hell don't like us, especially after the last match But good luck anyways. the further you go the better it is for french football.

    • Sam

Results went our way this weekend. This season has astounded me as SO many times this has happened and you think - Lyon it's now time to take the initiative and make a huge push. If the team played anywhere near it's full potential we could have had this league nicely wrapped up a while ago - but still we might not reach 3rd!

3 ridiculously big games against Bayern, Montpellier and Auxerre coming up. Hard to see the team pulling through really, but if there's a time to show how good a team we are - now well and truly is it!

    • Dror

Dont count on football gods, in case such exist, they are definitely on Bayern's side, just watch they're campaign so far ;p

    • Megame

Well, it seems Uefanysos (or whatever god is in charge of football) has decided to be fair: Cris may be uncertain, but so are Van Buiten and Demichelis, both with a calf problem after tonights game. So we might see Timosomething and/or Badstuber on tuesday...

    • Pride of Lyon

We really have to hope Auxerre starts to lose ground. We have a crucial game against them coming. The 2 CL spots left (after Marseille that is) will be played between Lyon, Lille and Auxerre. Don't think Bordeaux can come out of this one, something just broke in their team.
My prediction : 1- Marseille, 2- Lille, 3- Lyon... that's because I keep optimism high.

The ligue1 did us a big favor by postponing Monaco. We would probably have lost this game if we had played it this weekend.

Oh, and of course, great post Megame, I am sure more than 3 of us read the whole article ;)

    • John

Crap, Lille won. At least Montpllier drew and Bordeaux lost.

    • John

Montpellier are also 0-0 in the 60' min. Lets hope the scores at least stay this way, but hopefully Lille, Montpellier and Bordeaux all lose. Then all we need is an Auxerre loss and the table stays the same.

    • muffin

Woah! Le Mans scored a tie and Lorient is leading 1-0! This could be great for our battle for podium!

    • muffin

Of all the teams battling for the podium in Ligue 1 so far only Lille is leading 1-0 against Le Mans. Hopefully Lorient will give hell to Bordeaux and Montepellier isn't looking good recently either so they may end up getting only 1 point from this match. Hmm...it would be great also if Le Mans scored a tie but it's a long shot. We'll see...Still 45 minutes left after the break.

    • Wai

      Nice read.

And we must really DESTROY Bayern in the return leg, no excuse this time ! We are the BETTER team !

    • wikman

i rly think we "dominated" real overall, at stade gerland they barely got any good chanse at all and at bernabau they only created good chanses in the first half, while against bordeaux i thought we created alot more chanses aswell even though tehy did too

    • Theo Walcott 14

      Great first post Megame ;)

I like your optimism guys, but to be real there is maybe a 5% chance that we will play in the final. We are playing bad the whole season. To be honest Bordeaux was better in both matches and Real could have had a 4:0 in the first half at Bernabeu. We are playing to defensive, even against much worser teams than Bayern. We just cant control a match. Is it just because of Puel or are the players not as good as we are thinking. Can we really attack at Gerland against Bayern. When was the last time we dominated a match. Maybe I am too pessimistic and I hope I am wrong but the chances that we go through are very, very small.

nice post ! :D ALLEZ LES GONES

    • muffin

Nice posting. Now when I look back I'm so disappointed we didn't manage to score a goal or keep a clean sheet when we could :/ Bayern got lucky again, with Toulalan's red card and with Robben's shot. But now it's all behind us and considering everything we have a good shot at home. Lisandro's pissed and that's very very good. Probably some of the other players hungry for trophies but not shouting so loudly are also pissed and are ready to march on Butt's goal. Oh yeah, and what about Boumsong? Is he going to be fit for the game or are we having a CB problem now that Toulalan's out?
This is going to be one very exciting game. Hopefully it's not ending 0-0 :D

    • BIM

So nice, it's a very nice post and I really enjoyed and agreed. Let's hope for revenge at home. Keep up the good work, please, I read it all. With a smile :-D

    • mikep

Bayern terrible away record lost in manchester lost in florence lost to bordeux twice .COME RALLY OUR HOME RECORD HAS BEEN PERFECT CEPT A DRAw AGAINST LIVERPOOL THE FIRE GONNA BURN BRIGHT BAD LES GONES

    • Matt

I think Puel can be held responsible for not attacking as soon as the 2nd half started. It seemed apparent to me that he wanted to keep Bayern scoreless for 15 minutes and then push for the win in the last 30 with Gomis coming on. His plan probably would've worked had Toulalan not been sent off, but why not attack and pressure Bayern straight away like we did with the Madrid 2nd half? Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity we were too scared to concede.

I'm still optimistic that we can put a solid performance in for the 2nd leg and then we'll see what happens. 1-0 is certainly a real possibility. It'll be tough but with the fans behind the players i'm hopeful.

    • Very nice post mate, I had to pause reality and focus :)
      Keep up the good work!
