Bayern vs. Lyon

By: John | December 10th, 2008

December 10, 2008 (I was thinking Lyon should adopt this as their new logo)
Match Day 6
Stade de Gerland
2:45p.m. EST(20:45 CET, 19:45 GMT)

At the rate Lyon’s injury crisis is going, I think the fans at Gerland should show up early and give blood before the match. Lyon’s roster resembles a battlefield medical hospital, with new casualties of war coming in by the day.
Wednesday, Bayern come to Stade de Gerland with a full, healthy squad looking to take first place in Group F from a crippled Lyon side. Although both teams have qualified for the following knockout round with 11 points each, there is still something to play for: top of the group, which historically is an edge in that the top finisher of the group usually has 60% more of a chance of advancing past the knockout rounds than the second place team. The reason for this is that the top seed recieves a home advantage in the second leg of the last 16. So both teams will fielding their best sides and taking nothing for granted.
After drawing 1-1 in their first encounter at Allianz Arena, these will be the the scenarios needed to take top of the group: Lyon have to either win or get a 0-0 draw. If the game ends in a 1-1 or higher draw, then Bayern will be first due to goal differential within overall group play.

Injuries: The usual suspects Bodmer, Pjanic, Clerc, and Reveillere are out, also Faure continues to nurse his knee injury, and the “Glass Ghanean” John Mensah injured his calf or stubbed his toe in training or something; he’s listed as “not certain.” Benzema seems to be a probable to play also, the only ray of light in this injury crisis, because we also lost one striker in Frederic Piquionne who pulled his right quadricep in the Nantes loss Saturday. And leaving the scoring up to Fred alone is not something I’m very optimistic about.
Both Juninho and Cris- I don’t know if Cris’ picking up a yellow on purpose was such a great idea now- will be out after picking-up yellow cards in the previous match vs. Fiorentina. Cris’ absence has caused a castastrophe now that Mensah is injured and it’s not known if he will start. With with four of our five CBs ineligible, the talk is of putting in either Grosso, Toulalan, or Dos Santos in the center back position. I think it will be Toulalan since we don’t have another left back and he has the best defensive skills of the three candidates. This center half injury crisis has really made me miss Sandy Paillot- who’s rotting away on the Grenoble bench right-about-now- and hell, I even miss Cleber Anderson if you can believe that. Needless to say, against a fully fit and hungry Bayern side, this could be a potential disaster.
I think Aulas is going to have to overstock the backline with players, just like the midfield in order to just get by.

Le groupe : Lloris, Vercoutre – Grosso, Boumsong, Mensah, Gassama, Kolodziejczak, Faure – Toulalan, Källström, Makoun, Fabio Santos – Govou, Delgado, Ederson, Keita, Mounier, Fred, Tafer, Benzema.

Lineup:

Lloris
Gassama-Boumsong-Mensah(or Toulalan)-Grosso
Makoun-Toulalan(or Kallstrom)-Ederson
Govou-Benzema(or Fred)-Delgado

I got this line-up from France Football since L’Equipe hasn’t as of yet posted their’s. I have a couple of issues with this line-up: First, if Toulalan does start at CB, then Kallstrom shouldn’t be in the middle of center field. He should go to the left and move Ederson to the right, with Makoun in the middle. And it’s interesting that Faure is in the group, but who knows if it’s just to fill a spot.

Unfortunately Jao, we most likely wont get any of those three, we will get someone who is a favorite to win or the incubent winner, its in our history.

well, im goin to class and be bored for a bit, might come back and give my thoughts on how ederson kept us in the game most of the time….especially 3-0. If that performance doesnt annoint him as Juninho’s succesor, i dont know what does.

Plus im think about what Ghislain said, and try to figure out what players lyon can pick up in the winter ( SB, CB )

This was truly an ASTONISHING match, I really can’t remember when I’ve watched a more interesting one! Yes, we got humiliated, yes, our defense looked chaotic and yes, we were left extremely frustrated in the end. BUT, I’m really proud to be a Lyon fan, extremely happy to see those men fight, bite and give them hell until the very end! This team has a fighting spirit and a never-say-die attitude, and ladies and gentlemen, I hope we all see and appreciate that! Allez Lyon!

ederson and pjanic is the future of this club, if we somewhat could manage to play with both of them when juni retires, then we would be saved. I do hope Juni can teach his mysterious free kick teqnique to ederson, then he’d be the true sucsessor..we should get horau or remy when benze leaves..

omg..i don’t know if i dare to say this, but i think we got lucky to loose, look at this guys: Pot 1: Roma
Panathinaikos Barcelona Liverpool Manchester United Bayern Juventus Porto. The only teams i really fear here is man u, barca and Lpool, the other teams we can beat..while in pot 2:

Chelsea Internazionale Sporting CP Atletico Madrid Villarreal Lyon Real Madrid Arsenal. Does any1 think the same as me?.. in Pot 2 we have chelsea, atletico, real, inter, arsenal and villareal, pot 2 is alot better than pot 1 on paper, so before we get drawn against man u or barca i consider ourselves extremely lucky. Maybe this is our year! ;P

    ….Alex just jinxed us lol.

Panathinaikos, Porto, Roma are the only teams i would like to face.

But i fear we’ll face Liverpool. And if i know my CL prediction history, we’re gonna get Liverpool.

That was such an awesome comeback – we definitely didn’t deserve to lose. The game was lost by the luck of Klose’s second goal, and the bad luck with the post/goal line clearances. It was a good showing in the second half, however I can’t see us beating one of the great teams with our defence as it is, Barcelona would simply tear us apart. Going forward we’re a menace for anyone, the British commentators were falling over themselves about Benzema.

As far as I see it – I don’t think there’s a great deal to choose between the 1st and 2nd placed teams. Us, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter and Arsenal are all 2nd seeds – pretty unbelievable huh?! However the away 2nd leg works in our disadvantage.

We better pray for Panathinaikos! The team that draws them sure is lucky as hell! If we put that dream-come-true aside, we could do well against Porto, Juventus, Roma and even Manchester United, while I won’t even mention the other teams – I jinxed us with MU last term.

Ronald : “Unfortunately Jao, we most likely wont get any of those three, we will get someone who is a favorite to win or the incubent winner, its in our history.”

2007/08 : Manchester United (eventual winners)
2006/07 : Roma (knocked out by Manchester United, in turn knocked out by AC Milan, the eventual winners)
2005/06 : PSV Eindhoven, then AC Milan (knocked out by Barcelona, the eventual winners)
2004/05 : Werder Bremen, then PSV Eindhoven (knocked out by AC Milan, who lost in the final against Liverpool)
2003/04 : Real Sociedad, the Porto (eventual winners)

Out of five times that Lyon has got to the first knockout round, only once was Lyon drawn against the eventual winner (2007/08), twice they were drawn against average teams (2003/04, 2004/05), and twice they were drawn against good teams that weren’t favourites (2005/06, 2006/07). In the Quarter-finals, Lyon have met one eventual winner, one favorite, and one underdog (PSV 2004/05), but given that there are only 7 other teams at that point, pretty much every club can be called a “favorite” to a certain degree.

where is inara? she hasn’t posted in awhile, I hope she’s okay.

i don’t know if you all saw, but juninho and cris are being fined by uefa for picking up deliberate bookings. every player does that now and then, i just don’t get why juninho and cris openly admitted it. that was dumb of them.

the bayern game was okay under the circumstances. I wasn’t expecting any better but a lot worse. Bayern are in peak form and besides lucio, not missing any key players. they also have a stable defense. they should be more worried about the two goals they conceded than we should be about lyon’s three conceded goals. at least we have an excuse…several excuses actually.

winning against bayern was pretty irrelevant in the end because it’s not like the old days when group winners would have a significant disadvantage. this year five of the eight top seeds are runners up. it would be hilarious if lyon got pana while bayern got inter or united.

the real test comes in the spring, and puel knows it. he’s just trying to make it to winter break with as little damage as possible.

lol maybe someone should remind roma fans what their form was like at the beginning of the season. and who knows what it’ll be like in march.

lyon’s injuries and form are currently so bad they would lose against small uefa cup teams. but if they get into good shape by late january, only barca and united frighten me. lyon have a very good chance against all the rest. pana, roma, and porto are the easiest draws.

Mari: I was wondering what happened to Inara as well. She’s pulled a “Bin Laden:” disapeared. She hasn’t responded to any of my emails. I hope she’s ok. If anyone know anything, please let us know.
And I’m kind of glad that all this is happening to Lyon early on, and hopefully we get healthy soon and there’s no where to go but up in the comming weeks and months, especially after the winter transfer window, when hopefully we should be getting more defensive help.

    Reactions…reactions…reactions…

    Jean-Michel Aulas
There were two matches within the match and we maybe lacked a certain amount of luck. It’s clear that the lack of experience at certain important posts, in particular up against Franck Ribéry who was outstanding this evening, made all the difference. When you are up against Franck Ribéry you cannot make a single mistake. You need to be extremely rigourous and need som eluck. We didn’t have much, as when you look at the stats we have nothing reproach the players about. We were just missing a bit of luck and efficiency this evening. We really wanted at least a draw as that would have permitted us to remain unbeaten in the Champion’s League which would have been good for our confidence. There are some regrets as I believe we deserved more than the 2-3 final result.

    Jean-Alain Boumsong
I don’t want to stigmatize the mistakes. There were some tonight, but that happens. I don’t want to dwell on the negative aspects, just focus on our second half performance which was very good and shows that we can react. When you are 0-3 down at home, you have to get on with things. What could be worse? You have to try and play and enjoy it, even if it is difficult. We were up against a Bayern side who showed a level of maturity that we should aspire to in our next few matches. In the first half they did not just attack willy-nilly, tactically they were in place and they played together. I want to be positive and say that we will use this type of match in order to progress. We have to learn from our mistakes. That’s my philosophy. Nothing happens for nothing, what happens will happen and we have to move forward with that in mind.

    Fabio Grosso
We wanted to start off well. It’s difficult to say but we did. We could have opened the scoring. Afterwards we conceded three and things got more complicated. At half time, we said to each other that we could do better. But as we always say, we will take the positives from the match.

    Ederson
Tonight Bayern were a bit more lucky than us, notably for their first goal. They hurt us but we kept on pushing and tried to create opportunities. It just didn’t want to go in. I lanaged to hit the post again! We have to keep trying and it will go in. We have to be more solid if we want to go as far as we can and be more efficient in front of goal. There are some regrets as we scored twice in the second half and had chnaces to equalise. It gives us something to build on as we saw that we were capable of pulling back.

    Claude Puel
It’s strange as we started off well enough, we had the first chances and then we were punished by three shots. Three shots on target and three goals. That hurt us as we didn’t feel that we had messed up our start to the match. In the last fifteen minutes of the first half we were all over the place. We came back in the second half with more structure and ambition. We felt that we had to win this second half. We pushed, we showed a lot of good things, even in the first half, I’m not disappointed. We put in a lot of hard work tonight.
