Lyon vs. Le Mans: Or, They Score More Goals Than Us

It’s a strange, strange day when a team not named Lyon not only scores more goals but has a better away record (gone are the days when Lyon were the best at everything). But what is even stranger is that it’s Le Mans flipping their skirt tails at us.

Yeah, I know, I can hardly believe it myself.

November 2, 2008
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
3 PM Eastern Time (21:00 CET, 20:00 GMT)

Match background:

Things have been awfully interesting in Ligue 1 lately. Bordeaux and Marseille are actually playing with some sort of regularity and are doing their best to keep up (though who knows how long it will last). Lyon on the other hand are so undecided on where they want to expend their energies – the league or in Europe – that they are in danger of losing control of both. Lyon also have an upcoming gauntlet run of games coming up in November, with two CL games, a Coupe de la Ligue knockout match, and league matches against Monaco, PSG, Bordeaux, and Valenciennes.

Le Mans are fortunate in the sense that they only have to worry about the league – they aren’t in Europe and they were knocked out by Rennes in the last round of the Coupe de la Ligue. So they can afford to concentrate 100% on this match.

Currently, Le Mans are in 8th place, but a win tomorrow would give them the chance to jump to 4th. They have five wins, three draws, and three losses, and they are the only team to be undefeated in their away games. They’ve scored 18 goals and conceded 13, and they have the third best attack in the league, after Marseille and Bordeaux (Lyon, incidentally, are in sixth place in that ranking).

They have several talented players, though the most well known are Gervinho, Anthony Le Tallec (he of Liverpool fame), Mathieu Coutadeur, and Yohann Pele. They’ve also got Fredrik Stromstad and Thorstein Helstad, both of whom are turning out to be very handy additions to their squad.

Lyon are in 1st place, and even if they lose tomorrow, they will still retain a one point lead over second placed Marseille. They’ve scored 16 goals and have conceded 8, so while their attack this season is decidedly midtable, they have the best defense in the league, which is all the more remarkable considering the absolute shambles that is their back line.

Problem is, Lyon have a very crucial encounter against Steaua Bucharest in three days, so the concern is not only keeping key players fresh but also keeping them uninjured. Puel will have a tough time balancing things out – both games are important, though one could argue that the CL is far more crucial.

Lyon info:

Miralem Pjanic is the latest in Lyon’s collection of players with long term injuries. Francois Clerc is still rehabilitating, and Mathieu Bodmer is at least three weeks away before he can even think about returning. The good news is that Sidney Govou is training once again, though it’ll still be awhile before we see him on the pitch. John Mensah’s muscle pull isn’t as severe as Bodmer’s, but he also will be out for at least a week.

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Grosso, Boumsong, Cris, Faure, Réveillère, Gassama – Toulalan, Fabio Santos, Källström, Makoun – Juninho, Ederson, Delgado, Mounier, Keita, Benzéma, Fred, Piquionne

Fabio Grosso has been deemed fit enough for tomorrow’s match, and Ederson, Juninho, and Hugo Lloris make their way back into the team after being out with various ailments.

Expected lineup:

Logically, one would expect Claude Puel to bench key players in order to rest them for the Steaua game, but he doesn’t always follow logic. It also doesn’t help that tomorrow’s opponents are dangerous and need to be taken seriously. Still, the following formation is what I would like to see for tomorrow:

Lloris
Reveillere – Cris – Boumsong – Grosso
Juninho – Makoun – Kallstrom
Keita – Fred – Delgado

I suppose Puel could give Lamine Gassama more playing time, but Anthony Reveillere has already been putting in back to back matches since the beginning of August, and I don’t see Puel changing that now, not when confronted by a goal-happy Le Mans side. I don’t see how else that defense can be organized, unless Puel chooses to bench Fabio Grosso (to give him more time to recuperate from his sore ribs), which means Gassama would play, with Reveillere switching to the right.

In midfield, Juninho needs to play at least part of the game because he hasn’t played in the last two weeks, so he’ll be rusty. But hopefully he’ll either be subbed out early or put into the game in the second half. Kim Kallstrom also needs some minutes. Like desperately. I also think only one DM would be sufficient, either Jeremy Toulalan or Jean II Makoun. Playing both three days before Steaua is overkill.

Up front, I think Puel will give Kader Keita another opportunity to show us what he’s capable of. In the middle, it could be any of the three strikers, though again, Karim Benzema ought to be rested. He can come on later if things are dire. I personally would like to see Frederic Piquionne play, but Puel seems to prefer Fred. On the left, it could be any of Ederson, Anthony Mounier, or Cesar Delgado. My guess would either be Ederson, who hasn’t played in two weeks and could use some playing time, or Delgado, who played well enough last week to deserve another chance.

Viewing options:

YES, this game will be on Setanta and Setanta Broadband. There should also be links here. And in case you didn’t know, Lyon has made live audio broadcasts available for free on their website, so you can follow along that was as well.

Expected results:

I’m going with a 2-1 win for Lyon. Le Mans have the quality to put at least one goal away, but Lyon should be able to do enough for the win.

No one. It’s probably a 4-5-1 now with Toule-Makoun-Ederson in midfield.

It looks like Ederson came on, and Fred is now lone striker. I guess Ederson is playing behind him, or he’s in left midfield.

Coutadeur looks terrific. If he gets the right opportunity, he could be a great player one day.

I think above all I’m happy for Delgado. He took his chance, and he did very well. He was the best player after Benzema I thought, though Toulalan also did very well.

Speaking of Toulalan, the commentators and guests on OLTV are going crazy over him. It’s “Toulalan is OMG so awesome!!” every other sentence.

Okay ! Just came back from Gerland, and read your comments.

SO much things to say, I don’t know where to begin !

I think that was … really … the BEST OL game of the season.
I mean in everything. Lyon players did exactly what they wanted. That was so terrific.
    Tonight gave me several orgasms.

    Defense :
Lloris (My rate : 7/10) didn’t have so much job. But he was there, everywhere we expected him to be. he did great.
Reveillere (7/10) has been strong. He didn’t really go up, no long run on his left side, but his defensive job was good. That’s what we needed in a 4-4-2.
Gassama (8/10) REALLY impressed me. My god, is he really 19 yo ? He kind of remind me Abidal (the OL one, not the french NT one). Fast, strong and good vision of the play. Fighting on his right side, I was very happy for him. He seemed to love his starting spot, and showed to Puel that Clerc and Reveillere can really be anxious.
Boumsong (7/10) has been very solid. He was the Boumsong we saw last January, when he’s arrived from Turin. We all LOVE that Boum.
Cris (9/10) : OMG ! You won’t believe it… CRIS IS BACK, BROTHERS ! He’s been the one. THE Cris. No need to argue more. When I say Cris is back, you totally understand which Cris was on the pitch tonight. My God that’s so good to see.

    Midfield :
Toulalan (11/10) : I’m sorry, I know I become Inaraesque, but Toulalan was so… PERFECT. that’s the word. He succeed to shut all Le Mans midfield up, was everywhere, took the ball something like 90% when he tried and had a vision of the play so perfect too, with excellent passes and everything. yes, I was like the TV commentators saying to my friends in Virage Sud “Mais putain quel match de Toulalan ! Il est énorme ce type c’est phenomenal” each time he touched the ball. I think La Toule really was the man of the match. Inara, be proud of your baby.
Juninho (8/10) : He’s the Juninho we know. He know everytime exactly what he must do, never wrong, always fighting on balls, and he scored ! He scored a goal with such a calm… that was magic. He took time where almost every players would have shot instantly and maybe not score. Juni is our God. Again.

    Offense :
Keita (7/10) : He really tried and succeed beautiful technicals things, dribbled and speed up very well. I think he made a lot tired Le Mans defense. I just regret he still lose the ball too easily. But the Lille’s Keita seems to be back game after game, so we have to be confident.
Delgado (7.5/10) : What a game for his first 90th minutes this season in Ligue 1 ! Cesar has finally understood the European way of playing, and seems to be more strong than when he arrived (but he still has a lack of physic). He was interesting, fighting all the game, passing, dribbling, running to make spaces, and didn’t lose the ball too often. Like Keita, he made Le Mans defenders tired. Happy for him, he ca be “Messiesque”, sometimes. Still need to progress and to work, but he found the road. I think Puel showed him the road. Now, he just have to follow it !
Fred (8/10) : We are near the Fred we used to know 2 years ago. Very strong back to goal, very technical and great passing (especially to Benzema). Fred didn’t score, but he helped Benz to it. When Fred want, Fred can. Tonight, he wanted.
Benz (9/10) : You saw his goal. So you know. Benz is OUR legendary striker. He scored an impossible goal, made by himself. He really scared Le Mans, that was clear on the ptch. He’s Benz. He’s ours. :)

Man I really enjoyed tonight. An attacking team which play together, up pressing, good defending, united and determined. THAT OL, guys, can really do everything against anybody.
But will we see that OL again ?
    I terribly hope so.

Would anyone else claim Benzy to be the best striker in the world at the moment? I can’t think of anybody that can match what he’s doing now, it’s like watching Thierry Henry in his heyday. A lot of people argue that he hasn’t competed in a high enough league – but his champions league scoring record says it all really. One or two people on a Fulham board last week we were telling me ‘he’s average at best’… How wrong they were. Stupendous goal from him today.

Gassama really impressed me, he played better then even I (who hypes up our youth team players alot) expected him too. I think he is more then Ligue 1 ready, if he can add a bit more adventure in his attacking displays then he will be ready for the big games. But he was so solid defensively, with a number of great tackles, especially keeping Gervinho quite when he was brought on. Also, althogh I like Makoun, Mathieu Coutaduer ran the show today for Le Mans, and although Toulalan overshadowed him, I really think he would be a solid purchase in the future.

Thanks for the detailed report, Jo! I’ll be watching the game tomorrow afternoon, so I’m glad to know there is so much to look forward to.

Judging from the L’Equipe ratings, Fred, Keita, and Gassama were Lyon’s worst players, but from the comments on this site, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I guess the OL media skeptics (so eager to see Lyon fail) were out in full force tonight.

Yes, I’ve seen L’equipe rates. I cannot understand about Gassama. For Fred and Keita, why not, but Gassama deserve a really good rate. And Lloris too. I know he hadn’t much to do, but to me that’s not a reason to have a bad rate. It’s more difficult for a GK to be good when you have only 3/4 interventions in a game than when you are always in the rush.

Jo I agree it was a great match and a great atmosphere at Gerland but my god the weather. For a full 20 minutes the wind and rain made it really tough. Not sure if that showed up on TV but it took a lot of stamina to play in last nights match.
I agree that l’equipe was tough on Gassama though I wasn’t as impressed as you with Fred or Keita. And for Lorisn l’Equipe never give high marks to a goalie unless he’s kept really busy (and when the Lyon defence works that makes it tough for a Lyon goalie!).
But Cris, it was SO good to see him back on form, the only thing I missed from his former days were those charges down the left wing and straight for goal. But that will come I’m sure.
Now its fingers crossed for Wednesday.
