Lyon vs. Nancy, Or: Pretending not to care about Bayern

By: Inara | September 26th, 2008

Claude Puel says that the only game he’s thinking about is tomorrow’s game against Nancy, but we all know he’s lying because next Tuesday is Lyon’s crucial match against Bayern Munich, a game that Lyon need to get at least a draw in if they want to keep their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16. So the question is, which Lyon will show up against Nancy? The seven times French champions or the pod people masquerading as the seven times French champions?

September 27, 2008
Stade de Gerland, Lyon
1 PM ET (19:00 CMT, 18:00 GMT)

Match Background:

It’s perhaps safe to say that Nancy aren’t the team they used to be two seasons ago – or even last season, for that matter. Pablo Correa built up a great side using old fashioned ingredients like team work, good coaching, and smart recruiting, but like all French clubs, Nancy saw their best players leave once they gained enough attention to merit a move.

In their 19 previous visits to Lyon, Nancy have walked away with a win only three times, and the last was in 1990. Lyon won 16 of those encounters, and there was a single draw back in the seventies. However, it’s also notable that despite losing at the Gerland for their last several encounters with Lyon, Nancy manage to keep the scoreline 1-0 (raise your hand if you’re surprised).

Currently, Nancy are in 13th place, with one win, one loss, and four draws. They’ve scored as many goals as they have conceded (four). This is obviously not the bright start that Nancy were hoping for, though that’s due in part to the departure of their two best players last season, Sebastien Puygrenier (who decided to jump ship for Russia) and Kim (who bizarrely chose to go to Qatar). But they did manage to keep hold of Michael Chretien and Gennaro Bracigliano, a terrific goalkeeper that doesn’t get noticed as much as he should.

Read more from Nate, who has a preview up on the Nancy Offside.

Lyon are currently in first, and with a four point gap over second placed Marseille, the club knows they have some space in which to operate. With the Bayern game coming up hard on the heels of the Nancy match, Puel is going to have to find a way to sort his priorities. Luckily, while the rest of the league was involved in the early round of matches for the Coupe de la Ligue, Lyon could take a breather because they have a bye until the next round.

Lyon info:

John already wrote up a detailed injury update, so I won’t repeat it here, except to say: WHY CAN’T LYON BE HEALTHY FOR FIVE SECONDS????

Le groupe lyonnais: Lloris, Vercoutre – Mensah, Réveillère, Gassama, Cris, Boumsong, Bodmer – Källström, Makoun, Toulalan, Pied – Mounier, Pjanic, Ederson, Piquionne, Fred, Benzema

Cesar Delgado, Kader Keita, and Fabio Santos will be playing with the reserves this weekend, as will Timothee Kolodziejczak. Sidney Govou is suspended because of the stupid red card he picked up last weekend against Le Havre. Though I suppose in hindsight this is a good thing because at least Govou will get some rest. Hmm, maybe Karim Benzema should pick up a couple red cards himself, in that case.

Expected Lineup:

Lloris
Gassama – Cris – Bodmer – Mensah
Ederson – Makoun – Kallstrom
Pjanic – Benzema – Mounier

The above lineup was totally random. I would like to see Anthony Reveillere take a breather because he hasn’t had a minute off since Francois Clerc was injured, but is Lamine Gassama ready? I’d be tempted to throw him out against Nancy, but he might not be ready. It’s also likely that we’ll be seeing more of the Cris and Mathieu Bodmer pairing in central defense because we need John Mensah to play as an LB. So Puel has to get his defense sorted in this match to be ready for Bayern.

Since Jean II Makoun was taken off early last week, I’m hoping that he’ll be the one who starts this match in order to give Jeremy Toulalan some more rest. It’s also possible that both will play against Nancy, but I think that’s overkill. Then again, Puel had both start against Le Havre, so…But if one of them is benched, that will give Kim Kallstrom some much needed time. Ederson also deserves a start after such solid performances over the last couple of weeks.

Up front, I think it’s likely that Puel will start Karim Benzema and then take him off early – that or bring Benzema on towards the end of the match and start Frederic Piquionne or Fred instead. Miralem Pjanic and Anthony Mounier should also be starting UNLESS Puel decides to put Benzema on the wing again. Which would be retarded, but for some reason, all coaches have a fixation with that tactic.

Good luck in finding this broadcast on television anywhere. You can check this site for links, and as always, if you find a good stream, please share with the rest of us.

Expected Result:

I’m going to go with a 0-0. Not to be a party pooper, but Lyon haven’t exactly been lighting up their attacking skills, and with Juninho injured and Karim Benzema thinking about the upcoming match, I don’t see much danger being created against Nancy, who are already really stingy when it comes to conceding goals.

Also, I’m going to be away from a computer all day tomorrow, so I’ll have no idea what the score is until late at night, unless someone wants to text me the match result…

But have no fear! I will have my fingers crossed all day for a Lyon win, even if I don’t think it very likely.

I never thought I’d ever say this in my life, but I miss Grosso’s defending!!!! And Bodmer and Toulalan looked mixed-up defending that cross.

WOW, just WOW. I was totally not expecting this. I just got back home and saw the scoreline, and I am just floored that Fred scored. Maybe he read John’s blog entry and decided to prove everyone wrong. Anyway, it sounds like Mounier had an excellent game today.

But what is this about Benzema getting injured?

Melissa B.: I will be there!

    Here are l’equipe rates :
    1. H.Lloris 6
    20. A.Réveillère 6
    12. J.Mensah 5
    3. Cris (c.) 6
    28. J.Toulalan 4
    17. J.Makoun 5
    7. H.Ederson 4
    39. F.Piquionne (65e)
    5. M.Bodmer 5
    10. K.Benzema 7
    18. M.Pjanic (59e)
    9. Fred 6
    4. J.Boumsong (75e)
    27. A.Mounier 7

    Game rated 3 stars.

I just came back home. I was at Gerland tonight.
That seemed a little easy for Lyon, Nancy never really scared us.
Mounier was just FANTASTIC. I’m so happy for him, because there’s a long time I want him to be recognize for his talent. He’s been terrific, with 2 assists, and so much runs during the game. He didn’t succeed in everything, but he never gave up. Man of the match !
Benz & Fred did the job. Nothing special to say about them, I think they’ll be ready for thuesday.
Benz goal wasn’t so easy. He’s our Benzébut.
Makoun was great, as usual, I love more and more this guy pairing la Toul. But Toulalan seemed a little tired. I’d have like him to be replaced by Kallstrom during the game but he played the 90.
Ederson is really not comfortable on the right wing. He did precious pass and tried to be what he is for 3 games, but it’s obvious he prefers to be on the left. He wasn’t bad. Just not as good as the others.
Reveillere did the job, and went forward a lot to help Ederson. He seems to be more and more confident, surely because of his increasing playing time.
Mensah was good, except on the Nancy’s goal. He is the one who did the major mistake. He’s not a LB, we have to remember. But he is very strong, I think he could have avoided the goal if he had been more concentrate.
Bodmer and Cris was pretty good. That goes better and better.
But I agree that’s not (for the moment) the best CB pair in the world. Just need time.
Lloris was… Was he on the pitch ? I can’t remember anything he could have done. Not his fault. Just no major actions of Nancy to declare.

Lloris should get a 2, not a 6. He is really, really awful in Lyon and has not shown himself at all. I miss Coupet. Lloris is overrated.

Lloris overrated???? I must be tired to imagine reading things like that!
Lloris misses only one thing : defense management. He doesn’t know the players well enough to “shout”.

I love Aulas comment after the game : “Now, we will have to go and challenge Bayern, a team that will want to amend from their loss… (Bayern lost 1-0) Their result is not good news for us…”.
Does he mean it would have been better if Bayern had won 7-0 over the last weekends??? Champions League is different from the normal championship, but now is probably the best time for us to go and play Bayern in the Allianz Arena.
The next game is crucial, as it may be the game to finish top of the group at the end of the 6 games. It is crucial we finish top of group for the knock-out draw…
Let’s put all our chances on our side.

Dear Claude, I have one request: If you’re going to put two strikers on the pitch, please do what you did today, use a 4-4-2!!! Today was great! I never want to see Benzema on the wing again!

Lefutur: I don’t think Mounier will start vs. Bayern, it’s to big of a game. And Puel won’t risk a formation change in such a big game also. I think he’ll start out with a 4-5-1 with two Defensive Mids, and if Bayer’s offense is stiffled, and Lyon haven’t gotten a score late in the game, he might switch to a 4-4-2.

I was also at the game. AWESOME experience for my first ever Euopean match (I live in Vancouver, Canada). I agree with ^Jo^, Mounier was terrific. Lyon’s defense was also really solid in the 2nd half.

One observation for anyone who buys tickets for Gerlande on-line. CHECK THE START TIMES! My tickets said the game started at 2000h, Fortunately we arrived quite early for what we thought was the start time, so we only missed about 15 minutes.

Mounier was good, but i would like to see Pjanic starting the game. Why do we always play with 2 defensive midfielders? We can play also with 1 DM,Toulalan or Makound, and 1 attacking midfielder Pjanic or Juninho.

I don’t really agree we play with 2 DM.
Makoun is more than a DM. He do great passes, and can build offenses.
Makoun / Toulalan just reminds me Diarra / Essien.
That was not so bad :)
To me, Pjanic and Mounier are not in competing. Pjanic is more a number 10 than a LW. I think Puel understood it.

I FINALLY saw highlights. Mounier was amazing. It says a lot for Puel that he kept faith in him and kept playing Mounier despite his last couple games being subpar. In an interview Mounier said he wanted to leave Lyon this summer, but Puel convinced him to stay.

But I agree, I don’t think Mounier will start against Bayern. It will probably be Govou and Ederson on the wings. If Juninho is fit, it’ll probably be the usual 4-3-3/4-5-1, but if he isn’t, then he might go with a revamped 4-4-2 like what we saw against Nancy, except with Ederson back on the left and Govou on the right.

Inara, this is cold news. He was interviewed by Sky sports about a week ago, mentioned that he eventually will end up in the EPL, and they made their headline with this, saying he wanted to leave Lyon for the EPL next summer. So he had to rectify in another interview that before such a move he wanted to win titles with Lyon..
Nothing really surprising as OL had to battle hard to deter him from going to the EPL, as Wigan, Pompey, west Ham, Blackburn were reportedly chasing him, and he mentioned several times he wanted to play in England, as the attacking football played in the EPL is a dream for a defender, that his family speaks English, that he wanted to follow his mate John Utaka, etc..

So, not much to worry about I think; this is a typical news “bubble” in my opinion… Especially now that he gets regular playing time in Ligue 1 with the French champion, and very probably tomorrow in the CL, who in their right mind would plan at that stage a move to Portsmouth or Wigan?

ah yes Megame, nobody in their “right mind” would leave Lyon for Wigan, but let’s not forget, Mensah’s mental state is a little shaken up after spending time with the gendarmes… i would imagine that british authorities are a little more open to seeing people of african descent driving nice cars and mr. mensah might be thinking the same thing. i wouldn’t blame him for making a decision like that. i’m not making any untoward suggestions about french police either, i’ve spent some time in france and my olive complexion draws more sideways glances there than it does here in toronto for sure.

for example, in canada we have many artists, scientists, professionals, and others of middle-eastern and south-asian descent who refuse to travel to the united states because of problems or hassle at the border (my gf is a phd student and was appalled by what her colleague, an iranian-born CANADIAN CITIZEN, had to go through when they went to a meeting in upstate new york this summer). sure, they lose out on some prestige if they abandon plans to attend a conference in california, but what they gain in dignity may be more worthwhile.

inara, i apologize if this post ends up blowing the thread to oblivion when people get upset. but it’s true, and it’s relevant to the mensah / BPL discussion i think. he definitely has the quality to be a premier-league player anyway. then again, so did Boumsong for a while… heh
