Lyon vs. Toulouse (It’s Back to Work!)

By: Inara | January 12th, 2008

I can’t believe how quickly winter break flew by. I’ve been enjoying the “respite” from blogging duties by not having having to worry about game previews and recaps, but now it’s back to business.

Our first game post-holidays is against Toulouse, a really annoying team for Lyon to play. We haven’t defeated them in the last three games and in fact have been playing them at the same times for the past two years (second game of the fall, first game of the winter). The last time we faced them, it was in August. Kim Kallstrom was expelled and Cris injured his ligaments. We lost 1-0, and after that, Lyon’s season went downhill for a while. People began muttering that Lyon’s dominance was at an end. But that was a long time ago, and the Lyon of August and the Lyon of January should be an entirely different proposition.

Match background:

I’m really tired of losing to Toulouse. In fact, I don’t even have the energy to make a pun out of that. Suffice it to say that we need to stop being Elie Baup’s whipping boys. It also doesn’t help that Johan Elmander, Toulouse’s start striker, scores against Lyon in what is becoming a regular basis.

But while Lyon have gotten better and better since August, Toulouse have been underachieving. They’ve gone from being Champions League participants to barely hanging onto 12th place in the league. They started out the second half of their season on the wrong foot as well – they lost to third division Paris FC in the Coupe de France. Worse for them, they are losing four important players to the African Cup of Nations – Achille Emana, Francileudo dos Santos, Fode Mansare, and Kevin Constant. In 19 games, they’ve scored 19 goals and conceded 21. Ten of those goals were scored by Elmander.

As for Lyon, they’ve started their winter campaign on the right foot. After a convincing victory over Creteil, Lyon will want to build their momentum. Though winter is traditionally a difficult time for Lyon, Perrin has been hoping to fix the problem by changing the training schedule and by forcing the players to play competitively from the start (as opposed to Gerard Houllier, who allowed his players to take it easy their first week back from holidays).

Though Lyon are in first place, they are only four points ahead of Nancy. So Lyon really need this win in order to bolster their lead, especially since Nancy will be weakened by the African Cup of Nations. Lyon on the other hand aren’t really affected by the tournament because the only player they are losing is Kader Keita, who hasn’t been influential for Lyon so far anyway. With 38 goals scored and 16 conceded, Lyon should have the advantage.

Lyon info:

The best news is that Gregory Coupet is back! He played against Creteil and looked pretty good, but this will be his first big test against a team that has always given Lyon a hard time. Cris and Patrick Muller are still out, though Cris will be returning to Lyon next week.

Sidney Govou is still out with a pulled thigh muscle that he picked up against Nancy, though he should be back soon. Francois Clerc also suffered the same at practice a few days ago, so he will be missing the match as a precaution as well.

Le groupe lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre, Grosso, Cleber Anderson, Squillaci, Réveillère, Paillot, Toulalan, Beynié, Källström, Juninho, Bodmer, Ben Arfa, Rémy, Mounier, Fred, Baros, Benzema.

Lyon’s two newest recruits, Cesar Delgado and Marc Crosas, will not be listed on the bench, though we may see them during next Wednesday’s Coupe de la Ligue match against Le Mans. Also, Fred has been included in the list of players though he may be transferred any day now.

Expected Lineup:

Coupet
Reveillere – Squillaci – Anderson – Grosso
Juninho – Toulalan – Kallstrom
Ben Arfa – Baros – Benzema

I expect Perrin will utilize his best lineup possible. With Clerc injured, and with Nadir Belhadj’s departure, I don’t see what other back four Perrin can put out on the pitch. The preferred midfield setup of Juninho, Jeremy Toulalan, and Kim Kallstrom should be starting, though there is always the chance that Mathieu Bodmer might start in the place of Kallstrom.

As for the front three, with both Govou and Keita absent, that leaves only one experienced winger, Hatem Ben Arfa. I highly doubt that Perrin would start Loic Remy or Anthony Mounier. So that means that Karim Benzema will have to start out wide. But if Lyon can dominate comfortably, Benzema will probably drift to the center, and Kallstrom will move a bit further up.

Check for streams here. I’ll also try to post links in the comments tomorrow.

Expected Result:

Toulouse is a tough team, but they are missing Emana and Mansare, and Elmander may have a hard time breaching the Lyon defense – weak as it is – by himself. So I’m thinking it will be 2-0.

Fantastic – too bad about that final goal which should never have happened, Fabihno was left all on his own. But hey at least we have three points and Nancy only drew so that builds the margin.
The worst thing today was Man U winning 6:0 (ouch).

yer Storm, thats why a couple of QUALITY defenders not like kadlec, bodmer, kallstrom and Anderson- that and a striker are musts in this window or forget the quater finals of champs league the last toulouse goal further outlined the need for defenders. Not pointing the finger at anyone but Anderson is mostly the problem.

Remy surprised me. I’m not typically a fan of his but he played well tonight, I’m slowly warming to him.

I liked what I saw, the small amount I got to see Benzema and Ben Arfa were great, while Juni knocked in another free kick and the defense was fairly stable. And seeing Remy play well was enjoyable, he has potential and showed some today. Mounier, now that just brought a smile to my face, the kid is good, I am hoping he will get a few more sub appearances now. And with Toulalan getting yet another card, Roman Beynie may get a shot at the defensive midfield role quicker then we think…

It was nice to see so many homegrown players on the pitch. Benzema, Clerc, and Govou are regulars, while Mounier, Beynie and Remy are at least regularly on the bench and trying to break into the team. And don’t forget Ben Arfa, who’s been at Lyon since he was 14-15.

Also, Bryan Bergougnoux, who was playing for Toulouse tonight, is another Lyon academy graduate.

Lyon remind me a bit of arsenal, everybody wrote them off when the stars left (henry, vieira, pires and co )- same with lyon (diarra, essien, abidal and malouda ) there both now have young playetrs leading the show arsenal ( fabregas, adebayor and eduardo ) lyon ( benzema, benarfa and toulalan ) both clubs with similar playing style dont like to spend much money and doing well currently. ( also arsenal have a french theme, lyon are french- hhmm… very similar indeed

Benzema Ben Arfa and Juninho work so well together. I’m sure they can overcome Manchester.
Aulas post match interview was also interesting I thought. Probably no more signings this January, but possibly some african signings this summer.

Ronan “The Don” Napier : Get over yourself… Everyone predicted Lyon to win the title this year again… Even with the loss of Malouda, Abidal and Tiago. (http://lyon.theoffside.com/competitions/rebuilding-lyons-formula-1-car-2007-2008-season-preview.html)...
Most people found that Lyon were effectively weaker (and I still think so), but that even “weakened” as they were at the beginning of the season, who could fight with them? L’OM? Bordeaux? Neither has the depth nor the sheer quality of players l’OL has… And at the beginning of the season, a lot of people were expecting Fred to get a full season in, and for Kader Keita to become a star on the right wing… Just sayin’…

olweb. He didn’t say they would sign anyone. But they will prospect during the CAN (as all the other clubs I guess).
African players are always good to include in a squad after the CAN as they are virtually NT free for 2-3 years. They usually come up even better for their clubs during this period.

Ronan – Arsenal (or at least Wenger) also has an uncanny knack of selling players when they’re still very hot but just past their peak. Commercially its a priceless skill. Wenger is also great at standing behind his men. When Henry left he said he didn’t need another striker because he had all the skill he needed already – what a great moral boast to the younger guys and look how its paid off this season.

I liked the Remy Vercoutre banner about Mission Accomplished. That was nice to see the fans appreciate his contribution. Im surprised he lost his spot so quickly, he was doing well.

Lyon and JMA should start paying attension to our under-18 striker yann ekra-17, and higly talented un-17 alexandre lacazette-16 and chiaccio-lyon reserves, they are good players who cpuld turn to a new benzema, walcott and dos santos. (lacazette is very, very quick )

But there’s no way you would play Vercoutre over a fit Coupet right, for all that Vercoutre provided good cover he just doesn’t play at the same level. The banner was a nice touch though and its not the first time the fans have shown their appreciation for Vercoutre in this way, which is nice to see.

You said almost everything I had to say about this game.
Just wanna add that I’m allright about Ben Arfa, he did a great math BUT he did in a great part because of Benzema.
Toulouse players was always at least 3 around Benzema when Lyon had the ball. There was a plan “anti-bernzema”, because he scare everybody when he has the ball. So Hatem had some space to show us all his talent. He could do long long rush. I liked how he seemed to enjoy to play, that was refreshing. But he’s still sometimes a little bit selfish. I don’t worry, he will learn with playing games.
Lyon has his own Cristiano Ronaldo, and he’s younger. The Lyon / Manchester Game will be VERY interesting.

And for your information (you won’t be surprised), FRED has been whisttled by Gerland when the Gerland’s speaker announced the team line up.
Canal + said 2 hours ago that he probably won’t go to PSG, Tottenham made a very interesting bigger offer for him. I don’t know how much.

I’m happy, Mounier played well for a first appearance this season, but not long enough :) I really like him.

I think another reason we can’t play Vercoutre anymore is because Coupet has to get back into form, and the only way he can do that is playing high level matches. Perhaps Vercoutre is in better form right now, but Coupet will eventually surpass him, and he has to do so before the match against MU. Still, it understandably sucks for Vercoutre, who’s played more in the last six months than in his entire career.

Thanks for the highlights, lefutur. You saved me from having to search for them.

And Jo, you bring up a very interesting point. I’ve noticed it too – the players are having so much fun out there. They are quite literally playing football. I love that. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that at Lyon.

Yeah, I would play Coupet over Vercoutre, its just a shame he is now back on the bench, surely another Ligue 1 team beckons for him, he wasnt that bad. And Ronan, although Ekra and Lazacette are interesting players, their age dictates they wont be in the first team. Ekra may get an appearance towards the end of the year, but he has Barlet, Miguet and Baros in front of him still. Lazacette may well be the next Benzema, with Mathieu Salamand the next Ben Arfa.

coupet was great, vercoutre did a job that deserved our thanks, but he probably wouldn’t have stopped both of elmander’s late shots.

i feel “the don” has a good point; sure OL was still tabbed to win L1, but most observers felt they had been considerably weakened, wheras imho, (and that of angel marcos) they presently have their strongest squad EVER.

there was a plan anti-karim, that was clear, but as a plan it was in the image of its conceptor elie beauf: un peu simplet et beaucoup bourrin.
