Lyon Win Peace Cup

By: Inara | July 21st, 2007

Hard to believe, I know. But somehow Lyon broke their “Bottling Up Big Matches” curse and actually won a final.

Granted, it’s the Peace Cup, not the Champions League, but considering the fact that Lyon were the runners-up in the previous two editions of the Peace Cup, it’s nice to finally bring the trophy home. As well as the two million dollars, of course.

The other finalists were Bolton, who despite being dominated by Lyon for nearly the entire 90 minutes, managed to keep the score 0-0 until the last six minutes of the game. Lyon, in typical fashion, had shot after shot on goal but only managed to get one in. But something’s better than nothing, right?

Kim Kallstrom saves the day.

Kim Kallstrom was the man who won the game for Lyon. After Hatem Ben Arfa dribbled the ball for 16 seconds in the 18 yard box, he passed the ball to Kallstrom, who slotted it home.

Perrin once again used the 4-4-2, which seems to be effective. The lineup looked like this:

Coupet
Clerc - Muller - Bodmer - Reveillere
Govou - Toulalan - Kallstrom - Belhadj
Keita - Benzema

I’m going to keep this entry short because I didn’t watch the whole game, just highlights, so I can’t comment about player performances in detail. But from what I understand, Kader Keita and Kim Kallstrom were the danger men. The team proved to be versatile because this is the hundredth time that Perrin drastically changed his formation.

Here’s something interesting: Patrick Muller was the captain because Cris was out injured. The armband passed to Sidney Govou when Muller was replaced by Sandy Paillot. After Govou left the pitch, the armband went to Jeremy Toulalan. So now we’re getting a better idea of the heirarchy that Perrin is instituting among the players.

Kim Kallstrom was voted Man of the Match while Karim Benzema was awarded the Ballon d’Or of the Peace Cup for being the best player of the tournament.

Also, this game gave Nicolas Anelka the chance to reevaluate his claim that Bolton offered him a better sporting prospect than Lyon.

Here are match highlights:

First half highlights (in English!)

Kallstrom’s goal (also in English commentary!)

Also, if you would like to download the torrent of the full match (and for the match against River Plate), let me know, and I’ll send you the link over email (since torrents are illegal and all…)

^Great line-up for just a friendly tournament. They weren’t afraid of injuries?

The match was quite interesting. But in my opinion, Lyon dominated the game not just because they were stronger, but more because Bolton was incredibly weak. Even though Lyon had only 2 days to recover after last match, while Bolton enjoyed two days more.

Coupet has been really good again. Great keeper, great man.
Clerc helped Govou quite a lot on the right wing, but was not that impressive.
Bodmer and Muller did quite well as CB, since Anelka did not manage to touch one single exploitable ball. Muller has been the best first half-time player for Lyon in my Opinion. Even after Paillot replaced him, the CD has been very strong. I still don’t think we need a fifth (!) CB.
Reveillere did not do that well, but still, he’s not a real LB.
Toulalan played very well (again). He also looks very tough physically, since he played although being half-injured. Please Jeremie do not get injured too often! Santos will never ever be able to replace you.
Kallstrom scored, but in my opinion did not play that well. He could have given an easy goal to Benzema during the first half.
Belhadj has proved he can be a very good LW. I love him!
Ben Arfa played decently too, even if I think he played too individually. Just like Keita.
Govou did some Govou stuff. Good player but unable to be dangerous in front of a goal keeper.
Benzema played Ok but did not manage to score. This seemed to piss him off during the game.
And in my opinion Remy does not deserve to be in the pro squad.

It is funny to see how everyone has a really different opinion on who was Lyon’s best player.
I think it is actually a good sign, because it is therefore the team that shines and not individuals.
I know Ben Arfa is playing too individually at times, but his dribbling skills can turn over a match. When you look at it, he is the only player in the team who plays randomly. But it is a good thing as he can create danger at any point during the game. He loses the ball fairly often, but that’s lack of experience. He will lose it less and less every game.

Keita is such a good player. He will explode this season. (he already did at Lille, but it’ll be another step this year).

Kallstrom and Toulalan work well together, very complementary. It will be tough for Perrin to chose the starting midfield. I wouldn’t be able to decide who to play.

I am optimistic for this year.

As pride of Lyon said, I cannot really say “who” was the man of the match. That was a very good COLLECTIVE performance. I’d love to see it. Some settings are still important to do, but I’m sure Perrin saw them, and that will go better and better.
I’m happy for Baros who do very good match since the beginning of peace cup, and show what I always was thinkin about him. He’s strong and make some difficulties to adverses defenses. He just have to score and that will be perfect.
When I saw Lyon playing with that spirit and that skill, and when I realize we still have Cris, Squillaci, Grosso, Fred, Juninho etc… I REALLY don’t be pessimistic for next year. Hope I’m rigt !

    I just read something… I can’t believe !
http://www.footmercato.net says that Valence is interesting in buying Kimmy (this… is not the good news). The proposed 12 millions euros to OL.
But the most incredible, is that they seem ready to include Morientes in the deal, to get Kallstrom.
Wow. I don’t know what to think about. Morientes is really a great player, with so much experience of CL and big matchers, and he’s 31, maybe the ideal to let Benzema become bigger and bigger.
But could Fernando be interesting in playing for Lyon ?

He played for Monaco, though I think Real was fronting the most of his salary.

Morientes scored maybe only 10 goals in L1. I don’t know.

Yeah his goal production has gone down, but he is still a reliable target man who does well every season despite Liverpool. I wouldnt giveup Kim Kallstrom to have him though, I honestly think clubs take Lyon for an idiot.
Barca- Hey, Jean Mimi, we want Abidal, we will give you Saviola
Lyon- Hey Laporta, you can have ABidal for way above his market value because he is vital to our team, and Saviola is a Bosman transfer so that is not a legitimate offer.
Barca- Oh right, our mistake, we will give you half what you want for Abidal, and throw in Belleti or Slyvinho
Lyon- We will give you ABidal, France’s starting LB with years of champions league experience who is a vital part of our team for a Brazilian fullback who doesnt play for the national team and doesnt really play for you?
Barca- Yes, good deal isnt it.

I have another, arent you all so lucky…
Juve- Hey, Jean Mimi, we want Cris. We wont give you Trezeguet, you will have to pay full price, and we will probably only give you have of what Cris is worth and get in another scandal and opt out of paying you.
Lyon- Hey Blanc, we want Trez, but not at full price, he is 30 and on the decline. And Cris is our future captain, we wont negotiate
Juve- Ok, fine, we will look else where, and try and lure other players away from their clubs, just like Inter Milan.
Lyon- Yeah, go knock on Marseilles door, they love it when big clubs talk to their players…. hehehe

Valencia has almost 40 players on their roster, granted about 10 are on loan. Kallstrom would not be a starter, Baraja, Albeda, Edu, and Raul Albiol are all above him a well as Sunny (who is awesome by the way). Hugo Viana is in the same vein as Kallstrom, and right now he has a broken metatarsal on loan at Murcia. Kallstrom should be smart enough to realise this year he will be playing signinficantly more then last year, although last year he got in to almost every game off the bench or as a starter.

Interesting read, especialy Ben Arfa’s comments. Very mature and professional, I like it. Oh and also, Hugo Viana is on loan at Osasuna, my mistake.

    Lyonopoly?

Chelsea - How much for Malouda.
Lyon - 30M€ and not a penny less.
Chelsea - Ok. I’m pulling out.
Lyon - Uhh, wait, since you said you wanted Malouda, he wants to leave.
    Chelsea - Well… I’ll give 10M£.
Lyon - 17M€? You must be kidding me? He is at least worth 27M€?
Chelsea - Oops, negociations with Real for Robben have fallen through. Well, I’ve just got Pizarro, Ben Haim and Sidwell on free contracts. I guess I can negociate. After all, I have at least 70M£ transfer cash, since that’s what I got for TV revenue, as Kenyon has announced that with CL and League revenues added to ticket and merchandise sales we’re breaking even.
    Lyon - So, 27M€?
    Chelsea - No. 12M£.
    Lyon - 25M€ or he doesn’t go.
Chelsea - Stop kidding, Malouda hasn’t even come to your pre-season training yet. and he’s not better than C.Ronaldo (12.25M£)
Lyon - He’s older than C.Ronaldo was, and has more experience. Also, Liverpool want him, since they’ve sold Zenden.
Chelsea - Go for 13M£ then.
    Lyon - 21M€.
Chelsea - No. Malouda is already in London. 13M£.
    Lyon - Ok…
Chelsea - Well… We got Malouda for the less than Obi Mikel. Not bad, considering he’s at least as good.
