Milan Baros Breaks Speed Records in France
By: Inara | November 2nd, 2007This morning, the French police caught Milan Baros driving his super sweet black Ferrari at 168 mph (271 kph). I’m not sure why he was driving so fast - maybe he was late to the doctor’s office, was fleeing a murder scene, or maybe, as Mike’s Cereal Shack pointed out in the comments of this post, he’s taking Lyon’s Formula One concept a little too seriously.

Is he compensating for his slow speed on the pitch?
The police were quite sad to report that Baros broke the record speed in the Ain region, which was previously held by a motorcyclist going at 150 mph (248 kph) in 2000.
Baros now faces a HUGE fine, and worse, may have his license suspended for three years. I don’t think he’ll remain at Lyon that long (do license suspensions carry over from country to country?), so until he does leave, he might have to take the metro to practice every day.
Though I should also point out that Baros is not the first OL player to make headlines with his reckless driving skills. Last summer, Sylvain Wiltord (then with Lyon) was caught speeding 135 kph in a 50 kph zone. And then a few weeks later he was arrested because he didn’t show up for traffic court. Also, former OL midfielder Michael Essien was caught speeding and drunk driving the night that Lyon won their sixth title (he may have been the only person celebrating that night).
I hope Baros doesn’t do the same. Having so many players associated with Lyon, arrested within months of each other, will be very embarrassing.

Idiot.

So far, his “official” excuse is that he “wanted to let a friend he was with hear the purr of a Ferrari engine”…

As ridiculous as this is, his reason is pretty hysterical:
from L’Équipe: L’attaquant tchèque de l’OL roulait entre Genève et Lyon en compagnie d’un ami, à qui «il voulait faire entendre le bruit du moteur».
Basically him and his boy were coming back from Geneva (146km away) and the other guy wanted to hear what kind of noises the engine could make. Who knows, maybe he just wanted to see if he could get from Geneva to Lyon in 30 mins?

That is possibly the best excuse ever.

It could be that Baros is trying to find an exit strategy. He saw how pissed off Aulas was about Wiltord’s speeding.
Or maybe he really is an idiot.

Also, I was reading in Le Progres, he was actually spotted by a military platoon, who couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the speed posted on the radar screen.
Baros will probably lose his Ferrari.

I can only imagine. The fastest I’ve ever gone was 95 mph in North Carolina. And I was nervous that a cop would flag me down.

They took his ferrari at the scene. I think I might apply to drive him around on a 407 renault automatic until he can drive again.

Definately an idiot.
Both his Ferrari and his license were confiscated immediately. Driving license suspensions do carry across European countries (theoretically so do pionts but the systems aren’t always there to make that happen).
You have to physically surrender your license if it is confiscated so without that Baros wouldn’t be able to get a new one in say Italy or England. Good news for anyone wanting to stay alive if they use the same roads Baros would have driven on.

its got to be so hard to own a car like that and not try to open it up at least once. i actually feel for the guy, his love of fast cars is his achilles heel.
who knows maybe he’s thinking of switching sports and become a race car driver since he’s not getting any playing time anywhere.

l’américain, a 407 would be a peugeot, not a renault
… and though it may be surprising (since almost all cars here are manual transmission) the 407 V6 comes with a 6-speed automatic standard.that said, the official car of OL is the audi A6; each player gets one and i think they’re actually required to come to practice in them.

Ashline : Scuse me?
I’m an idiot for saying that someone driving at 271 km/h, which more than double the authorized speed limit and thus putting himself, his friend and more importantly random people in danger is an idiot?
Well, then I’m definitely an idiot!
But what does it make of you, then?

Guignol I think they’ve now changed the official car to the Audi Q7 4 x 4. I caught a training session about six months ago and they all drove those except for Wiltord who had a Porche ( in the days he still had a license).
About a year ago the local Audi dealer which physically supplies the players cars, was advertising the forthcoming sale of three players cars - from memory they were Cris, Clerc and Toulalan and included two TTs and an A6. It listed the three cars, which player had owned them, full spec of the cars etc. Neat way to push back the depreciation on an almost new car - just say that Cris has driven this for 12 months and suddenly its worth 5,000 € extra.

I was re-reading today and as soon as I saw I said renault, I swore. How dare I confuse the quatre cent sept of my dreams. However, I will now be looking to import one for my non-manual driving self.
