Milan Baros is obnoxious, Lyon plays like crap

By: Inara | April 19th, 2007

So not only didn’t Lyon formally win the title yesterday (thanks to a 0-0 home draw with Rennes), Lyon’s Milan Baros has also been accused of racism.

What a way to celebrate title number six.

Houllier

Ged’s party face.

First, the game, which was really boring. Even as a diehard OL supporter, I kept on changing the channel. Nothing happened in it. There were no real shots on either goal, no saves to make, not even any cool fouls. Rennes had an excuse - they were missing some of their defenders. But Lyon’s lineup featured Juninho, Tiago, Govou, Baros, Toulalan, Coupet, Abidal, Cris, etc. Basically, everyone who played yesterday was a starter except Hatem Ben Arfa.

I didn’t even realize that Juni and Tiago were on the pitch, their contributions were that nonexistent. And Govou who? At least Cris and Squillaci did their jobs, while Lyon’s best player was Jeremy Toulalan. Juninho, by the way, threw a small fit when he was subbed out.

The sad part was that Lyon wasn’t even trying to win. They had a great opportunity to clinch the title and celebrate it on their home ground, but they just played a couple of backpasses to each other, and the only time any shots that could potentially threaten Rennes’s goal was when Juni lined up to take a free kick - and those were unspectacular. End result: a drab tie that Rennes didn’t even have to work hard for, and only one point, which means that Lyon still needs one more point to officially be champions.

Lyon basically are champions, thanks to the huge goal difference. Even if Lyon lost their next six games, and Toulouse won the next six to be tied on points, Lyon’s GD is +32, Toulouse’s is +5. Houllier says Lyon are the champions, but Aulas is being more circumspect, saying not yet.

PitchThe players were so pissed off (I don’t know why - they’re the ones who decided to play like crap) that they didn’t even stay to applaud the audience, going straight to the locker room instead.

Gerland fans normally never boo their own team, but yesterday’s lackluster performance and the players’ attitudes were so disappointing that even loyal OL fans whistled their team off the pitch. The stadium literally emptied in ten minutes. It was not quite the reaction that Houllier was hoping for.

See, it’s not just me who is unhappy!

About the Baros situation: Bob has already covered this, but I thought I’d mention it here too. Lyon and Rennes players were getting into mini scuffles throughout the match, Baros especially being fouled quite a bit, a few times by M’Bia. At one point during the match, Baros pinched his nose and waved his hand in the air, gesturing towards M’Bia.

Baros

Baros: “I didn’t know French, so I expressed myself as best I could.”

Stade Rennes is saying that Baros’s gesture is racist. Baros is saying that he isn’t.

Baros barely knows five words of French, he’s still living in a hotel, so I’m inclined to believe him when he says that he couldn’t say what he wanted to M’Bia. The “you smell” gesture” has nothing to do with skin color, just overreacting, and he probably did it without thinking of black or white. But he was obnoxious, and that gesture would have pissed off anybody (and Lyon really could have come up with a better excuse. I wish Baros had just been honest and said that while he did to it to piss off M’Bia, he wasn’t being racist - so much more believable). And with football taking a stricter stance on racism these days, Baros might not be able to get out of this. It also doesn’t help that the fashionable thing to do in French football is to jump on the anti-Lyon bandwagon.

Lyon is backing up Baros 100%, so it’s now up to the LFP’s Discipline Committee.

Here is the video clip of Baros’s gesture. What do you think?

Lyon’s ‘explanation’ is an absolute pile of donkey doo. It was deeply cynical and sadly evidence of deeply held racist views by many. Shame on him.

I am not French so I do not know all of their different gestures, but I know that the gesture Baros made does not confer racism in the Northeast of the US. It just means you smell bad, so I do not really know what the problem is here.

Mbia is one of those players that make you wanna punch them in the face. Technically underdeveloped, he tries to get physical all the time.

    He needs a good headbutt.

Baros isn’t French either Corey. Trust me, it’s unlikely he meant he stank in the figurative sense. He knew what he was doing and got caught.

People say “you stink” all the time and they don’t mean literally. Just because a black man got insulted doesn’t mean we should make a big deal about it.

Of course he knew what he was doing, and what a weird gesture to make, but then again, something that is totally unrelated to racism in any sense of the world. By the Rennes president saying this was a racist act means that all black people smell bad and we should not point that out or it is racist. I showed this video to my Diversity Council Leader who is a black man and he was not offended in any way, but merely laughed at how silly it was.

Here is one of the many fouls that MBia committed on Baros that night. No wonder Baros was so pissed off. MBia did stink!

Thanks for posting that clip of M’Bia’s nasty tackle on Baros–that goes a long way towards explaining the hot tempers. I’ve already posted a rant about this on the other article, so I won’t burden you lot with the same things all over again, I just wanted to make it clear that I’m not exactly defending Milan’s action–it was childish and rude, and there’s no way around that. But to be fair, stuff like that happens ALL THE TIME in the “heat of battle” as it were, people get hot and worked up and just lose their tempers. It’s human nature. It’s irritating and he shouldn’t have done it, but it’s no big deal really, and certainly not “racist”, for heaven’s sake. He should have gotten a little slap on the wrist and some eye-rolling on the part of the other players and spectators, and that should have been the end of it. Instead he’s being hauled before a court. Vive la France.

Absolutely, Mara. I read your response on Bob’s post and agree 100%.

It’s disturbing how so many people jumped on the racism bandwagon without considering that there might be other reasons why Baros did that.

Baros has played with black players before, Lyon has several black players (which defended Baros, btw), and no one has ever complained before - so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. It’s not like he did anything obviously racist, and MBia himself has said that Baros didn’t say anything to him.

If Baros get sanctioned for this and he’s really innocent, it will be with him for the rest of his career. That’s really unfair. If he was racist, he deserves punishment. But so far, all signs are pointing away from it.

    Oh, and here’s another video.

    Baros/Mbia la vérité!

Gotta love the media. If they had shown the preceding two seconds before Baros’s “gesture,” perhaps public perception would have been different.

Oh my goodness. I am really, really upset by this whole “l’affaire Baros.” It’s just so unfair, he’s being treated absolutely terribly for no good reason at all. I’ve been a big fan of his for a couple years now (Euro 2004 ring a bell? :) ) and it’s been bad enough watching him struggle with injury and then being miserable at Aston Villa, now THIS ridiculous farce. If he gets punished for this, I would completely understand if he decides to quit the French league altogether! (He’s seemed pretty homesick for a long time–maybe Slavia Prague could use him.)

Aaargh, this just makes me so MAD! M’Bia, as I’ve seen from clips like “la vérité”, was in Milan’s face all match long. I’ve lost my temper during pickup matches for much less serious offences than what M’Bia was doing to Milan–I almost have to admire his restraint for only making a stupid face at him, I probably would have done a nice old-fashioned Zidane-style headbutt. LOL

But of course, even an obnoxious jerk like M’Bia is completely immune from criticism if he and some other guy get into a fight, because M’Bia is black?! Come on, is this all the civil rights movements fought for?!!

I just feel so awful for Milan right now. He loses his temper once and makes a childish “gesture”, and now his career could well be over. It’s just so painfully unfair. A slap on the wrist and a dirty look from the referee, like I said, that is the only punishment he deserves. Instead he’s being hauled before a court, probably going to be fined, a six-match suspension, and Lyon might even lose the title.

I’m wearing my Czech national team shirt today in solidarity with him. :) Can’t frackin’ wait until this storm blows over. (It’s been nice to find people here who agree with my position, btw–cheers!)

“Does anyone else think it’s ironic that this whole flap is taking place in France, which is quite possibly the most racist country in Europe right now? Sure the Czech Republic and central Europe in general has problems with that kind of stuff too, but it’s like nothing compared with the mess France has been for as long as I can remember.”

“In notoriously racist France (usually virulently anti-black themselves, I might point out), people are now getting all worked up into a frenzy of self-righteous fury to burn a falsely accused footballer at the stake.”

This is the most stupid things I’ve read ever. I do feel offended as a french and because from my trips all over Europe I do believe many should learn from us about integration and racism.

What mess you talking about ? Suburbs riots ? I think that was called this way, the ones you got to see through medias soooo happy to have something to say against the so-called arrogant french ? The french living outside our borders thought it was like a civil war here, this is just so funny when 99% of the french haven’t seen any difference. Suburbs aren’t full up of non-french people in their getthoes (that is on the contrary the anglo-saxon’s system). I know we are supposed to talk football that’s why I’ll stop, but to defend Baros you didn’t have to call us racists.

This part of your post was lame.

Quite the debate going on over here! Well, I’ll throw in my two cents and leave it at that.
Firstly, after having read everyone’s comments and checking out all the videos (thanks to all for finding and posting), it’s clear that Baros, as much as I dislike him, is not racist, it was simply a spur of the moment gesture, which wouldn’t have happened had he been able to communicate in French. I’ve played soccer for a while and that sort of thing happens all the time, pardon my language, but players talk shit to each other, it’s part of the mental aspect of the game.
Secondly, it’s not like Milan had been playing for Athletic Club in Basque country where there are no black players. Soccer is truly the world’s sport and virtually every professional team has black and white players, therefore it’s really hard to believe that any players, let alone Milan, are racist these days. If anything the racism comes from the spectators and the media. To be honest it’s as if they were just trying to make something interesting out of such a boring game.
Finally, I’m a little confused by the post prior to mine written by Thomas, as I can’t seem to find the quotes he’s referring to anywhere else on this thread. I can understand his disappointment but I don’t see where he’s getting his statements from.

My dumb quotes were in my other post, on Bob’s thread. Thomas, my apologies, I was very upset when I wrote that stuff about France and it probably came out a lot more vehement than I intended. I know how you feel about incorrect “media perception” of your country–I’m Hungarian, and, well, enough said. :) Should have thought a bit more before posting.

It’s okay, Mara. In such unfair situations, it’s hard not to lose your temper.

This kind of reverse discrimination is going on everywhere, unfortunately, not only in Europe but all over the world. Baros happens to be one of the more higher profile victims (because I honestly do believe he is the victim, not MBia).

MBia’s being overdramatic - you know, I know it, and chances are, most other people know it. But it’s so much easier to blame Baros anyway because he’s white, Eastern European, and not French.

As fans, we love the drama, which the media feeds to us. That Lyon-Rennes match was so boring that all they had to talk about was Baros and MBia. Forget the game.

Unfortunate, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Baros is regretting his decision to come to France a little bit. Because from now on, even if the LFP clears him, he’ll have this cloud over his head, and every one of his actions will be scrutinized.

He might be too scared to even foul Black players on the pitch.

    :(

I’ve just remembered (I’d tried to block it from my mind) that I’ve heard Baros called “dirty gypsy” about a million times, mostly by random idiots on the internet but I think I even heard it from some of my buddies a while back while we were watching a Liverpool match.

I can’t believe the rotten run of bad luck he’s been having the last few years. First his LFC career sank like a stone (for several reasons), then he went to Villa and apparently hated it, then just as he’s about to get a fresh start in France, THIS mess. Honestly I can’t help but hope he decides to go back home to Czech Republic. I remember when he joined Villa last year I read an interesting interview with him where the reporter described very vividly the depression and unhappiness that surrounded him like a fog the whole time they were talking about Villa and England in general, but as soon as the topic of conversation turned to the upcoming World Cup and the Czech national team, Milan’s face just lit up like a lightbulb and he immediately turned into the most cheerful, animated, excited and happy person you could imagine. I can’t help but think he’s been terribly homesick this whole time, maybe getting chased out of France will end up being a blessing in disguise.

The LFP has decided to suspend Baros for three matches. The situation update is here.

About Baros - I don’t know how happy he is in France. There were some rumors that he felt isolated from the mostly French and Portuguese speaking players, but he said in a recent interview that he felt welcomed and that he’s learning French in order to communicate better.

He mostly hangs out with Kim Kallstrom, apparently, and sometimes Tiago (who has good English).

But I agree - I don’t think he’s at ease at the Gerland. Maybe that will change when he starts scoring again, He’s had a bad time at Liverpool and Villa, so perhaps that contributed to his depression.

I can’t see him returning back to play in the Czech Republic though. He’s too high profile for their league, and his transfer fee and wage demands would be difficult to meet.

Lyon has had their eyes upon some other Eastern European players, so maybe that would help?

Ugh. It could have been considerably worse–at least the jury didn’t think he was being racist, and at least the suspension will only be three matches. But…but…still, it’s not fair. Words like “scapegoat” and “cheap cop-out” are coming to mind. I feel so bad for him, he’s been having such a rotten few years.

At least the Euro 2008s are not too far off–he’ll probably be so happy to play with his national team again. He always seems to be happy when he’s playing for the Czechs, unlike his frequently gloomy and morose club play.

Ahh, at least it’s over. And like I said, it could have been a lot worse. It could have been better too, though. :(
