Hmm. I was at Gerland, not that it was a great game to watch from a Lyon supporter’s perspective. We were just about the stronger team but a draw is probably fair to Monaco who tried very hard.
Overall there was very little to suggest we are championship contenders. Trying to be positive however here are the good points I saw:
Juni. Full stop period. As ever was good and never stopped right up until the end (unlike the rest of the team who after a really aggressive spell for the last fifteen minutes of normal time then gave up completely in the three mins of injury time), difficult to believe he was the oldest player on the pitch. He was the only one really hungry for a win throughout.Although Benzema wasn’t at his best he was more present than he has been for a while and he did have several occassions where he showed a huge desire to score (even if it once again came to nothing). His speed on a run is still stunningly impressive.
Keita didn’t screw up too much (now thats progress)
Piquionne’s goal will hopefully give him back a little much needed confidence and maybe support at Gerland (he’s still booed when his name is announced, not nice)
Beyond that not a lot of good things. Even Ederson was under par.
Also did anyone notice that Pat Mueller came on as a sub for Monaco. He had a very warm reception.
Of note, that Aulas is now admitting we might not win the championship and is stressing the importance of qualifying direct for CL next season.Posted from

Meh, I thought Keita was awful. He was blew several opportunities when we had chances to score, not to mention his poor crosses. You (Storm) must have not been among the thousands booing him when he was finally substituted. Ederson wasn’t great, but he didn’t deserve to be subbed out so early, maybe Keita. Also, I was disappointed Pjanic didn’t come on. I felt his vision and passing would have been a plus, especially considering Monaco was pretty much standing up to Lyon and playing their football.

Id like this team against Bordeaux
Lloris
Reveillere-Boumsong-Mensah-Grosso
Ederson-Toulalan-Makoun-Pjanic
Piquionne-BenzemaSeeing as we havent really seen Piq-Benz up front, you never know maybe theyll hit it off,it would take pressure off Karim maybe. Cris being replaced by Mensah-which is justice. And Pjanic at last given a chance-I think with this formation it will either really work and blow Bordeaux away or the flip side and we get thrashed like PSG at Delmas.
Lyon simply have to sign Sakho,Mauro Cetto(wild card),Bastos,Erding and why not Alvaro Negredo

Also signing Remy to

I don’t understand a couple of Puel’s decisions in the match. Why at this stage in the season, especially since every game counts is he playing Ederson at striker and Benzema on the wing? Plus why the hell does he let Reveillere start in such a crucial game, when he’s just coming back from injury? I don’t think Clerc was hurt and he’s looked pretty reliable since he’s been back.

Would this be the oldest striker to play for Lyon?

Id say the Cruz idea was to be 2 to benzema, which when you think about it is an intelligant idea seeing as Cruz has a remarkable goal scoring record for someone who has always been a sub at Inter,so signing him would certainly see goals from our No2 forward(unlike Piquionne). Id say Lyon could pull this transfer off easily,Cruz is exactly the type of player Mourinho wants to get rid of so I doubt Inter would put up a fight, hes cheap, has always been a number 2,and I doubt there are many takers for him accept Lyon either because of his age-34 which is a blow(he is older than Juninho)and makes me wonder what he has left to offer us. My guess would be if he came he would get 7/8 ligue 1 goals for next season-which I spose is exactly what a sub striker is needed for.

Although Id rather have Crespo than Cruz

Yeah, it seems like a good deal for Lyon, the only questions are: does he want to keep playing enough that he will he accept being #2 at a smaller club, in a less prestigious league? And how much does he have left at that age especially after his injury this year? Well, whatever it is, it can’t be as bad as Freddy P.

Does anyone know what happened to Inara and Jo?
Ok, let’s see the positive side of it. We are 2nd of the league… hurray!!!!
I mean, I have been a Lyon supporter since they came back up in 1st division. I shouldn’t be complaining. I have been offered some great CL matches for the last few years. I was spoiled, as well as all the Lyon fans.
The second spot may do both the players and supporters a lot of good. I am actually strangely confident for the game against Bordeaux. We should get Toulalan back (won’t we?). And although I dislike Puel’s style, the players will be fired up and play the attacking football they were used to play.
This second place could be Lyon’s rebirth.I feel kind of refreshed now, as in the times when Lyon was catching up with Lens for the first title.

“He’s the main reason why most Americans are illiterate about soccer,” claims a Boston-based Lyon fan, Inara.

did you look at the comments? Rob Smyth is a guardian journalist (i like him) and his comment, which was first on the article, is “Best of luck in whatever you do next, Dad.”

Funny article. I was wondering what’s happened to Inara as well, she hasn’t posted nearly as much this year – I guess she’s got too much other work going on

Great article, thanks Will. I just hope Inara will be back soon. She said one day that she liked to change hobbies fairly often, and I hope that her absence doesn’t mean she gave up on Lyon (especially after her wit has been recognized by a newspaper!).

Hey Everyone!
I’m still alive. I’m really really sorry for not being around, but I’ve had a breakthrough in my lab work in recent weeks and have been living in lab basically. I haven’t been able to do much of anything beyond my research, including blogging.
I was VERY surprised to see my name in the article. I didn’t even know about it until I got an email from Chris (of the Roma Offside) pointing it out to me. So that was pretty crazy.
I promise I’ll have a post up tomorrow. To be honest, it looks like I haven’t missed too much, Lyon are dicking around, as usual, Aulas is blaming everyone but his own people, Juninho is being super shady again…
But have no fear, a post tomorrow morning!

Does Lyon even have the confidence to win Ligue 1? It seems even the players are doubting themselves…..personally, I think it would be good for the league if someone else won. I believe one big reason why there is a huge exodus of talented players from France (besides big money offers) is that the league is too predictable– its too boring to attract money, players are sick of not winning, etc. Does anyone really think Karim will stay if they don’t win the league?

Lyon will play Fenerbahce and Porto in pre season-Lets hope by then we have only Lloris,Clerc,Toulalan,Makoun,Ederson,Grosso and Benzema from this season and the other four players are quality signings.

I do believe Karim Will stay unless we don’t qualify for the champions league! (And I don’t want to think about this option).
But overall I agree with you Sarah. to finish second would be a good evil. It would motivate the players for next season and take this burden of titles in a row of their backs. But we won’t do any better unless Puel breaks loose a bit and starts asking the players to play soccer.I noticed that this season we are one of the worst teams for the “fairplay” trophy. In previous years, we used to be in the top places. We can definitely sea a change of style. Puel is asking our poetic midfield to play rough football… and I’m sorry, but I still prefer Classical to Hard Rock.

I dont think anyone will be willing to pay Benzemas price tag of about 35mill,especially when he hasnt overlly impressed this season-none of the big sides really need him-either that or they want to sign someone like David Villa for a similar price.Does anybody know how Sandy Paillot is playing at Grenoble, because if the answer is well-we need him next season.

Lloris
Clerc-Cetto-Sakho-Grosso
Toulalan-Makoun
Remy-Ederson-Bastos
BenzemaThats a good formation to have. So how is Paillot doing

Nice line-up. Don’t know about getting those CBs since they aren’t likely to unload Cris, Mensah and Boumsong, but those attackers are within reach and the top two on my “realistic” wish list. We need wingers! And those two are definately attainable, even though Bastos is catchig the eye of some large clubs.

if we don’t get bastos we should try hazard and mancini..can’t believe we don’t plas pjanic more, he would add so much to the team! and benzema would score more
