MORE Injuries, Plus Marseille Want Hatem Ben Arfa (Hahaha)
By: Inara | April 8th, 2008This has got to be the worst year for Lyon in terms of injuries. Important players keep dropping like flies, right when things are getting crucial.
Last weekend against Marseille, Jeremy Toulalan and Fred were both carried off the pitch within the first half hour. Both suffered knee injuries, and thankfully, neither of them were too serious. For Fred, it’s not too bad because all he has is a slight sprain to his left knee, as well as a hematoma in his left calf. He’ll be out for four to eight days.

Toulalan’s injury, on the other hand, is more serious. He’s suffering from inflammation of his left knee ligaments, which will keep him out at least four weeks, though he’ll be fine by mid May. A combative player our Jeremy, even when he went down on the pitch, he still kept fighting for the ball. And he wanted to continue playing, but thankfully, Alain Perrin showed at least a little bit of good sense by subbing him out.
This is good news for Raymond Domenech, who wants Toulalan fresh and well rested for Euro 2008. But for Lyon, who are currently without a single DM, who have a French Cup quarterfinal match coming up, and who could still lose the title, his absence will be a big blow. Still, things could have been a lot worse.

In other news, Didier Deschamps is once again linked with Lyon. Rumors of Aulas’s discontent with Perrin are all over the media, as well as Alain Perrin’s squabbles with members of his staff, most notably with Joel Bats and Robert Duverne, and with certain players as well. The man being touted as his possible successor is Deschamps, who recently said
“Who wouldn’t be interested in Lyon? I had a few contacts when I resigned from Juventus, but it didn’t happen due to a timing problem…I am a coach who wants to win and there are of course a lot of chances to win with Lyon.”
That was probably music to Aulas’s ears because Lyon are a club who care only about winning, not how it’s achieved. It also helps that Deschamps has the kind of charisma that many of players would gravitate too, though I can’t imagine him and Bernard Lacombe getting along. Supposedly, Deschamps will be meeting with Lyon officials to discuss what he could offer the club. But how likely is it that Perrin will go just after one season? Lyon aren’t Marseille or Monaco. We don’t do the coach a year thing. So we’ll see.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It looks like Remy Vercoutre’s home next season will be with Nantes, who should be reinstalled in the topflight this June. Nantes is a big step down from Lyon, but Vercoutre will be their starting keeper, so it’s a good move.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Atletico Madrid is once again interested in Sidney Govou (because they just don’t have enough wingers…), but it looks doubtful that Govou will take them up on their offer. He’s getting paid a lot of money in a club that’s always in the Champions League.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
We already know that Arsene Wenger is hot and heavy over Hatem Ben Arfa. But now Pape Diouf has gotten into line as he waxed lyrical over Ben Arfa.
“He is extraordinary. If tomorrow I had the means to make him come to Marseille, I wouldn’t hesitate a second. Even if it’s for a single wonderful play per game, I take him right now…When I think that there is a coach in Lyon that puts him on the bench!”
Hmm. Sounds like Pape is attempting in some destabilization himself, though he must know better than anyone that he has absolutely no chance. Aulas would give Ben Arfa away for free before selling him to Marseille. Kind of like how Diouf felt about Ribery.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joke of the week is Lyon’s supposed interest in Milan’s goalkeeper Dida. That deserves a big fat LOL. We might as well keep Vercoutre. The players would probably walk off the pitch before they agreed to play with Dida behind them. Not to mention that Lyon would lose all their credibility as a serious club.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the girls side of things, Lyon may or may not be interested in Marta, Brazilian superstar and the best female footballer in the world. When asked about Lyon’s interest in Marta, Aulas has said that he is always interested in good players but that there is nothing concrete at this time. I doubt he’ll be that successful in getting her since her current team, Umea, carry a bit more weight in the world of women’s football. But as the UEFA Women’s Cup semifinal showed, Lyon are more than a match for Umea, and their coach said that Lyon were without a doubt the best team they’ve ever played against (take that, Arsenal LFC!). Lyon also have more financial clout, so who knows?
i would rather have Zidane……….lol. But seriously, it would be the biggest dream come true if Zidane would go into coaching and it was with Lyon. It would be awesome lol.
Well Pape Diouf, if you can’t understand him being on the bench you’re dumb. It’s simple, we have quite a few decent wingers, they all can’t play every game…
Zidane will go in to coaching some day, but it will be with Real Madrid. His son Enzo is in the u-16 right now, so I suppose that after Enzo gets to the u-18 Zidane will begin coaching the u-16 and work his way up. Calderon loves Zidane and has actively pursued getting him to coach for Real, which Zidane agreed to do, but a time table is not yet set. So I win!
As for Deschamps, he would be a good pick, but he has no skill in developing youth talent and he would demand for more transfers to come in, which never helps win titles with alot of turnover. Claude Puel would be my choice, he would use what we got more effectively and make a few minor changes, plus he would work on youth development, because in this world of over inflated transfer fees, youth development is going to be key in a few years to sustain a club.
Did anyone else worry about this one DM situation and see this Toulalan injury coming?
John: You aren’t the only one. I’ve been worried about this since the transfer window closed on Jan 31. The main option is probably going to be Kallstrom playing as a DM, which isn’t the brightest of ideas, but we are low on options. I’m not sure what Lyon were thinking when they let Fabio Santos go without replacing him.
In other disappointing news, apparently the club is betraying Patrick Muller by not extending his contract, despite the fact that he’s laid up with a knee injury that he got because of Lyon. If true, I’m crushed because that’s not how you treat a former captain.
It was bound to happen (Muller situation). He will practically never be the same and Lyon and probably Muller himself knows it. Not to mention, it is 100% likely Lyon are going to sign a defender this summer and with the hopeful emergence of guys like Charvet, Paillot, Abenzaor, and Badin, Muller and hopefully Anderson was probably going to be the odd man out. It is weird though, that they promised his an extension then reneged.
I really don’t understand this coach situation. Last year I was astonished for Lyon signing Perrin instead of Deschamps, and the only logical reason for that was that Deschamps wanted more freedom in his work than Perrin, and it would be therefore impossible for him to work with Aulas and Lacombe telling him what do to. I’m still dissapointed for Lyon not signing Deschamps somehow, but this doesen’t make any sense. If Lyon bring him this summer, and the reasons for not signing him are obviously still there, why oh why didn’t we do it last year? Does that mean that we’ve lost the whole year just because Aulas made a mistake for not signing him earier (I say mistake, because if we bring him now it would mean that not signing him before actually was a mistake)? Anyway, if Perrin does the double, I doubt he’ll leave Lyon, and if he doesn’t win anything - hello Didier!
The Muller situation is now official - there’s a statement on OLweb. The final decision will be taken at the end of the season when Muller’s recovery can be fully assessed, but it definately looks like there will be no extension of his contract.
tbh I never understood why OL said they would extend his contract earlier in the season, commercially it didn’t make sense. Yet to go back on their word now like this is just not a nice way of operating.You know we always seem to be debating the managerial role and who is a) strong enough to lead (not Perrin, maybe Deschamps) but b) capable of being dictated to by the JMA/Lacombe combo (yes Perrin but no for almost nobody good). I sometimes wonder how much of a barrier to our finding a good manager Lacombe’s presence is. Clearly he’s very talented and has brought in some great players, but by taking away such a fundamental part of the managers role (recruitment) it instantly reduces it and neutralises the managers role. Thus making it only appealing to a second rate manager. And thats to say nothing of him having the ear of JMA on anything technical.
I agree with Nicolas that Lyon shouldn’t hire coaches for just one season, but Perrin was a casting mistake. Can anyone see Perrin developing in the role and command respect? Players are getting always more power, show less dedication to their clubs, and have no problem walking over a coach who can’t keep them in check.
In my opinion, we have gone too far into our management model - two strong heads (Aulas and Lacombe) and a soft coach - To the extent that only the likes of Perrin are interested in the job!
As the shrewd businessman that he is, Aulas knows how to quickly adapt to changing conditions. I think if we want to reach the next step, we need a stronger coach with broader responsibilities. That said, Aulas is a control freak and Lacombe won’t take it laying down, so that should be fun..Posted from
Deschamps has denied that he’s had contact with Lyon and that he respects Perrin too much to ever talk about taking over Lyon. But he didn’t rule himself out either, just that nothing concrete has happened…yet.
