NE M’EN VOULEZ PAS. APRES TOUS, C’EST REAL MADRID!

Don’t hold-it against me. After all, it’s Real Madrid!
First Juni, then Michael Jackson, now this!!! This is honestly too much loss for a human being to be subjected to in the span of a couple of months. In case you’ve been living on the moon these last few days, Karim Benzema has left Lyon!!! I think I’m finally starting to get over the shock of this, and the seriousness of this developement- along with the sadness- is starting to sink-in. We all new that this was Karim’s last year, and were pretty convinced that all the rumors of bids by the big clubs were either rubbish or would be rebuffed, since the player himself stated he didn’t want to move before the WC ‘10. But, it appears that the moment Real actually came calling, it would be too much for Benzema to resist. Dam you David Villa!!!
This season has indeed been a sad one for OL: not only did it see departure of our beloved captain Juninho Pernambucano, but now we say goodbye to the greatest football “product” Lyon has produced, Karim Benzema.
<
Karim burst upon the scene this year with a prolific scoring run in the CL, joining the elite strikers of Europe.
Karim is a veritabale son of Lyon. He was born in the city and is a product of OL’s youth system, signing a contract with them at the age of nine. From a young age, his precocious talent stood-out amongst his peers and for many of the staff within the youth system, there was never a sliver of doubt that Karim would one day rise to greatness. He would have the first of many impressive seasons, scoring a whopping thirty-eight goals with Lyon’s U-16 team. Karim’s inate talent and confidence would bolt him into the senior squad, at the ripe age of 17. OL personnel would recall Benzema going-up to the senior squad strikers and telling them that he would be taking their spot soon.
The ‘07-’08 season created and opening for Benzema: With the depature of OL’s most talented attackers e.g., Sylvain Wiltord, John Carew, and Florent Malouda- as well as Fred’s injury, Karim was handed the reigns of the attack by new coach Alain Perrin. Along with fellow phenom cadet Hatem Ben Arfa, they brought great hope and high expectations that OL would reach new heights one day and bring something special for many years to come. But it wasn’t to be so. We saw glimpses of tantalizing interplay between the two startlets in that season of ‘07-’08 when they would both come away with honors: Karim took L1 Player of the Year, after leading the league with twenty goals scored, and HBA would take Best Young Player of the Year award.
<
The ‘08-’09 season saw that relationship shater, with HBA at the center of many locker room scandals and testimonials from other players that both of their egos had gotten out of control. Karim began the ‘08-’09 season bereft of his side-kick, as HBA made the exit during the summer mercato to Marseille. Center stage was now his alone, and it was his chance to show what he could achieve on his own, and that he did . He did not dissapoint, Benzema put OL on his back and racked up an impressive goal talley through a large part of the season, in spite of the new coach’s heavily defensive style of play.
But the young striker could only do so much of the lifting. After a prolific scoring run during a span of eleven goals in twenty-two matches, the burden became too much, and Karim hit the proverbial “wall,” only finding the back of the net three times in thirteen matches. But Karim would finally escape the drought scoring twice in a pivotal match against Marseille near the end of the season in the Velodrome, a match that few expected us to survive. Karim’s scores in that match were instrumental in the squad’s escape from a nine-game winless span that saw Bordeaux overtake them as leaders and OM take second, as well as pushing Lyon to the brink of elimination from the CL, a battle they would have to fight until the penultimate match of the season. Karim- along with Juni- helped carry the team in the last four matches of the season, Benzema scoring three key goals in the last two matches before the meaningless season finale against Toulouse, ending the season with a tally of seventeen, landing him second in scoring, tied with PSG’s Gillaume Hoarau and high scorer Andre Pierre Gignac of Toulouse. This would seal Lyon’s grip on third place and a trip back to the CL.
Despite his youth, Karim was a linchpin at OL. He had turned the outcome of matches in OL’s favor, many a time in his short career. The most important instances that come to my mind are the aforementioned Marseille match, as well at the final match of the CL group stages last year, when an OL- decimated by injury- were on the brink of elimination vs. Rangers at Ibrox, until Karim came-up with a brace, that saw us win 3-0 and through to the knock-out rounds. And who could forget the following CL match which saw Benzema score vs. one of the titans of football, Man U at Gerland. The score put us in the lead, and almost saw us pull-out a win were it not for our incompetent defense allowing a late goal that ended the game in a 1-1 draw.
Yes, despite all the allegations of swollen ego by fellow players, and ramblings about leaving his home club for greener pastures, Karim Benzema, although never a leader, was undoubtedly a large part of the engine that drove Lyon in the last couple of years. His prolific scoring led Lyon and very often carried the team during dark moments. He will be sorely missed, and no matter who is brought in, it’s highly doubtful that we will ever have someone who fills us with the hope that Karim’s prodigal talent gave us; a hope that such blossoming talent would contribute to the elevation of our club in the future, even if it was just for a short while.
Karim won four titles with OL(’05,’06,’07, and ‘08). His career stats with OL are as follows:

Adieu.

Reading that was depressing, especially the bit about Micheal Jackson(legend),and also-”He will be sorely missed, and no matter who is brought in, it’s highly doubtful that we will ever have someone who fills us with the hope that Karim’s prodigal talent gave us; a hope that such blossoming talent would contribute to the elevation of our club in the future, even if it was just for a short while.”But a very good article which sums up his departure well, when he was here he gave us hope, now its up to Puel,Lacombe and Aulas to find someone who can try an emulate Karim.Im wondering what the new reserve/academy players are like-the last ones were good-Remy,Benzema,Mounier,BenArfa,Paillot. I wonder how the new fresh faced teens of OL will do. Id like to see Yannis Tafer play as well, afterall he was top scorer at lasy years Euro championship and I believe he is good at reserve level-so the kid must have talent, interesting to see how he will evolve.

Yer Lyon certainly have talent coming through Grenier,Tafer,Gassama,Lacazette,Kolodziejczak,Valdivia,Abenzoar amongst others, these players I believe should be given a chance in the first 11 next season maybe 10 appearances each

Yeah, I didn’t even think about what Karim meant until today. I was one of the ones who was calling for his departure last season- well, not calling for it, but certainly looking foward with what we could do with what I back then thought would be a sale price on the upside of 40mill. I was of the idea that we needed to buy more players and build a team that wasn’t depended on one/two players from offense. I still believe that, but it’s still sad to see him go, and quite a bit of a shock, since we were assured he was staying put for one last season. I was so looking foward to see he and Lisandro together. Oh well.

Strangely enough, I am very optimistic for this transfer season. For me, Benzema was one of the main problem of our squad (as well as being a big plus). I mean, because he was good, we just stopped working as a team.
Lyon will be reborn after this transfer season.
- No more Juninho based formation.
- Players will have to play as a team to score.
- Undoubtedly Lyon will buy at least 2 very good players this season. I mean we have 43.5 million extra cash to spend from other transfers and lost 3 very big salaries with Juninho, Benzema and Keita (Grosso to come?)
- My bet (also a wish list) is that we will get Huntelaar, Lopez and a LB-CB (keep in mind anderson is back). Usually Lyon never disappoint me in terms of transfers, they always get the players we think about (Kallstrom, Toulalan, Keita, Bodmer,… etc) It doesn’t always turn the way we expect, but we can never really complain of the transfers when they are made.Posted from

bad for Ligue 1. we are a feeder league. sigh…

We wont get Huntelaar : he doesnt want to come. I dont like him though, some person said at Real I think about him-he just scorers goals-he really has nothing but goal scoring insticts-no linkup play, pace, strength, dribbling or anything he just scorers. I agree to a point that with Juninho and Benzema gone the rest of the team will have to play-but as things stand with know signings, the team really isnt good enough to take on the challenge-I mean we in the scheme of things have one recognised striker-Piquionne,Tafer is still at semi-reserve level,we also need to replace Keita I think, with a LW instead of an RW-Pablo Aimar ?He is cheap and available,he might be injured and not on form in recent times, but at Valencia 4 or 5 years ago he was great,so clever,he would bring you that attacking football.

I wasnt actually that dissapointed when Juninho,Keita and Benzema left because I thought that would mean Lyon were sure to sign someone because it seems like an eternity sice are last signing, forgetting Piquionne and Kolo, are last real signing was Mensah back in july 08,so Im desperate for any signing to be made to be honest.

Signings will be made, relax

Telling that guy to relax…? Impossible. Also, expect Clerc to be out too. Last year of contract, turned down extension. Reveillere still here and Gassama being an adequate backup.

Mensah,Cris-out-Lugano,Apam-in
Im looking forward to Soumah,he reminds me of when we signed Malouda,or Essien-players from small french clubs who rised to be stars

16 million euros plus Anthony Mounier and Miralem Pjanic loan -thats what reportedly Nice want for Remy,it seems very, very steep to me,asking for the equivalent of 20mill for Remy-He is a talented player but what has he done to earn a 20mill price tag ?Lopez, will cost about 20mill and hes an internationally recognised goal scorer, with an impressive record in the cl and portugal-all remy did was get 11 goals last season. To me he is worth 10mill,loaning Pjanic for a season is good(as long as there is NO option to buy,as we defo want him back)but keep Mounier, seeing as we are short of left sided players Mounier is crucial this season, anyway we cant let him leave because he will probably turn out like Remy last season-doing well and then we will want him back.

^^^^Does Nice realy think that Remy is worth 20mil and Benzema just 35mil
-RICHARD SOUMAH
“according to Goal.com France, which has exclusively revealed that the left-winger should join up with the Stade Gerland side in the coming hours.a transfer fee of around the €3 million has been agreed.”
What position does this guy play?It looks like a solid signing, but if we want to win the championship next year we must buy some real stars!
-On the official site of lyon there is a text about Lisandro Lopez but i dont understand it because its on french.
-Soumah is at least a start.Posted from

Soumah plays LM, but can play LWF also. He seems to be a replacement for Mounier. I don’t think he’s ready to play in the CL. I’d rather have Pjanic playing on the left if it came down to that.

Can any1 say anything about Soumah? anyone seen him play?

really havent heard of him ever before Lyons interest, but we need a signing of any kind firstly and secondly he plays on the left so thats good. I actually think he could be good,he must have something sbout him for Ligue 1 clubs to want him,he is young and also players like Essien,Abidal,Malouda etc were all unheard of players in France before OL snapped them up. Guingamp have produced and sold quite a lot of talent in recent years so hopefully Soumah is the next.

I think any player can be ready for the CL really just give them a chance, look at Cissokho of Porto he was at Guingamp last year and then played well in the cl,also Benzema he may not have been ready for the first games in the cl against Barca,Rangers and Stuttgart-but he did well finishing the campaign with 4/5 goals.

I didn’t even add what he meant to the L1. Great to hear fans, and coaches from other clubs say how important he was to the league.
