New Kits!

By: Inara | July 16th, 2009

Once again, Lyon have an entirely new set of kits this season. While the official presentation of the new kits won’t be until the end of July, Umbro has released a really nice teaser that gives us a good idea of what they look like. (scroll down to the bottom for more pictures)

The home jersey, in white, has changed the slightest, with the stripes going horizontal instead of vertical. I’m a little bit lukewarm on this one, but I guess once the sponsor is added, it’ll look less like pajamas and more like an actual jersey. There are also stripes on the back, which seems to indicate that players are supposed to tuck their shirt in (which means the ones that don’t will look kind of weird).

Closeup of the home and away kits.

The away kit is the one in black and red (or is that fluorescent orange?). I did a double take when I first saw it because it looks like it belongs on a Nice player or on a track and field athlete. But beyond that, I like the accents on the collar.

The Europe kit is by far the coolest. First, the navy is a great color – last season’s fluorescent yellow was an eyesore. The collar gives it a classy, retro look, and I love the thin stripes across the shoulders. Definitely my favorite of the three.

The only other big change has to do with our sponsors. Lyon has decided not to renew its sponsorship with Accor Group (owner of Novotel), which in a few months. That’s why the kits are not displaying any sponsors (the ones that do are fakes). So from now until January, Lyon will not have a sponsor on their shirts. But after January, the shirts will display their new sponsorship deal.

Though Lyon could easily get a sponsor right now, they want to take advantage of an upcoming change in French sports law. Right now, alcohol and gambling sponsorships are prohibited (this is also the reason clubs like Rangers and Liverpool have to wear their sponsors blacked out when they played in France). But after January, this will supposedly change, at least to allow gambling companies to sponsor sports clubs. At that point, Lyon can enter into a far more lucrative partnership with a company like PMU or Bwin. So by not accepting any sponsorship deals right now, they can avoid tying themselves down to a less lucrative sponsor for the next four years.

At least that’s the rumor.

Mounier must be loaned but I don’t know about Pjanic. We are at least two players deep on the depth chart at both wings: Bastos, Govou, “Ederson,” and Delgado, so Pjanic, having the ability to play on both sides, plus the inevitable injuries would be an asset.
I kind of don’t want Pjanic being loaned, bec I don’t want him to possibly explode this season, and nextthen year not have a spot in the line-up to come back to and OL’s then forced to sell him. I’d rather he progress a little slower. Don’t know if that make sense. I’d rather he come along slow, then if Toul, Ederson or Mak leave, he’ll have his own place.

I didn’t realize this, but Lyon have also purchased Kolodzieczak from Lens (he was on loan last season) for 2.5m euros. Lyon are also getting back Cleber Anderson, who will be returning from his loan at Cruzeiro.

Don’t like the home kit but the away and CL look better then last years.

With Cleber back thats 5 CB’s, 3 LB’s (I’m including Kolo since i’d like to see him get a run with the 1st team) and 3 RB’s. Might be able to survive the inevitable defense injury crisis this season ;)

Its one thing having a lot of CBs,lets not forget Bodmer isnt a CB,but do you guys not understand Boumsong,Cris,Mensah,Anderson,Bodmer are not good ! Sure we may have a lot but that doesnt mean they are good-most of them/all of them are not worthy of the CL-I would swap are CBs for Marseilles Cbs all day long I would swap every CB we have for Lucio for god sake. Its about quality more than quantity-and are CBs do NNOOTT have quality-to me its a no brainer we need a centre back. Are defence will concede in the CL-and that will be a shame if Puel builds a good midfield and attack just to be let down by poor centre backs. The message from me is YES we have an acceptable amount of CBs-absolutely.NO we dont have quality CBs,so YES we have to get a new one.-Otherwise IM telling you they will hold out probs in the league but when it comes to the CL-youll see they are not up to scratch, hence out of the 16 which made the KO stage I think are defence was worst-it needs sorting out.

Im not even saying to spend big on a CB-not at all,if management and cheif scouts do there homework, they can easily find a solid CB to purchase for about 3-6mill,that money would prove invaluable to are season.

Lisandro and Bastos done-Hopefully Cissokho will be done by the end of today.I dont like the home shirt,it likes like the russian national team-its pretty boring I like the CL and away. The good thing is that its a complete change from last season so its a fresh start and we can delete what happened last season.

I read somewhere- L’Equipe I think- that Cleber Anderson is on the way out, so that leaves us with Bodmer at 3, and Toulalan at 4 bec Mensah can’t be counted on. And Ronan, I think you miss the point: I agree with you that our CB’s- minus Boumsong and maybe Mensah bec we haven’t seen him play a long stretch bec of injury- aren’t good enough. The point is that that’s what we have, and that’s what management is going with. They just won’t bench Cris and Mensah has to be moved before they bring in a good CB. I think it will happen either in the winter, if none of these pairings works-out or definately next summer. Hopefully Rami will still be around.

Looks like someone was right about giving this thing time, and Gignac is doing all the work for us:

@ Ronan (about kits). Arsenal had an away kit similiar to this about 4 or 5 years ago by Nike….it looked like an athletic shirt (as mentioned in the article) or a goalkeepers top (as mentioned by lefutur).

Also skin tight jerseys only look good on people with the suitable physique…even players don’t wear them ’skin tight’ most of the time…

Hmm I like the vertical stripes more, but the kits look so much better with the sponsor plastered all over the front. Maybe now is the time to get a kit now that I have income. Too bad for the horizontal stripes though :/
