By: Inara | October 10th, 2007~~~~~~~~
I take back what I said about the away kits. The gold kit is fast becoming a favorite, whether paired with red or dark blue shorts (though I prefer the red). As the Setanta broadcaster said this weekend…gold is a color only to be worn by champions!

~~~~~~~~
Jeremy Toulalan, Karim Benzema, and Sidney Govou have been called up by France to take on the Faroe Islands and then Ukraine in crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers. Fabio Grosso has been called up by Italy to take on Georgia and Scotland, Kim Kallstrom has been called up by Sweden to face Liechtenstein and North Ireland, Milan Baros will be joining his Czech Republic teammates to take on Germany, and Kader Keita has been called up by the Ivory Coast to participate in a friendly against Austria. Additionally, Hatem Ben Arfa will be joining the France U21s to face Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania.
UPDATE: Domenech has called up Hatem Ben Arfa to replace the injured Louis Saha! This is Ben Arfa’s first call up to the senior team.
~~~~~~~~
Fabio Santos is having a great birthday. Not only did he put in his best performance ever in a Lyon shirt this past weekend, he almost made Jeremy Toulalan redundant. In fact, his performance was so good that he landed a spot on Gazzetta dello Sport’s European team of the week. That’s a pretty big jump from nothingness to having his name next to the likes of Lionel Messi and John Terry.
Team of the week: Casillas/Real Madrid - Garay/Santander, Terry/Chelsea, Kyrgiakos/Frankfurt - Elano/Manchester, Ze Roberto/Bayern, Fabio Santos/Lyon, Quaresma/Porto - Van Persie/Arsenal, Alves/Heerenveen, Messi/Barcelona.
~~~~~~~~
Alain Perrin is living day to day at Lyon. Convinced his job could go at any time, the Lyon manager is grateful for the 3-1 win over Bordeaux on his birthday. He is “a little less threatened at the moment” though he did receive the dreaded vote of confidence from Jean-Michel Aulas.
~~~~~~~~
Lyon’s game against Monaco on October 20th has been pushed back by an hour to accommodate the Rugby World Cup final. The game will now start at 10:15 AM (instead of 11:10 AM). In addition, PSG-OL on October 27 has been pushed forward another hour and will start at 3 PM (as opposed to 2 PM). *
~~~~~~~~
Since Lyon are L1 champions, they, along with runners-up Marseille, were given a bye to the round of 16 in the Coupe de la Ligue. Lyon have been drawn against Caen, and the game will take place Wednesday, October 31st at Caen. *
~~~~~~~~

Depending on what you read, Mancini wants to leave Roma either because he broke up with his girlfriend (he did it over text messaging…what a classy guy) or because he wants his salary doubled. He is willing to consider a move to Lyon if the price is right, and according to Il Romanista, Lyon are prepared to offer €4m/year. Right.
~~~~~~~~
Lyon may or may not be interested in Simone Barone of Torino and Adrian Mutu of Fiorentina. Fiorentina, on the other hand, are interested in Hatem Ben Arfa and sent a scout to watch both him and Karim Benzema this past weekend against Bordeaux. Dream on, Viola.
~~~~~~~~
Eager to make amends for making this comment, David Trezeguet is now smoothing ruffled feathers by laying the praise on Karim Benzema rather thickly while still managing to paint Lyon in an unflattering light.
“In Karim, I can partly see me at the same age at Monaco. He has achieved an extraordinary start to the season at Lyon, even if l’OL are not the same as in the past. I am really impressed by Karim. He has everything, left foot, right foot, desire, daring and dribbling sense. He still has to show his qualities at Lyon and then he will leave. Ligue 1 is perfect to show yourself growing, but high-level is somewhere else. Benzema has all the qualities to become a great forward. I believe he represents the future of the French team.”
Thanks, David. You must be so glad that Didier Deschamps wouldn’t let you sign for Lyon when you were desperate to escape Juve’s Serie B demotion.
~~~~~~~~
Even the snide commentators at British site Football365, who are very dour handed when it comes to praise (unless it involves Darren Bent), are growing fond of Benzema. According to one columnist,
“Lyon have a potentially world class player, and Benzema looks destined for far better things than Ligue 1. He might even be good enough to make Alain Perrin look like he knows what he’s doing.”
~~~~~~~~
As for Karim Benzema, none of the praise is getting to his head. He reiterates that he has a lot more progress to make, that he’s not a kid anymore, and that he prefers playing as an axial attacker in a 4-4-2. He also says that Lyon aren’t weaker, just different, and that it will take time for the new players to gel together. Benzema also says that if he ever played abroad, he would favor a move either to Spain or to Italy because he doesn’t like British or German football and its accompanying lifestyle. But have no fear, French fans, because when asked if he can imagine himself staying at Lyon for another five years (until the end of his contract), Benzema said this:
“Why not? I know that in football, things can change suddenly. But I am very happy here. I was born in Lyon, and I have my family and friends here. And to begin a career at OL is not a bad thing at all. Lyon has been the best French club for seven years, and one of the better European clubs. Every day, I play against big players and I progress. So I don’t think about leaving.”
D’ya hear that, Roman?
~~~~~~~~
Scottish midfielder Charlie Adams accused Alain Perrin of sour grapes for saying that Rangers play anti-football. Adam says that “it’s easy for teams to blame other teams after defeat.” I must admit that he does have a good point.
~~~~~~~~
Juninho can count his lucky stars that UEFA will not be sanctioning him for his rather embarrassing dive against Rangers last week, especially since his compatriot Dida is facing investigation for his theatrics against Celtic. UEFA says that since Juninho’s dive didn’t affect the result, it doesn’t warrant much attention (though it did result in a yellow card for David Weir). Hmm. While I’m glad that he’s not being punished, saying that some dives are okay is not the message UEFA should be spreading in the world.
~~~~~~~~
Speaking of Juninho, he hit back at the French media for the heavy shower of criticism Lyon have been dealt since the start of the season.
“People have the right to criticize but they don’t have the right to be disrespectful. Our team is the 6-time champions of France and we have entertained people everywhere. Sometimes I get the feeling we’re like foreigners, that Lyon isn’t part of L1. Frankly, I’ve never seen anything like it before! It’s much harder this season but hard work pays off and the team will continue to improve.”
~~~~~~~~
Jean-Michel Aulas might be overplaying the humble underdog card as he keeps on insisting that a UEFA Cup spot is a realistic objective. He even went so far to tell Laurent Blanc that he hopes Lyon will join Bordeaux in the competition, and that there is nothing humiliating or dishonorable in losing a game (in reference to the loss to Rangers).

Good to see Domenech choosing more youngsters — he’s selected a couple from our squad for the first time (I’m a gooner): Diaby & Flamini. Wish he’d chosen Clichy too.
Oh, and Charlie Adams does have a point about Perrin’s comment but Perrin is correct: Rangers and the Scots in general do play anti-football. Remember that horrid game in Glasgow? Who could call that anything but dreadful negative football where the principle tactic is to kick and injure the other team out of the game. Unfortunately, anti-football often wins in big tournaments.

I dislike Domenech, because he insists on selecting Makelele and Thuram even though neither should still be playing. He rely’s on astronomy for selections. He accuses Italy of being cheaters. He has a war of words with France’s best finisher, albeit Trezeguet is an arrogant and pompous asshole (aka a French person).
But, Domenech has really shown that he wants to integrate youth into the national team, and to turn a new leaf for the NT. Briand, Sagna, Benzema, Nasri, Diaby, Lassana Diarra, and Ben Arfa are all full of potential and need to be on the team. Mathieu, Coutaduer, Clichy, Pele, and Gourcuff all should warrant a look too. I like Flamini in the midfield, I really want to get away from dependence on Patrick Viera and Claude Makelele. Viera still has a spot in the team, but Makelele should be replaced, as is the case with Thuram. Remember how Marcel Desailly was awful at Euro 2004 because he was past his prime and got riped up by Croatia? Yeah, we need not have a repeat of that, and for the sake of both of their careers, they should leave with no major blemishes, something Desailly didnt do which is too bad. Or Claude and Lillian know something we all want to know, is this France team ready to win Euro 2008? May that be the reason their sticking around….

i think Domenech is starting to strike the right balance between youth and experience in the NT. As Inara mentioned its important to have young hungry players like Benzema and Ben Arfa on the team because it will motivate the older players who think that they can just show up and put in a day’s work and they’ll automatically get a call-up. It could be that Trezeguet being shunned is a willful ploy to wake up the rest of the team and show them that nobody can take their spot for granted. Personally i think that Domenech is being petty because of what Trez said about him but there’s also the posibility that he’s being pragmatic about it and also single him out to make a point.
That said, I disagree with Corey that Makelele doesnt deserve his spot. Just as its dangerous to have too old a team, its also dangerous to not have a few veterans in the squad to provide leadership and stability to the younger players. Witness Spain vs France during the world cup. And Makelele is one of the players who all the youngsters look up to. Toulalan is definately in the wings to be his successor, but not yet.

“Trezeguet is an arrogant and pompous asshole (aka a French person”
!!!
Hum… ok !!!
About Ben Arfa. I said I was scared he leaves because I’m not sure he’s enough mature. If he plays well, and is a starter in Lyon, he will probably think it’s time for him to go in a BIG CLUB. HE will forget he wanna play, and will be sad when he will realize the bench is his routine…
I’m scare about that. If he knows Real Madrid offer 20 millions for him, he can more easily have “la grosse tête” than Benzema. And I don’t see Aulas refusing this kind of offer.
I hope I’m wrong.Posted from

Corey : “arrogant and pompous asshole (aka a French person)”
Pretty pompous comment I’d say. Pretty arrogant to judge a nation like that.
Pretty american like….

Hahaha, I love it. Evilo, you just did the same thing. I suppose saying he is arrogant and pompous because he is an athlete is more appropriate, but i cant help getting in a cheap shot at the French, one of my countries biggest detractors. Seeing as how every person outside of the US criticizes it without knowing to much about it. You have no clue the crap I get because I am american and have taken an interest in a non-american sport.
Trezeguet is a douche bag, there is no way around that, his comments are dripping with arrogance, and playing for a team of cheaters has not toned his ego down at all. “Benzema reminds me of myself” ugh shut up, you had Henry to compliment your rise to fame, Benzema has of last weekend been on his own. Although I do truly expect Benzema and Ben Arfa to shoot to world wide fame together as a strike team.
As for Makelele, he does not warrant his spot anymore for me because he is not playing week in week out with Chelsea while Toulalan is, and with Diarra, Flamini, Mavuba, Lassana Diarra and Toulalan, we are pretty well covered at that position.

COREY :
“Hahaha, I love it. Evilo, you just did the same thing.”
Which was basically the joke.“the French, one of my countries biggest detractors.”
And rightfully so. It’s good to see someone stand up when you’re about to make a mistake.“Seeing as how every person outside of the US criticizes it without knowing to much about it.”
Oh we know a lot about it. Which is why the US are criticized these days.Posted from

French fries, Freedom fries…at the end of the day, they are just deep fried potatoes!
About Ben Arfa, good thing he has a long way to go before he matures enough to start for a bigger team. The difference between him and Messi, for example, is the level of selfishness between the two players. Ben Arfa is still learning that it’s okay to pass to his teammates, even the ones not named Karim.

I’m quite disappointed about your strange comment, Corey.
I don’t remember seeing here a French criticize an american person just because he’s an american. That’s what I wanted to say by quoting your sentence.
But never mind.Let’s talk about foot, baby
Don’t talk about you and me…
Let’s talk about All the good things
The Ben’s Karim et Hatem can Bring
Let’s talk about foot…
Let’s talk about foot !(That was my musical minute on this blog !)

Chelsea have their greedy eyes on Benzema for this winter’s mercato.
And apparently four Italian clubs (Milan, Inter, Fiorentina, Juve) are after Ben Arfa.
Booooooooo.

Corey, stop the hypocrisy and ignorance. You whine about the French and others criticizing the US even tho they know nothing about Americans — yet that is exactly what Americans like you do to the French. Americans who trash the French have never visited the country, don’t know any French people and just parrot the stupidity in their media. Americans love to insult the French and Europeans in general without knowing nothing about them but heaven forbid Americans get the same treatment from other, they suddenly get incredibly sensitive. You can dish it out but you can’t take it in.

Guys, I’m sure Corey didn’t mean it like that. It was a joke that just went awry (you know, like we make fun of cheating slimeball Italians, alcoholic Scots, clueless Americans, and those diving Portuguese (no offense!!!). Corey is a huge admirer of French football in general, and certainly many times more knowledgeable about it than I could ever hope to be.

I took it as a joke the first time, too. But his (her ? I’m sorry I don’t know if Corey is a girl or boy’s name…) answer to Evilo surprised me as well.
Well. No matter.
I have to go. It’s time to watch my favorite tv show… “Daily Show”, with Jon Steward

I have to confess that my favorite tv shows at the moment are CSI and Gossip Girl (actually, those are the only shows I watch - I’m not a big tv person). Don’t hate me, guys! I swear I’m now shallow deep down inside.

if i can call the french names, you can call americans names. it was a joke, storm, evilo, jo etc. i did not mean to ruffle your patriotic feathers, if you cant laugh at yourself then what can you laugh at?
Ohh and I am a guy, I write a blog here and I am certainly not more knowledgeable about France then Inara, otherwise I would be writing about France instead of Real Madrid.

Well, i think we can say at least this, that the 3 goals scored by Benzema and Ben Arfa today for Les Bleus, is going to do nothing to cool down the foreign interest in these two corner stones of the OL.
Posted from
France

That’s right loopy… And I’m asking if I wouldn’t prefer them on the Bench for NT !
Posted from
France

On the bench or on the pitch doesn’t change a thing, they are looked upon. The good thing about them scoring goals is that every goal makes them more “expensive” to buy. So less and less clubs can allow themselves to buy them.
Now they play in Lyon, i don’t see why they should go abroad (Ok, money is a good point, but they also see what happened to gourcuff)…
My only big scare is ARSENAL, because we know they play with their young players, so it is a tempting move. Let’s hope they don’t enter the dance!Posted from

It’s too late Scott, Arsenal are rumored to be interested in Ben Arfa already (a 10 million pound bid is what I’ve been reading). He’s probably a more plausible target for most clubs because he is cheaper than Benzema and rumored to be unsettled. As for Benzema, he is simply too expensive, and I don’t think any club will bid for him until he has the experience to back up his asking price.
Posted from
United States

His asking price or JMA’s?
If it’s his own personal contract demands then I’m prepared to label him a career failure right now. The next Anelka.
He hasn’t earned jack shit yet. He may be talented and performing well at the moment, but that means little. You value keepers, defenders, and midfielders who dominate L1. Forwards, not so much. The list of guys who bagged a disgusting number of buts in L1 is long and riddled with Big 3 failures. I’d rather have Ben Arfa.
Posted from
United States

Aulas’s of course. Benzema is quite undemanding and happy to be at Lyon.
Though I would argue that Anelka is the wrong example. Perhaps Djibril Cisse would be a better choice. Anyway, the list of French attackers who have succeeded outside France is actually quite longer than the list of goalkeepers, midfielders, and defenders. And though it’s early, it’s obvious that Benzema is not a Cisse.
