Nice vs Lyon : Road to salvation, or perdition?

By: Megame | April 3rd, 2011

In a fortnight of international football in which half of the Lyonnais have gone missing, selected for their respective international duties, Claude Puel and his staff said they nonetheless managed to have interesting training sessions with the few souls remaining along the Rhône at the Tola Vologe training facility, progressively incorporating their returning colleagues.

That’s good news, as restarting in Nice, OL’s black cat from the Riviera, is never a pleasing prospect. OL haven’t won at the Stade du Ray since the 2007-2008 season … The Lyonnais had been defeated in Coupe de France in the extra time for their last trip to Nice, a few weeks ago. But it does not prevent the Azuréens from displaying a low profile before hosting OL again. In front of a formation which plays one of its last cards in the race for the title, the Niçois, currently 15th, desperately want to escape from the danger zone. And they know that it will not be a cakewalk. In Nice-Matin, the local newspaper, Eric Roy confided that this OL frightened still him a little.

” Lyon remain a scarecrow, with players capable of making a difference. We think of Lisandro Lopez first of all. And then they have a keeper ( Lloris) whom we know a little and who does not look bad “, pointed out with humour the OGC Nice trainer and former Lyonnais Eric Roy, who hopes to repeat the trick against the Olympique Lyonnais on this occasion also.

Nice - Lyon

For Lyon, things are being taken very seriously as well, as no mistake is allowed if we are to keep a chance to be crowned champions. Comfortably installed in the top spot, Lille are showing no sign of weakness nor fatigue whatsoever, and day after day they increasingly look likely to win the trophy this season. And they just won their game of this matchday. Behind, OM is another very serious contender, who will play later today with a chance to stick to a 4 points difference. Rennes lost, so they’re now 7 points behind Lille. And Lyon, currently 4th with a 9 points gap with Lille, could overtake Rennes and become third if they were to win. Behind, PSG lost yesterday, and with 12 points less than Lille they know they probably missed their last chance of becoming champions this weekend.

That’s why Puel, painfully aware of what it costs to field players based on their potential rather than their current form level (Madrid, anyone?), took no chance in his team compo which (fingers crossed) should do the job.

The teams:
Nice : Ospina – Clerc, Civelli, Pejcinovic, Coulibaly – Digard, Sablé, Traoré, Mounier – Mouloungui, Bellion

Lyon : Lloris – Reveillère, Cris, Diakhaté, Cissokho – Gonalons, Kallstrom, Pjanic, Briand – Gomis, Lisandro

Allez l’OL !

Damn I will not give up! Lyon still can be L1 champion

  • AlexT

I would love the idea of C. Gourcuff coaching Lyon. But a more viable option would be Eric Gerets.

  • john

Lille and Rennes go down while PSG wins. Watch Marseille go down or at least draw tomorrow, and we will probably piss away the opportunity to make-up ground once again.

  • Russ

hahahaha. lets have a little faith, now

  • sdzsdz

boom! rennes and lille both lost, this is huge!

  • Luke99

i honestly dont see anything wrong with Pablo Correa i think he can definitely win the league but i think he will struggle badly in the CL on his 1st season i think Eric gerets is the best man for the job that dude seems to get the best out of his players wherever he goes and as long as the players and coach have a good relationship everything goes well just look at jose mourinho anyways with Lille and Rennes losing today i think God just gave us another chance but if we fail to take advantage tomorrow than the Lyon players are just airheads. We should really be beating teams like nice and lens 3-0 or more no excuses

  • sideny govou

Come on guys Corea in Lyon?? Please no!!!! Puel from Lille to Lyon = DISASTER!! Corea from Nancy to Lyon = your opinions guys

  • john

Even worse! At least Puel seemed like a good choice, being that he'd at least won something, like the league with Monaco, some trophy with them, and taken his tiny Lille squad to the CL. If you say names like Rudi Garcia, Antonetti, or maybe C. Gourcuff I'd be a bit more upbeat. But still, even with as many talented coaches are there are in L1, the problem is that the egos are getting too big on this squad and we need someone who can handle that and has experience on the big stage and with SUCESSFULLY handling the throes of playing in the league and in Europe simultaneously.
I actually get tired of bashing Puel. It's not all his fault: he's just needs to coach a smaller team.

  • sideny govou

Agree!! When they say Lippi; Honestly I say no! Why?' Defenisive style of football!! Sorry guys; I'm still for Manuel Pellegerini; He plays fast, aggressive, attacking football, ideal for Lyon who, for me, have the best players in L1!! In this the best players, I throw out Cris and Pape

  • john

I love JMA and usually defend him to the death, but if this has any truth... sigh: http://www.chronofoot.com/olym...
Unless he's planning for cost cutting if we don't get in the CL...I hope more serious options come up, like Rijkaard for one.

  • Emersonocarrera

What the fuck is going on. It's almost a certainty that we will lose many of our players like Bastos, Cissokho, and maybe even Lloris, even though he assures everyone he is not going anywhere, ( reminiscent of kaka w/ Milan) How is it that we are struggling when we have a team that just oozes out talent.

  • john

    Poubelle!

My point exactly. How is what I am saying not true. Lloris is frustrated he wants to and deserves to win something. It's obvious Bastos has had his mind set on Juventus for quite some time now, and Cissokho is already hinting at a future move to the Premiership. Don't get me wrong, I would love nothing more than to see these players stay on and achieve an eight trophy, but as of right now it looks like my dream is just that, a dream.

Can you shed some light on what happened here?I know that Lloris screamed that some don't deserved to wear Lyon shirt, but what happened with JMA?

It was sad watching Puel standing with his head down while Hugo screamed :/

  • AlexT

JMA said their was a fault on the play when Nice scored the second goal. (Clearly a handball) and one of the coaches of Nice started to argue with him when he overheard.

  • john

I read that Lloris said something like "you two[Cissokho and Gonalons] shit on this shirt[the Lyon kit] and you flushed it down the toilet."
I was wondering when Hugo would finally erupt. He has single handedly been keeping us in matches and from getting blown-out, constantly mopping up the shit that backline takes on the pitch. He works too damned hard, and I think this is one of the main reasons he will split this summer.

  • Luke99

where the hell was Toulalan when all this was happening because were not in a stage where we can play youngsters such as Gonalons for god sake we were behind Lille by 6 points which is already a hard task and what kinda of coach takes off his top class players in this kinda of circumstance i dont know weather Puel is retarded or careless we were under so much pressure when he took Lisandro off and even though Diakhate was shit it was Gonalons who was getting robbed off the ball and why was that stupid guy trying to fight with JMA after the game. THE FLOPS OF THE MATCH Diakhaté Gonalons and Claude Puel

  • Tibor

    Toulalan was suspended ;)

  • john

For anyone who harbored fantasies of this guy returning: http://www.footmercato.net/pre...

The sale of Boumsong was a bad move. Why didn't we try to sign him to a two year extension?

  • Luke99

Boumsong was the man its a shame we lost him for nothing he was even better than Cris

  • john

Yes, one of my favorite players. Sad to see him go; and such a bargain: we payed 3mill for him!

  • carvivlie

Why do we keep losing matches in the final minutes when we had the game under control. Granted they were a lot more dangerous in the second half but come on!!! Gutted, angry--trying to stay positive is impossible right now. This has been the worst weekend of football for me. All of my teams needed a win and only one did--Milan--but they were the one team that could afford to lose and still win the league. Need something positive this week or may need to stop watching for my own health.

  • sideny govou

I will say; I don't have words!! Pape I spit on you!! How stupid player! And he says that he is not born to be number 2; Hell number 2, number 99 idiot

  • stanley

can't blame Puel for this one seriously.....why is diakhate giving up 2 penalties? and cissokho couldn't clear the ball out

  • Nikhil Apte

3rd Place Champions League spot should be the target now.

  • Let me be the first to say: Fuck you Diakhaté. I'm not a big fan of cursing, but right now it feels right.

  • john

Thank heavens we got him on loan and didn't buy him. He needs to go back to freezing his ass off, sitting on the bench at Dymano. Can't remember when we had such a big flop as Pape. Neither Piquionne, Keita nor Baros even come close. They hardly ever produced anything, but at least they never cost us points since they were on the offensive side.

  • john

I think you should all get ready for the distinct possibility that we will not be playing in the CL next year and of a mini-exodus of our best players. I will be shocked if we finish third. We need to cut the bullshit and bring in someone during the summer who can steer this ship in the right direction. I'm sure that decision has already been made.

  • Megame

8 points difference with Lille. I don't know whether I am more gutted or furious.

  • stanley

    that was shameful

  • lefutur

somebody shoot Diakhate. and Puel for playing him instead of Lovren.

  • Tibor

    Lovren needed rest,he's playing non-stop

  • Nikhil Apte

Well, even 15 minutes, 20 minutes would have done Lyon good.

  • john

Lovren's a CB, not a box-to-box midfielder, winger, other foward position player, or even side back, who really need rest because of the enormous amounts of running they do. If he's nursing some pain or something then fine. I really don't know so I can't bash Claude Poubelle just yet for sitting him.

  • AlexT

    but we needed points!

  • lefutur

    what the fuck!!!!

    fuck me!

  • Nikhil Apte

    So bloody furious at Diakhate!

  • Nikhil Apte

    FUCKERS!!

  • Sam

I kinda want Lyon to die after this

  • AlexT

WHY THE FUCK! DID DIAKHTE START OVER LOVREN! WTF WTF WTF

  • Megame

    crap! 2-2

  • Megame

4 minutes extra time, and Nice looking dangerous...

  • Megame

    Another penalty... scored, this time

  • Megame

Second yellow for Diakhaté : off he goes

  • lefutur

    ederson on!

  • Megame

Bafe out, Ederson in, against his former team!

  • Megame

    yay Hugo, again!

  • Megame

The referee was kind and understanding, as Diakhaté's unlawful act could have earned him a second yellow, ie a red and immediate send off

  • muaz

    great job hugo!!

  • lefutur

    Lloris!!!!!

  • Megame

    Hugo stopped it!

  • Megame

    Yay Hugo

  • Megame

    Crap. Penalty

  • muaz

    wheee

  • lefutur

great first half. cool finishing by lisandro for the second goal. have a feeling nice will get a red card at some point as well.

  • Megame
