Nice vs Lyon : Road to salvation, or perdition?
By: Megame | April 3rd, 2011In a fortnight of international football in which half of the Lyonnais have gone missing, selected for their respective international duties, Claude Puel and his staff said they nonetheless managed to have interesting training sessions with the few souls remaining along the Rhône at the Tola Vologe training facility, progressively incorporating their returning colleagues.
That’s good news, as restarting in Nice, OL’s black cat from the Riviera, is never a pleasing prospect. OL haven’t won at the Stade du Ray since the 2007-2008 season … The Lyonnais had been defeated in Coupe de France in the extra time for their last trip to Nice, a few weeks ago. But it does not prevent the Azuréens from displaying a low profile before hosting OL again. In front of a formation which plays one of its last cards in the race for the title, the Niçois, currently 15th, desperately want to escape from the danger zone. And they know that it will not be a cakewalk. In Nice-Matin, the local newspaper, Eric Roy confided that this OL frightened still him a little.
” Lyon remain a scarecrow, with players capable of making a difference. We think of Lisandro Lopez first of all. And then they have a keeper ( Lloris) whom we know a little and who does not look bad “, pointed out with humour the OGC Nice trainer and former Lyonnais Eric Roy, who hopes to repeat the trick against the Olympique Lyonnais on this occasion also.

For Lyon, things are being taken very seriously as well, as no mistake is allowed if we are to keep a chance to be crowned champions. Comfortably installed in the top spot, Lille are showing no sign of weakness nor fatigue whatsoever, and day after day they increasingly look likely to win the trophy this season. And they just won their game of this matchday. Behind, OM is another very serious contender, who will play later today with a chance to stick to a 4 points difference. Rennes lost, so they’re now 7 points behind Lille. And Lyon, currently 4th with a 9 points gap with Lille, could overtake Rennes and become third if they were to win. Behind, PSG lost yesterday, and with 12 points less than Lille they know they probably missed their last chance of becoming champions this weekend.
That’s why Puel, painfully aware of what it costs to field players based on their potential rather than their current form level (Madrid, anyone?), took no chance in his team compo which (fingers crossed) should do the job.
The teams:
Nice : Ospina – Clerc, Civelli, Pejcinovic, Coulibaly – Digard, Sablé, Traoré, Mounier – Mouloungui, Bellion
Lyon : Lloris – Reveillère, Cris, Diakhaté, Cissokho – Gonalons, Kallstrom, Pjanic, Briand – Gomis, Lisandro
Allez l’OL !
