Not Just Yet…
By: John | June 27th, 2008
As most of us already know, Hatem Ben Arfa has come to terms with Olympique de Marseille and for some of us, our worst fears have finally been realized. Like an amorous relationship you know just has to end, as much as it may hurt, you know it’s for the best. But HBA’s departure still stings, and leaves me with an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach, necessary as it may be. As Inara has already prepared a piece once HBA’s departure is official, I thought I’d just keep everyone up-to-date on HBA’s transfer “turbulence.”
Most of us have already written-off HBA as good-as-gone after Marseille’s press conference a day ago. But today OL realeased in an official communique, an ultimatum to OLM, demanding that the transfer of HBA be officially formalized. The demand by OL basically stated that the club would end official negotiations with OM, if Marseille does not secure HBA’s signature by Friday evening, in order for the transfer to be registered with the League by 30 June. The official communique goes on to say that without an agreement between the player[Ben Arfa] and Lyon, the club will have no choice but to negate the transfer. Also, that Lyon has not given permission for HBA to have his medical examination at OLM.
What is it that HBA and OL are not in agreement about? I don’t know enough about transfers to read into this. Is JMA having seller’s remorse and trying to up the price? I’ll leave it up to you guys to comment.

I can understand Aulas and not selling Ben Arfa. He did say once that he builds OL around Karim and Hatem.
But the same with Coupet too. 3mil for Coupet? I’m no sure if Atletico are willing to fork out that much for an older player..

Its a clause in BenArfa’s contract with Lyon, so I assume its a performance bonus Hatem wants but Auluas doesnt want to give him, i.e. buying more time for Puel to covince Hatem to stay. Which is what I think will happen.

But you know what strikes me as weird? Lyon and Marseille came to a deal AFTER Puel joined the club. Aulas easily could have halted or prolonged negotiations. If Puel really wanted him to stay, he could have talked to Ben Arfa all of last week.
I honestly think Aulas is hesitating because he’s afraid Nasri won’t sign for Arsenal, which means that Gerets will have a crazy team of Nasri, Ben Arfa, Valbuena, Niang, and even Cisse - a pretty dangerous squad.
Given that Aulas is selling Ben Arfa at a very discounted prince already in an effort to get rid of him as quickly as possible, I feel like he’s making this a problem on purpose.

Apparently, the terms of the contract are that OM will pay 11m up front, plus another 1m if they qualify for the Cl next year, and 20% from future sales of Ben Arfa. So I guess when you look at it in that light, it’s not that bad. But still, I think straight cash would have been better.

Puel did talk to ben arfa, but mr big head didnt listen, he is hell bent on leaving lyon for a place where he will start no matter how selfish his play. Gerets wont teach him much, he even said himself “this is not a teaching club” when he released academy players. So I dont know if this is the right move for him, he would progress more under Puel.

Looks like all of youth players are getting out of Lyon Francesco Migliore is on trial in Belgium with Mons.

Migliore is part of the Remy, Karaboue, Mounier, Ben Arfa, Charvet, Paillot, Bouchard, Hartock, Barlet, Monsanto and Beynie generation. Tell me how many of them figure in the first team and you have your answer as to why he is leaving….

The club can no longer accommodate most of the players they train. Migliore really wanted to stay at Lyon, but I guess the club didn’t think he was good enough to be Grosso’s backup.

Lyon have ordered Ben Arfa to be present for training tomorrow, but Ben Arfa says that he’ll be in Marseille.
Drama drama drama!

I think JMA just wants to make it hard for Pape Diouf… We know the guys hate each other, and the the HBA deal was really going toooo smoothly. JMA planned it all from the beginning…
Or maybe an other club got interested @ the last minute…Posted from

apparently HBA has clause in his contract giving him a 1.5M€ cut of any transfer price. take that away from 11M€ and OL doesn’t get much for a player of this status.
there are ALWAYS little snags like this clauses about fees to agents, former clubs w/ rights, etc. etc. they all get ironed out in the end.
above all, JMA wants to teach OM a lesson about announcing things as official before they are, and also about signing something with ben arfa before the deal between the clubs was cut. this is something could eventually cost OM points on “tapis vert”.
there’s a payback side to it, because OM caused OL undue grief over clerc in a roughly similar situation.

It’s done. OM and OL found a deal tonight, at LFP’s house.
12 millions transfer fee + 1 millions if OM go through the third round of Champion’s league this year + 20% of the gains for a resale of the player.
Ben Arfa agreed to let his 1.5M euros down.I think that’s finally a pretty good deal for OL. Except, of course, if Hatem is the best player next season, and go to Real Madrid for 40 Millions.
And even if that would be the case, OL would touch 8 millions on the 40, so that would be a 20/21 millions price for the transfer. Not bad at all

Jo, I thought that the 20% on the resale was only on the extra money. Like if Marseille sell Hatem for 16 millions (5 more than the 11 millions they spent), then Lyon would get 20% of the 5 millions profit. Not sure though, I may have misunderstood.

You’re totally right, PoL.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I was getting excited at the prospect of 20%.
