Now It’s Malouda’s Turn…

By: Inara | July 6th, 2007

flo1.jpgI’ve always thought that Florent Malouda was smarter than Eric Abidal. Malouda is level headed, reasonable, logical, and can grasp the obvious. That’s why I assumed Malouda would be much more calm about his transfer than Abidal was with his.

Clearly I was mistaken.

For those of you not up to speed, Chelsea, like Barcelona, had their insufficient offers refused, and rightly so. Unlike Abidal, Malouda signed a new contract last fall and is one of Lyon’s most important players. If he leaves, it has to be financially worthwhile for Lyon.

Chelsea, who are trying to pass themselves off as Cheapski this summer, tabled bids well below the €25m mark that Aulas set. Their first bid of €12m was rejected, as was their second, at €17m. Their third bid, at €18.5m, was also rejected. Considering the fact that Lyon bought Keita for €18m, it’s kind of dumb to think that Aulas will let Malouda go for under €20m.

For a few days, things seemed to be at a stalemate between the two clubs until Aulas dropped a bombshell: that Real Madrid were also interested in Malouda’s services, with Madrid president Roman Calderon confirming that.

Any person with the intellectual understanding of a five year old will know that these tactics are to maneuver Chelsea. Madrid want Arjen Robben while Lyon want to drive up Malouda’s price.

Duh.

Said Aulas in an interview:

I said to Flo that I wasn’t sure the deal was going to materialize and that it was necessary he went to Tignes [Lyon's training base]. I am not sure Chelsea have the desire or the means to call out to Florent Malouda…I don’t feel these people really want to tie up this deal.

Classic bartering tactics.

Chelsea predictably panicked. In the span of three days, Chelsea executive Peter Kenyon went from denying that Malouda was a target to saying that he was confident of his signing. They tabled a fresh bid of an undisclosed amount, but it was big enough for Aulas to seriously consider the offer (The Guardian reports €22m). In fact, the bid was so serious that Aulas recalled Malouda from OL’s pre-season camp at Tignes to come to Lyon’s head office.

Of course, Aulas likes his games and said that afternoon:

The club recalls that they accepted the request of the player to look at opportunities to move, declaring from the start that the transfer fee should be between €20 and €25 million. At the moment, no offer at this level has been made to Lyon. Nevertheless, the club stay loyal to the promise made to the player and are therefore prepared to look at all offers that have been made.

You would think that such a ploy would be obvious to anyone possessing reasonable intelligence, but Malouda doesn’t seem to get it. On his official website, he he left a charming message for his fans, translated best by google:

Being given the situation in which I find myself, it is important to make a point: I always endeavored to have the best possible behavior with respect to my employers by putting side of possible states of heart in order to privilege the intérèt club. I would not return in the details but it seems that the club decided to lead me the hard life to the contempt of what I will be able to call the ” rendered service “. My family and me let us be affected but will assume us the collateral damage because one approaches a frangible joint with the leaders…

Dude. Flo. You need to chill out. You know, just as the rest of us know, that you’ll be in Chelsea by next week. But don’t you think you should leave the negotiating to Aulas and let him take care of it? So if you could just calm the fuck down and at least let Lyon get their money’s worth, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks.

I’m really surprised of Malouda’s reaction… Has he phoned to Abidal and Diarra last days ?

Since Olympique Lyonnais losted against Essien, it is very complicated to keep a player against his envy.

Jean-Michel Aulas should win one time in order to stop this way to proceed which make negocation harder …

Irana, thanx for writting this fantastic blog, i really luv your work !

yo apparently the only president in France capable of keeping a player against his will is still Pape Diouf. I really thought Malouda was smarter than Abidal and I believe he is but the possibility for him yto go and play with one of his best friends and possibly be paid at least twice what he’s getting at Lyon must be messing wityh his head. He said he wanted to know by June 30th what was going to happen. and hom being POY didn’t help either. Let the guy go…

(sorry for speaking french… i’m just very surprised to see Bart in here !)

Jo: I’m surprised too, as he’s previously been classy about it, but I guess after reading the latest in the media, he had enough. I’m disappointed though, because he’s setting a bad example.

Corey: As I write this, Brazil is losing to the US in the U-20 WC. What has the world come to that talents like Edson, Renato Augusto, and Pato are defeated by the likes of Adu and Altidiore. I imagine that Remi Garde’s scouting mission isn’t going well, or that Lyon will drop interest in Renato Augusto and go after Freddy Adu (and then I would have to imbibe arsenic).

Bart: Welcome! Whether you are Barth from OL System or not, I’m always glad to have another French reader (but speaking of OL System, I watched it yesterday with the three new recruits and understood only half of it :( ).

I agree, Essien set the standard of player departures at Lyon, and now players think it’s okay to behave so disgracefully. I’m really embarrassed because I always get the feeling that Lyon players are the worst at this. Part of me wants Aulas to say no and turn his back on the money and keep unhappy players, but he’s a businessman, and a good businessman wouldn’t make such an emotional decision. I think he would have preferred to keep Malouda, as he is the most difficult to replace, but how can you turn your back on 20m+ euros?

    Madsear:
Well, Diouf isn’t to be underestimated, and I have a lot of respect for him when he held his ground against Aulas. But that situation was different in that Lyon is not Chelsea, and had Mourinho made the sustained effort last summer to get Ribery as he did to get Essien and is now doing for Malouda, Diouf couldn’t have kept Ribery. The conditions were also that by staying at Marseille, Ribery still had something to fight for – a title, CL qualification. In Lyon’s case, the players have reached the top of the mountain, and barring the Champions League, which you can’t predict, there is nothing left to strive for.

Also, keep in mind that out of all the clubs Diouf could sell Ribery to, Lyon is the worst of all. Selling him to a domestic rival would ultimately make things worse for Marseille.

deal done! Good Luck Mr.Malouda! Now, we can only Hope this money would be cleverly use…
PS: OL thought about Zenden 3/4 years ago, it could have been clever this summer: he would have be the new “Wiltord” of the left side: too old to play all the games so Ben Arfa can take the steps of a regular starter ,and in the same time experienced in order to play the CL games…
    Anyway “qui vivra, verra”!
    Have a nice WE everybody!

    20 million euros for Malouda.

That means that Lyon have so far earned: 15 + 13 + 20 + 2.5 = 50.5 million, and assuming that Diarra goes for another 8 million, that’s nearly 60 million this year.

We spent: 22.5 + 5 = 26.5 million (We’re paying 5 million to Inter, plus another 2 million in result clauses). But I think we’ll spend some more though. Maybe up to 40 million or so (defender? midfielder? striker?).

I don’t know the details of Malouda’s transfer yet, just that he’ll be earning 3.5 million euros per year. I’m assuming that Aulas tacked on the usual bonus result clauses.

For the nex jersey and the Gross Presentation, I have to realise the montage. I’ll do it tonight, when I’ll be back home after work. I’ll post here the link on youtube.
