OL-OM : just possibly the most decisive game of the season

By: Megame | May 8th, 2011

There are days like this when as a supporter you wonder what’s going to happen to you ahead of a big game. Excitation, tension, explosion.. (and, for OL supporters after a no-match like against Toulouse last week, frustration and desperation).

1353714276

And today is one heck of a big game. In a nutshell, with only 4 games to go after this one, it will probably decide whether OL still has a chance to stay on the podium and play the Champions League next year. As one can see in the rankings, a win against Marseille wouldn’t allow us to overtake them, as they will remain second regardless of the result; but it would allow to overtake PSG, very comfortable in their suit of Lyon hunters, and get back on the podium:

1 Lille 66 pts, +29 goals difference
2 Marseille 62 pts, +21 goals difference
3 Paris-SG 57 pts, +16 goals difference
4 Lyon 56 pts, +22 goals difference
5 Rennes 52 pts, +5 goals difference

Hoping for a brace of goals?
Whilst it is difficult to guess what to expect (in other terms, with what mindset OL players will show up this time), a 5-5 scoreline like last year, although memorable and hoped for by the spectators, is not plausible. With a solid defense, embodied by Captain Mandanda and his fantastic season, Marseille is not likely to concede 5 times. Regarding Lyon defense, any comment is superfluous after the Montpellier and Toulouse games; and that will even more be the case in the absence of Cissokho.

The current form:
OM has been criticised this season for shaky performances, but they’re second in the championnat and that’s for a reason. With the 3rd attack of the Championship and the 2nd defense, it is well balanced. Granted, style may not have always been there, but results have, and this efficacy has become a trademark. They have a balance of very experienced players like Gaby Heinze, and very young, promising players like Andre Ayew and his even younger brother Jordan.
The Marseilles attack often took, this season, the form of a puzzle quite difficult to assemble. But one of its pieces, former Lyonnais Loïc Rémy, is back after a three match ban full of energy and hunger, judging from his training sessions; so he should find the axis of the marseillaise attack, probably with Mathieu Valbuena and André Ayew at his side. As too often in the past games, we’re likely to be stung by a former OL player, so it’s very likely we might get stung by Loïc Rémy…

On the OL side, as if the total absence, the unexplainable no-game of last week in Toulouse wasn’t enough, the team is also decimated. Yoann Gourcuff has just been declared unfit because of a painful right adductor, which is yet another blow for Claude Puel, who will have to do already without several starters: Cissokho and Bastos are suspended following their expulsion last weekend in Toulouse (0-2) whereas Toulalan and Ederson are still injured.
Only -moderately- good news, Miralem Pjanic returns in the group after two matches of suspension. Cris should be starting in central defense with Dejan Lovren, and on the left Thimothée Kolodziejczak seems likely to start, because Kim Källström is likely to play in the midfield in the absence of Gourcuff.

The probable teams:
OM : Mandanda – Fanni, Heinze, Diawara, Taïwo – Cissé, Lucho, Cheyrou – A. Ayew, Valbuena, Rémy

OL : Lloris – Reveillère, Lovren, Cris, Kolodzieczak – Kallstrom, Gonalons, Pjanic – Lisandro, Delgado, Gomis.

Allez l’OL, make us proud!

Regarding the rest of the team, here are the news ahead of the Auxerre game:
already injured before the OM game, Gourcuff (groin) and Toulalan (knee) are still not fit. Diakhaté and Källström are suspended, and Ederson can't play either. Good news, Cissokho and Bastos will be back.

  • Megame

Regarding Lisandro's injury, it may not be totally over for the season, but only just : he may be fit again for the last game, healing a torn muscle.

  • Megame

Thanks PSG! They drew against Nancy, which means, regardless of the result tomorrow against Auxerre, that we'll stay ahead by at least one point. Cool.

  • muaz

    south americans ftw!!

  • Megame

Aulas said that Lloris had a serious throat infection yesterday, and that 2 hours before kick off they weren't sure he would be fit to play... I guess that, looking at the game he had, it wasn't too bad a choice to have him play, especially the world class save he made with the Rémy header...

  • Megame

Ouch... This victory is huge, but it comes at a -hefty- price: Lisandro pulled a hamstring, his season may be over...

  • sdzsdz

has there been any updates on his injury? is he actually gone for the rest of the season?...

  • Megame

We'll know today what the doctors say. But Puel wasn't optimistic yesterday at a press conference...

  • Carvivlie

We are so up and down, i'm getting stress wrinkles this season. So glad to be on the positive end. Delgado was amazing this game. His pace and touch was amazing. Pjanic and Kallstrom both had tough games. Both gave the ball away unnecessarily. Pjanic didn't really create much. I'll be glad when Gourcuff is back--just to have another option.

  • Nikhil Apte

Wow, not once did I think that Pjanic had a bad game yesterday. He did provide the freekick for the last goal, took a shot on goal that went wide. Gourcuff is in way worse form.
Statistics saying that Pjanic won the ball 10 times, lost it 13 times, while Delgado won it 5 times but lost it 18 times.

If anyone is to be told off for having a bad game, it should be Gomis, for not even touching the ball on two crosses that slipped through his feet. And Briand for messing up the defence with that slip near the corner.

  • carvivlie

I just found him invisible through most of the game. I forgot he was on the pitch. At least for yesterday's game, I didn't see any improvement over Gourcuff in that area. Neither are really influencing games, which makes me wonder if it's the style of play that may not be bringing out the best in these guys.

  • Nikhil Apte

Well, Pjanic had the joint highest number of balls played for both teams considered together (along with Rod Fanni), 65 times, 84% passing, and supplied 3 crosses and 4 free kicks.
All of us sometimes see what we really are looking forward to seeing, or missing for that matter. :)

For the influencing part, I agree! It looks to me like the team has become highly dependent on the shell itself (wingers, strikers, and Lloris mainly). The creative midfielder position right now looks to be one to simple fill for the sake of it!

  • Megame

I have to admit I never really understood those placing Pjanic on a pedestal. Because so much is expected from him, he seems to disappoint time and time again. Why not just consider him like another promising young player who eventually may become a great footballer in a few years, like Grenier, Pied, without asking him to already be an accomplished playmaker, at his age...

  • Nikhil Apte

But it is he himself who wants to be amongst the first team. Deny him that and I'm sure he will want to leave.

  • AlexT

good result considering were missing 4 quality players. However it should be a 3-3 score, we conceded so easily, and lopez looks to have picked up a knock. At least we got 3 important points.

  • Megame

Indeed, although if Rémy's first goal was unduly disallowed, Briand's goal may well have been unduly disallowed, too.

  • Dror

    Sign Reveillere till 2035.

  • Megame

    And sign Delgado, too?

  • Dror

i miss the days we used to score from every other set piece rather than concede 90% of them

  • Sam

    so embarassing

  • Megame

2-2... Rémy, obviously; from a set piece, obviously.

  • Dror

Delgado and Briand both prove in 1 minute why The former starts over the later.

  • AlexT

and of course we concede a ridiculous goal....

  • If we continue to play like we did after the lead, I'm afraid we won't hold on the lead!

Is it Puel's wish to play this defensive or lack of confidence from the players? With the game we were playing in first 20 minutes we could score 2-3 more goals, why hold back now and wait until Marseille equalizes? And they will cos Gonalons is terrible again and Cris is very shaky!

  • Megame

1-0 half time. Good first 30 mins from Lyon, a bit of fatigue afterwards.

  • AlexT

Remy should have a goal. Lopez scored PK though!!!

  • Megame

Yes, Remy's goal was valid, but the ref thought Ayew made a hand control.

  • pjanic

    any links, please

  • Nikhil Apte

Tempo after 4 minutes suits a potential 6-6!

  • Nikhil Apte

    Here we go!

  • Nikhil Apte

Good post; Can feel the tension!
Megame, you always get the teams bang on correct! Just how do you do that! :)

New kit today? If yes then let us hope it is also a new Lyon side rising from the ashes of the previous one!

  • Megame

Thanks. Regarding the teams compos, well... Let's call it insider's tips..

And yes, that's the new kit the players are wearing.

  • Sam

what are people using for streaming?

  • Nice post @megame:disqus. Now let's win this! NE JAMAIS LACHER!!
