Pape Diouf Would Like to Return Lyon to Italy
By: Inara | May 4th, 2007
Unless you’re a history buff, you probably aren’t aware that Lyon and its surrounding region (the Rhone-Alpes) once belonged to Italy. It was controlled by the Pope until Lyon was annexed by the French crown in the 1400s.
During the French Revolution four hundred years later, France forcibly “liberated” Savoy, the last district to enter the Rhone-Alpes jurisdiction.
People in those days were ignorant, but now that France is trying to become enlightened (again), Marseille president Pape Diouf, the frienemy of Lyon supremo Jean-Michel Aulas, would like to make amends for the past.
His idea?
To retrocede the Rhone-Alpes region back to Italy.
Not only is this the right thing to do, but it also means that Lyon would conveniently play in Serie A and lose to AC Milan on a regular basis. And if they are no longer in Ligue 1, Marseille might actually have a chance at winning the title.
I didn’t know you had it in you, Pape!

Now if only he can figure out a way to return the eastern clubs to Germany he might be in business. Can’t fault the guy for trying.

Didn’t Bayern Munich want to play in Serie A too?

I think Lyon and Bayern love being big fishes in a small pond, though I’m sure their competitors would love to see them hack it out in one of the top three leagues.
A French team in Italy…now there’s something to enjoy.
