Peace Cup: Lyon vs. Porto

By: Inara | July 27th, 2009

I felt terrible that I wasn’t able to put up a real match preview last night, but now that I think about it, it wouldn’t be much different from the Lyon vs. Beşiktaş preview. No significant news coming out of the OL camp except that Lisandro Lopez and Cesar Delgado will remain on the sidelines (Puel doesn’t want to risk their healing bodies on a friendly), and Jean-Alain Boumsong will also be getting rest.

He did say that Yannis Tafer and Jean II Makoun for starters for sure. Porto will be tougher to play against than Beşiktaş, so I expect Puel to line up a slightly more competitive team. This game will be especially important for Aly Cissokho (and Lopez, but he’s not playing) because he was a Porto player a week ago. Let’s hope he’ll be eager to show off and prove that he made the right decision coming to OL.

Given that Lyon drew with Beşiktaş, the need to win against Porto in order to win the group. If they draw or lose today, and there is a winner in the Porto-Beşiktaş game, then Lyon will also fail to progress. If the Porto-Beşiktaş match ends in a scoreless or 1-1 draw, then Lyon could still get by if they draw a 2-2. Or something. I hate coming up with these scenarios. Let’s just say that Lyon need to win.

The game will be starting 4:30 PM Eastern US time and 22:30 Central European time. This game will be broadcast on GolTV. As always, please post match links in the comments section below.

Damn, if this team won't click then i don't know what to do. By the looks of it from the peace cup our passing really sucks, but it does also for Real Madrid, so i'm keeping my head held high...

  • Michael

John Mensah is injured again, this guy will die soon...hahaha

  • Michael

Flash> Gomis is good player give him a chance

  • Shadow

hmmmmmm, so we have about 4 capable strikers now ( if you wanna call " whats-his-name " capable ).

yet, we still need a defender ( unless we are promoting from within )

  • pean8ts

Michael, Puel said on olweb.fr that after signing Gomis, the recruitment would end.

  • Flash

Gomis is a penalty box striker, strong but has bad technique. For me Remy would be a better option, I think that Gomis is an overated player.

  • Michael

I heard that Lyon want another striker

  • Aleksander

yea, just hope he won't get too clumsy, well, i believe it's a good thing, he a good striker who will also be considered beackup for Licha.

  • Michael

He is very good with head, good speed, very very strong(not like Carew),good shot......
I think he is very talented striker, alot beter than piquionne

  • Aleksander

damn, Gomis. What is his Strenght's really?, Is he fast like a bullet or only strong? could maybe fit well

  • pean8ts

Excited, but i wished we had a bit more time to "build" the team (and also not to recruit at the last moment...)

  • Dror

Don't know about you guys, I'm excited seeing how this team works out

  • Shadow

    http://www.cbssports.com/socce...

CBS is confirming.....didnt know CBS was into "soccer"

  • RougeBleu

I really hoped Gomis was a smoke screen for Guiza. Oh god I hope we don't have two Piquionnes.

  • Sam

Yeah, the defence is a serious issue and really lets down the quality of the rest of the squad. I watched 10 minutes against Besiktas and there quite honestly all over the place. I don't have a great deal of confidence for how they'll cope next year

  • pean8ts

    Lloris
    Cissokho
    Makoun Bodmer Toulalan
    Pjanic Ederson
    Delgado Bastos
    Lopez Gomis

    No defense!

  • pean8ts

I still wondering: do we have a descent defense?

  • pean8ts

Gomis for me has a lot of potential. Could be use to deviate balls to Lisandro. He's strong. Now it all depends on the team organisation, and offensive animation (which i think we lacked a lot last year).

  • Sam

I guess Gomis provides something different up front to something we've had in a while and will probably give us a much needed physicality up front - from what I've seen he can bully defenders with his physique. He's got a relatively decent scoring record - but then again so did Piquionne before he came and look how that turned out!

  • Sam

not seen Gomis play much, how do you guys rate him? he's certainly capable of the spectacular - and stepped up to the occasion against Valenciennes for the final game this year

  • pean8ts

Need one more player up front, and 1 or 2 or 3 in defense, and then to sell Piquionne and Anderson.

  • pean8ts

Gomis is a OL player (OFFICIAL)

  • Michael

    Thank you julien

  • John

I think Cris should worry about his current level of play in L1, before he thinks of making a fool of himself somewhere else, but this is good for the future in that we will be able to replace him, bec I just don't see him regaining his old form, and I'd hate to see him go through the humiliation of being benched, which would be tough for Puel to do.
And 15mill for Gomis? JMA's losing his marbles.

  • julien

Michael > the negociations between Lyon and Nice for Remy have ended because of the hesitations of Nice

  • Michael

    Cris will stay

  • Sam

So what is everyone's thoughts on Gomis? Seems to be the likeliest arrival

  • Flash

If Guiza and Remy come than Guiza should be our joker of the bench

  • Shadow

wiki still says he's with Fener.....

Good to see loyalty and focus in our "experienced" players...

  • Shadow

The Guiza rumour would be nice in the fact it would lower " Whats-his-name" all the way to 4th behind Lisandro, Guiza* and Tafer.

but 12 mil., that im not sure about. Maybe its cause im used to Lyon not paying that or cause Real has Inflated the market Average ( thanks Corey, your team does wonders.... *Angry Face* )

  • Shadow

yeah Zach, your most likely going to have follow Lyon on the web ( thats if you want to follow them ).

The streams David submitted should help ( as they are free ). But if your not afraid of letting a few dollars go, you could always get OLTV on their official Website.

Good luck, and hope you Follow the Lyon often :)

  • Jao

I'm hearing the Guiza talk are only rumors. Another rumor is Strasbourg local newspaper is saying they are about to sign Yannis Tafer on loan. Only if we sign a new striker, which is bound to happen.

  • David

Hey Zach, there are a bunch of different websites that you can use to find online streams of games.

I like to use http://www.iraqgoals.net/ but if you're looking for more obscure games a good place to start searching is http://www.myp2p.eu/competitio...

  • kubi

if remy and guiza come one will sit and get mad.. and it seems redundant for remy to come back just to sit again

  • kubi

well if we play 4-4-2 guiza should come and we should still loan our mounier and get Gomis as back-up, maybe give piquionne to les verts.

  • Zach

Hey Inara how o you watch these games? I'm considering following Lyon and I only have fsc which i dont think has ligue 1.

  • Flash

Big clubs need depth in the squad

  • Ronan

I dont really understand the situation,Guiza seems to be close, but so does Remy as well and I dont see why we need Lisandro,Remy and Guiza, because what it means that at least one of them wont be in the team and when your paying big money for three forwards(ridiculous money in Remys case)they cant afford not to be in the team.

  • lefutur
  • Ronan

Guiza is class,a true finisher(although he isnt tall 181cm-not small but not tall, tall is 185cm+)im excited about possibling signing a spain international(although nothing has been confirmed and personal terms maybe an issue,so we need to be careful)what happened to Remy s deal now.Maybe Remy and Guiza.

  • Kif

Since they are already in Spain... and had somewhat planned to stay longer... OL will play a friendly game against FC Seville on Thursday night before returning to Lyon.

    http://www.goal.com/fr/news/29...

  • Aleksander

Hope the Guiza deal is true, we could need some height in the box, now we'll have two lethal finishers

  • lefutur

I agree with stanley. a lot of great teams take a while to get out of the starting blocks.

  • Sanders

Looks like Remy is finally heading back to Lyon!

    http://www.lequipe.fr/Football...

  • Aditya

I hate Porto! They beat every French team they meet. Only PSG managed to beat them in 2005. I hope they land in same group as Lyon or Marseille and are taught a lesson.

  • lefutur

ok. another preseason friendly in the bag.

  • Aleksander

Why cannot we even make a simple pass? we shoot from 40 meters? wtf???

  • lefutur

grenier will save the day. ;)

  • lefutur

lyon have been resorting to long range shots all day

  • pean8ts

can we still find 11 players on the market? Let's say 10 (11-Lloris) + 1 COACH (i can't believe i'm saying that, i tipped JMA on Puel...)

  • Shadow

yeah, stepped out to help out with laundry, see porto added another......Puel not making any friends at the moment.

  • lefutur

    unfortunately

  • pean8ts

Is that a live video i'm watching with a OL 0 - 2 Porto score?

  • lefutur

    Lyon are toothless :(

  • Smile

    Hulk scores Benzema like goal

  • lefutur

i hope lisandro doesnt change his mind

  • John

Maybe we should've bought Hulk too!!!

  • lefutur

    omg 2-0

  • lefutur

    tafer on!

  • lefutur

    cris so close!

  • Jao

Why are all the attacks coming from the left. Too predictable.

  • lefutur

    nice shot from ederson

  • lefutur

    kallstom and govou are on

  • Jao

Bastos is going to be amazing. He can't do it all by himself though. Can't wait to see how Lopez blends with the squad.

  • Shadow
  • John

Puel finaly put a real striker in, Ederson.

  • any good streams?

  • lefutur

i wonder if Puel will send on Lopez in the second half

  • Shadow

Pjanic is still alittle too raw when it comes to playing the "Juninho" role ( yea i know, i just made it up and im not original, but still....).

even though its a friendly 4-4-2 wouldn't work, because we would be asking too much of Makoun.

  • Shadow

    HT

  • John

I'd like to see one day, a formation with two AMFs, Ederson and Pjanic; that would be nice.

  • Aleksander

    omfg piq is useless

  • Shadow

passes arent clicking cause we're playing through Makoun, whos isnt a deep-lying playmaker type.

Pjanic is suppose to be the playmaker, but it doesnt seem he is interested in getting the ball.....

  • John

I would prefer seeing Pjanic/ Mounier/Bastos paired as strikers than what we have now.

  • John

RB: Vercoutre played against Besitkas and had a spectacular save, but inconsistency is what keeps him on the bench.
Is Sonny Anderson eligable to play? Somebody get that guy a kit!!!!

  • Aleksander

we can't get our passing to click..........................................

  • RougeBleu

Vercoutre did play against bestiktas. And cris is looking better and better

  • Shadow

i still cant believe Puel still chooses whats-his-name over Tafer for the starting Forward spot........he does nothing !

  • John

We really need a striker or two. Piquionne plays like he's 45.

  • lefutur

    shots are multiplying for lyon

  • Aleksander

    omg cris, what a pass

  • John

I see: Bastos on the right, mounier on the left.

  • John

    Cris almost did it again!!!!

  • John

might as well see Hartock if we're going to give-up the match so quick.

  • Shadow

    porto 1

    Lyon 0

  • lefutur

    Hulk = a monster

  • Shadow

Vercoutre proving that he is what he is...a backup Gk........

  • Aleksander

    Damn Cissokho is fast

  • Shadow
  • Jao

No birthday wishes for Sidney??? The big 3 0 Haha. Anyway looking forward to the match. Congrats to Mehamha and the under-19s too. Semi-finals.

  • Aleksander

Damn, any1 got the starting eleven? too bad Lisandro wont be playing, could really use him. Exciting to see tafer though
