From Betway.com:

Marseille                       7.50
PSG                            12.00
Bordeaux                    17.00
Lens                           26.00
Lille                            26.00
Monaco                       26.00
Toulouse                    51.00
Rennes                       67.00
St. Etienne                 81.00
Auxerre                    151.00
Sochaux                   151.00
Nancy                       251.00
Nice                          251.00
Le Mans                    501.00
Lorient                      501.00
Metz                         501.00
Strasbourg               501.00
Caen                      1001.00
Valenciennes          1001.00

How embarrassing! Only the Bundesliga’s odds are as pathetic as this. Does anyone even bet on the French league anymore?

Lyon’s Hegemony on French football will stop one day… as it has been for Marseille or St Etienne few years ago…
But the question is “when” ?

yes, when? probably not next year, but if so then TFC at 51-1 is a smart bet… much better than *snicker* PSG at 12-1

I’m putting money on Marseille – Lyon is due to fail eventually. By the way, I stole your idea for my post today so thanks.

Also I’d let you know I had a dream about Mathieu Bodmer last night. I dreamt that Roma bought him from Lyon after next season and we were hanging out and whatnot and I had to stop by a family party for awhile. I introduced him to everyone and when he left the room, everybody goes “Chris, you know he’s gay, right?” So I said, “He’s not gay, he’s French” which was followed by a collective “Ohhhhhhhhhhh” and then I woke up.

I need to start doing drugs or something. My dreams are way messed up.

Don’t worry, Chris. I have dreams about Zizou all the time.

I hate to say this but leaving OL for Roma isn’t much of a step up for a player of his caliber. League-wise it definitely is but club-wise, no. And since when are they rich enough to buy Lyon players?

Lyon will “fall” eventually, but I don’t think it will be next year. Even if Marseille beef up with Edmi, Ludo, and Cheyrou, they have to sell off players too and won’t have the depth needed for multiple campaigns.

And having dreams about Bodmer is not a bad thing. Imagine if you had a dream about Ribery? That’d be a nightmare. Too bad Rosella Sensi missed out on €6.25m price. Sheesh. Lille totally would have sold to Roma first before to Lyon.

Allez Lyonnais, I call it a “lateral” move. Be prepared for a rebuttal though. :)

    No, no rebuttal.

If telling yourselves Lyon-Roma is a “lateral move” is what gets you to sleep at night, then by all means, say it. After the show Roma put on at the Stade Gerland I can’t blame you.

Well, Lyon would never have allowed Manchester United to humiliate them like this, or have become the team to lose by the biggest goal differential in UEFA history and become Italy’s laughingstock either.

Both Lyon and Roma messed up pretty badly in the CL. So that comparison doesn’t count anyway. I think the teams are on level in terms of quality. Roma plays in a better league but Lyon are more experienced in Europe and are richer, so are more likely to make it further into the CL.

    Guys, it was a joke.

And I agree with Inara’s points, although I do think Lyon will fall before they win a CL medal. The talent level really can’t be determined until the summer is over, but I do have point out Spalletti turned down Fred because he would rarely play. :)

It’s also a lot easier to shine at Lyon than in Serie A. A lot of Italian players are very underrated due to the competition (see: Germany).

Mancini’s stepovers are ingrained in my memory like a nightmare on repeat. I can’t imagine what it’s like for Reveillere.

I don’t think Lyon will win the CL in the next two years, though I do think they are capable of making it to the semis at least. This past year nonwithstanding, OL should have progressed beyond the quarterfinals.

Chris, Spalletti did turn down Fred, but when you have Totti, you’re not going to change your tactics for another player, and Fred refused to a back up. And Fred did break Chivu’s nose. Ouch.

The thing about shining goes both ways. While there is a lot of competition in Serie A, the league itself isn’t underrated. So yeah, I’m sure a lot of Italian players have problems shining because they have to compete with Kaka and Pirlo, but people have no doubts about a player’s quality because they see him play week in and week out.

French players are consistently underrated because no one ever sees them play. And when they do see them, people think they look good only because they play in a weak league. Only French players who have shined in the CL or in the World Cup (Ribery, Malouda, Bodmer), or the wunderkids (Nasri, Benzema), get any credit from fans of other leagues, even if they play for Lyon.

Chris, we know you were joking. about the “Week ligue” that ligue 1 is, you have to know that Frederic Thiriez (LFP president) announced a mission called “Footpro 2012″. That will (I just repeat…) “make ligue 1 as famous and competitive as EPL and ligua…” in 2012 !
    Good Luck, Frederic !

You know me, I don’t doubt Lyon’s abilities. I may slag off Ligue 1 (by the way, did that comment I made last night really go that far over your head?) or call Aulas derogatory names (deservedly so) but I respect the club they’ve built and the undeniable talent they amass on a regular basis.

I was joking about the Fred thing, I think he’s great and would love to have him in a different system. But Totti is the be all & end all for strikers in Rome. And I’d like to ask Fred if he could repeat the offense should Chivu decide to exit stage left.

Can we call a ceasefire on this debate? There is no definitive way to determine a winner, and we’ll all be spinning circles. Lyon are THE team in France, obviously they’re going to be looked upon highly – but they’re still in Ligue 1. Roma are one of the top teams in Serie A – but have a small chance of competing for the title next year. Where they stand against one another depends on a ton of relative factors. Do I think Roma could win the title in France? Absolutely. Over Lyon over a full season? I don’t know, because they don’t have significant depth. But they may be able to get away with it against the lesser teams, whereas they can’t in Serie A. Therefore, do I think Lyon could compete for the Scudetto over a full season in Serie A? No. I really think the jump in class from relegated clubs Nantes to Chievo is a little too much. There is a lot more parity in Serie A, especially now with the return of Juventus, Napoli and Genoa – who were all relegated off the pitch for disciplinary reasons. The fluff teams aren’t so fluffy in Lega Calcio, which is a huge change for Lyon (especially considering their second half plummet).

Am I right? Who the hell knows. But there’s no way of figuring it out. Cool?

If Inter are in Lyon’s CL group, I’ll be sure to pass on your wish about Chivu to Fred. :)

Yeah, there’s really no way to judge two teams in two different leagues. And unfortunately, the CL isn’t the best way either. So no hard feelings, guys. Team debates and rivalry are what make this place so fun!

Now if only a few St. Etienne fans would appear to really spice things up around here…

I totally disagree with Chris ! And that’s… “what make this place so fun” :)
French goalkeepers are, I think, the best in Europe. That’s a reason why no much goal are scored in the Ligue 1… and why some people considere it as a week league. That’s, for sure, not the best league…

But I’m sure we would be surprise if we could do, one time, a EUROPE league… Just for one season.
With the 4 bests clubs in each league (Germany, England, France, Italy, Espana, Portugal). That would make 24 clubs, so enough to do a championship…
Imagine one second the calendary :
    Day 1 :
    Real – Roma
    Lyon – Arsenal
    Bayern – Juventus
    Porto – Manchester
    Marseille – Barcelona…

    And so on …

I’m not sure french clubs would be the worst one… But We’ll probably never know… what as shame !

The G14 has toyed with the idea of creating a superleague, but I don’t think it will be happening anytime soon. There’s a lot of problems with that, like how do you choose the clubs? Will there be a promotion/relegation system? How will fans get to away matches? Etc.

Though it could eventually happen, if football continues morphing into a lucrative business.
