Please, No More Race Car Analogies

By: Inara | October 8th, 2007

OL president Jean-Michel Aulas refers to Lyon as a “Formula 1″ race car. So did Gerard Houllier, who said the key to managing Lyon was to get in and drive really fast. But after Lyon’s slump last season, Aulas decided that Lyon’s Formula 1 car didn’t need a new driver - it needed an engineer, hence the arrival of Alain Perrin. But after Lyon’s disastrous start in the Champions League, people have been saying that Lyon actually need an entirely new engine.

Today, Perrin decided to put forth his own car analogies as he spoke about Lyon’s performances against Rangers and Bordeaux, respectively. Talking about how the game against Bordeaux was in a different context, Perrin said that Lyon played better because they were up against an attacking team that opened up the game instead of one that played anti-football (*coughRangerscough*).

“Put a Formula 1 car in a speed-limited race and watch whether or not it can show all of its power, all of its speed. When you don’t have space, it’s hard to accelerate.”

Thank you for that beautiful bit of poetry, Monsieur Perrin. Now how about taking all the lessons you learned from NASCAR and putting it to good use? Lyon have a home game against Monaco next weekend before traveling to Stuttgart. Scary.

This may infuriate some SPL fans, but Perrin also said that Bordeaux are a better team than Rangers. I personally don’t think Bordeaux are any better or worse than the Rangers, but Rangers played smart “anti-football” against Lyon. Had they played an open game like Bordeaux did at home, the scoreline would have been 3-0 in Lyon’s favor.

I do agree that Bordeaux is a much better team than the Rangers. Like Liverpool is a much better team than us. It’s al about how they play. Bordeaux are quietly beginning to become one of the main contenders while their star players Mavuba and Faubert still haven’t seen any play.

So, Inara, you probably don’t know that it’s “le salon de l’autobile” in Lyon these days. That’s probably why this car analogy came back !
By the way, when will you come in Lyon to see this beautiful formula one for real ?
    ;)

Rangers are the same as Bordeuax, pretty negative in their outlook. The thing is it was Lyon’s fault they got beat by Rangers, they were utter crap. Against Bordeaux they were knocking it around like they should be. My question is, does Juninho still warrant a spot in the midfield with a 4-3-3 or should Bodmer and Kallstrom partner Toulalan? I think this should be the case, I am loosing my faith in him. Govou as well. Keita and Ben Arfa should flank Benzema, its getting pretty obvious, let hope Perrin sticks with it.

Jo: I had originally planned to visit in February so I could catch a CL match, though that might no longer be possible. I can’t come before January unfortunately. Is there a particular time from February onwards that you recommend?

    Corey:
Juni did well last match. I’ve seen Bodmer in his proper midfield role so infrequently at Lyon I’m having trouble deciding between him, Kallstrom, and Juni. Best would be having all three of them, with Toulalan as support. But that means sacrificing either Govou or Keita.

i have no problem sacrificing govou. i’m convinced keita’s true role in the team will become obvious soon. and ben arfa and benzema need to play together as much as possible….well fred will play sometimes but they can use him in the 4-4-2.

toulalan and dos santos can rotate.

Hum… good question, Inara ! I think you probably should come for a big coupe de la ligue or coupe de france game. OL / Marseille or something like that.

About Ligue 1, in january the 26th, it’s ASSE / OL.
As you know, St Etienne is not so far from Lyon. If you come I can have free ticket for you, and drive you to Geoffroy Guichard (because i’ll go too).
And 3 days before that, it’s OL/Lorient. So if you come on january 20th, you could see a game in Gerland (against a team that has won against us), AND the derby, probably the most important game of 2008.
And if you REALLY cannot be here before february, you can come for OL / PSG, on march the 22th. But I’m not sure PSG will be in the ten of Ligue 1 at this moment.

    And… hum. Take a coat. :)
