Poll: Should Alain Perrin Remain as Manager?

By: Inara | May 27th, 2008

Should Alain Perrin - the man who won Lyon their first ever double while also masterminding several humiliating defeats - remain as manager next year?

I have a longer post planned on this, but I thought I would see where everyone stands with this. Don’t worry about who will replace him, as that’s an entirely different matter. But ask yourself - how will you feel if you see Perrin on the sidelines next year?

I forgot to answer the question.

I think Perrin should stay. He did everything he was supposed to, which was winning the league and a cup. Aulas said before the season started that those were the primary objectives. It was never the champions league for this season.

He had some bad games but he came through on a lot of others. You can’t blame him for the apathy of his players. And he might have done better if Aulas and Lacombe didn’t constantlu undermine his authority. Lyon are developing a reputation for being fickle with their managers. What other club would fire someone who just won their domestic double? Aime Jacquet got it right when he said a few months ago that Aulas can’t treat everything like a business. Lyon isn’t a coorporation. The humanity aspect is just as important, and if no one has any trust in their manager, then Lyon will always fail.

Give Perrin another season at the helm. I suspect his second year will be a lot better.

Didn’t Real Madrid fire their manager and captain after winning the Champions League and even the Spanish title I think in 2002.

Managers get fired regardless of success. In a span of three years, Roberto Mancini has won 3 Serie A titles, two supercoppas, and 2 Coppa Italia (4 final appearances in a row), yet he’s about to get the boot.

Fact is, with Lyon’s resources, they can pick a manager off the street and win Ligue 1 (not insulting our league) and Perrin struggled to do that (credit Bordeaux though for great season). Instead of attempting to teach a certain young player a lesson on teamwork and allegiance by not playing him, he constantly covered up his obvious actions by stating he had better options. He was outcoached on numerous occasions (particularly the two against Marseille). Lyon is just to big for him.

I feel a bit hypocritical to say this, as I thought it was disgraceful for Real to sack Capello last year. But Perrin doesn’t fill me with great confidence, given the manner of the teams performances throughout the season. They really struggled against weak teams and alienating Ben Arfa was a real problem. But however, I don’t know how much of that can really be blamed on Perrin - given that even the toughest of managers like Ferguson have had trouble controlling their players. Based on performances, I’d say he should be sacked. But given he’s won the double this year - I don’t think it would be rightly justifiable

Woooooowww. You all know my position about Perrin.
I think he could have done much better this year if he had not been given some clear instructions after the rangers defeat.

I was very happy to see him try the 4-4-2 that the other managers haven’t tried to install because of Juninho. Juninho is a great player and I worship him, but I think Lyon need to be able to adapt to 4-4-2.
Also, if he had been able to play 4-4-2, I think we would have seen more of Ben Arfa and Bodmer.

Fact : Lyon had as many points this year than last year in the Championnat. Lyon won the French cup

Subjective fact : Lyon played crap at the end of the season. Is it to blame on Perrin, I don’t think we can tell as outsiders. There seems to be troubles amongst players which means they don’t play as a team anymore.

Honestly, I think Perrin deserves a chance. If the results are not there in winter, then give him the sack. BUT keep in mind all the good things he did, one of them being using Benzema a lot (I don’t think Houiller would have done it to that extent). Also, he showed despite all the criticisms from the begining of year that he is a cup coach.
Ok, he didn’t think he could win the CL and played it too defensively, but just give him time to adapt to CL. Lyon are in the 1st hat next season for the draw. We are very likely to have an “easier” group than previous seasons. That should give him time to adapt.

i think the fact that so far 81% of us want him to be fired despite winning the league and the french cup says a lot. first it says that results aren’t everything, or at least the results from this season aren’t everything. on paper, yes, he did a good job. but deep down Lyon supporters feel that OL have taken a step backwards in a lot of ways this season. this was not the dominating, confident, attacking Lyon that we saw for most of the season this time around. the team that effortlessly swept aside most of the teams in L1 and rang up cricket scores in the process. no. this was a team that doubted itself at every turn, a team that was always wondering if it could beat even the lowliest of sides, a team that often undid itself at the most inopportune moments. Compared to reaching the semis of the CL, the double was only barely a fulfilling comfort. Sure, 7 titles in a row. Do Lyon even need a coach at all at this point to win the league? We knew that Perrin could win a cup but were the fans jumping for joy at that prospect when he was recruited instead of someone like Deschamps?
Lyon achieved their goal of a cup victory but to settle for that, and only that, next season would be very un-lyonnais. or at least very un-aulas. i expect him to want more. much more.

    the champions league. period.

Lyon have offered 10m for Lloris. So they have currently outbid Milan (who I believe offered 8m). But the decision rests totally on Lloris now, who will announce his decision on Thursday.

I don’t know about you guys, but what looked like a sure signing two days ago is now making me uneasy. If we lose Coupet AND Lloris, that would be a huge disappointment.

Perrin will stay in Lyon. Everyone said that he had some humiliating defeats - did this people means defeats against Rangers, Barca ( CL teams ) , or against Marseille ( biggiest rival ), or against Lens ( poor game ), Le Mans or Cean ( matches before CL )? But does anyone of you look good side of Perrin’s Lyon? Winning double ( first in our history ), not chrushed against ManU ( we put really good preformance against Red Devils ) , even when we lose against Le Mansin Ligue Coupe de France

I want to say that even when we lose in Ligue Coupe de Frnace agaisnt Le Mans we look very aggresive. Even we didn’t score, we shot on the goal over 20 times? That is amazing, but when you don’t have luck you lose. You can’t tell me that powerful Huilliers squad didn’t have some very humiliating defeats. Remeber against Rennes at Gerland 1-4 for visitors, come on. Against, last season, Bordeaux at home 1-2 ( let’s say that was a miss game, we didn’t do anything ), Toulouse 2-0 ( we were in position to score 3 times in first 14 minutes, we didn’t, so Toulouse score twice from 2 times, poor ). lose against Roma, under avarege Roma, in CL that was line who was crossed very much. You can’t tell me that Roma is stronger than Lyon? 4 Times they were on our side 2 times they score. We almost live in their half of field, we miss I thing 8-10 dead chances. That is way to much. So Perrin must get another chance. He wil imporve himself and the team.

It is a strange thing and I also was somewhat critical of Cappellos sacking. On paper he did a good job but here’s the thing. Real Madrid are more whimsical then Lyon yet are keeping Schuster. Why?? Because they were soo dominant in the league. Fans recognise cups are one game lost and it’s gone, and so dominance in a league shows more quality to an extent. Though I do believe Perrin was some what unfortunate in the CL, I think a more ruthless and merciless manager would have won that tie. A manager with a winning mentality would have his players psyched.

Plus the fact he used to manage Pompey…..*shudder*

I hope Lloris should choose the right club (Lyon), i hope. Perrin should go. He is not a bad coach for a Ligue un club but a bad one for CL. We all see his choices were bad in big matches. He seemed to be a little coward. He waste too much time to understand the 442 will not be efficient with this effectif. in my opinion, he was lucky to have one of the strongest team of Lyon and that this team corrected his mistakes. Against MU we all see that Mu was vulnerable in Defense the only way to beat them beyond me, but he choose a defensive option. When you have a poor defense and Benzema, Ben Arfa, Fred, juninho in your team, in a certain way you have no choice except attack beyond me. I want the CL cup not the Coupe de France.

Thierry: You want CL cup. Do you think that Perrin and Lyon wanted to lose inCL cup? As I said Lyon didn’t have luck. When you have over 20 shot on goal, over 10 corner, posetion over 70%, and you do nothing. Neither of shot didn’t want to go in net, posetion was worth less. Lyon was lack of luck. About Champions League - yes, Lyon have players like Juni, Ben Arfa, Benz and Fred, but you play against team who have Rooney, C.Ronaldo, Tevez, Giggs, you must be careful, because those four players can score you in any time. Tevez was beautifull example. Fred commit mistake, Tevez was on wright place on wright time, and he scores, and that goal cost as quaterfinals.

Anyone hear the news about the France squad. Hatem Ben Arfa is only Lyon player to miss out - it’s been a bad few weeks for him. How was his performance last night? The other players that missed out are Landreau, Escude, Mexes, Diarra, Flamini and Cisse. Pleased for Gomis as well, and looks like he deserves it judging from end of season and goals yesterday.

Didn’t see the game but Ben Arfa assisted the first goal which Gomis basically created himself though. Half glad Flamini got dropped because he left Arsenal despite him being an unbelievable player. Gomis’ 2 goals were brilliant, he really does look a good young player, very Drogba-esque.

Does Govou have have serious bipolar disorder? Last week he said he saw himself staying at Lyon for the rest of his career, and this week he’s begging Portsmouth to make a bid for him this summer.
And if we miss out on Lloris, who else is available? I’ve heard some rumors about Itandje wanting to leave Liverpool.

Goal.com usually does this to people, Inara. Eventually you will go insane with their crappy rumors.

As for Ben Arfa missing the squad. Think about it. Out of all the Lyon players (Boumsong over Mexes is ridiculous), Ben Arfa is the only to miss out. Seeing as Domenech is a Lyonnais and Ben Arfa currently on the rocks with Lyon. Knowing Domenech. Maybe, just maybe.
